A great thing here is that, not only is this a great knife, but it’s actually cheaper here in the UK than over the other side of the pond. You don’t see that very often!
Thanks for elaborating on the diamond progression, finish etc. The sharpening world is greatly benefiting from you sharing your knowledge, insight and experience.
corismsyn thanks.
Fantastic work here, really. Like all your videos, I appreciate it not just for the information you provide, the testing you do, but for the way that you approach and present this hobby. Your unique , earnest way of thinking and talking about these topics really changed the way I thought about knives and sharpening, and I'm sure I'm not the only one you've sent down the rabbit hole. Thanks.
chris pregent thank you Chris.
I appreciate the time you put in to these videos. You have helped me expand my thinking on sharpening for sure. Keep them coming.
Outpost 76 thank you.
Thx for sharing the stones you been using and reasons why they work for you. I get a great working edge from the tools I been using but it’s time I go after the optimal edges possible and understand apex and geometry and how it adds to allowing any giving knife and it’s steel.
What an interesting video! I was captivated from start to finish... excellent.
Manly is really nice. They are well known and loved here in germany. They really know what they're doing. Nice geometry, nice steels and good customer service.
I just got 2 of these in s90v for crazy cheap. One in blue with red liners and camo. Pretty pumped. Going to sharpen them soon and start to carry one at work.
I've been experimenting with bonded diamond lately and you're right, the edge cuts very differently than one done with plates, Great video.
I picked one of these up recently and I can say that the initial edge retention was similar to what you experienced. I have sharpened the knife but have not checked edge retention since sharpening. My version is the purple digicam.
The consummate professional! Great video as always man.
kevin ogrady thank you brother. And thanks for the lead on these knives.
very informative, as always. Enjoyed the video.
James Miller thank you.
I have a Peak in S90V, it’s a great cutter, probably better than my ZDP Endura. I think most every knife I’ve owned needed at least one sharpening to bring out its potential. I’m planning on picking up a Wasp soon.
Given how thin it is behind the edge most likely the steel was overheated.
Some great insights in this video, looking forward to the Peak review.
Michael Christy vid!
Fuck yea...
(Grabs coffee.. silences entire house)
SuperSteel Steve LOL. Between that and “patina whisperer”, you have some of the best comments I’ve seen.
@@michaelchristy4982 lol hahaha I hey man good knives and good vibes!
Just a fan of your work brother.
Stellar review. Thank you. I favor thin blades and was lucky enough to snag one from the mfg's. website.
Bruce Mack nice.
I like how sturdy it is. I made it so it's just solid side to side.
Good review but another question is at what angle are your edges and what are the differences between knives or even the same knife after resharpening.
Thanks Michael!
I'm glad you got one of these knives, been thinking of one personally. Do you think you'll be reviewing the Peak in the near future?
Caleb Termorshuizen yes. Got a video or two to do first though.
Late comment but thanks again for another great video! Gonna order one of these as soon as they are back in stock. .26mm behind the edge is CRAZY thin. To go that thin I've had to go to KREIN regrinds on my knives. Can't understand why more factories don't do this. Always look forward to your vids Sir!
morati1963 thanks. These are worth the order.
Hello Michael, Thank you for all your videos. I'm a long time fan, think they're great, and have definitely learned from them. On this video at about 16:15 you flip over the Ken Swartz 3K and speak of the Spyderco UF. Is that what's on the back of the 3K? It looks to be smaller than either the 8x3 or 8x2 - and most definitely caught my attention. I do all my sharpening hand held, similar to the way you do. What size is that UF & where can I get one, or the 3K/Spyderco UF combo? Thanks in advance
Willin' it’s a combination pocket stone that I asked Ken Schwartz to make for me. I wanted a pocket stone that could get very high carbide steels very sharp. There’s another version that I’ll be reviewing soon.
Manly shoots me weekly emails and after seeing key reviews by key reviewers I’m deff getting me the wasp Sandvik steel 12C27
Great video. Do you have a beginners hand sharpening video?
Harry Wright no I do not. If you’re beginning, you have to put time in on the stones.
I know your testing their s90v but it’s another testament that if that one is working like that then should point the good qualities in their 12C27 I’m hearing
Outpost 76 tested it in 12c27 and it did as well as alot of s30v tier steels
Good video nice knife and the price is right .
little woody seriously I mean 90 bucks for s90v take that benchmade lol
Nice review Michael!
Jason D. Stone thank you.
@@michaelchristy4982 I have a hair whittling question for you. I have noticed that the edge has a harder time whittling or severing a hair the more convex it is, and the closer to a V-grind the better it whittles or severs a hair. What do you think?
Jason D. Stone sounds right. There’s a number of factors at play here. A straight V grind is more acute. Also, with a V grind, it’s easier to continually reach the apex in sharpening, where as with a convex, it’s easy to miss the apex because of the rounding of the bevel.
@@michaelchristy4982 How would you go about making a mirror edge that still had a high sharpness and retained slicing aggression? I have been able to do it but it takes a lot more time than just a sharp edge.
@@michaelchristy4982 I had another two questions. What do you think about going back to your last stone for a few passes after stropping, and what do you think of stropping on plain leather.
That triple stop is very strange. I’m sure it wouldn’t take long to get use to. But I’ve just never seen that before.
neroknives I was in the same boat, but I got used to it quick.
I dont think the edge was overheated from factory. The real reason to me more looks like soft decarburization during the heattreat. This happens even with vacuum/inert gas heattreat in scale of something like 0.1mm.
If they dint grind off a bit off the edge after heattreat, exactly this will happen.
I am a knife maker and i use extensively powdered steels like elmax/s90v/m390 etc.. all do the same after heat treat, you have take something like 0.3mm from the edge after heattreat to avoid that.
I own three Manly knives; the Commrade, Patriot and Peak models all in D2 steel. I am happy with the performance of the D2.
I have not had to re-profile the edge yet and use the Spyderco Sharpmaker and a strop to maintain the edge.
Fit and finish on all three knives is excellent. I greatly appreciate your videos and the
your outstanding sharpening skills. What is your opinion of the new Spyderco Mantra 3 and the the profile of the cutting edge? Have
a great day.
barry levitt the new Mantra is not on my list. The new cutting edge is a little strange, but wouldn’t be hard to sharpen. The Sharpmaker would make it very easy to do.
@@michaelchristy4982 Thanks for the information.
Mike Neil it’s comparable in size to a Para 3. I think they have a larger version of it though.
Please do keep us updated on how it holds up. I'm interested to see your thoughts on the peak as well!
Galeocerdo123 I’m putting it through the paces already.
Haha. “Got the bad end of the bat on that one.” Unbelievable amount of work and effort went into this video. And I’m sure the edge was probably over heated, at .010 behind the edge, production companies that make knives twice as thick, can still burn them.
neroknives thanks man. Yeah, this video was much bigger in a lot of aspects then I intended. More sharpening, more testing, more dialogue, and longer video. I was going to start another video this morning, but couldn’t because of space. I had to post this one first.
I wouldn't mind sharpening a knife out of the box if I had the choice to make sure the edge wouldn't be overheated from factory sharpening. Would the flat grind be applied before or after heat treating s90v?
Anthony Waldrep it depends on how the maker or shop does their grinding.
Hi, thanks for the nice video. I have S90V manly and naniva chosera stones on the way. Would it be ok to use Naniwa chosera stones with S90V? I got different opinions when I looked through the net.
Murat Mustafa you can give the stones a try. Maybe you’ll be able to get the knife sharper then it was, but the stones won’t cut the vanadium carbide in the steel.
Michael Christy thanks for the answer.
Is there a reason why you sharpen the tip area separate from the rest of the blade? How do you know where to lift up to to match both angles? I’ve been trying to learn freehand for a over a year and at the end my bevel is in steps from changing the angle... frustrating...
crf450r bullet david I often start on the tip and work my way down to the heel. It’s not always what I do, but often. Learning how to transition is something that takes time and practice. It’s something you just learn to estimate and make whatever small adjustments needed as you go on a particular knife.
Michael Christy thank you! I’m not gonna give up. My sharpening isn’t totally crap but I definitely need more practice. Have a good thanks giving. I can’t wait for the Rex45 military. It’s out at a couple sites but I’m just gonna wait a little longer.
Bang for buck knife!
Almost looks like the blade has started to recurve since your sharpening? Nice video. Oh did your Manly eventually get a little chip on the blade? Iv heard that it can hit the backspacer. I just ordered one, guess I’ll find out.,
jerry millett that’s called blade rap. I haven’t had that issue with mine.
Michael Christy ok. Thank you.
Hello, Michael it always seems like you are doing all your reprofiling on the DMT Coarse. Is there a a reason why you do not go with a coarser option or don't you just feel the need to do so? How long does it usually take you to profile and apex on the coarse?
Till Rehfeld it only takes me minutes to reprofile on the coarse, which is why I don’t bother with a coarser stone. Stone in hand sharpening is extremely aggressive and gets the job done very quickly.
@@michaelchristy4982Thanks, I appreciate your reply. That sounds great. Though it seems like a pretty rare technique with only cliff stamp coming to my mind being present on RUclips with in hand sharpening. Very good company I'd say. I'm sure it just takes a lot of practice in addition to talent. Looking at your first videos when you sharpened with full strokes on a SM rod I'm almost certain it took you a lot longer back then.
But how does reprofiling stone in hand work, because you obviously can't look for the edge being flush with stone. Do you shoot for a consistent gap between stone and edge for a few strokes and then just sharpen away?
Till Rehfeld reprofiling stone in hand is really strange, because it’s a feel thing. Knowing the angles from one hand to the other and knowing you can hit them. It wasn’t something I was shooting for at first, but just something I realized I could pull off at some point. The first steel I did it on was S110V.
Given the specs, especially the blade geometry, that thing should fly through material like a laser.
The only thing that's a little concerning is that the tip was sticking out after only a couple of sharpenings.
Is that a design flaw or did you remove a lot of material because the blade is so thinly ground?
West Senkovec I do think there’s room for improvement in that part of the design, but it was an easy fix and I very much like the model.
Goodness, you went the distance on this one. Great vid, it does seem that the edge was slightly overheated, I mean s90v at 61 that thin, it would be easy to do, as I hear s90v a bear to grind. There's another CO. that says there s90v is at 63, way hard for s90v.
K Grimm that does seem hard for S90V. What company?
@@michaelchristy4982 Kestrel, I came across them while looking for a good lightweight fixed for edc, found the ovis hunter, looks great. They heat treat at Peters they say, and the S90V knife is called the mountain caper.
K Grimm interesting.
I think the "ratcheting" action of the knife allows Manly to use a stronger backspring. If they didn't use the multiple stops it might be too hard to open.
amo757 you might be right.
The European Knife Regulations have a lot to do with it. No lock blades, so they think it’s safer, & closer to a lock blade, without being a lock blade. I’ve managed to acquire a sample of all their Models, & I’m not disappointed, yet. I don’t need a more expensive knife, once I’ve found the same quality. I’m pretty knifed up, now.
I just got an email, 20 minutes ago (Nov. 15th, 2018 8:50 PM Central). That these are back in stock.
Steve Kluver nice.
They were getting out of stock, as I was shopping, but I did snag 3 more! Get on their list, order quickly!
I like it, almost has the same shape as the ritter grips, at this price range I cannot see why anyone would not want to buy them....
That's an interesting knife, I don't think I'd ever heard of the manufacturer. And Mr Christy's expertise RADIATES lol
Jonathan LeBlanc thank you.
With metallic or resin bonded diamond stones the aggression or lack there off all depends on how they are dressed.
Rutger Mulder how many times have you dressed metallic bonded stones?
@@michaelchristy4982 I haven't. But i have been following the forum topics about em and sharpeners that have used em. Lots to be discovered what works best.
Great knife but opening g and closing mine is a full workout, it's horrible. Tried everything but it's so stiff and the 4 stops are just overkill.
Great knives. I'd own one myself but every time I look they are out of stock in the configuration I wanted.
Tactical Center yeah, you have to be ready to jump with these.
Tactical Center they have them now if your interested just to let you know
wish they made this with an easy pull and a lock
Seems to me at .01 behind the edge you are maybe pushing the limits of edge stability of S90v especially at 61+. Just a guess however. You would be the authority 👍. USB microscope would be handy in this situation.
Matthew Forrest well, I cut over 2000 inches of cardboard with this knife in the making of this video and didn’t have a problem. Maybe in the next video, I’ll get to some other materials to work with.
Michael Christy yeah I seei performed well, though not sure it performed well for S90v. Doesn’t your testing usually leave S90v ahead by a noticeable margin? I figured since it is hardened outside the working hardness speced by crucible it might leave the super thin edge a bit fragile.
Matthew Forrest I wouldn’t have been surprised if it had been ahead, but that testing can be left for another day. I just wanted to know if it was on the level, which it is.
If you see this would you say they do a better heat treat then spyderco does on s90v they definitely go thinner have you noticed any difference in edge longevity etc thinking about getting one of these or the peak price is unbeatable for s90v if well heat treated heard spyderco doesn’t have a great heat treat on a lot of steels and that they do em kind of soft
bp69 Spyderco’s HT on S90V is better from what I’ve seen so far. You want to be careful where you’re getting your information from. Lot of misinformation in the knife community right now.
Michael Christy really huh lot of conflicting information I may still get one just for the thinness but from what I heard spyderco does a soft heat treat on a lot of steels there vg10,m390 they seem to treat most things at about 59hrc regardless of steels properties
bp69 you sure that’s a fair statement? How big is your sample size?
Because I’ve seen Spyderco’s tested with these values:
S90V - 60
M390 - 61
ZDP - 65
M4 - 62.5
S110V - 62
That doesn’t exactly fit into what you’ve heard, does it?... maybe what you heard was just circumstantial bullshit.
Michael Christy I heard a bento box m390 exclusive at 59 s90v at 59 and cts xhp at again 59 what I heard may just
Be bull but I do know that spyderco does a bad job with vg10 at least
Michael Christy no complaints with my s110v and zdp however I have heard there s110v is at 59 aswell but zdp is solid
I admire your ability to be a knife nut and still have arm hair lmao 🤣 I cannot seem to grow any as it gets shaved off before it could ever look somewhat normal 🤦♂️🤪 hell I no longer wear shorts often because I've taken to the leg hairs also 🤣
great looking knife, but that billboarded clip is such a turn off for me.
XnMojo that’s surprising. It really doesn’t bother me. Some people really don’t like it.
What is the price.
gloria cardile currently $85
gloria cardile 79.66 usd
Geez man you're meticulous 👍
John Eli thanks.
I could really do without the manly on the clip, but its a great knife
