Thank you very much for taking the time to explain the difference between the 15-600mm C lens and the S lens. You have made it much easier for me to chose the next lens Sigma 150-600mm lens I buy. I do look after mine a little better so the C is the lens for me, thank you again.
Really glad I found this. I'm a happy Canon DSLR user (1DX Mk III, 7D Mk II, 20D, and an old 300D). I just picked up a Canon 100-400, but since I was hoping to get a 500mm at some point. I'm beginning to think the Sigma 100-600 Contemporary might be a good choice.
On that subject: Years ago I heard in the news that a Danish company was selling sand in the Sahara desert! (It was special sand for filters, of course - not your standard beach variety, but I thought it was funny anyway).
thanks for a great video. Begining the search for a lens to take shots of Surfers around 100 yards offshore and Sigma seems to be the right one for budget
As usual amazing video full of details and most important with a few tips for us beginners. Thank you so much and I wish you could do some workshops here in Europe maybe even in Romania where I live. I love the way you explain about each type of photography and it's so easy to understand. Anyway just wanted to let you know that I really appreciate your advice and I watched your videos about macro photography and birds photography and learnt a lot. Cant wait for more.
I just purchased the 150-600 C and paired it with my Canon T6. It is an unlikely pairing, but it works very well. This is indeed a great lens for wildlife.
Thanks! I'm getting one to go with a Nikon D5600 and gimbal mount. I've gotten good results with smaller lenses, but this longer lens will give me more reach for wildlife. Back in the 1980s, I was a wedding and portrait photographer. You're definitely right in that zooms vs. prime lenses weren't on the same level back then.
Tamron g1 or g2? I would love to get this lens. How is autofocus tracking for birds in flight? Many people complain Tamron 150-600 g1 and g2 autofocus freeze! Did u experience such problem?
Just got my 150-600 cont. yesterday, having a bit of an issue with clarity, but it may be I was not shooting fast enough shutter speed. Going to try it out again later today when the light is better.
I was reading a review that this lens performs poorly from 500mm and higher. It effects sharpness a lot. So I really don't know anymore to buy this or not.
Roman I pre ordered my 150/600 5 months prior to the release and was one of the first to have one in our area for 500 miles lmao I own nearly all sigma glass ide trade the other 2 non sigma but haven’t found their equal yet so I’m stuck with um lol thanks I watched the vid many years ago and I’m like you they are built to take a dirty beating to say the least with several wildlife awards and achievement I’m my 5 years as a enthusiast I’m proud to say sigma has stood the test of time and quality unsurpassed
Man... I love listening to you! In Japan and the sigma 100-400 just came out... can´t afford the canon 100-400 or the sigma sport... so it comes down to Sigma 100-400, 150-600 C or the Tamron 150-600 G2... and Input... love birding but traveling a lot and also wanna shoot bigger animals in backcountry canada... should I go for a 150-600?
No substitute for reach in wildlife photography so only if can't handle the weight of the contemporary would I go for the 100-400 as it is super light.
That is to the point... they are nearly the same price now... but a few years of difference in technology. Tamron just came out with the 150-600 g2, which seems lighter than the sigma sport and also quite a bit cheaper, but still newer than the 150-600 C and yet better reach than the 100-400C from sigma... did I just answer my own Question?
newer.....doesn't mean better :) I have plenty of images online and elsewhere with the C......haven't seen any with the other lens that are impressive at 600mm.....why? A few reviews by others also say....newer outside....same old inside.
Hi Roman, I took your class at Festival of the Cranes in 2016 and your video convinced me to get the 150-600 contemporary. I was wondering if this lens can take the TC-2001 or is the TC-1401 the only one it can take? This is for my Canon 70D. OR, can I use a Canon teleconverter and if so, which one do you recommend? Your input is greatly appreciated. I LOVED YOUR CLASS and probably will sign up again with you this year if you are coming back to NM.
I do think the lens will AF with the TC 1401 on that body.....although I would drop the repair/tech dept an email...just to make sure. No AF with the 2x. It depends on which version of the Canon 1.4x TC you have....although no guarantee even with the newest one.
Hello Mr. Kurywezak: I watched your video and I enjoyed the information that you presented. I have a question regarding what the differences between the 150-600 contemporary and Sigma's discontinued 150-500 are? I am asking because I have read conflicting Internet reports from people who say the new 150-600 won't work with the Nikon D3300 or the D300 while others say they will work but the autofocus will be a quite slow for action shots. Some people think the discontinued 150-500 would be a better choice for the D700. Thanks for the help! Regards, Duane
An important omission is that the sigma 2X teleconverter doesn't allow autofocus with both Sigma 150-600mm lenses. However this the same with the similar Tamron 150-600mm lenses and Tamron X2 teleconverters. Canon doesn't offer a 150-600mm lens or something similar to it. Nikon offers the AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR but it is quite old 2005 and autofocus with 2X teleconverter is impossible too.
Great video Roman and my question is in your opinion is a Sigma 1x4 teleconverter useful on a nikon D5500 with the Sigma Contemporary lens seeing it is a cropped sensor camera
Not sure with that combination. I would email Sigma tech or repair and ask them to get exact answer. It will autofocus on my Canon 7D ll crop body.....but realize that at effectively over 1,300mm.....not an easy task to track birds in flight.....but works well on stationary subjects.
What happens when you pour all that sand in your camera bag? Also noticed most of his pics were out of focus, or at lest focused on the wrong part of the bird.@@RomanKurywczak
@@RC-nj1by A lens hood attached to a lens. It was like half a cup of sand that poured out. No way that wasn't touching the glass. I had to rewatch the video its been 4 years.
I'm thinking of getting the Contemporary to pair up with the GH5. 2x crop pushes this too 1200mm and the 0.71 adapter puts the speed at that range at f4.4. In body stabilization is a game changer and I've tested it with the cheap Cannon 75-300. That cheap lens I can shoot in dusk at 1/30 of a second to keep exposure. Moving subjects are what they are, but non moving subjects are perfect. And I still think I can hand hold at 600mm equiv at lower shutter speeds if I need to. :)
Wauw, beautiful pictures and a good video. I bought the contemporary yesterday. Can you tell me if you are using 1 focuspoint or more with the flying birds above the water (in AF-mode)? Greatings from Holland
Thanks for the vid. I just purchased the contemporary for my canon rebel t6i. I knew it would be perfect because it's got great range, seems to be easy to travel with, and the price is just phenomenal. If you have any tips let me know!!!
Hello, just got the contemporary and need to customize w/the sigma dock. Seems like a lot of work but from what I understand, completely worth it. Did you use the dock to customize the lenses you are using. Thank you😊
Roman: Wonderful presentation thorough and well articulated. I saw this presentation back in 2016 shortly after your posted. I have since that time been waiting for Sigma to produce a mount that will work on my Sony Alpha cameras that do NOT require a converter. How much longer do you think I'll have to wait for a lens to be released that will connect to my A/9 and A7R-III w/o a converter? Patiently waiting.....hope you can provide some optimistic insight to a release estimate.
Roman Kurywczak great video :) which camera did you use ?. thinking of buying the Sigma Contemporary, I own a Nikon D7200 and want to shoot mainly Birds in flight/Aircraft. Can you recommend settings for fast burst shooting. I'm on a beginner learning curve :)
I think the contemporary would work well on that body although I am not familiar with all Nikon models. In this video I think I used a Canon 1D mark lll and I now use the Canon 1Dx and the Canon 7D ll. I really like the contemporary on a DX body for a lightweight package.
I'm looking at buying the sport version for my 6D for use at airshows etc. I'm a big lad and i'm reasonably strong (I work in a building warehouse so repetitive lifting isn't new,) but i'm going to want to hand hold this for 8 hours. Would you recommend this? My alternative was the 50-500 OS but Flickr and Pixel Peeper are showing me the quality of this 150-600 is wonderous, and that push/pull function will come in handy.
Excellent video, sir! Thank you very much for posting it! I just purchased the contemporary lens for a Canon body, and had a question for you. First off, I am fairly new to the world of photography and am trying to learn all about the different settings and such. My question is, when I use the 150-600mm contemporary lens with my Canon 1300d camera, i keep the lens zoomed out to the 150mm mode and try to focus on an object (using the autofocus feature) that is approximately 20 feet away. The automatic focus feature brings the object into focus briefly and then blurs it, and then gives me the green "ready-to-shoot" square, even though the object in my viewfinder is extremely blurry! Is there something I am overlooking, or is it possibly a defective lens? This was indoors with good lighting. So far I have not had any issues with it focusing outdoors on objects that are at least 40 feet or further away. Thanks for any help!
I keep it in the middle.....around 300....that way with a 1/2 twist I can zoom in or out. Do realize that this takes lots of practice to master......but it is much easier to track at wider focal lengths and then zoom in....bump the focus (I use top button). The closer and faster the subject....the more difficult to keep the focus. If you pan of zoom at the same speed of your subject....this will increase your odds of keeping focus.
i love your videos and your still photography. I have a Sony A6000. mirrorless camera that came with a 55-210 lens. I would like to upgrade but don't see a lot of options for this camera. I'm so intrigued by the Sport lens above but doesn't look like it will work with the Sony?An thoughts?
This tripod mount makes it seem like you're holding a machine gun. In a way, that's actually true. I'd literally spend an extra 5 grand in my currency to get the 60-600 sport just to have a reason to feel like I'm a gun shooter 😂
+Roman Kurywczak - I've been researching the 50-500 vs the 150-600C. I'm curious about the sample images. They all seem a tad dark. Is that SOOC or was it processed that way?
is it not advised to use 2x magnifiers with these lens while hand held? i have not used tele lens till now. I would really appreciate any response to my question...
You can use our new TC-2001 but it will not auto focus. It will auto focus on some bodies with the TC-1401. The 2x magnifier is a lot of reach and difficult to use because even the slightest movement and you will lose your subject. It can be done.....but difficult.

Hi Roman, What can I say? Nothing but admiration with the coined-in term "Roman proof" humour. Love concise data. Q 1.The Sigma Sports lens "tripod support" is very large & cannot be put on a standard tripod head. It measures, 120.20LX42.42WX12.18D mm. Please, you could recommend an ideal tripod head to support the lens, Canon 5D MK II with a dual battery grip? Q2. Is it possible to buy only a tripod head from an economy range? Jaw openings are 42.42mm X 12.18mm? Kind regards.
You need to add an Arca swiss style foot plate of about 150mm or longer from Induro or swap the foot out like I did with this: www.sigmaphoto.com/tripod-collar-ts-81 expensive yes, but makes a great carry handle too!
Thank you very much Roman, solved the issue with an Arca swiss style foot yesterday. You are brilliant and thanks for the link. Please post more Videos. Would it be possible to see Bisons, Bears and Mountain Lions, please? Take care. Best of luck
Hi Roman, I bought 150-600 sport and thinking to buy sigma 1.4 teleconverter I have Nikon D4, please advise me if I buy or not because I afraid to lost sharpen of photo and also focus speed thank you
Hey Roman, I have the 150-600 mm sport and love the quality of the lens. I shoot with a Nikon D500 and have not been able to get a sharp picture. They are pretty good, but not really sharp. I have used the dock to adjust the focus on all 16 settings several times with little success and sharpness. The lens has gone back to Sigma and they assure me that the lens is as it should be. I am in southern Ontario, Canada and have been enjoying many owls and other raptors but very frustrated with the lack of quality shots. I shoot on a tripod and in some cases use a timed release to eliminate all camera shake. Suggestions?
I have to ask - yes, you used shutter of 1/2000 but could you please let us know the rest of the settings - I have the sport but my images are never as sharp as you are showing there (distance is a factor of course, but once in a while I do get close) - I use it with the Canon 7D MK II
Doug Edwards I also read above that these lenses really need calibrating to get top quality pictures, otherwise the images out the box are poor in comparison.
Sanu Don I use both the 5DIII and the 7DII, I keep the sport on the 7DII because you get that crop factor but I have a Canon f4 IS 70-200 on the 5DIII. Then I also put the 100 f2.8 macro on the 5DIII because it allows more light. Thank you Roman, I totally agree about the noise over 800 ISO, for some reason a lot of people seem to deny its existence. That doesn't stop me using 1200 though to get a 1/2000 for a bird in flight, it's not to such an extent it can't be treated post.
roman will it work with the canon t4i camera. The c model. In some reviews that i am reading the tamron 150-600mm comes out a little ahead of the sigma in autofocus. Why is the sigma c better than the tamron. Seems like the sigma dock is a complicated device to use and is not for the beginner. I don"t see any videos on y tube as how to calibrate the lens using the dock? Thanks! Have you calibrated your lense.
Roman! Pretty good review...But, and BIG BUT... seriously, you glossed over the true difference between them for people who cant afford both! You said the focus is almost identical, focus locking, almost same, and other areas......well, can you talk about the "rub" between those aspects so we can see if the weight is worth carrying??
+UnknownHandle UnknownHandle only you can truly answer that as I hand hold both but maybe this long term update will help: blog.sigmaphoto.com/2015/sigma-150-600mm-sport-and-contemporary-long-term-use-update/ I still recommend you go put one in your hands in the store.
Thanks, just read it. I wish I could afford both, but this style of shoot is strictly pleasure and need only one. I have had the SPort for a little over a week, and love it, but its heavy. I might swap out for the C if the optics are equal.
i have it on my d810 and it is my working horse the 150-600mm S is fast and sharp conpared to my friend 600mm f4 prime i dont notice 11.000 dollars in sharpnes differfence it was sharper but not by much
Thank you. This was helpful. I am getting a Nikon D500 and 150-600 Sig. Sport lens that is being delivered this week. I am concerned about the 6 pound weight issue and did just buy a side mount gimbal for my tripod for this lens. I live in the PNW which is why the sport model was recommended with our weather. I am getting into bird and wildlife photography and hear you say the Contem. and Sport are "similar" If the weather sealing on the contemporary is decent and I get the appropriate lens cover, do these cameras match up identically or is the sport sharper with better autofocus. Thank you in advance for your input.

This guy could sell fire in hell.
LOL
This fire is a Game Changer. This is not your Dad's fire.
not really a salesman....but I did laugh!!!
lol
Great video. Very helpful in my decision making. Thank you.
Love my Sigma 150-60 Sport. Yes its heavy, but it can take a beating and allows me to shoot through even the worst weather!
i was at Nickerson yesterday... Now I just found this video... Small world...
great video really see the difference with professional pictures
I got the Tamron I really wish I saw this video before I made my purchase.
Tamron g1 or g2? I would love to get this lens. How is autofocus tracking for birds in flight? Many people complain Tamron 150-600 g1 and g2 autofocus freeze! Did u experience such problem?
Thanks for the video. I might buy the sigma contemporary, bcse the price. I think your video has helped me to make up my mind..
Just got my 150-600 cont. yesterday, having a bit of an issue with clarity, but it may be I was not shooting fast enough shutter speed. Going to try it out again later today when the light is better.
Thanks for this video i was confused of these different lenses . Liked your video very much. Your presentation is interesting.
I'll be ordering mine hopefully next week. If it's anything like my 17-50 f2.8 I'll be fine!
I hope it's RUclips, but a lot of those photos are not sharp or in focus.
I saw a lot oversharped in post production lol
Out of focus
Yeah loads out a focus and poor
Great video straight forward and easy to understand how your shoot
I was reading a review that this lens performs poorly from 500mm and higher. It effects sharpness a lot. So I really don't know anymore to buy this or not.
Thanks very helpful love your pictures
Roman I pre ordered my 150/600 5 months prior to the release and was one of the first to have one in our area for 500 miles lmao I own nearly all sigma glass ide trade the other 2 non sigma but haven’t found their equal yet so I’m stuck with um lol thanks I watched the vid many years ago and I’m like you they are built to take a dirty beating to say the least with several wildlife awards and achievement I’m my 5 years as a enthusiast I’m proud to say sigma has stood the test of time and quality unsurpassed
Great video! Just got the lence and i love it! What kind of Canon camera did you use here? I use the 7D
I use my conteporary with Sigma MC-11 on my Sony A6000 and i think its very good! Thanks for youre video. 🙂
A few reviews by others also say....newer outside....same old inside.
awsome answer! Thank you very much for your time!
holy crap!!!!!! HES A SIGMA PRO AND PUTE HIS CAMERA/ LENS BAG IN THE SAND !!!!!!! IMAGINE WHEN WE SEND IN A LENS TO BE REPAIRED !!!!!!!
Hi Roman, I took your class at Festival of the Cranes in 2016 and your
video convinced me to get the 150-600 contemporary. I was wondering if this lens can take the TC-2001 or is the TC-1401 the only one it can take? This is for my Canon 70D. OR, can I use a Canon teleconverter and if so, which one do you recommend?
Your input is greatly appreciated. I LOVED YOUR CLASS and
probably will sign up again with you this year if you are coming back to
NM.
I do think the lens will AF with the TC 1401 on that body.....although I would drop the repair/tech dept an email...just to make sure. No AF with the 2x. It depends on which version of the Canon 1.4x TC you have....although no guarantee even with the newest one.
Sigma, please support A-mount lenses. My A99 II is crying out for your latest state of the art lenses especially the 85mm Art!
I'm going to the zoo today with my new Sigma 150-600 contemporary. I have a bad back so I'm going to use a mono pod. Can't wait to try stout.
Regards,
Duane
I really like your bird photos! Just purchased this lens, and I'm off to capture similar shots :)
Nikon offers the AF-S NIKKOR
200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR but it is quite old 2005 and autofocus with 2X teleconverter is impossible too.
Hi, I'm getting the contemporary ones this Saturday and i can't wait to test them! Btw what tripod and head are you using? Thanks
Watching sand pour out of your lens hood 6:43 when you picked up the sport was SUPER cringe worthy.
You are not the first to say that LOL! The Sport can take it!
What happens when you pour all that sand in your camera bag? Also noticed most of his pics were out of focus, or at lest focused on the wrong part of the bird.@@RomanKurywczak
@@mattgartside7885 1DX makes spray and pray "easy"
It's a lens hood, not a big deal......no point in babying your gear.
@@RC-nj1by A lens hood attached to a lens. It was like half a cup of sand that poured out. No way that wasn't touching the glass. I had to rewatch the video its been 4 years.
where is the location of this video ? great info. thx
i love it my contemporary
Wauw, beautiful pictures and a good video. I bought the contemporary yesterday. Can you tell me if you are using 1 focuspoint or more with the flying birds above the water (in AF-mode)?
Greatings from Holland
Thanks for the vid. I just purchased the contemporary for my canon rebel t6i. I knew it would be perfect because it's got great range, seems to be easy to travel with, and the price is just phenomenal. If you have any tips let me know!!!
Jordan K. Films how is it working?
I really like the contemporary on a DX body for a lightweight package.
designed only for FX cameras?
I'm looking at buying the sport version for my 6D for use at airshows etc. I'm a big lad and i'm reasonably strong (I work in a building warehouse so repetitive lifting isn't new,) but i'm going to want to hand hold this for 8 hours. Would you recommend this? My alternative was the 50-500 OS but Flickr and Pixel Peeper are showing me the quality of this 150-600 is wonderous, and that push/pull function will come in handy.
for 8 hours continuous...probably monopod or small gimbal style head on tripod.
Excellent review!!!
This tripod mount makes it seem like you're holding a machine gun. In a way, that's actually true.
I'd literally spend an extra 5 grand in my currency to get the 60-600 sport just to have a reason to feel like I'm a gun shooter 😂
Well done 👍
+Roman Kurywczak - I've been researching the 50-500 vs the 150-600C. I'm curious about the sample images. They all seem a tad dark. Is that SOOC or was it processed that way?
So do these lenses worth with entry level DSLRs? Like the Canon T7i?
yes
Roman Great review!! i have just bought the sports which converter do you recommend that will auto focus with the canon 7dmk2 thanks
Get the Sigma TC 1401 (1.4x) as I know it autofocuses with that body.
is it not advised to use 2x magnifiers with these lens while hand held? i have not used tele lens till now.
Thank you for your opinion
The 1.4 doesnt allow me to auto focus on the 7d. :-(
Never use teleconverters with apcs sensors, you just got the teleconverter build in.
Hey Roman excellent video I switched from the cannon big prime lens to the sigma 3 to 800 Zoom about 10 years ago and loved it I use it with my Canon 1D s I'm curious did you mention which autofocus pattern you use for bird photography?
when you release this lens Sigma 150-600 DG DN FOR SONY E-MOUNT NATIVE? All your other lens have been updated to DG DN E MOUNT and L mount, but this has been forgotten, please update an release native version.. we love this awesome gem .. please only said us if you work on sony e-mount native version that please!!!
Do you have a basic tutorial about using the various adjustments, including the USB docking feature?
Usually f/8 is more than enough especially when shooting at the longer focal lengths.
Doug Edwards I also read above that these lenses really need calibrating to get top quality pictures, otherwise the images out the box are poor in comparison.
Great video
What camera did you use?
I am using canon 5d mark 3. Which is better for bird photography
It is a bit slow on the frame per second rate but has great image and noise quality. 7D ll has a better FPS rate....but is a bit noisy over ISO 800.
Can i use this on Canon 600D
Thank you so much ! What af you would recommend? Nikon D850,thanks
Okay I can't decide should I get a Tamron or Sigma 150-600mm?
i have it on my d810 and it is my working horse the 150-600mm S is fast and sharp conpared to my friend 600mm f4 prime i dont notice 11.000 dollars in sharpnes differfence it was sharper but not by much
Are there any plans on making this lens for the leica L mount?
Great review, thank you. I just bought the Sport and was wondering what focus setting you would suggest on a Nikon. Continuous 3D.??
Do you Af-finetune it? Its not crisp sharp
your"r good man....!beautiful video
