Keep in mind that all this was made by 3 guys! The change ups were meant to imitate changing stations on your radio dial. The song celebrates all that was good about free radio at the time, but also cautioned about "corporate" takeover of the music business. "One likes to believe in the freedom of music, but glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity" Neil Peart was a lyrical genius!

You have lots of songs from Rush to check out. The musicality and the lyrics are on a different level. Pure art and craft from three friends that weren’t in it for fame..not many can say that.

Rush was a pioneer of prog rock. Odd time signatures and copious tempo changes are staples of Rush. The genius of that trio is undeniable. It can’t be understood by everyone, but glad you recognized it, Shon

When he says "the words of the profits were written on the studio wall" is a direct reference to Simon and Garfunkel song the sounds of silence And the sign said, "The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
    And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence"

Each of those 3 guys is a virtuoso in their own right. Whatever song they made, they always brought their best.
"Subdivisions" would be a good one to hear next. It's spoken to anyone who felt like an outsider, since it was released.
    Have an amazing day.

    LOVES Me a Good Trio.
Rush is a Canadian Band, “Lyrically, the song is a lament on the change of FM radio from free-form to commercial formats during the late 1970s…The song's name was inspired by Toronto-based radio station CFNY-FM's slogan” -Wikipedia
In 1980, when this Song was Released Radio was How the majority of people listened to music and heard New Music, but they had to Wait for It to be Played. Radio also drove Record Sales more than anything else, at that time.
The Internet changed everything. The Music Industry as it was before the WWW, is Gone. History. It brought a new paradigm.

We all love… The radio… let’s face it. Since time began… the radio has touched all of us in some way… bad, good, indifferent, …. We all have a “radio moment “. Even more than TV… the radio touches our soul at one point. In our youth, middle age, old age. We wonder about the DJs. They become our friends. We act like we know them on a personal level. Which? In fact we do. Neil Peart nailed all those feelings in this masterpiece

  • @lindaward5376
    @lindaward5376 9 месяцев назад

A couple more Easter eggs from the video: the car that Neil is driving in the first verse is a Red Barchetta, referring to a song from their subsequent album Moving Pictures, for which I recommend the Exit Stage Left performance; the young woman holding the Rush album is Donna Halper, a Cleveland area music director who put Rush on the musical map when she put on their song Working Man and the mainly working class listeners instantly identified with the lyrics - they performed it there as part of their 2011 Time Machine Tour, a performance that is pure 🔥. Cheers from Toronto!

Geddy: It was like, okay, we need to stay fresh and change the way we do things ... And we could have a song deliver more - in terms of climax - in a shorter period of time. We could still tell a story in a song, but without hitting you over the head with it. And in terms of overall concept, we could also make the threads that connect each song a little more subtle. We were looking for more diversity ... Music was changing, and radio was changing. Our access to great music - the way we were getting it on FM radio, for example - was dying and becoming more commercialised. The Spirit Of Radio carries that feeling, and I think that people related to that song because of the way the music industry was going. It wasn’t about love and getting laid, the typical rock stuff. So it was fresh. And there’s a very positive sound to that song as well. There’s a life to it.
Alex: We still had a couple of long things for Permanent Waves. There was Natural Science, a very ambitious song, and Jacob’s Ladder. But we also had The Spirit Of Radio, Freewill and Entre Nous - shorter, punchier songs ... We felt that we’d really achieved something with that record. The songs were shorter, but still challenging for us as musicians ... The big thing about Permanent Waves was that the band changed - we moved forward. In that sense, it was really a big record for us.
Neil: The song itself, musically, is switching between radio stations, with a reggae section at the end, the second verse is new waves ... It’s about nineteen-eighty that I really start to like our music like a fan. Before that there’s stuff I like in an affectionate way, because we were brave, but as far as achievement I really think we started to bring it together a bit with Permanent Waves… - Louder Classic Rock

My opinion has been that this one song better represents them more than any other they've done. It encompasses all the traits they show in their music. It's energetic, tight, complex time signatures, driving rhythms, great musicianship, switch-ups, thoughtful lyrics, and it's quirky. It's everything great about them condensed into one radio-friendly song.

  • @jeffreyes6236

Yes, this song is a masterpiece! It is the song that first made me a fan of Rush way back in the day. These guys are such talented musicians and songwriters and their lyrics are always meaningful. I don't think you have reviewed it yet, so I would recommend "Closer to the Heart" by Rush. "Free Will" is another classic of theirs that has a lot of change-ups during the course of its 4 minutes. If you want to check out something different that I think is really dope, check out "Superman is Dead" by Our Lady Peace. I think you would also get a kick out of "Institutionalized" by Suicidal Tendencies. It's not as harsh as you might assume from the name of the song and group, and the video is really good. Keep reviewing my brother!!!

Bro, imagine a time when only a transistor radio had that window to Music for young people. Our parents had record players but it was their stuff. Like Sinatra. But Rock n Roll or Motown was only on the radio. 1 station everyone listened to in Dc Suburbs. WPGC .No 8tracks or cassettes back then. It was magic to turn it on 1st thing and start draing batteries and moving around to get a good signal. The radio. So cool back then. It meant everything.

I've been a Rush fan since the release of Fly by Night (dates me!) Now I'd love to see you do a reaction to someone who Alex Lifeson greatly admired-both as a musician and as a man, the legendary Rory Gallagher. Rory was a multi-instrumentalist but was best known for his blues rock guitar skills rivaling Clapton and Page. Since you're checking our albums, try taking a listen to "Fuel to the Fire" from his album Photo Finish for a sample of his work. Thanks!

Neil wrote this song as a tribute to all that was great about radio when he was young, but also how the producers & salesman tried to get them to write just short, $$$ making songs for radio only. They obviously did a few, but went their own way. BTW, this video was done as a tribute to Neil after he passed. As always, RIP to the "The Professor".
