Compression can be felt like "oh I cannot move anywhere because the walls are coming at me, and I don't feel free to express my emotions"". Depression is the next step: "I hold back all my emotions and lay on a couch all day, because the world sucks...and the world does not want to see my emotions....and when I do express them...they get mad...because they think I have changed, and because the majority of people don't like change....like Donald Trump, it is better to lay on a couch all day and watch RUclips Videos like this one.
Slight correction: the attack is not the amount of time Curtis waits to dampen down the sound after it crosses his threshold. He starts dampening immediately; the attack is just the time it takes him to ramp up to dampening as much as you tell him to (ratio) from nothing.
I cannot watch your videos with a straight face. You take the edge off of how difficult learning producing is. You remind me to not take things TOO seriously :D
The fact that I can actually understand this video now compared to the first time I watched it means KEEP AT IT PEOPLE. Years and years and years is what it takes
so you'd say for the sake of the discussion I have a brother named Ben, a sister named Sally and a mother named Mary and a father named You Suck at Producing?
An analogy for compression that I like is the one about your parents telling you to "Turn that damn music down!". When mum calls out, you take your time reducing the volume and only cut it a bit (slow attack, low ratio) and then turn it back up as soon as her back is turned (fast release), but when you hear dad stomping up the stairs you practically rip the volume knob off (fast attack, high ratio) and wait till he's out of earshot before increasing the volume again (slow release). Does Derek have parents or is he in a secure unit?
Been producing for years and watched loads of tutorials explaining compression but never really understood them to the point that they come to handy for me, except just increasing the volume which is a totally wrong way to use them. Thx to you and your awesome tutorials I finally get it. BIG THX. LOVE YOUR VIDEOS. BEST TEACHER EVER..
I’m looking forward to the day that somebody creates a really good graphics explanation of compression. Trying to follow most technical explanations verbally while trying to follow what I’m seeing visually often just leaves my mind in a muddled mess. Dyslexic much lol
I'm gonna be a nerd about attack time for a minute: the time constants (attack/release) are not how long Curtis "waits before" compressing/releasing. Rather, it's how long the compression/release action *itself* takes. It's essentially how quickly the needle moves.
Pedant Glue compression is a bit of a misleading term. From what I know, a “glue” compressor is usually based on the SSL G-Channel compressor. Its no different than any other type of compression, but it has a certain unique character due to whatever circuitry is going on under the hood.
I think the glue compressor in ableton is modeled after a famous, old analogue compressor from like the 80's, and it has a certain character to it. I've heard people refer to it as smoother and softer than regular digital compressors. A lot of people like to slap this on the entire mix rather than the regular one when they're done mixing, because it kind of "glues" everything together, being a little less harsh than the regular one, from what I've heard.
also, what is the difference with turning the "soft" clip on? whenever i turn it on it seems to give it a buzzing or clipping noise that doesnt sound good
But, you wanna make sure that samples are dynamic, not limited or compressed, otherwise, this can cause the samples to become squashed and sound distorted. So it doesn't matter if each dynamic has a difference volume.
im having problems with this technique. i've tried adjusting the ratio and attack in a bunch of different ways but i still dont have my fathers approval. any advice?
What's the difference between compression and depression? Compression closes the gaps of emptiness while depression opens them.
wish i had thought of this myself

Sir, you really inspire me
thank you sir
Compression is great for many things and as glue for the mix.
But too much can also remove dynamics on instruments
Potion seller, I'm going into battle, and I need only your strongest potions.
you're like ned flanders if he was into music production, thank you for the great content!
I wonder when to use mixing to make it more even and when to use compression.
And you got this compton video up aswell haha good work I understand you now!
Thanks
Awesome video
thanks mike
“Maybe even Sally” I’m in tears 😂
love your explanations. i recomend you to all my friends who "produce."

Have you considered updating some of these older videos with newer versions of Ableton?

Anyone know an example of when you'd *want* a high release time with compression?
when mastering i like to keep the release super high

Hey Underbelly, is it a good idea to put a Curtis on the master? Or is that silly
emotionally congruent
very good tyler
love you thank you so funny and i get it now :)
nice job, good job nice man job nice
mmmm thank ozkar
Why use the glue compressor instead of the 'standard' one?
Isn't Derek your son from the song structure video
0:42 I knew this sounded familiar..... pls, if anyone sees this, check out Shoko Nakagawa - RAY OF LIGHT, its the exact same drum loop goddammit
4:48 "If we turn the release all the way up" *Puts it on auto release*
I'm gonna be a nerd about attack time for a minute: the time constants (attack/release) are not how long Curtis "waits before" compressing/releasing. Rather, it's how long the compression/release action *itself* takes. It's essentially how quickly the needle moves.
He seems like he could have been a character in Jimmy Neutron.
this is great thanks lol
Genious and hillarious analogies 😂🤣 👍👍👍

What is the difference between regular compression, glue compression etc...?

there isn't tbh lol haha
Marketing
its a slower release time that makes things seem more gel together.. like a smearing. but sounds good.
does this guy try to help people or depress them even more?
idek anymore
also, what is the difference with turning the "soft" clip on? whenever i turn it on it seems to give it a buzzing or clipping noise that doesnt sound good
soft clip usually sounds nicer than the hard clip
But, you wanna make sure that samples are dynamic, not limited or compressed, otherwise, this can cause the samples to become squashed and sound distorted.
So it doesn't matter if each dynamic has a difference volume.
im underbelly and i suck at putting the attack to three

I feel stupid but I can't really hear a difference between beat with or without compression, please explain
me neither
you need special headphones or speakers for this
Is it a standard compression?
Why the hell is his ableton blue
What about fl studio?
Wowsers. Didn't know Matt Damon had a RUclips Channel.
Here’s the thing
Do multiband compression
never used it
;"(
I still don't understand release
“This is what nerds call parallel compression” lmfao
"This is what the nerds call parallel compression'"
Underbelly, I think you are a great person. thank you.
thanks man, you too
i love you tutorial , it looks suck everywhere XD
Isn't the release in seconds not milliseconds.
"we're gonna give curtis some VODKA" LMAO
Okay, s'checkit.
YAGA HAHA OGAA MAGAA
"..and this is what nerds call parallel compression." - I laughed so hard. wow
stupid nerds
I'm a official channel fan
im having problems with this technique. i've tried adjusting the ratio and attack in a bunch of different ways but i still dont have my fathers approval. any advice?
What about changing that vodka grip by tweaking the release?
try putting on more makeup
