      The backstory and the setting are important to know what is going on here. Diablo is very much a horror franchise and it's all about Heaven vs Hell, Angels vs Demons with the humans caught in the middle vibes. That villain is Lilith, they refer to her as mother because one Angel and her broke off from what is called the Eternal Conflict, and mated. They result was humans, hence the human capacity for good and evil. That's why she was referred to as "mother" because she technically is. The angel was called Inarius. There is a better cinematic of those two fighting.

    Pro tip: Any door that requires a blood sacrifice to open, isn't worth opening. And, yes, they willingly did the blood sacrifice to open the door, so that is "willing" for the purposes of the ritual

  • @BritGirlJay
    @BritGirlJay 5 месяцев назад +32

    They were indeed 'willing'. They came to the place willingly, thinking there was treasure. Simon the cleric, willingly gave up his life for knowledge at the end as he was already dying from that wound.

    • @massey81
      @massey81 5 месяцев назад +3

      Ive always felt the part of the "willing" was when they gave the blood sacrifice.

  • @TheTaratsu
    @TheTaratsu 5 месяцев назад +46

    He's not mind controlled, he willingly gave up his life because he knew he was dying. Now he could die with the knowledge he wanted, he didn't die for "nothing".

    • @paintwhisperer
      @paintwhisperer 5 месяцев назад +3

      The fact that , that point is lost on many really boggles my brain haha

    • @kiwio3o387
      @kiwio3o387 5 месяцев назад

      That's... not really what happens. I don't know if mind controlled is the best way to explain it, but he didn't do it for knowledge. Elias, just like Lilith, seems to be shown as pretty manipulative throughout the game. He surrendered to Elias, not to knowledge.

    • @TheTaratsu
      @TheTaratsu 5 месяцев назад +3

      @@kiwio3o387 He literally says after running from the monsters I came here for knowledge, and that's why that line is thrown back at him. That's also why he's given visions the moment of his death, they held up thier end of the bargain. You're right that he surrenders, just not why he does. There's no magic, just manipulation.
      They convince him to do it, with no other force than insidiousness.
      That's why he looks down at his wound, realizes he's about to die regardless. Elias was right, he came here to learn and that wound will take him anyway. So he willingly gives up his life, The blood of the willing.

    The opening to this pays homage to the opening cinematic of Diablo 1, the same sort of slow advance through the decaying town of Tristram to the ruined cathedral.
    So in this world, there is the Eternal Conflict: Demons vs Angels, the High Heavens vs the Burning Hells. The Archangels of the Angiris Council take on a noble aspect of character, such as Tyrael being the Aspect of Justice, or Imperius the Angel of Valor. The Demon Lords are obviously the opposite, and the three Prime Evils are the most powerful: Diablo, Lord of Terror; Mephisto, Lord of Hatred; and Baal, Lord of Destruction.
    Lilith is the daughter of Mephisto (the Daughter of Hatred), and along with an archangel named Inarius, they fled the Eternal Conflict, choosing instead to create a place where angels and demons could live in peace (as the two had entered into a relationship, odd I know). They captured the Worldstone that was held deep inside the Pandemonium Fortress, and used their power to hide it from the senses of the other angels and demons, and shifted it to a pocket dimension to build a planet around it. The world they created was Sanctuary (the world of the game), and demons and angels tired of the war sought refuge there, and in time, beings born of the union between the two came to be; the nephalem, half-angel and half-demon, and more powerful than either. Afraid of their children, Inarius altered the Worldstone in such a way as to dampen their power and keep them from overpowering their parents. Over time, the nephalem weakened even further through the generations, and eventually the vast majority ended up as regular humans that populate the world.
    Long story short, Lilith betrayed Inarius, he locked her away, and was in turn captured and taken to Hell to be tortured forever, but he escaped and is back in Diablo 4, seeing the world he built ruined by various events from the other games, and kind of turns into a dickish despot at the head of an overzealous hyper-religious army of followers who worship him. Lilith gets freed as you've seen, and is in turn working to subvert humans to her cause.
    The lore of Diablo is huge, not quite as much as WoW but still very significant.

    The Diablo world is indeed a Fantasy world, but with heavy influences from our world. Imagine a medieval Earth if the Church was right that Demons and the Devil was working in the shadows, that Angels really existed and that they both operated on Earth. Demon worshippers making blood sacrifices, etc.
    The Prime Evils are all named after classic demon names such as Baal, Mephisto and Diablo and the Angels are similarly named.
    As you can guess from this intro, the game is not very kid friendly, unless your kid is OK with torture equipment, dead and dismembered bodies with trails of blood, etc. It is very dark.

  • @Killertomato84
    @Killertomato84 5 месяцев назад +6

    it's the world of Sanctuary. Creation of Lillith as a place for her and her former lover Inarius (a former angel) to hide from hell and heaven. It's supposed to be sort of an earth adjacent place with the fantasy that heaven and hell really exist and interact with humanity. Humans being the half breed offspring of the angels and demons that inhabit sanctuary, and called the Nephalem, have the potential to be even stronger than the angels and demons themselves.

    My favorite part of this cinematic is the portal at the end. It's not just magical flames or energy or something, it's this completely gross fleshy membrane and she emerges from it like she's being born, which really suits her character as being a 'creator' or 'mother' figure. The image of her with the ginormous flesh cape and particles of blood that fall like rose petals is just both beautiful and macabre. Truly sets the tone for the story and the game.

    If you're interested in getting deep into the Diablo lore, Rhykker has a lore playlist that covers from the very beginning to some events in D3 (AFAIK he does intend to continue the series). Not as much lore as WoW, but it's still a great dark story with some cool characters.

    For sure in my top 5 favorite Blizzard trailers, and there's a lot of competition XD Never actually tried Diablo IV, but to this day, Diablo II is still one my favorite games . I had played games on console before that, but it was the first game that really hooked me and showed me the potential games had. I'm not even that much of a fan of hack and slash games but the atmosphere, the music, the cutscenes *chef's kiss*. I don't know if they'd still hold up today, but Blizzard remastered Diablo II so I'd def watch a reaction to the cutscenes.
