    Just picked one of these up (first reasonable price I’ve seen for an unused one in years). I’m really interested to see how it sharpens up. I’ve sharpened 1095 and XC90 pretty extensively but never 52100. It’ll be nice to have a large, carbon steel Spyderco that can be maintained on my Arkansas stones.

  • @sofakingphat8087
    @sofakingphat8087 2 года назад

    I’ll soak all my carbon steel knives and vinegar. It puts a black patina on the blade. The black patina keeps the oxygenation from happening. It will preserve your carbon steel. It’s like rust only it doesn’t deteriorate the steel. It doesn’t look bad either. I like it.

    52100 is superior to 1095 by a long shot from what I've read. And I have a 52100 knife. It kept an edge through the skinning and boning out of an entire deer. A great improvement over my Buck knife.

    • @garethbaus5471
      @garethbaus5471 2 года назад +1

      52100 is significantly tougher than 1095 with noticeably better edge retention, there really isn't a performance metric by which 1095 isn't worse than 52100 assuming both have a good heat treat and geometry.

    The blade on mine was apparently soaked in coffee and it turned it black.
    It looks badass with the carbon fiber!
    Also, corrosion is not an issue.

      evvignes I've never heard of soaking the blade in coffee. Interesting idea.

      @@michaelchristy4982 strong coffee tends to form a particularly dark patina, especially if the blade was previously etched in ferric chloride (the technique is a common way to increase the contrast in damascus)

    Look through my subs. Wooo!
    a new Mike video!
    That thing is gorgeous.
    Not for me though.
    That pivot area will be a nightmare to keep from rusting.
    That's why I love the stainless clad carbon.
    BTW
    I love the Zdp189 steel.
    Sharpens great on waterstones
    Even up to 8k
    Phenomenal sharpness
    Thanks for the vids Mike.

    it does not matter, and it's important that everyone says your opinion on the topic you're talking about, I'm just trying to say that the 52100 is remarkable for many things, but that it's important to keep an eye on it.

    Makes sense that it would rust. If you think about it ball bearings are normally packed with grease.

    • @michaelchristy4982
      @michaelchristy4982  8 лет назад +1

      Well, the steel has a very low chromium content. That's what makes the difference.
      I wasn't surprised that I got corrosion. I was surprised how fast I got it.

    Thee 52100 steel is good stuff. Busse knives uses it. It does patina but the best part of that is if you you Birchwood Casey cold blue your corrosion issues are finished! 30 inclusive is a bit thin and 52100 will actually work better at 40 degrees inclusive!

    • @michaelchristy4982
      @michaelchristy4982  6 лет назад +1

      Richard Blaine given the RC that Spyderco is heat treating to, and the fact that it’s a folding knife, 30 inclusive worked just fine. I could see 40 if it was a chopper.

    Do you have a certain site you get all your sprint runs from at I assume the best price? Amazon has good deals but sometimes with sprint runs they are much more. Like my para 3 cru-wear was 180$ on amazon but I found it for 125$ on knifeworks or something ...I want a military s90v sprint if I can find it. Or some sprint run military since I don't have one period. And I want another pm2 but in a sprint. And I wish I got the manix 2 in m4 on bladehq but missed it. So many choices! Where do you check??

    • @michaelchristy4982

      Paul Lonardo I stick to online knife retailers. I try not to buy Spyderco’s from Amazon. My usual sites (for Spyderco) are Knifeworks, BladeHQ, Knife Center, Rivers Edge Cutlery, Bento Box, etc.

      Michael Christy Hey man I was looking for some sprint run spyderco and ended up at www.cutleryshoppe.com and was pretty impressed with their prices. Lowest prices on sprint runs I have seen yet, and a few cool exclusives for great price. A couple examples is a s90v native lightweight orange for 95$, the manix 2 composite 154cm/s90v for 199$(I've only ever seen them for 240$) and a bunch of other good deals! Hope you check it out. Not sure on shipping prices or really anything else about the site buts its certainly legit and out of USA.

      I've heard two things on the choice of steel... I've heard there has been a good demand for it for a long time, and I heard that people asked for it in the Spyderco forum and Sal said, "ok". I'm not sure which it is, if either. Or maybe both.

    52100 won't have the edge retention of s30v but about the same as vg10. 52100 will get sharper than anything Spyderco has ever used the only other steel that will get as sharp is AEB-L. they're both extremely fine grain structures. 52100 is what Bob Kramer uses and he makes the best kitchen knives in the world. You Sally's that only like stainless you need to man up. 52100 is SUPER easy to sharpen not like most stainless, i make knifes ive used many difference steels and 52100 is one of the best. Don't be a baby worrying about rust once it develops a patina it will never rust like a old hundred-year-old wrench!

    • @michaelchristy4982

      You need to make sure you're hitting the apex of the edge. You can do the sharpie trick to see where you're hitting. Also, what steel are you working with? And which angle setting are you using?

    • @EarthAlien51
      @EarthAlien51 8 лет назад

      i am using the 30 degree angle working with german D2 tool steel, n690 cobal, 154cm and cts xhp so far. I ordered all the things i need to achieve one of the highest levels of sharpness already also 150k and 200k grit diamond paste. Also 5 to qurter micron diamond pastes and sprays, pikal polishing liquid and 1 leather strop :)

    This knife doesn't make sense imo. 52100 if its taken hard enough is a nice, tough fine grain low alloy carbon steel which makes a good steel for many applications in a knife blade. But, using it on a EDC even a 'bigger' one like this makes no sense. You're gonna be sharpening that thing daily and still not happy with it, cuz I doubt it's thin enough or hard enough to where the 52100 would shine even as a slicer like say a kitchen knife. If you carry this knife, make sure you carry a polishing stick loaded with diamond compound cuz it will lose bite after two cuts. I don't need to own it or touch or watch this video to know that. Thats just what 52100 is. If you dont care about corrosion something like k390 is an infinitely better choice for a knife like this. Anything from 10v down to 3v would make a good choice depending on how thin and/or how hard its used. Even magnacut would be fine for this.
