Thanks for sharing. A co worker gave me his sand filter pump today after watching install videos none of them had the summer waves with skimmer.. i was stressing that it won’t work (bummer) then I stumbled upon your video! Thank you sir!
Thank you for confirming I don't need to keep the cartridge filter with the sand filter. I have the 16inch Intex sand filter which ran to an old Intex pool but it held up past that pool and now serving the summer Waves
Thank you for uploading this I’ve been going crazy looking for a conversion for the hoses and now I know I can just keep existing filter and add the hoses to that awesome !!
I just ordered the stuff to do this myself, but I ordered a replacement cap for the bottom of the summer waves filter so I can remove the entire pump so I don't need to have that as a bottleneck. You can also either order or 3d print an adaptor that slots into the top of the filter hanging on the pool and creates a seal so you can attach a vacuum.
i did the same on my pool. i bought the 16 though. I have had my pool for the 3rd season. it works great. to keep you pool from getting green in the winter, winterized it then cover it. you don't have to drain it.
Thanks for this video my brother exactly what I was looking for because of that filter on the wall set up. I didn’t think it was posible thanks a lot for this
So I also have the intex sand filter and I just bought a summer waves 14 foot round ultra frame and I was hesitant to ruin my stock piping from the sand filter. You can angle the rubber fitting and twist it right on! Then take the clamp and clamp right behind the lip on the hose! Works great and I didnt have to modify the pipe!
Hi thank you for explaining this. I am confused. I see he bought an adapter that connects with the old pump but how does the new pump then connect to the hole? Does the rubber fitting come included with the pump? Thank you!
@UTRGV-Student the rubber fitting was bought at a local hardware store. It's a reducer from the pool hose size down the the pump size. You'd have to take both hoses in the be sure you have the right fit.
I had to cut the hole with a razor just a little to get the new hose going from the pump back to the pool. The new hose connection is slightly larger than the existing hole on the pool. So I literally just made a few cuts to the existing hole until it fits.
I was so thankful I found your video! No connectors from Amazon worked to the job! I bought the same filter as yours and I have a 14' summer wave pool. I did just what you said and it's perfect. The only thing I would add was that you needed a razor to trim off the extra plastic from expanding the pool hole to fit the water out take.
I am a little nervous about cutting slits in the return outlet hole to make the larger return jet fit. Did you end up having any problems with this? How many slits did you cut?
No problems. I just cut a tiny bit at a time until it fit. Then after when I screwed the hose back on, I couldn't tell it was even done. It didn't need much.
Nice video ! 👏🏽 I’m actually going to be doing the same set up today I have one question though!? did you plug in both power cords for both filters to run it Or did you just plug in the sand filter pump ? Thank I’m advance
@@nicolebenn5628 I figured it out I actually took the original filter off the skimmer like he said . it was super easy to detached from the skimmer no tools needed and used the round black sealer that the skimmer came with to seal the bottom from water coming out and tighten the bottom lid with it fits perfect but to answer your question I just plugged in the sand pump
@@nicolebenn5628 yes sand filter is key! That thing works Amazing on your pool and is way more efficient than the cartridge filters 👎🏽 don’t know why these companies even use those anymore..as long as your keeping pool covered and adding your chemicals every week the sand filter will do all the work 🙌🏽 but I got mine from Amazon “intex 3000gph sand filter” they have 10,12,20,22in and bigger just depends on size of your pool they can be a little pricey but worth every penny
Thank you for you the good explanation my only question is do I have to keep the original pump on? We bought this filer because out original pump broke is no longer turning on
No, you do not keep the original pump on. In fact if you twist all the components out of the old pump from the inside, it really helps with the water flow. You can reach inside the old filter and the parts will twist out fairly easily. So just the case for the old filter is hanging. Just don't twist the bottom off the old filter.
We have both of this and we have ours set up just like you do. It keeps our water clean BUT it does not move anything off the bottom. I have to use a broom or make my kids get in to stir it up so I can use the skimmer.
@@FitsandFun my pump just ran for 6 hours and when i went out to look I was in the yellow on the gauge and absolutely nothing was coming out of the return. What is wrong?
To anyone who has this pool, on mine I had an issue with the skimmer basket kept popping loose and causing an issue with the water entering the skimmer housing.. if you are also having this problem I remedy this by using a fernco attached to the underside of the skimmer basket as a way to hold it down in place and not pop up, has been working great for a few years now.
They sell a cover for the bottom so you can completely remove the pump out of the skimmer. I think it's like 7 bucks on Amazon sensor since you're sucking water through the other pump you're probably lacking some pressure as well.
Thank you so much! I have a question. I followed your advice as suggested but the water flow is very slow. What could be happening? I did the backwash, rinse and filter as suggested?
I'd recommend you check the old filter. You can screw everything out of it and that will definitely help your flow. You can just reach your hand in from the top and unscrew almost everything inside there, so basically the guts of the old filter.
This is super old so I'm not sure if you'll see this but I'm curious if you removed the impeller if it would flow better. I'm looking at this filter and have a summer waves pool also and i was concerned existing pump would not allow good enough flow.
No, what you see in this video is all I did to make it work. After the video I discovered that you can unscrew the a small part inside the original intex filter and it really helped with water flow. Very simple to unscrew inside the motor where the water flow is.
I desperately need a question answered....does this setup work if the summer waves pump is broken? Does the summer waves filter need to function at all?
Yes. This bypasses the summer waves pump. The summer waves pump needs to be in tact and not leaking, so the water can flow through it to the larger pump. But the pump does not need to be funtional. In fact, it's best to twist out the impeller from the summer waves pump for better water flow.
I like your video, but you really took the hard way to do all this. I did the exact same thing, and with spending a little bit of money is much easier. They sell a replacement bottom plate for the skimmer that does not have the plug wire in it, so you can just remove the filter and the bottom skimmer plate and replace it with a solid one for about 10 bucks on eBay. Also instead of cutting the return and using ferncos, you could have just bought Intex brand 1.25 to 1.5 inch adapters (also ebay for $10- 15 for set od 2) and use adapters to hook the 1.25 hose to and from the pump/filter. Very easy.... you accomplished the exact same thing but took the harder way to get there, probably saved yourself around 10 to 15 dollars doing it your way though.
I bought the 1.25 to 1.5 adapter but the SPX-1000 filter (same as in this video) has an output tube on the pump is too big. The 1-1/4 end of the adapter is the exact same size at the output tube, so unless I really force it on there (which I worry would break it) it doesn't seem to fit. Maybe the adapter is made for the smaller (non-skimming) filters.
Hello real y good video what’s was that monsterous noise lol, you mentioned you didn’t touch the old pump some guys say it restricts the flow of you do not remove it?
I’m getting ready to do the same thing. And I got the same exact rubber fittings you did. Did you have to Teflon the inside of them to keep them from leaking?
I'm on my second pool of the same exact model. The pool in this video got destroyed by a toy my son brought into the pool and tore up the bottom. But the slits on the side never became an issue. The holes in the bottom were our issue.
No, I didn't replace any parts on the original pump. After this video I did actually unscrew the internal parts of the motor and it helped with the water flow. These are fairly small parts inside the original filter, not the entire motor of the filter.

I did not plug the original filter in, and I took all the guts out of the motor from the inside. It all twists out fairly easily. Then it really flows well and doesn't get clogged.
How has it gone with the filter does it still work? I have the same size pool and I’m doubting buying 12’”or 14” Which one do you recommend me to buy? Thank you
Is there an easy way to clean the skimmer on the intex pump with out the water coming from the summer waves skimmer overflowing everything with water and getting the clear top screwed back on?
Your pool came with a big black round thing to plug the hole on the skimmer why you do maintenance. The water that is already in the skimmer will come out no matter what but at least it will keep pool water from entering into the skimmer and coming out. You also have to plug the discharge back into the pool as well because water will backflow into your pump system. You can add on a shutoff valves which would make maintenance a lot easier but they are quite an expense.
I know this is an old video at this point, but I did the exact same thing. Thanks for the video! Did you have any issues with the hoses kinking or air getting into the strainer basket area?
@@FitsandFun pulled out the impeller and broke apart some of the restricting plastic pieces and that did the trick! I have a smaller size Summer Waves pump so there was no conversion plate available.
Hey I know you made this video a while ago but I just had a quick question for you. I want to do the same to my 14’ round summer wave pool but I’m questioning whether to get the 12” or 14” pump. Thanks.
The pool is the Summer Waves Elite 14'. I got it at Wal-Mart for around $300 I believe. The filter is amzn.to/3vNt2aU, its the 14" however it appears to be temporary out of stock in the 14".
does the summer waves pump have to be plugged in and working to do this? My summer waves pump will not power on. I want to convert to an intex but apparently, I have to leave that one attached to the pool.
No, I don't plug it in. I just try to bypass it completely. I can't take it off because of the way it's set up. So I just let the water go through it to the intex pump.
@@FitsandFun they recently came out with the conversion kits to where you’re able to remove the old pump entirely and screw on a new lid to the bottom of the old filter.

How has it gone with the filter does it still work? I have the same size pool and I’m doubting buying 12’”or 14” Which one do you recommend me to buy? Thank you
How do you hook a pool vacuum to this?
Did you remove the pump from the existing filter or just leave it in?
You can leave it in, but for better water flow I removed it. It just twisted out.
I plan to get 16 in large model for my 10 thousand gallon pool.
So then only one you have to plug in is the sand filter then?
Yes.
@@FitsandFun thank you so much
Is there an easy way to clean the skimmer on the intex pump with out the water coming from the summer waves skimmer overflowing everything with water and getting the clear top screwed back on?
Your pool came with a big black round thing to plug the hole on the skimmer why you do maintenance. The water that is already in the skimmer will come out no matter what but at least it will keep pool water from entering into the skimmer and coming out. You also have to plug the discharge back into the pool as well because water will backflow into your pump system. You can add on a shutoff valves which would make maintenance a lot easier but they are quite an expense.
Did you have to cut off the rib in the intex hoses to attach the adapter?
I know this is an old video at this point, but I did the exact same thing. Thanks for the video! Did you have any issues with the hoses kinking or air getting into the strainer basket area?
Initially I did. Then I twisted out all the internal components of the summer waves filter for better water flow and it worked much better.
@@FitsandFun pulled out the impeller and broke apart some of the restricting plastic pieces and that did the trick! I have a smaller size Summer Waves pump so there was no conversion plate available.
Do you have a link for that discharge head that's in the pool?
I don't, you may want to try Intexpools.com. I've ordered parts off that site and they have pretty much everything needed.
What the black piece called
Would a 16inch filter work on a 14x42 pool??
Do you run both filters to make this work or is the original filter gutted and just being used without being connected?
No, the original is gutted. It's just to big and awkward to replace with anything else.
Which sand filter is this one ?
Just whatever generic pool filter sand they had at the store. Not sure which brand.
Hey I know you made this video a while ago but I just had a quick question for you. I want to do the same to my 14’ round summer wave pool but I’m questioning whether to get the 12” or 14” pump. Thanks.
I don't know what one is the right one, but my unprofessional opinion is to go with the bigger one. Cleaner water faster. But I'm probably wrong.
Can you link the filter you used? And what size of pool do you have?
The pool is the Summer Waves Elite 14'. I got it at Wal-Mart for around $300 I believe. The filter is amzn.to/3vNt2aU, its the 14" however it appears to be temporary out of stock in the 14".
How much sand did you put in the pump?
3 bags, maybe 2 and a half.
does the summer waves pump have to be plugged in and working to do this? My summer waves pump will not power on. I want to convert to an intex but apparently, I have to leave that one attached to the pool.
No, I don't plug it in. I just try to bypass it completely. I can't take it off because of the way it's set up. So I just let the water go through it to the intex pump.
@@FitsandFun they recently came out with the conversion kits to where you’re able to remove the old pump entirely and screw on a new lid to the bottom of the old filter.
@@boostedk20z1 do you know where you can buy the conversion kit thx!
is the summer waves pump hooked up/plugged in also?
No.
Were you able to leave the existing pump in or did you have to find something else to plug the bottom? Or is the existing summer waves pump still in place?
I leave the existing pump on.
Where did you purchase your sand filter?
Amazon.
