The band is Rush. The song is called "Tom Sawyer" and is named after the character in the classic novel by Mark Twain. The "piano" is actually a synthesizer. And the song is from 1981, making it 42 years old (not 10). They're definitely one of the most talented musical trios in history, all masters at their instruments. The drummer, Neil Peart, also wrote their lyrics. The singer also plays bass and keyboards, and sometimes does all three at one time with the help of foot pedals (which is what you see him stepping on sometimes). And Alex Lifeson is amazing on guitar.
I absolutely LOVE seeing all these young folks experiencing the awesome music that I’ve been loving since I was a kid - born in 73 - and it’s all that much better when they truly enjoy and appreciate it! Great reaction! ❤️
He is the drummer’s drummer!! They ALL name Neil as the best ever. Only those that have not ever heard him don’t name him as the best… OR they just flat don’t understand the complexity and sheer talent it takes to play like that!
Although Van Halen is my fave band and to me the greatest I totally agree with what you said. Growing up in the 80s I'd have fought tooth n nail to defend "VH is the best" and to me they are. But....I grew up really looking into Rush more and Although I love My VH more I have no problem if everyone says Rush is the best. Literally each member is in the Top 10 of their craft. Really no other band save Led Zeppelin??? Could make that case.
I need this dude in my life. He’s hilarious- and keepin’ it real. He has no idea who the f Rush is- and that makes his reaction genuine. It also cracks me up that that he’s trying to understand the meaning of the song. You need to be on a WHOLE other level to understand Rush’s lyrics.
The foot pedals are basically a synthesizer keyboard you play with your feet. Most church organs have foot pedals in addition to the keys so you can play bass notes with your feet and a melody with your hands. It’s the same concept here - he can play notes with his feet and hands at the same time, and because they are synths, you can make them sound like any instrument or sound effect you want. When they play live, Geddy will often play bass guitar while playing synth parts with his feet, and he does that while singing! Unbelievable talent in this band. Loved your reaction!
Answer to your question call: he’s playing Taurus pedals, which creates like a string sound, or a bass sound. He plays that with his feet so that he can keep playing the bass guitar and singing, and using the keyboard that he plays all the sounds on. they’re wearing headphones because they actually filmed this while they were recording some of those parts so you’re watching the performance as it was being recorded or lip-synched, but they’re using the headphones for playback so they can hear and play along with the music that they just recorded.
"Tom Sawyer" came about during a summer rehearsal vacation that Rush spent at Ronnie Hawkins' farm outside Toronto. Peart was presented with a poem by Dubois named "Louis the Lawyer" (often incorrectly cited as "Louis the Warrior")[3] that he modified and expanded. Lee and Lifeson then helped set the poem to music. The "growling" synthesizer sound heard in the song came from Lee experimenting with his Oberheim OB-X.[4][5] For "Tom Sawyer",
Hey Brian. I hear Ronnie had a place on Mississauga Rd just north of Burnanthorpe Rd beside Mullet Cr. in the mid '80's. Couldn't see it from the road. Also remember seeing Lee in the early '70's playing at Earl Haig HS before teaming up with Leeson and Peart. His voice was so unusual then i thought there would be no way he could ever make it. Shows you what I know
I was 16 years old when this was released. I'm now 59 yrs old. Yes, I hate being so old. But I love seeing young people be blown away by Rush. Kids who have grown up listening to rap and hiphop have never heard anything like Rush. You have to listen to their masterpiece "2112". It is super dramatic and heart wrenching. Other songs I would recommend "Working Man" "Bastile Day" "Limelight" "Hemispheres" and "Closer to the Heart"
Tuned in to your ren reactions brother and love your work. Am an old school rock fan and Rush are possibly the best 3 musicians ever to be in the one band. Great reaction great song and keep on your journey of musical discovery. Respect from Glasgow Scotland 🙏👍😎
1st the BAND is called RUSH - the SONG is called is called TOM SAWYER - they recorded the video in the STUDIO - the SINGER is GEDDY LEE as well as the BASSIST - He is stepping on MOOG TAURUS PEDALS that are another "Instrument"
Fun fact: the drummer, Neil Peart, wrote most of the lyrics for their songs. Also, organs have foot pedals as well as the regular keys played with the hands. Excellent question. Love your reaction!
He joined the band with their second album, _Fly By Night,_ on which he wrote over half the songs (including the title track). Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee contributed to the songs on _Caress of Steel,_ and on _2112_ they wrote one song each - but after that all the lyrics were written by Neil and they all collaborated on the music.
Tom sawyer, in American literature, was a boy on the Mississippi R during the 1800s. He became a symbol of rugged individualism and the story of a boy becoming a man.
The band's name is Rush and the song is Tom Sawyer. Rush are three master musicians from Toronto, Canada. They had a 45 year career. Geddy Lee Vocals, Bass and Keyboards Alex Lifeson guitar, mandola and later keyboards. Neil Peart drums, percussion and main lyrist Unfortunately Neil Peart passed from brain cancer in January of 2020. He is considered one of the best drummers in rock. To answer your questions. The instrument Geddy Lee is playing is synthesizer and the pedals are taurus pedals which allows him to play both the bass and the synth at the same time. This was filmed at Le Studio in Morin Heights, Quebec , Canada. The reason they are wearing headphones is because they are recording the song at the same time. Hope that helps. Cheers 🇨🇦
Great reaction to RUSH. The song is Tom Sawyer from the album moving pictures of the 1981 . This three master musician are from Canadá and they are: Geddy Lee plays bass, bass pedal, synth, pedal synth, guitars and vocals. Alex Lifeson plays all guitars and pedal synth, pedal bass. Neil Peart plays drums and percusion also wrote the lyrics. But becarefull don't listen Mush Rush you will turn a fan.
Tom Sawyer was a young character in a classic Mark Twain novel. He was a character that represented the freedom of a young man in rural 19th century America, this song is about a modern day Tom Sawyer
Tom Sawyer is a book, ( famous world wide ) written by the very famous American author Mark Twain. Rush’s lead singer is Geddy Lee , bass and keyboards…..Alex Lifeson, guitar, and Neil Peart, drummer and lyrics. R.I.P. Professor. They are an iconic Canadian band who performed together for over 40 years. Try their “ Spirit of Radio “ next.
The band is Rush. The song is Tom Sawyer. Have ever read the book Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. Read it. I was 20 almost 21 when this album Rush Moving Pictures was released in 1981. Try the song Xanadu(pronounced Zanadu) from the live album Exit...Stage Left 1981 The video is on youtube. Rush is one of the greatest bands ot all time. Many think the greatest. Check out The Spirit of Radio and Subdivisions also.
I am seriously shocked you haven't heard this. No probs though. Rush was one of the greatest bands of the 70s and 80s. Tom Sawyer is the song Rush is the band lol. It I had a couple of friends who were professional wrestlers that used this for their intro into the ring. Great Reaction ❤
My favorite band... First live rock show in my life at 15 was Rush the Permanent Waves tour... I had never heard of them before that night... BIG IMPRESSION for sure!
The song is a masterpiece. The tempo changes to seamlessly that music scholars scratch their heads and say 'wtf??'. Actually the lead singers name is Geddy Lee (also, keys and bass), Alex Lifeson (guitar), and the LEGENDARY NEIL PEART (Drums and cocaine). The band is RUSH. Legend has it that the words mean nothing if you're sober. If you're trippin balls it makes perfect sense. Check other RUSH songs, YYZ is also very weird and fun at the same time. Its an instrumental but you dont miss having lyrics. For better eye candy check out a cover of YYZ by Anna Sentina (bro!!). BTW, sadly Neil Peart passed away a few years ago. RIP Neil, you are missed every day!
The singer, Geddy Lee, plays the keyboard and bass and sometimes does all three at the same time. The foot work is a keyboard. All of the band members have other duties at times. Foot work on keys or percussion triggers for effects. They make music that sounds like 6 people playing.
*SUBSCRIBED!!* Welcome to the RUSH 🐇 hole !! You ain't seen NOTHING YET, son!! LOVE seeing youngin's getting introduced to the music that shaped us old farts' lives!! #BetterBuckleUp !!
You are going to love this song I absolutely love this group is freaking amazing and I saw them live back in the '80s by the way that just tells my age amazing group
These 3 musicians are of a generation that will NEVER be equalled. They are individually virtuosic. Great song, timeless R.I.P Professor Neil Peart. Check out the live version of Xanadu, from the 1981 Album..Exit,stage left. It will blow your mind.
Great reaction, my man. Glad you enjoyed it. What's he stepping on? Geddy's stepping on bass pedals that allow him to play the bass notes while his hands are playing the synth lines.
Fun fact Rush used to record in my hometown of Thornhill. My brother and i were kids playing at the park near thr factories and we heard amazing sounds coming out of the buildimg. We climbed on the garbage dumpster to get a look in the window of the recording studio.Rush saw us and they rocked on.We stayed watching and listening to them record. They came out and gave us guitar picks and Neil gave us drum sticks. They spent time talking with us about music it was Epic😂❤Plus ive seen them twice the highlight is Neils drum solo which you should check out❤
There are couple types of foot pedals. Rush uses Taurus Pedals to play keyboard parts, also the peddles are used to sustain notes, increase/decrease volume, and switch sounds
this was the recording studio. so they do instruments and vocals usually separate then mix them. Rush did some things at the same time. and Geddy, lead singer, played bass, keyboards and sang all at the same time. Alex, lead guitarist, also did various pedals and backing vocals as well. Neil , drummer, was the main lyricist after their first album which took them to a whole new level. Not to mention how they change time signatures and are flawless at it. 40+ years of making music you are just scratching the surface. go down the rabbit hole. you won't be disappointed. Great job. keep it up
Great reaction. I saw them live in concert in Philly in 1982; awesome musicians. I wish you could have been there with me and my friends; you would have been amazed!
When recording in a studio, musicians wear earphones to hear the music they're playing through the mic'd sound system. The sound engineer can also speak to the musicians from the booth. All musicians wear in ear monitors when playing live so they can hear the music they're playing properly. A drummer may have a click track (metronome) playing as well to keep time more accurately.
The earphones are used during the recording of a song. The pedals are used to elongate or shorten the notes being played on the keyboard or they are used to change the sound playing from the keyboard. This is the band Rush singing Tom Sawyer.
Neil Peart, aka "The Professor", your favorite drummers favorite drummer, and he wrote most of the lyrics for all their songs, check out a 2004 drum solo n Germany he did, you won't look at drumming the same ever again. Alex Lifeson is a highly underrated guitarist and Geddy Lee on vocals and keyboard AND bass, sometimes at the same time via a special foot pedal. As for what songs, to many to list but a short list would be "Limelight" "Subdivisions" "2112" "Free Will" "Closer To The Heart" "Red Barchetta" "Fly By Night" and maybe THE greatest song they did and a true testament to their talent and raw energy "The Spirit Of Radio"
I love your reactions!!! I get such fun watching you and how you get surprised and excited as you watch. Keep doing these reactions. Rush is a Canadian band and they make me proud to say that I am Canadian and we have some amazing artists up here. I had the pleasure of seeing these guys 3 or 4 times live. Excellent concerts every single one of them. Sadly the drummer, Neil Peart passed away recently so Rush is finished but their incredible music lives on and on. Do yourself a huge favour and please check out the song 2112. I promise you you will not be let down. It is , in my opinion one of the best pieces they did. I listen to it and I literally drift off on a journey. Keep up with your reactions. You are making this Canadian girl happy. PS...where was home for you. You said you miss the snow.
Nice! Hello from Brasil! From Rush I also recommend the live videos of "Xanadu", "Red Barchetta" and "Frewill (the instrumental part is CRAZY!!!)" from the show "Exit: Stage Left". And also the official video for "Subdivisions ! Oh, an the live version of "YYZ" from the show "Rush in Rio"!
I first saw them in concert in the late 70's, one of my favorite bands. The group is "Rush" and the song is "Tom Sawyer" The thing that you described as a piano is generally referred to as a keyboard or Synthesizer. The pedals are "Moog Taurus pedals" for bass effects. There are only 3 guys in this band so they try to keep everything real with their songs, they implement many instruments to recreate a very full sound for just a trio. Glad you liked it.
You just found the best band ever... Three virtuoso guys with a genius like Neil Peart drumming and writing Lyrics that are POETRY and full of knowledge and smart observations... Rush has so many great songs (count by the dozens), some MASTERPIECES... Some are epic long stories (with great teachings). Check: Spirit of Radio, Freewill, Limelight, Natural Science, YYZ (live in Rio) Big Money and epics like XANADU (exit Stage Left LIVE) or 2112 (with story)... Rush is another level..Love when younger generations discover RUSH and enjoy it... Rush Fans know... After 3 songs you'll know what we mean!... Good luck bro!
Tom Sawyer was a name of a book by Mark Twain Mark Twain was a political humorist and his books seem like they're for kids but they were really for adults he wrote back in the 1800s his real name was Samuel Clemens Great reaction rock on
Soooooo many more jams!! Live version of Xanadu (pronounced Zan-a-do), Spirit of Radio live or studio..there’s a 20 min song that’s whole 1st side of an album called 2112 (Twenty One Twelve). I’m an old man who lived thru it and one THE most talented bands of ALL time! 3 Fkn guys make it sound like 12. Love ur stuff keep it goin
This song came out in 1981 and as awesome as it is its just a typical Rush tune, they literally have dozens and dozens of songs just as good or even better. The holy trinity, music for musicians, they influenced so many bands that came after them. Check out Xanadu from exit stage left or La Villa Strangiato if you want to see them really show off. 😊
That’s a great catch how the instrumental line on the keyboards was picked up by the guitar going into the solo. And if you listen again, the bass guitar takes it over next as the guitar moves into the solo. It’s a cool musical device - and a good ear to catch it your first time through. I’d suggest the song Freewill next if you want to hear another instrumental “guitar solo” that’s more of a 3-way shred-fest. Cheers!
The Drummer, Neil Peart, was WIDLEY considered the best that has ever lived. This song/performance wasn't 10 years ago, more like 35 years. The name of the song is "Tom Sawyer" the name of the Group is Rush.
Man, these guys have 45 or 50 gold & platinum albums on the wall. I lost count lol! Just incredible! Do yourself a favor and check out the live performances , esp the drum solo called “The Rythm Method “. All of the albums are worth listening to. Neil Peart was the one who wrote most of the songs. They called him “The Professor “! R. I. P. Neil Peart
+1 sub. You get Rush. Keep it up, there is so much more. The song is Tom Sawyer, the band is Rush. Try to stay safe in the USA mate, we see whats happening, even as far away as Auatralia. You are not alone!!
The headphones, called monitors, are to hear your instrument/voice. It is impossible to perform in tune if you cant hear yourself. Listen to partial deaf people speak, its the same for musicians who cant hear themselves over the instruments etc.
The song is about a man named Tom Sawyer who takes in his worldly experiences through the eyes of a non-conforming, free spirit. The pedals Geddy is using are bass pedals because he also plays the bass for the band.
I think they are referring to if ...Tom Sawyer lived in today’s world ( back in 1981) today’s Tom Sawyer his mind is not for rent etc... at least that’s how I read it.
If you loved that keyboard work, you'll love the action in Snarky Puppy Lingus. Amazing Jazz Fusion song contain truly spectacular band members, each in their own right. Btw, the singer was the keyboardist too, I think. He sings ahead of time to a click maybe and then fills in for keyboards while others are playing their parts.
"No his mind is not for rent To any God or government Always hopeful yet discontent He knows changes aren't permanent But change is" It's all about free thinking and thinking for yourself ✌️💛🤘
Shon is 20 years old guys.. he says he’s been recommended to these songs, hearing them for the 1st time.. all these comments about how he’s got everything wrong from the pronunciation of “Tom Sawyer” and him not wearing a shirt.. c’mon.. grow the hell up! Let him run his channel..what’s the big deal? I grew up with 3 brothers in the 70’s and they didn’t wear t-shirts when they were in their own rooms.. at least he don’t have man-boobs!! How many of you guys watching these videos in your mama’s basement can say you don’t have that problem? 😂 Getting back to the subject at hand! I’m so happy to see this younger generation even taking an interest on the music that I grew up with. Born in 1968, the 70’s & 80’s music had a definite influence in my life and this trio, Rush, even inspired my brother to become the drummer he is today.. nowhere close to Neil Peart, but that was his big influence.. I heard Rush (and the like) music almost daily in our home growing up, so it gets inside your soul.. One of Neil’s lifetime influencer’s was Buddy Rich, and even went back to learn drumming to revamp his technique.. Neil is sorely missed by a lot of his longtime fans.. RIP Neil Peart..

Tom Sawyer is a famous book by Mark Twain. This band was amazing
this was the recording studio. so they do instruments and vocals usually separate then mix them.
Although Neil only tried a click track once. He said it kept throwing his rhythm off.
@@DeaconBlues117 There is probably no available click track for Neil's time signature changes..lol
One of the greatest Canadian bands
The headphones allow him to hear his voice in real time mixed with the prerecorded instrumental track, while he's singing it.
Man the 70’a and 80’s were the pinnacle for rock. The stuff just kept coming.
As for what songs, to many to list but a short list would be "Limelight" "Subdivisions" "2112" "Free Will" "Closer To The Heart" "Red Barchetta" "Fly By Night" and maybe THE greatest song they did and a true testament to their talent and raw energy
"The Spirit Of Radio"
The hardest trio of all time
Oh to hear RUSH for the first time and to have no idea the depth of the ocean you're in. Enjoy your journey my friend!
" Rush" is the band the song is about the book Tom Sawyer written by Mark Twain
Drummer is the lyrics writer, pure poetry.
Thanks for your reaction!!!❤❤❤❤
RIP Professor. 😢
Must talented drummer ever!!!!!
I started my drumming career because of this song back in nineteen eighty two
You just found the best band ever...
Def Leppard "Pour some Sugar in me" One armed drummer kicks ass!
Tom Sawyer was a name of a book by Mark Twain Mark Twain was a political humorist and his books seem like they're for kids but they were really for adults he wrote back in the 1800s his real name was Samuel Clemens Great reaction rock on
My god, man, punctuation!
Saw them live
I saw them live 36 times. 1st time was in 1976
Soooooo many more jams!!
Tom Swayer get us to paint that fence and we liked it!
Another great Canadian Band, BTO, live version of "You Ain't seen Nothing Yet!"
Try Lynyard Skynyrd Simple Man!!! Great song about a mothers message to her son!!! Will not disappoint!
Welcome brother. Enjoy the rabbit hole.
THREE guys made this!!!
That's Neil Pert, God of the drums.
🥰 Hoping for more Rush! 😃🐰
3 dudes.... T H R E E dudes. Nothing else needs to be said.
The drummer is the GOAT 🐐
They are wearing the headphones because this video was done when they were recording the song. This was taken in the recording studio.
Rush is often referred to as "Your favorite band's favorite band."
I grew up with Rush. From Hemispheres onward I was a nut. 6 years old and loving them since 1979
You also need to react to Japanese funk band "CASIOPEA." They too smooth.
The song was written about Tom Sawyer the kid made famous in the Mark Twain novel, you should read it! The adventures of Tom Sawyer.
Neil peart on drums....best drummer in the world till the day he died. RIP
"No his mind is not for rent
To any God or government
Always hopeful yet discontent
He knows changes aren't permanent
But change is"
It's all about free thinking and thinking for yourself ✌️💛🤘
Canadian greatness! 🇨🇦🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🥇🥇👍👋💖
Getting back to the subject at hand!
