Fun fact about this, The Geralt we see here is much older but in the first book of short stories Geralt is telling Iola, a young priestess novice about the first time he killed a man. He had just left Kaer Morhen, a young green Witcher and he stumbled upon a group of men attacking a young woman, just like this scene. All full of bravado and hoping for a swooning maiden to thank him for saving her, he killed the men attacking her, nastily. Instead of falling into Geralts arms and showering him with praise, she noisily vomits all over herself and flees from Geralt screaming bloody murder. So here, he tells the young woman to close her eyes instead.

The crimes she is accused of would be consistent with someone starving to death in the wake of a land ravaged by war who is scavenging recent battlefields and potentially holding a grudged against the invading Nilfgards. In the wake of a battle maybe she killed a dying Nilfgard soldier left on the battlefield, looted dead and dying soldiers and perhaps ate some of the dead because there's been no food.

That also aligns with the fact of how brutaly Velen (aka "No man's land") was ravaged by the nilfgaardian invasion.

You're probably right. For the longest time, I thought this was a standard thing being read, like a form letter, something the soldiers are too tired or lazy to change. The 'Lesser Evil' speech is a fun choice here, because the speech itself is a denial by Geralt of precisely what he ends up doing here. The speech and its role in the book is to demonstrate that despite how much Geralt might want to remain neutral, how much easier it might be for him to just abide the evil in the world as all the same and turn away, sometimes (most of the time) he just can't. Even if all evil is evil regardless of degree, you must still choose the lesser evil because that's the reality of the world he lives in, and by extension its a commentary on the world *we* live in.

Isn't that why later on in the Saga people call him 'Butcher from Blaviken'?

The historick backdrop of the Whicher 3 is a war on the continent. Nilfguard (the dominant military force and a reference to Germany) has invaded Temeria and is threattening Redania (reference to Poland).
The no mans lands are the territory of Temeria just conquered by Nilfguard. The soldiers have seen batle with the Temerian man not so long ago and now are responsible for keeping „law and order” on occupied territories. Because they saw their comrads die from the hands of Temerian men they feel contempt and hate towards the local women. The Temerian men either died in batle, went into hiding joining the resistance. Those that become deserteres from both sides become bandits and use the lack of rule of law to their advantage to atack ambush and rob whoever is fooling enough to step into their path. The Temerian men as is the case in every war came from villages. As most of them either died or went into hiding as they cannot come back home there are not enough men to work the fields and defend the vilages that fall prey to soldiers of the invading army and bandits who due to the lack of law or defenders loot, rape and take whatever they want. Deserters and captured enemy soldiers along roads into vilages are hung from nearby treas to send a message to the locals that there is a new power they have to submit to.
Lack of workers and looting conducted by bandits and the invaders causes famine. Hungry women and children go to places where battles happened to find and burry their husbands, brothers and sons hoping that by some miracle they are alive and managed to survive. In most cases they do not find them or find lifeles corpses mutilated by weapons, half eaten by hingry animals and monsters. There is another sinistra reason women and children go to the recent batlefields. They strip corpses of whatever they can sell to get some money often resorting to killing wounded soldiers, and eating their corpse due to hunger. This is what the women are acused of. The women comited the crimes they are acused of butvthey did it due to their desperate situation. The invading soldiers who represent authority technicaly punish criminals for real crimes, but in the proces they show their contempt and hate towards the wives, mothers and doughters of their enemies that killed their comrads in battle. The Whichers were payed to get rid of a monsters that risk around the batlefields with the smell of decomposong flesh. Acording to popular belief (stereotype) Whichers care only about money and have no feelings showing no sympathy. There is a reason Whichers tend to not get involved in disputes and it has to do with the fact that they live much longer lives. Despite looking young Geralt is over 100 years old. His age means he has seen allot of things and has gained wisdom that old people have that can be aquired threw a plethora of life experiances. In the depicted scene Geralt understand that the soldiers and the women are doing or have done bad things, that they are victims of sircumstances and had litle agency to change anything. What makes the Whicher intervene is the fact that the soldiers want to torture the women because she is Temerian amd the execution and lack of oversight means no one will know or care aboutvthe women/criminals. He gets of his horse but as he is about to take the sword out he understands that the superiors ofbthese soldiers know that a Whicher took the contract to kill the monster that roams the local area, if he was to kill the men with a whicher sword their superiors will know who killed them. This is why he puts his sword back and killed them with a knife a weapon commonly used by bandits and thievs.
Upon leaving Geralt knows that the woman will kill/hang the man after what the Nilfguard soldier did to her country, her father, brother or son, and after what he wanted to do to her.
He wanted to grantvher the satisfaction of retribution.
This trailer is awsome because in the bestvtraditions of cinema you get allot of information that you can understand if you know the setting of the game, the medival historyand customs, morals and behaviour that the whicher is based on. It tells a strory without being overt about it in a natural way. The more information you have aboutvthe whicher world, and real life history the more you will understand from thisbtrailer. For people that do not know anything aboutvthe Whicher univers it will leave a seance of mistery and questions they will be able to answer once they play the game.
One last thing a monster is a creature that is opposite of a human behaves in a way that humans do not behave inhumainly. Humans in this world believe that creatures that are non human behave inhumainly (its a false assumption as not all monsters behave like monster and not all humans behave like human). Humans do jot want to admit they can do anytjing wrong and often justify their cruelty while assuming that all other creatures are degenerats and freeks that behave inhamy. This is the „racism” of the Whicher univers. The world of the Whicher does character building exceptionally well and it very rearly paints characters as bad or good. People are complex and they make mistakes and have vices. Geralt himself can endulge in moraly questionable behaviour. The player makes the decision and in most cases Geralts actions are an interpretation of the pleyers decisions. The consequences are logical and often hard to predict. The best way to play if to stick with your decisions. This game is very very nuances and has allot of small interesting details.

The story leading up to that cinematic was told in a comic also called Killing Monsters. Vesemir and Geralt visit a town being harassed by Nilfgaardian troops. Geralt gets into a fight there and in the chaos a boy steals from one of the men and a Nilfgaardian sergeant (the one about to kill the woman in the trailer) orders him killed for it. Someone shows up reporting that a monster has been killing peasants in the area and Geralt makes a deal with the sergeant that they will give him the contract for it and they will release the boy, which they do but they promise that if they see the boy again he will die. As Geralt and Vesemir investigate the monster which turns out to be a large necrophage, they find out that some of the dead bodies were killed by humans and not a monster, though there was indeed a monster on the loose. They eventually fight the creature, but in doing so it grabs both witchers and only lets them go when the boy shows up and throws rocks to distract it. They grab the boy and head back to the town where the boy reveals what the soldiers had been doing, which was killing peasants for sport. Geralt wants to kill the Nilfgaardian captain responsible for the killings but Vesemir dissuades him from doing so as they are only there to kill monsters. Instead they ask for the captain's help in killing the necrophage. However, Geralt slipped a plant into the soldier's belongings that would send the monster into a frenzy, and it came out and bit off the head of the captain and the witchers kept away while it killed the soldiers. They killed it afterwards and went to the sergeant from before to collect their reward where they found him and his soldiers about to kill another peasant, the woman you see in the trailer, on charges made up to justify the killing to the higher ups (because this wasn't something the Nilfgaardian army would tolerate, it was basically this corrupt captain who had died and his men including the sergeant).

the scene we witness here is most likely in Temeria, a kingdom that a big part of the books and this game take place in, Temeria has been invaded by Nilfgaard, one of the most openly aggressive kingdoms in the Lore. So her crimes most likely go back to struggling in war times, the first two most likely referring to not giving aid to wounded Nilfgaardian soldiers and looting their corpses. This scene never gets properly explained during the game, but the tone heavily implies something along these lines.

One thing I disliked in game itself, is how Nilfgaard was portrayed. Sapkowski made it quite an obvious reference to the Third Reich, and other kingdoms actually had no choice but to fight them as Nilfgaard nonchalantly commited bunch of crimes on a way, killing and torturing a lot of civilians (and THIS is showed quite good in the trailer). The game has made them just another actor in the cruel world, where their presence is not very much worse than others. Sometimes it even looks more preferable.
Of course, we can try to close our eyes and say "Well, Emhyr is something reformed after previous events", but I beg to differ.

The hammer bit isn’t about smacking them around with it; it’s about crucifixion. Because it’s a particularly horrific way to die or kill someone is what tripped Gerald up and clued him into that what they were doing had nothing to do with law and everything to do with there sick nature. Thus “Killing monsters”.
