I’m physically challenged and I’m glad that my parents didn’t put me in one of these asylum when I was born in 1974. I feel sorry for the ones who were put into these places.
@abandonedcentral oh my goodness this is so heart breaking. I have a disability too they told my mom to put me in a instution she didn't listen though thank goodness
I have a rare learning disability (I’m also 24yrs/old), but with the proper help and support and right schools…I went Oklahoma State University and got my BSN and now I’m at UPenn in Philly for my masters and CRNA in nursing. I’m so glad my parents didn’t put me in a place like this and didn’t give up on me. I feel terrible for all these children that fell to the abuse and mistreatment here.
Love to hear that! I'm glad you have supportive parents. I grew up outside of Philly. I used to ride bmx bikes and on my 13th birthday i broke my wrist trying to grind down a railing in UPenn. One birthday I'll never forget. Spent 12 hours in the hospital 😩
That’s exactly correct but back then they honestly didn’t care, and would force most people to put there special needs children into state care facilities because not very many people even understand what to do( including all employed for there knowledge) my son is special needs and im so happy I have the help and resources we do now, because honestly I would rather die then put my child in any place other then home with me!
We actually planned on looking for it after shooting this building but we were behind several hours on time and had another location we wanted to shoot this day so we had to skip it.
Wow. This reminds me of Waverly Hills. Same building shape.❤😢The machine looks like an ECT . at 25:40 i heard someone say " thank you" after you complimented how the paint on the wall.❤
It’s very shocking to learn that this was still being used in 2011! I was in high school it wasn’t that long ago! I naively assumed that these places were of the olden days…I was so ignorant….my heart sunk knowing their were still children in this place being transferred. Why did it take so long??😭
Abandoned Central thanks for sharing this video with me about Abandoned Hospital - They Experimented on Children this was a bad place how they treated them so shamefully and i am glad it is closed for good. and God Bless and thanks again i gave you a tumbs up and shared you out.
I was born with a developmental disability with medium support needs and I have a genetic disease. I mourn everyone that had to be in these horrible places. 😞
wait what ? 2011? they let this shit go on for THAT long ? wow.....breaks my heart for all those children who probably could have had a much better quality of life elsewhere :(
I'll be honest, these places should not have existed whatsoever. I'm glad I was not institutionalized at all. Had I been born in the wrong century I feel like that would have happened. Because I was born in the early 2000s despite having a learning disability. I'm doing fine. I'm glad my parents did not put me in an institution. I feel sorry for the people who I live in these places.
I agree that putting children in places like these is inhumane. But that is human evolution for you. People like us who feel for these children, who care about their welfare and only want to help them would have probably been happy that these places were built back then. Because the alternative prior to these institutions existing was a lot worse. In some places it probably still is. :(
Was this willowbrook state school? I’m blind so can’t read any of the written materials. I saw the documentary that Geraldo did back in 1972, it was unreal the way the residents were treated. The documentary is on RUclips for anyone who wants. What many don’t understand is that segregation of children and adults who dealt with disabilities was the norm prior to 1980.
@@РадославЗоря I know I’m not the original poster of this comment but I am blind so I thought I would answer your question. There are things that are called screen readers, and it is a program that will take all of the text and things on a computer screen and speak them out loud… with these screen readers people like us who may not be able to see the screen very well if at all can navigate around and do just about anything a person with vision can do and that includes filling forms, or even comments on videos or like that there… There’s also another screen access program that some people with residual vision use called a magnifying program… If you have an iOS device, you can look at these types of programs for yourself. The screen reader is called voice overand the screen enlargement program is called zoom… I am dictating this comment on my iPad using the speech to text option and I use a combination of voice over, the screen, reader, and zoom, the screen magnification program…
Shoutout to fellow 80's and 90's kids---- At @14:45,the funny figures on the poles are none other than Secret Squirrel and Morocco Mole!!! I haven't seen them since the mid 90's on Cartoon Network but recognized them in an instant!
The netted in bed shown in one of your last videos is actually a Safety Bed that zipped closed to protect a child or teen from hurting themselves by getting out of bed and falling or hurting themselves or others.
That place is really spooky. Just seeing this video is giving me the creeps! It looks haunted. I'll bet that place is haunted. At night, there are probably ghosts roaming there.
OMG this is sooo cool! I hope they never take it down. In other words, it was a dumping ground for all the undesirables by the kids' parents. It should be standing as a reminder how things were. I never knew Geraldo Rivera in 1972 helped revolutionized the humane treatment of mental patients through his expose. I learn something new everyday.
These places could have been very good but at some point the scum of the medical community decided to take them over and they turned to houses of abuse.😭
Some of the techniques for dealing with people would also seem quite crude compared to today. For example I went to a school for the blind in 2003 and was speaking to a teacher who worked there in the 1970s, he told me that one of the practises was if a student was walking down the hallway and not looking straight ahead they would squeeze the muscles in the neck forcing the student to turn their head to look straight. he told me they eventually stopped doing that when they figured out that the students might be walking down the hall with their head turned sideways because they didn’t have central vision. Something to keep in mind. Not that I support abusing anyone.
This really makes me sick a government state ran facility Treating children as if they are not but something to do test Government and any state Really makes me sick and pissed off
Sad shame but it still goes on today And people don't believe it Adults and children get treated horrible I know someone who has problems I told the spouse they didn't believe me and went and checked on the spouse the person couldn't believe what they seen and how the spouse was treated 😢😢
Amazing movie. I visited the hospital with my bf (I live close by) before it was torn down. What’s left of the kirkbride building is still gorgeous. It’s all “luxury” condos now. Imagine living in one of those though? 😳

I bet a lot of that equipment was expensive there at one time. Now it's just outdated, but still. These poor poor children going through this what is shocking is that it carried through till 2011 absolutely shocking
Totally evil, sinister, diabolical and demonic.
