      In the Nightside Eclipse is still the #1 album for taking me into a different universe as far as atmosphere goes. But MGLA are pros at it too... They give a feeling of Nihilism and hopelessness that still manages to make me feel good in a hopeless way. It's almost like accepting defeat and releasing all burdens, there's nothing to worry about because there is nothing. Even your biggest problem holds no relevance in the grand scheme, and once you can accept that you feel liberated.
      Sorry I'm stoned, but ya, every now and then it's good to tug on that nihilistic string we all have deep down. Not live it every day, but keeping in touch with it is healthy imo.

      Man 2015 was the year of Black Metal: Mgła - Exercises in Futility, Batushka - Litourgiya, Panopticon - Autumn Eternal, Ghost Bath - Moonlover. The genre is floated with generic bands, but those album showed that some people still celebrate it as an art. Sadly Ghost Bath couldnt keep it up on their last album.

    It's 3:30 AM here in Belgrade, Serbia and I cannot sleep... Thanks for reacting to my Polish bretheren, Mgla!
    "Self crucified - missed the right tree
    Tore the wrong eye out"
    It's a reference to a Norse god Odin, who self-crucified himself (actually, sacrificed himself to himself) on the Yggdrasil tree and tore his right eye in order to find out the secret meaning of runes. The meaning of this is that, in order to gain knowledge, one has to pay the price - knowledge doesn't come free! But what happens if you pay the price but you don't gain the knowledge because that what you paid was the wrong price? Or that the knowledge you seek doesn't even exist? Just another exercise in futility...
    Also, I think that Sori nailed it on the first time about the 'footnote on the postcard from nowhere' - postcard from nowhere is insignificant; a footnote on this postcard even more so - one would barely read the main text on such postcard, who would want to read a footnote on that! "All this" is one's life, which is so insignificant as the above mentioned footnote - pure nihilism! Futile...
    Glad you're hooked on Mgla. Now, you know how I feel ;-D
    BTW, I would very much like to hear your reaction on Batushka's "Liturgya", any song (ektenya) will do! Those guys are also from Poland, but they mix Black Metal with Eastern (Slavic) Orthodox chants.
    Also, if you want more from Ihsahn of Emperor, check out his former project 'Peccatum' (yeah, yeah, I know it's a sacrilege from the BM point of view) - "Moribound People" for instance (female vocal is Ihriel, Ihsahn's wife).

    To appreciate Mgla, one needs to appreciate drumming. The drummer here is literally a machine. Constant, unrelenting double bass drumming for the majority of the song (and most songs are like that). Plus, it's the hypnotic atmosphere created with the tremolo picked riffs, colloquially called "wall of sound". It's very simplistic, not very technical, but very effective.

    • @Luemm3l
      @Luemm3l 6 лет назад +4

      darkside probably puts the most thought into the music to be honest, his drumming is totally different to many other black metal bands, even if you may not notice on the spot. the accents he sets on the cymbals is very unique.

      @s-viv9232 6 лет назад +1

      Luemm3l I'm not even a drummer and I can hear it. For me the cymbals are super noticable since I only listen to metal I can pick it out maybe! Maybe only septicflesh puts as much thought into their drumming over the years as well.

    In response to your argument about nihilistic art/music being self-defeating-- one could argue that you can explore these dark ideas artistically without being personally restricted to the ideas the art represents. The aesthetic of Mgła being "faceless" on stage is, in my opinion, similar to the corpse paint many black metal artists use for the purposes of "dehumanizing" themselves or taking on a different persona for the art. In most cases, these bands are musicians and artists first, not philosophers or theologians. As a musician myself I can say that these types of riffs and lyrics can be an outlet for negative emotion and a vehicle of catharsis. Does this lessen the potency of the art? I personally don't think so. Good art provokes thought, emotion, and reaction -- and this video alone is testament towards that!

    • @VinAndSori
      @VinAndSori  6 лет назад

      Well I don’t think it lessens it. I’m simply saying the opposite! The force and the gravity of the art speaks against the emptiness they say they believe in. Emptiness is weightless, art is heavy

    • @LOLcifer_
      @LOLcifer_ 6 лет назад +15

      What I was trying to say was that I don't think M. and the rest of the band have some staunch worldview that is entirely fueled by nihilism. I think "Exercises in Futility" is simply an artistic interpretation of nihilist or hopeless emotions that a lot of people feel and connect to sometimes. And of course, the most important thing is the musical execution itself. Here are a few excerpts taken from an interview with one of the members:
      "100% of Mgła music centers around emotional content - we wouldn’t have it any other way. Each note and each word are there for a purpose. The content can probably be approximated to the term “existentialism” and/or “nihilism”. The inspiration can come from whatever stimulus (situation, discussion, work of art…) that results in triggering an emotional response. Within literature, what I’ve found to be resonating are works of Bukowski, Cioran, Celine, Houellebecq, Kafka, Lem, McCarthy, Vonnegut and so on."
      Later he goes on to say:
      "Emotional content of Mgła drifts between struggle, resignation, anger, fear, doubt and spiritual nadir. There is no intent of actively passing on a message. What we do is creating a very finely crafted display cage for our own horror. It is up to the listener to see if there is anything in there that would resonate with them."

      VinAnd Sori Can you not think of art like this as an expression of exasperation that coincides with the sentiment of, "Everything is meaningless!" In Ecclesiastes?
      It's an existential angst that is within every human, even if you rationalize it through a Christian worldview, it is a shared angst amongst all of us.

    • @LG_7984
      @LG_7984 6 лет назад +1

      LOLcifer, well put. Art sometimes is for art's sake, for provocation, but not necessarily is the message always a direct relation to the frame of mind or the particular world view of the artist. It isn't necessarily self-defeating to explore the principles of nihilism in song. It sure makes for a hell of an experience when you read the lyrics along with the music.

    • @LG_7984
      @LG_7984 6 лет назад

      VinAnd Sori - Do they actually say they believe in it? Or are they just exploring the idea of nihilism through their music?

    "I could sit down and listen to this whole record right now"
    DO IT Sori. I listen to this whole record once every week and let me tell you, Its a masterpiece. All of the songs are mind blowing. Darkside (Their drummer) is unmatched in talent. Mgla (pronounced "mg-wah) means "Fog" in Polish. This is a 2 man band consisting of vocalist Mikolaj Zentara (vocalist) and Darkside. Their friends help with the live performances but those 2 dudes record all the studio music.
    PS: I am "Untouchable" from India. Things aren't that bad in cities where its progressive. In rural parts people still get lynched for being untouchable. But if you're intelligent and talented you get a bit of wiggle room as you can move out of potentially hostile areas. I was raised Hindu, I am an atheist now but I do believe that dreams come true for people like us, the prerequisite is immense hard work. I spent my childhood in rural parts of India where discrimination was unavoidable but my father worked hard as an Air force officer to get us out of that situation and I work hard as a computer engineer to make sure my kids won't have to deal with that shit.

    MGLA (mm-gwa) are utterly fantastic, very surprised to see you check these guys out already. They played Australia about a year ago. They are relatively small compared to the likes of Emperor, so when setting up the stage (drums etc.) it was just the band guys, then they went off stage for five minutes and came back with the face coverings haha. Good times, and a great atmosphere they create through relatively simple tremolo riffing.

    "missed the right tree, tore the wrong eye out" is him connecting the different mythologies and all their similarities, I believe. That's actually a nod to Odin, who gave his eye for knowledge. Earlier in the album, Yggdrasil is mentioned along with several nods to Greek mythology and various western beliefs. I think he's basically pointing out that from his perspective, it's all bullshit.

    MGLA are so damn thematically on point. All their songs on each of their albums have the same name as the album, they are all tied together in a common theme. Their lyrics aren't I'd say top-shelf, in terms of ingenuity or even in prose, but they are still good. Musically, however, they absolutely slay. Such powerful riffs and very melodic for being black - and I doubt anyone would say this isn't true kvlt in musical terms. Honestly, I feel like they epitomize the old harangue of extreme metal being closer to classical music than any other genre. Complex and structured, yet beautiful and free-form.
    Anyway, check out With Hearts Towards None by them, next...
    Oh, and if you need a new (and relatively unknown, but absolutely amazing) band to react/listen to, I'd recommend two songs by Wormwood: Tidh Ok Ödhe, and The Windmill.
    I'd be happy to translate the lyrics to English for the first song.

      MGLA are accessible to normies, but they are so goddamn good that black metal purists can't even get mad at them. Sometimes a band is just that good, not very often, but it's magical when it happens.

      LOL, calling Mgla accessible... You are too far removed from normality to know what a normie is, brother. ~16:04 - it's not that there are no patterns and no order at all - it's that we're predisposed to see some patterns above others [some are ingrained in us - like recognizing faces, some we learn] and then we mistake them, or impose them where they don't belong.
    18:07 And no, the pattern of the human being didn't come about randomly. There might be [in some sense] a random element to it, but it's constrained by the nature of reality and selection within the environment.

    Requested two and a half months ago, huh? That's probably about as long as I (and some others) have been requesting Agalloch, hope it's actually in the list somewhere, hehe. :P
    Joking aside, I really like that whole album by MGLA (Exercises in Futility I is my favorite track), and when you were getting into black metal and people mentioned them, I totally supported the idea of you checking them out, especially before going into older stuff like Mayhem (haha!), so it's nice to see you guys finally get to it, and enjoy it

    • @MrZeze87
      @MrZeze87 6 лет назад

      Oh I know, I've said the same before, especially because the song other people have requested is "In the Shadow of the Pale Companion" (there's already another post requesting it in this video, with twice the upvotes)...
      I think he'll hate it because since those first requests, months ago, Vin has complained a lot about songs being "too repetitive", and well, that's most of the song, repeat and change and repeat and change. And on top of that, the guitar work is really simplistic\minimalistic, so he won''t even be able to say "the metal was good" like he could in some "prog", haha.
      But I believe Sori will be able to "get into it", and enjoy the atmosphere of the whole thing... and hey, even if Vin hates it, they can't hate it more than Mayhem right? haha.

    I FUCKING KNEW YOU WERE LIKE THIS! It is so thrilling!
    Well, about the aesthetics it is on purpose. The point is that since they are nihilists, they focus on the art and only the art itself. No fancy lights during the concert, no stupid make up, no stage theatrics. Only music and lyrics. Nothing to deviate the listener from the point of their art (which can be a bit ironic and contradictory, since nihilism is pointless hehe).

  • @SwordOdOdin
    @SwordOdOdin 6 лет назад +3

    Mgla rekindled my love for black metal. The drums are legit insane, the atmosphere is so dense you can feel it, and the minimalism on stage adds a really nice flair and makes one focus on the music instead of the show. The transport the nihilism and misanthropy that Black Metal stands for in a unique and credible way. And this album is one of their masterpieces.
    Respect to you guys for reviewing it =)

      VinAnd Sori They are Luciferian, but they imply that Lucifer is the Holy Spirit/Paraclet. They might be doing it on purpose since they are very well versed in theology, and Im sure they know ‘le péché contre l'Esprit Saint ’ or sin against the Holy Spirit is unforgivable. They are also influenced by the Catholic theologian Léon Bloy (according to an essay written by Raymond Barbeau called Leon Bloy : Un Prophète Luciférien, Bloy himself thought Lucifer/Prometheus was the Holy Spirit) and by French intellectual Georges Bataille. A knowledge of these two authors will help you put their Lyrics in perspective.

      They are metaphysical satanists. They believe Satan is a real Deity causing chaos on earth and in man. They see Christ as a hypocritical figure and sympathize with Satan as having more in common with humans than God. Example: ''Everything except God has in itself some form of privation''. The band's casual amoral attitude and acceptance of death and suffering is extremely frightening, imo. And it separates them from other so called 'Dark' bands.
      The lyrics are pure poetry, though and many quote the bible directly. Examples of beautiful lyrics: ''An exhausting fall into disgrace. On the verge of being deprived of all humanity.'' This is from the Fas album which deals with Satan directly (like a lot of their albums but that one in particular). Another, kind of scary lyric: ''Blessed is he who murders Christ within himself and in his fellow men. Amen.''
      It's interesting how that album goes from suffering to almost celebrating suffering and liberation. Which is, what I think the band is all about. Amoral liberation. Kind of like Watain but Watain are more sloppy (there's probably a better word for it) and DsO always seems extremely focused, precise, and measured. Some of the vocalists screams are terrifying. He's in agony, at times and he gets so intense at times that you can tell he believes what he's singing.

    pagan here, I very much respect you guys and I love watching your videos.
    In the end, we're all human beings. We might worship different gods,
    but as long as we keep our humanity intact, we will always pursue the way of good.
    I love listening to black metal, I love nihilistic, misanthropic and melancholic stuff,
    even though I'm very much a positive and happy person.
    For me, listening to black metal is just a way to express your 'dark' emotions
    without actually acting upon them.

    First I wasn’t feeling this song. Then I listened to it from their studio album along with lyrics. The experience was dramatically more enjoyable. The studio album version you can listen to 1 minute of intro that wasn’t on the live vid version. Obviously studio version was polished and well produced hence a more enjoyable experience. Starting off with a live version especially when you’ve never heard the studio version first will almost never achieve full satisfaction than if you listened to the studio version first. Night and day. These guys can throw down. I like!

      @Pontahyo 6 лет назад

      They only made one album. Maybe its the russian orthodox theme that makes it doomysound? I see it as 100% black metal. Alot of blastbeats, doublebass, black metal vocals, their whole theme and heavy tremolo picking. When i think doom metal i just think of slow and heavy with focus on atmosphere.

    • @AeolethNionian
      @AeolethNionian 6 лет назад

      The clean singing is low and morose and the guitars are as well at parts. The trem picking at parts are slow, and with death doom bands there are faster parts and death growls. I Hurt Those I Adore and Bled White by Novembers Doom and The Drowning Age by Draconian are examples of that.

    the paradox in the first line on the album sum it up: "The great truth is there isn't one ". all sense or pattern is arbitrary and subjective. and so is every belief and conviction. just a tool. pointed at the tolerability of life itself. well, we could say nihilism is destructive and harmful and thats true but enthusiasm for disgusting bullshit is not an option to everyone. If Sori likes this kind of "desperate" vocals, you definitely should react to some DSBM! For the first DSBM experience I'd recommend "With Storming Death" by Advent Sorrow. Lots of emotions in the vocals and very interesting song in general. When you feel really confident, try out "Death - Pierce Me" by Silencer. The vocals is what puts many people off when it comes to Silencer, because they sound "funny", but if you remember that the vocalist was cutting and mutiliating himself while recording that to be in a state of inhumane pain, you'll hear them a total different way. Sorry for a long comment, keep the videos coming!

    You really need to listen to the albums. Live versions of a lot of metal bands don't do the songs justice, simply because it is difficult to get the right live sound to bring out all the nuances of the songwriting. However, that being said, the vocal desperation at the end of the live version is incredible, spine-tingling. I hope you both listen to the full album - I have been listening to black metal since the early 90s and feel like Exercises in Futility is one of the greatest offerings in the black metal genre, period.

    This was a really great conversation, guys. You touched on a lot of important subjects to me, many that I grapple with on a daily basis and some in particular that I was dealing with today.
    On the topic of overcoming your sinful nature, I suffer from sex addiction and it is a constant source of consternation for me, even with God's help, because it is a natural physical impulse that, even though I can rise above it emotionally and spiritually, I can never seem to truly rid myself of, much like the need to eat or sleep.
    I know it will probably never be chosen, but I would so love to see you react to Tori Amos. Her music is the most religious on earth, yet very pagan (and some would even say Satanic). I think the discussion she would spark with you both would be incredibly insightful.

    @Prometheus_666 6 лет назад +1

    Well, as far as the chorus goes, I think the reference is more to Odin than Christ. As Odin was also "crucified" with his spear on the tree of the world, you could interpret the lyrics more in a way that the person who crucifies himself in order to follow Odin in his quest for wisdom, misses the right tree and tears the wrong eye, unlike the god. So, it goes along with the futility thing. And with that as a starting point, I would really like to discuss with you the similarities of christianity with all the - mostly hindoeuropean - religions and your take on that. Being a former greek orthodox christian and atheist at the present, I really enjoy your critiques on the songs, although I disagree with many things you say, and what I like most is that you don't seem blind and ignorant, unlike many followers of religions or whatever, atheists included.

    How about some Inquisition ? Through the Divine Spirit of Satan a Glorious Universe is Known would be an interesting one, plus the song is great. Or Obscure Verses for the Multiverse, Spiritual Plasma Evocation... You pretty much can't go wrong. Stellar and elite music.

    You should definetly check out their song Exircises In Futulity V! It is a more mid-paced song, but of course being this band, it is bound to be good regardless, especially the drums. Interesting lyrics too, would love to hear your perspective on that song. :)

    I really love these two, especially how genuine they are. He's got this grounded world view about it and you can tell it's not entirely his scene, but with her specific melodies, specific lyrics she FEELS it the way it's supposed to hit. Christian or not, you sure have the superion essence in you woman! Keep it up you guys!

    Noticed the reference to Matt Dillahunty. Very smart dude. Love those conversations and debates. Things don’t always have to be nasty and hateful. When we converse in a civil manner, we can all learn something new & find our faults where we may have never known we had any.

    Sorry guys, I have to correct you. The band is Probably from Poland (might be wrong on their country of origin) and so, the letter "ł" is pronounced kind of like the English "w"
