I just did this maintenance today and I feel like you need to rock the mower side to side to get most of the oil out. I put it to it's side like in this video, I thought I had successfully drained out all the oil, but when I went to stand it back up, more oil came out. Hence why I ended up rocking it. A lot more oil came out.
FYI, when you un-tip your mower during the oil drain, it will leave a mess on the floor if you don't follow the drain with the pan. I figured that would happen but had to try to verify. Verified. Now on to the oil spill kit.
I like how they show the bottom of a normal mower deck full of matted clippings, then in the next shot there's a perfectly clean brand new deck that's never seen a blade of grass. 😂
My starter recoil needs to be replaced on the model shown in this video. I found the part online. The directions in the manual give very little info on removing the cover. I found the little red tabs but no luck on what to do. I contacted Honda as per my manual said to do with any questions, but they are not helpful at all. Please share any info on how to remove cover. Thank you
Honda should also include a video on properly servicing the transmission in the likely event that it's not properly filled and air-bled. My HRX217HYA that I purchased new from Home Depot in March 2022 was always slow during self-propel - i know that it's under warranty but I wanted it fixed correctly the first time without having to wait and fight over whether it's a warranty service- and I found out that the mower's transmission barely had any fluid in it despite having a "Passed" sticker and QR code. I don't think I'll be purchasing any more Honda power equipment or upcoming battery equipment in the future.
I always buy power equipment from the dealer, never from big box stores. I’m 70 years old and have never had an issue yet. I don’t trust workers with zero training to properly check the equipment before it’s sold.
It was delivered to my door, unopened and brand new in box. And I set it up myself. It shouldn't need any adjustments, and even the small engine dealer shouldn't be expected to remove the transaxle to check whether the hydrostatic fluid was topped off correctly.
I would suggest removing the spark plug boot before doing any maintenance, including oil changes. It makes sense from a safety perspective and as a way to help prevent accidental engine damage.
@@righand When a lawn mower is laid on its side as shown in this video, a simple and inadvertent partial rotation of the exposed blade can start the engine. If that happens, even for a moment, those blades will immediately begin turning very rapidly and can obviously cause very serious injury. Removing the spark plug boot prevents that, and also helps prevent someone from starting the engine when they should not (e.g. before oil has been re-added).

I ONLY do my cooking with recycled lawn mower oil. I like earthy, hearty foods and nothing gives you that extra flavor quite like lawn mower oil. On special occasions, you can even mix in just a touch of log splitter hydraulic oil. Good luck!
My experience with this mower after 4 mowing seasons is use conventional oil not synthetic it will run the same but mine Idle's better with the conventional. I think it has something to do with the governor system.
How do recommend cleaning the NeXite deck? Since it’s not metal, I don’t think a metal scraper would be a good idea and it would probably gouge the underside. Power washer? hose? Soft brush? Thanks!
@@kennglee did you make a mess? Sounds like user error. I use the same oil pan I use for cars oil changes. Open cap, tip the mower. It's stupid simple.
It’s actually not too horrible. A drain plug on top of the deck usually just makes a giant mess on the top of the deck, drain plug underneath? Gotta block up the mower then try and take a drain plug out and catch the oil? I guess a vacuum extractor could be a better solution? Or just take the dipstick out and crank it on the side!
@@drepop803 I have a mid 90's HRA215SX which also has a drain plug underneath the mower. To use it of course you have to tip the mower on its side to remove the drain plug then lay it back down again to drain the oil which sometimes results in the catch pan being bumped because you can't see it and making a mess on the ground. When tipping it back to install the drain plug also easy to get some oil dribbling into the blade clutch mechanism. Draining the oil through the fill tube allows you see the oil coming out so its easy to adjust the catch pan before a mess is made. My new HRX217HY doesn't have a drain plug underneath thus why I said some do, some don't.

I had to tip mine five times to get the oil out, the sixth time only a few drips. It does seem that oil gets caught somewhere when trying to drain.

The oil level can be anywhere within the grid or cross-hatched area of the dip stick.

@Tony M I have a grass buster scraper, doesn't hurt anything but yea washing after your done mowing is a good idea.
I use the 45 degree side of an old wood deck baluster.
I use Gunk or Mo Deck lawn mower spray. Just spray underneath and hose the grass clippings off after done mowing. Reapply and redo the steps.
What about removing fuel?

What would happen if over fill the engine oil?
It will be blowing white smoke!
You’ll see blue smoke shooting from exhaust and the excess oil will weep from the air box and soak your air filter with oil
