- How to replace a Honda Mower electric starter motor. Weak starter design has rubber grommet for clutch which wears out from friction. If starter runs but does not engage battery is probably OK. It should read a little over 12 volts
I saw the wife walk by. Bet she was thinking, yep , he's talking to himself as usual !!! Great video, I just bought one with elec start and was wondering how difficult it would be to change. And hats off to you, no grunting g when you went to your knees to do the job, and you stayed there through the whole video.
Put the solenoid on yesterday. No sweat. May have taken 20 minutes because at 84, I don’t move as quickly. Thanks for your installation video.
Kent
I think you did great Kent! Thanks for the feedback.
Thank you for your no nonsense /straight to the point approach to the problem, I have the same mower , on mine the starter turns but the gear does not click upward to engage the motor. I ordered the battery thinking not enough power may be the cause, my next move is to replace the starter , I still want to clean the starter though, before forking out $70 for a new starter, your video has helped me a ton, thank you.
This was perfect for what I needed.
When guys our age were starting out, the internet and these videos didn't exist. Nowadays you can find a video for just about anything and it is always better to watch someone else do it before you try it yourself.
Thanks to videos like this I've been able to repair a lot of things that I might not have attempted before, because I can verify that there won't be any surprises once I get half way into a job.
Thanks again for taking the time to do this.
Thanks for the comment Steve, you made my day.
I agree entirely. I'm a little younger, but have been wrenching on all my vehicles for the best part of 40 years now. Sometimes I'd get into a job and realise something wasn't right, then would have to stop, go to the manual with my greasy hands and then figure out what step I missed, did in the wrong order or whatever. A video like this helps tremendously.
Tangential to the video itself, in recent years I've taken to using the term "gal" and my wife was sort of perplexed by it. I basically told her that using words like "gal" is something you do when you get to a certain age, that of which I have finally reached.

So, also as a sidebar, I told my wife, AKA, my gal, that I was going to record a video, in the garage, and would she steer clear of it until I finished. Well, she did, but as you can see, she is no dumb gal, and managed to get a cameo of herself in the video, walking up and back on the walk. LOL
I found the service manual on my HRX 217. I think you could have saved yourself the parts cost if you had followed the service recommendations. The starter, like any starter, requires that the drive plate and pinion gear in the upper part of the starter need to be cleaned and that the drive plate, spring, pinion gear and shaft need to be dry and clean (by using a parts or brake cleaner). If you had cleaned the upper assembly and made sure it was dry and very clean it would have started without a motor replacement. The cleaning is what creates the conditions for the gear pinion to engage correctly. It gets dirty with age and dirt. I cleaned mine and it starts like a new starter.
I actually read your comment and did what you suggested, the starter on mine was fairly clean but I made it spotless and still it would not engage even with clean gears. , the battery on mine is new and it wasn't the problem either.the only part left was the starter so reluctantly I ordered it.
Yes our starter pin gear was slow to engage and retract. I cleaned with brake cleaner then used dry chain lubricant. Works now 👍🏼
Yes, I cleaned mine with electronic connnection spray cleaner and it works fine now!
E.S. asked a good question, how can you tell if the starter motor is bad. If your battery is showing a voltage of 12.4 or at least over 12 volts then the battery is probably OK, so then it is probably the starter motor. I suspect this starter is undersized and I think sometimes the compression release mechanism is not working correctly and over working the starter after the engine warms up. I notice my mower turns over faster when cold. Also, do not spay WD40 into the starter gear, because there is a rubber clutch grommet and not steel bearings that engage the gear. I do not know if this rubber clutch like grommet is available to replace, but that appears to be the part that wears out.
Thanks so much for this informative video. It encouraged me, and gave confidence to access the starter.
I have an HRR series which I purchased in 2013, but the starter began failing last summer; so today I took it off and gave a little 3in1
oil spray which did help considerably, but I am going to order a new starter tomorrow. By the way, I could not find the correct part #
Using my Serial #, so I was very thankful that you included the number in the comments.
Cheers, Gray
The 3in1 oil I used was Lock Dry Lube in an aerosol can, it has different characteristics from the regular oil, so it may not have a problem with the rubber roller.
@@graymczeijsh3072 Good job Gray. Thanks for the feedback
Thank you for the video, helped a lot.
Thank you for such important video for me. My starter key was not working which could be the starter motor.
You're welcome , feel free to ask questions
Dam good job glad a guy your age do it and you did it on your knees which I can not do hat off you sir.
P.S. I'm impressed that you were able to remain on your knees for that long....good on 'ya.
Every year gets a little harder but we must keep going for as long as we can.
@@gregtharp9355 Yes Sir. A little pain is tolerable. Keeping going is indeed he key.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge on this. Very Helpful!
RUclips videos have helped me and there was none on this starter so it was time to pay it forward. Thanks for your comment
The same thing happens to my mower, where did you buy the electric starter motor, sir, can you give me the page and how can I buy it? Thank you.
Thank you
Around eleven minutes. Thank you
Good job John.:)
Well done sir, thanks for your instruction!
You are welcome, thanks for the comment
Greg-Great video, thanks. However, I removed and replaced mine and the starter motor still just spins but doesn't engage. Any recommendations? Thank you!
You can try to charge your battery if you have not already. Honda makes a charger. Also, you could try to jump the mower from your car. That would show a bad battery. Be careful doing that because a car battery has a lot of amps and a big spark could happen if you touch the wires wrong. Trying it one time should not hurt the mower starter. If you have a voltage meter the mower battery should read well over 12 volts. 12.4 at least.
@@gregtharp9355 Thanks, Greg. I was also thinking it could be the battery.
@@SB-yq6nd I have found that just running the mower does not charge the battery enough, so I use the Honda charger. Any low amp 12v charger would work
@@gregtharp9355 Great info, Thank You!!
Much appreciated. Thanks for the effort!
My pleasure!
I know electric start lawnmowers are all the rage these days..but every Honda motor I have had for the past six years always starts on the first pull.
Hello Greg, whats the part number? i have the same issue, same mower
Honda 31200-Z0L-821, I just happened to be on my email
The first thing that you did wrong was spray it with WD-40, it is not a lubricant, it is a water displacer, not a lubricant.
You are right Herbert, just like Mike Mehring said below, but as I have gotten older I tend to rush things and taking things apart without a manual is a bad habit. I did not realize the starter had a rubber grommet for the clutch, so I should not have sparyed anything on it, but installing a new starter was still better than taking it to a dealer and paying more than $70 to get it fixed.
I'm working on my neighbors that is having this problem, glad to know it isn't able to be rebuilt and is a plug and play starter. 70 dollars is steep as heck though i think she will want to pull the rope.
Yes $70 is steep and you should check the battery. It should read 12.4 volts or more but that is not a guarantee the battery is good. Good luck.
When I bought a battery charger, I got a wrong part because it must go by series number too.
It should charge the battery while you are mowing, my daughter and I have the same mower and we do not charge the battery we just mow. My electric starter works best when the mower is cold.
@@gregtharp9355 Thank you for your video. I have starter motor problem too. I just received the deliver and I will fix it soon. Honda Lawn Mower is one of the best, one starts will work during the cold weather. I have HRR2169VLA over four years. In the past, I had three Craftsman, but they are killer, not good.
Hi Greg , I am certainly like you , If you can save a buck doing it yourself
Starter motor "made in China" would not last. Shipping is free from Amazon if order over $25.00
Don’t understand why people do videos like this, then put the camera so far away from the work that you can’t actually see what’s being done…..
Yes, so even though I do not normally do videos myself, I have been helped by so many RUclips videos myself and since there was not a video for changing this mower's starter, I decided to record it. This video has seemed to help some people and that makes it worth the effort I made doing it.
You are right, but I did this video, my one and only, to pay it back for all of the videos that have helped me.
I was able to see video well by zooming. Thanks for video which helped!!
Thank you for making the video. My starter just quit and I didn't want to buy a shop manual to repair it. Where is a good place to buy a replacement start?
