I showed my dad this video and he was impressed how easy it was to eliminate fogged headlights. I been telling him for years to clean his own headlights and now he wants to attempt to do it as a project that we can both do together.
If you want to try, there are several videos about removing tape residue. Some use comercially made products, others use oils (like peanut, olive, and corn oil) or peanut butter. It works on many adhesives.
I had the same issue with my Subaru Forester. I used car polishing cutting compound and finished off with toothpaste. It did work but it didn't last all that long (about 6 months). I'll give one of the kits a go, looks like it will do a better job. Thanks for posting. Cheers
Did the old drill have any controllable speed as you run the risk burning the polycarbonate lens!! Great video all the same well done 😎👍🇬🇧 I would have removed the headlight tape residue from the lens first!!
Tape residue can be removed with regular shop solvent and a rough rag with good old elbow grease. An alternative is removers like Goo-gone etc. from hardware stores. Used plain solvent for years as a detailer. Can’t wait hurt finishes etc. (will remove any wax or polish though, you will have to reapply).

I used the sponge pad on the drill, but skipped all the sanding and used "extra whitening" toothpaste (!). Possibly slower as it's less abrasive, but was plenty enough to work for me... (and who else on your street has minty flavoured headlamps?! lol)
You can remove the left over tape adhesive on most surfaces by using an oil, a mild cloth scrub and clean with alcohol. I've found WD-40 works the best.
I have done Dozens of these lights with nothing more than cutting compound and a rag. You could buff but cutting compound is all you need. Tried the overly expensive kits and the compound works every bit as well.
if you only use compound in 6 months or less the headlights are yellow again, you need to sand and remove the old clearcoat first. and than apply new clearcoat or sealant
Mr Gardenfork, I will take your advice regarding the use of masking tape.To remove the glue-like tape residue on your headlight lens, try using some vegetable oil on a portion of the soft dry cotton cloth, (like flannel material) to rub off this gluey residue. Yes this requires a bit of elbow grease and that you may possibly have to repeat this action.Don't forget to wash off the vegetable oil residue.For just the straight out 'clouded or hazy lens surface rejuvenation, (to give you a showroom appearance or finish) I have used just ordinary toothpaste and then using a 'swirling motion when doing it by hand' then wipe the surface off with a medium damp wet soft cloth, or if you want to use an electric drill, you could try a lambs-wool polishing buff pad affixed to your electric drill. Again, don't forget to wipe off the toothpaste residue.One must at least try these methods as I have found these methods do the specific job that needed to be done.Remember the safety requirements when using an electric drill.

W40 or similar helps removing sticky things. To clean the lens I just use toothpaste (by hand). Indicators too, but sometimes I put them in the dishwasher as well.
I have not tried it but my daughter told me about using toothpaste to do this. She has watched a number of videos on it and it looks to be effective ???
All this yellowing and hazing of plastic can be avoided if the manufacturers would use glass again. Or at least develop a plastic that is non yellowing. Cheap cars, expensive cars all suffer from this hazing. Great video !!!
my bro did mine which were really bad and they came out like almost new on a 10 year old Matrix ... a local handyman told me another trick, he said you can use the "OFF" spray insect repellent and it does almost the same thing ... gotta try that when they get hazy because this needs to be maintained; it will fog over again.
It is more easy to remove the haze and fog from headlights using ScrubbingBubbles bathtub cleaner. Spray it on, let it work for a few minutes and remove using a "scratch free" kitchen scouring pad.

However I saw one that was a permanent fix, and the guy put an aerosol clear coat on the headlights after wet sanding and everything. But thank you. I've never heard of that. Lol, might just go with the kit anyway, easier to do, though may not be permanent.
Garrett Scott yeah clear coat works very well too and is pretty much permanent. On a serious note go ahead and try using the alcohol to get rid of that sticky tape and other gunky crap. Make sure you wear some gloves or you'll end up with dry skin.
Im using 600 grit, 800 grit, 1000grit 1500 grit 2000 grit, 2500grit vet sanding in order to get perfect results of headlight restauration with wooden small brick. Then I use sharp polishing paste and after all shine and wax paste. Every client dont believe that is possible. Also its possible to make it last longer if u use acrylic laquer.

You can remove tape glue with mineral spirits and a soft cloth, it's how we clean up paintwork after removing decals, don't be tempted to use other paint thinners, good old fashioned mineral spirits are what you want, we had one genius who tried to use some kind of print roller cleaner and he melted his plastics... Ouch!
I'll try this kit, Eric. Looks really good! I also saw another video where a guy used bug repellent spray and a cloth and it had the same results! Haven't tried that one yet as well ;)
russtex i think the bug spray may somehow melt the plastic, this method is basically using grades of sandpaper to remove the scratches and then polish the lens. works pretty good. my headlights were a lot brighter afterward.
You need to buy a can of UV resistant clear-coat and spray when done, or your nice headlamps will turn yellow even faster than they did the first time, because you've removed the original UV protection.

you dry sand the headlights first, following the instructions that come with the kit. it works well. best to apply a UV sealer afterward. when sanding i try to use a dust mask as much as possible. thx!
The kit instructions state, Dry sand at first and second stage, The third step the trizact p3000 with tap water!!!This pad is truly magical as it combined both polishing and sanding!! Best kit made!! end of ! 😊 👍
you could have sanded the tape residue off!!..also you should have spent more time sanding and more time compounding and another tip is after compounding you could've bought some polishing compound wish is a finer compound and that would have made it look new again

You know what works really well? Toothpaste,windex,and a sock. Stick your hand in the sock,put some Toothpaste on the sock,and then spray the headlight with windex and rub the Toothpaste in with the sock. Gradually spray as you're rubbing the Toothpaste in. It works really well.

After you are finished polishing the lenses there is a clear coat that is UV resistant and can help keep the lenses from yellowing in a short time

You should add a clearcoat( a 50/50 mixture of Spar urathane & mineral spirits) to prolong that look.
Good job, by the way it will work on stainless steel also. The orange stuff is a super fine buffing compound, like knife makers use.

You can do the same thing with rubbing compound #1 and #2 grid by hand.
I would be leery to use sandpaper of any grid on my headlights.

I've had good luck using Goo Gone to remove sticky tape residue. Citrus based, so shouldn't hurt the plastic.

u could remove that tape residue with further wet sanding using 800 grid sand paper in early stage, final result could be much better.
I used toothpaste and rag for mine and it worked flawlessly. took about 10 minutes each lens. Night and day difference. Try it!

At my work we use 1,000 grit sandpaper & soap & water. You get better detail when using by hand. Over all cost is abou 50 cents.

Use some clear coat after your done polishing and it will stay clear longer.
Naphtha will take care of adhesives put it is a chemical so apply fast and wipe fast !
