Originally, Dutch was supposed to win when he and the Predator fought "man to man," but it was Arnie who said that wouldn't make any sense. He told them "I can't beat him. He's a monster. I'm just a man," and the story was rewritten with Dutch having to use his wits and his expertise in guerilla warfare to survive.

Shane Black said he couldn't figure out how to end that final fight scene. He took a break from his writer's block and watched some TV. The only thing that was in english was Looney Toons. A Wile E Coyote gag gave him the inspiration for the killing blow.

The log that he finally hits the Predator with is actually the counterweight for the twine which was the actual trap… the twine is positioned between the two logs above with the spikes tied to them, the twine is supposed to pull the Predator up and into those spikes. The fact that he ended up right underneath the counterweight wasn’t part of the plan, it was luck.

Probably widely known, but the actor who played Blaine, Jesse Ventura, was a former pro-wrestler and wrestling commentator who later went into politics and became governor of Minnesota. I've a cousin who's lived the for decades, and they told me when he was in office, you see cars with bumper stickers reading, "Our governor can body slam your governor." Might have made politics more interesting if we just let state leaders fight amongst themselves, but I don't want to get too political.

Billy was Native American, so he had a more spiritual feel towards nature and religious beliefs. That is why he took his "spirit bag" and wrapped it around the hand that he would be holding his weapon to fight with. He cut himself in order to "draw first blood", denying that "honor" from the Predator. Meaning that even if he dies while fighting him, Billy keeps his honor of not only drawing 'first blood', but also shows "no fear in the face of the enemy". Two important aspects to his religious and spiritual belief system in regard to what would be considered "honorable and courageous warrior conduct'.

At 32:11 the Predator was scanning Dutch because he was trying to figure out what made him so special. We don't know how many times this particular one came to hunt men, but out of all the ones he faced, Dutch gave him the most fight. He was looking to see "Are you still human?" At the end when it repeated Dutch's question back at him ("What the hell are YOU?") it was a legit question. He never faced a human so intelligent, strong and cunning that it could best him. The Predator legit wanted to know "What the hell is this prey that he managed to hunt and kill me instead?" Truly amazing movie.

    • @SpectrumAnalysis

The cool thing about leaving some elements of it ambiguous is that we don't really know if The Predator species understand any human language, or if they're just parroting it cos they know it's a good lure. They notice what behaviours we exhibit when certain words are spoken and use that to their advantage to get us to "turn around" or come "over here." It's obvious they use this to taunt us though; it seems "turn around" and "over here" are equally used as lures and equally as scare tactics. The fact we don't know this means that The Predator saying that could just be it parroting the phrase like it's done a million times, and it's just serendipitous for it to have that other meaning, or it could be an element that makes The Predator even more intelligent and frightening. One thing is for sure; it knows how to fuck with Dutch, parroting Billy's laugh not only to show he has the upper hand, but also to confront him with his dead friend's voice.
This is such a cool creature concept.

Umm, no. This predator, like the ones that were sent out in AVP, basically teenagers going through a right of passage to become fully fledged warriors among their race's ranks. For the predator in this movie and the sequel, the other two that were sent out with it already died. However, the predator race was very interested in Dutch and how he was the only human that wasn't a warrior from birth specialist (like samurais and other warriors of legend from the past) to best a predator. After Dutch refused to cooperate with the government when questioned about the event, he escaped custody and was abducted by a predator ship. They discovered that he had exploited their vision and how it differs from ours, which is why they used updated tech in the sequel. They had actually planned to allow Dutch to join the predator race, but he presumably died from his exposure to the predator bomb in the end of the movie. By the way, this is all in the comic extended universe of predator which was the first iteration to crossover the franchise with Alien and the xenomorps. The producers of Predators even wanted to have a Dutch cameo at the end with him among the predator race but Arnold denied reprising his role.

That was Billy's laugh. The predator was just copying him. The predators are trophy hunters, like when people used to hunt lions and hang the lions head on their wall. It seems that their status is higher in their society the more successful a hunter they are, especially is they have hunted and killed something extremely dangerous. The skinning and hanging people is kinda ritualistic and also a way of marking it's hunting territory. You should keep watching the alien and predator movies, I'm sure you'll like them. You also learn a little bit more about the predators in each movie.

My #1 favorite Arnold Schwarzenegger movie!!
Facts you didn't know about the movie:
Jean Claude van Damme played the Predator in some parts of the movie, but quit production as he was tired of wearing the original suit which looked like a giant lizard insect hybrid. He even wanted to kickbox Arnold but the producers refused.
Kevin Peter Hall RIP, 7'2" was cast as the titular alien as he was more of an intimidating opponent for Arnold's character Dutch.
Stan Winston Studios designed the PREDATOR suit and would later return to the franchise for PREDATOR 2 in 1990.
Half the cast and crew got food poisoning except for Arnold and Director McTiernan whom ate Spaghetti O's and PBJ Sandwiches. Schwarzenegger would later hire his own personal Chef to give the actors the food they needed.
Sonny Landham RIP whom played Billy hired a bodyguard to protect people from him as he was prone to violent outbursts.
Landham said in an interview that, "We weren't making a movie, it was a survival story for all of us."
It was 110 degrees in the shade while it was 42 degrees at night.
It rained for 2 weeks making filming even more difficult.
It was a box office success making $100 million dollars ($350 million dollars today) against an $18 million dollar budget.

Predators are trophy hunters, they travel through space and visit and hunt on different planets.
The predator removed it's armor and weapons because Dutch was giving him such a worthy fight. He still wanted to kill him and get his trophy, but he didn't want it to be easy. Dutch earned his respect as a combatant so he wanted to kill him honorably, man than so to speak. If the predator did so he would make that much greater of a trophy.

If they are bare skin and no weapon, he will use fists!
If u watch the movie again, at each kill u can see this code play out. (for the most part) Even when Dillon got killed, Predator was waiting for him to make a move: Was he gonna drop his gun? Or bring it up to bear and shoot? Well...we know the answer.
And depending on how he kills his prey, depends on what he does with their body. Ranged kill: hang them up skinned/gutted. Melee kill: keep their skull as trophy. That's why he was inspecting Dutch's skull side to side when he caught him.

not only that, but also it used specific phrases after killing, like mocking their weaknesses as warriors. And the order of killing was not random too - it starts from worst/weakest ones, then coming for more honorable targets. @Latest Obsession But then Dutch is right. If the intent was to cut comms off, why didn't he take or destroy the radio? He's smart enough to know that the guy with the radio can call for backup, but doesn't know what a radio is?
I don't think the Predator chose Hawkins, Hawkins was just the first of the group who was clearly separated from the others (the unarmed prisoner of course doesn't count). And he was entirely focused on his chase, so he was very easy to surprise: he offered the perfect opportunity for the first kill.
Then, he killed a second guy but was caught (seen) by Mac, who started shooting and called for the others. The Predator didn't want to take them on all at the same time (both because it would ruin the hunt and anyway they still outgunned him despite using inferior technology), so he ran. Then he want back to circling and trying to get them one a time.
The only (small) plot hole is why he tried to attack Dutch when they laid down the net trap. He should have seen the men hiding next to Dutch, why drop right in the middle of them, it was quite clear they were waiting for him. He probably didn't expect such a primitive contraption, but yet it doesn't explain why he didn't see the others. BTW, that explains why he became so cautious and later manage to avoid (almost) Dutch's final trap.

Nice reaction girl, you made it until the end, be proud. A few people already explained how the mind of the predator works, why it hunts and how it does it, so how about this: the predator can only see in infrared (meaning the body heat), that's why you se the thermal images, and the mud supposed to blind it. In real life, this can not be done that easily, the mud only works when wet, and for only a few moments, so, in real life, Arnold would be dead (you can check the Myth Busters experiment about it, if you find it). I hope you react to Predator 2, bye.

    • @mappes1

I think however it is a bit of a misconception. The predators vision changes dramatically when it removes it helmet, and then everything is just reddish like the jungle would probably look and movement based. So the mask is maybe like an ai, filtering out background and highlighting prey. So when arnold took his mud bath, he actually confused the tech in the helmet and not the vision of the predator.
However I think they dropped that aspect in later movies.

They, the Predator are known as the Yautja there entire civilization is centered on *THE HUNT* from the time when they are children up until they're adults, Yautjas spend there lives training and honing there predatory instincts and skills into killing focus by being forced into exile on other planets or by hunting in occupied planetary gaming preserves packed full of the universe most homicidal creatures and species.... And Yes this would include humans and even fellow Yautjas. There ultimate goal is to become a clan leader and being the strongest of all tribes and clans.... There most challenging enemy you probably already know........ The *A* *L* *I* *E* *N* and most Yautjas die when faced with one.... Yautjas have strict culture built around honor.... And they will not harm anything that doesn't pose to them as a threat or a challenge.... Most Yautjas are tasked with taking down the strongest. This includes individuals or large parties such as Ditches Rescue Teams. Hence why he didn't do a Dillon and turn him armless/harmless.
No way should have shortarse Van Damme even ever been considered to have played the Predator, he had to unhuman in power and size.

Not just THIS Predator, but it's whole species, (known as "Yautja") travel the stars to trophy hunt the most dangerous creatures they can find. Just so happens, Earth is a favorite spot, for them; and has been, since the dawn of mankind. When and IF you watch the later movies, you'll learn more, and more about them. (Including the fact that they have RIDICULOUSLY long lifespans, and that their species is very ancient.) As you noticed, they are very intelligent, cunning, their physical strength is off the scale, they can take a HELL of a beating, and 7-7 1/2 feet is actually average in height, rather than the rarity that it is, with humans. You'll also eventually learn that they have different types of Predator. And ALL of them are, to one degree or another, based upon a similar look, and behavior. By the way, as you go further into the movies, your shock and anxiety levels will likely go down, as you learn more about them.

the predator is an ancient alien warrior race called Yautja. they have complicated society structures based off honour and hunting. they go trophy hunting around the universe and value dangerous species highly as trophies. humans are considered quite good prizes because of our intelligence and tech. predators don't harm non combatants, children, elderly or sickly... there's no honour in that. they target soldiers, murders, police etc etc armed, trained and dangerous ppl. their homeland is very hot and so they prefer hot climates.

    Ooooh, that's a classic right there !
Predator is one of these instant cult classic that defined the 80's movies, in a time where children movies à la Spielberg and Amblin studios could happily coexist in theaters with gory movies like Terminator, Aliens, and Predator, and when filmmakers (and the audience) weren't scared of showing blood.
If you put the movie in context of the 80's, it was at the peak of Schwarzenegger's career, where he made himself super famous with his Conan the Barbarian duology, followed by Terminator (these 3 movies instantly put him on the worldwide superstar podium), then followed by Commando, which was a bit of a lesser movie, but still very fun to watch, and basically made the prototype for Dutch's character, the badass invincible commando (that in itself, was a response from Schwarzenegger to Sylvester Stallone's cult classic character Rambo, these 2 being Hollywood's apex alpha macho-muscles action stars of the 80's, and constantly trying to one-up each other !).
In parallel, the 80's were the decade where the slasher genre of movies came out, these infamous horror movies where the boogeyman kills every character of the movie one by one, like Stephen King's IT, John Carpenter's The Thing, the Freddie Krueger saga, the Halloween saga, and the Friday the 13rd saga. Aliens had just came out the year prior to Predator, and the audience was not only ready but craving for big gory action movies with big scary space monsters. There was a real demand there.
Then came in Predator, directed by soon-to-be legendary director John Mc Tiernan (who, btw, was also going to be the director of Die Hard, 2 years later ! So the man actually created 2 of the biggest franchises in Hollywood history. Just saying...).
Earlier, I mentioned the slasher movies genre. Part of the trope of the genre was to put an unstoppable killer going after a bunch of helpless civilians, which made the movie all the more scary, since these people were everyday billies, so very relatable to the audience. Now, the genius part of Predator was to combine the slasher style with super badass characters like Schwarzenegger's Commando type of characters, characters which, up until then in 80's Hollywood, were viewed as invincible, Schwarzenegger and Stallone being the epitome of this trope. Predator completely flipped that script by making these uber badass invincible american action heroes just mere helpless preys against a mysterious invisible foe that just completely toys with them across the whole movie, like a cat toys with a mouse. Seeing such a formidable monster, capable of destroying an entire platoon of these supposedly invincible american military super-heroes absolutely propelled the Predator's status to that of an instant cult classic, making it one of the most badass monsters of the entire cinema history. Putting the setting in a jungle, which at the time was basically the sign of "we don't have a budget, so let's put the movie in the jungle so we can have a big natural set without having to pay for it, plus it's gonna provides infinite amount of camouflage for the creature", and you got all the ingredients for a great movie ! It was truly catching lightning in a bottle, and it was so powerful, all the stars lined up so well (despites the chaotic production) to make this movie one of the most powerful action movies of all times, that even the following franchise could never quite repeat the miracle (Predator 2, with Danny Glover and happening in the city, was interesting storywise, because the final plot twist expands the lore of the Predators race and how they actually have been interacting with Earth for a long time already, but the movie itself was not as great as the first one. Afterwards, every single ones of the Predators movies were more or less fun, but kinda letdown compared to Predator).
Worth mentionning, 20th Century Fox was also the studio that was home to another cult classic space monster : Alien !
And for over a decade, from the end of 80's to the end of the 90's, people were salivating at a potential crossover between the 2 of them. There was quite a few Alien vs Predator comic books that came out back then, and even a famous arcade beat'em all game from Capcom called Alien vs Predator, made in the mid 90's (and boy that game was glorious !).
It's only in the early 2000's that Fox finally gave the green light to a movie that actually crossed the 2 mythical franchises, which became AVP. And to be fair, it was actually a nice movie, with a lot of predator lore, and some badass fights between the 2 species. But by that time, it was kinda too little too late, and the movie ultimately underperformed. It still branched into a sequel, AVP Requiem, but that one was so bad it canned any chances of the 2 franchises to ever cross paths again.
You can definitely watch the rest of the Predator franchise, to get to see how it reemerged over the decades (there is actually a new one that's coming out soon, called Prey), but just know in advance that the first one was the best one, by far !
The 80's truly were a golden age of popculture :
In cinema, you had all these cult classic movies sagas like Star Wars (created in the 70's, but the second and 3rd movies were made in the early 80's), E.T, Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, Jaws, Terminator, Rocky, Rambo, Karate Kid, Top Gun, Predator, Alien (again, created at the end of the 70's, but got its cult classic status in the 80's with Aliens). It was the generation that created the very concept of Blockbuster.
In music, you had Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince, U2, Gun's Roses, Sting, Eurythmics, Phil Collins...
Even in animation, you had legendary series like Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya, Transformers, Thundercats, Macross (basically Star Wars but in anime), Gundam, City Hunter...
And in videogame, it was the advent of Nintendo with the NES and the Gameboy, and especially its cult classic Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and Sega with its Master System, who became the 2 sacred monsters of the videogame industry for the decade to come, looong before Sony's playstation and Microsoft Xbox followed.
Seriously, the 80's were such a treasure trove of imagination that kickstarted soooo many of the franchises we all know today, and frankly, there is no other decade quite like that came after.
There is a reason why there are so many 80's franchises revivals or reboot nowadays : Cobra Kai to Karate Kid, Creed to Rocky, Bumblebee to the Transformers, Top Gun Maverick to Top Gun (seriously, Magy, this one, you HAVE TO go watch it in IMAX. The experience is out of this world, and it will stay in your brain for the rest of your life !), the coming Indiana Jones 5, Stranger things, not necessarily a reboot of any franchise, but just a massive hommage to the decade of the 80's)...
If you have the occasion, you can totally dig in the classic of that decade in your channel, you won't regret it, and for me, it's gonna be a great pleasure to see someone who was born way after it ended react to these classic that completely made my childhood, and made me the animation director I am today.

Oddly enough, John Carpenter's Halloween is in the dna of the original Alien, Terminator, and Predator.

This whole comment is gold and it kinda makes me sad knowing that the 80s was the single best decade ever and nothing else will ever come close, I was born in 85 and I watched all those things as a kid and it truly was the best of times.
