Kiriko 😂 first time i see kiriko (even before the animation) i said “i’ll gonna main this hero” since her first release i immediately have the intention to main her and when she was playable in game i immediately play only her for like 150 hours 😂 even now she’s my favourite pg and still my main
The thing I love about Kiriko as a character is that while she can fight, shes extremely capable... she has that nature about her which is lifting up her community, this is shown perfectly with her ultimate. while she says the area is under her protection, what she does in practice is empowers those around to defend themselves, to not let themselves be victimized. shes not saving them, shes helping them save each other.
A small detail I always enjoyed about this cinematic is how they use Japanese sign language and not American sign language. another one is that if you go frame by frame on 6:38 you see the blue glow in her eyes 'focus' like you see how the glow moves from surrounding her pupil, to concentrating in her pupil as she makes her physical movement. and the last kinda small thing I wanted to point out is around 8:34 where you see the camera angle go from one of the mom's shoulders and pass over to the other, while technically a breaking of the 180 rule, it's purposeful as a 'change of perspective' camera angle, signifying the mom changing her mind about Kiriko from the beginning of the story.
Something I wanted to mention: in deaf culture it's important when signing to someone to vocalize your words for non deaf individuals around you. Similar to how it could be considered rude to speak privately in another language in front of someone, or even to speak only vocally in front of someone deaf, it's polite to be inclusive in the conversation, and both sign and voice your words and signs so that everyone deaf or not can be included. The fact that they got this right is so amazing.
It's also because many people in the deaf community read lips. Speaking the words ensures you are giving the correct mouth shapes to the words, which in turn provides additional information to the person for whom you're signing, because signing is not one-to-one with spoken language. Many things like articles are taken out and have to be assumed.
One of my favorite, easily missed bits is when she first starts fighting, shes fighting like a Ninja, making use of Kunai, shadows, the steam. She's hiding and striking from a distance, reflecting her training with the Shimada bros... But as soon as she gets pissed, she stops using weapons and her style completely changes. She goes straight to melee, charging in bouncing off the walls and cieling, her mannerisms and movements become animalistic... because that's not *just* Kiriko in there anymore.
"She carries herself as an unserious person but look how she becomes when someone needs her help." And thus this man has grasped her character more successfully than 80% of the playerbase who don't understand why she would be cocky.
So much of what I love about this short is that it's like... what if a Japanese horror movie's supernatural being was actually the hero? Like... it is very interesting that you point out the hero framing on the gangsters, especially since their lighting is very bright and showy, compared to when Kiriko is going to town on them, and everything is so much darker. It does a lovely job of subverting expectations with that fight scene. I would say that this is unequivocally my favorite Overwatch cinematic XD
Most supports either give their power to the team, or overload their own abilities. Quick rundown: Baptiste opens a "window" where all shots fired through deal double damage and/or double healing, Ana empowers another teammate granting 50% bonus damage and 50% damage reduction (her ult doesn't even affect her), Brigitte starts stacking "overhealth" on anyone near her, Lucio provides overhealth instantly, but with a decaying effect, Kiriko creates a "hallway" which increases attack speed and movement speed, Zenyatta achieves transcendence healing at the highest rates in the game for anyone nearby, Moira unloads a beam which heals friendlies while damaging enemies. Supports are often make or break for a team.
LOVE the Overwatch videos. In the first video you made, there was the old picture with some guys, and Brigitte appeared with her mace-and-chain, which you at first thought might be Reinhardt's weapon. In Honor and Glory, it's Brigitte with Reinhardt. She's the daughter of Torbjorn, a different character, who happens to be the really small guy in the corner of that photo. That's one of the links that helps understand and tie those videos, and especially in the first video you watched it ties the picture in the beginning to the people at the end. Also, you did talk about how the videos showcase the powers of the characters, and you were absolutely right. They allow some level of creative freedom, in this short for instance Kiriko teleports towards enemies (In the game she can only teleport to allies), kicks (In the game she just throws Kunais), and she heals herself with her hands (In the game she has to use the "Ofuda"s, the paper-thinggie she puts on the chest of Mr. Oshida after he gets shot. But she DOES teleport, and her weapons are the Healing Ofuda and Kunais, with the usual Meelee attack all characters have in Overwatch. Her Ultimate is actually summoning the Fox Spirit which runs forward and creates an area where allies are boosted. It's a pretty amazing way to showcase the powers of a character. But it might be a good idea to go rewatch some of the videos, maybe off-camera, just to tie the stuff together. Though maybe it'd be even better if you finished all the Cinematics before doing that, and possibly even played a few hours of Overwatch to get a bit more familiar with the characters. Thanks for the videos, amazing series. Already subscribed to your channel and Followed on Twitch, and I'm gonna check your other stuff. I'm especially curious about Final Fantasy. Again, you're doing a really great job, keep up the good work!
They also got a "tatatata" (japanese character for gunshots) on the rifle being shot & "Thunk" word along the axe the little girl throws at the gangster in the elevator.
THIS IS MY FAVORITE CINEMATIC! I used to have a best friend that was deaf in middle school such fun memories, and the piano and mom crying it's just so feel good and nice... I'm not crying your crying Hoping you see the Sojurn trailer you'd love it :D
19:34 The animators also made sure to have Kiriko's canines to be slightly more pronounced than the other characters, in order to help reaffirm the fox motif.
Something I just realized at around 3:00 the background is actually a really good representation of Kiriko and her mom as characters. On the mom's side, the lighting is a normal white light and the kitchen is behind her, with things sitting on shelves in an organized fashion, whereas on Kiriko's side of the frame, the light is from these disorganized, strewn about pink string lights and you'll notice behind her is cans of spray paint, which generally evokes ideas of graffiti and rebelliousness. One of the cans is even lying on its side w the cap off. It's actually really cool how subtle that is in using the set to differentiate the personalities of the characters in the frame.
They don't take less damage or do more. Kitsune halves their cooldown timers and doubles their attack/ heal usage speeds, so whilst you might get more healing in the rush, you're not actually taking less damage, and whilst you might deal damage faster, you're not actually dealing more per attack.
If you want to know, the onomatopoeia at 14:00 is read dadada (in japanese) You could probably have guessed that but hey What I really find interesting (cinematically speaking) is how they hide scenes of violence on innocent people When the hashimotos come in, kiriko watches them through the door and when they punch the old man, we cut to kiriko getting this serious look on her face instead of just showing the punch Same thing, when he gets shot, the angle follows his face too, so we can just understand what’s going on by looking at his expression Also I don’t think we see how kiriko gets that cut on her face The villains are getting punched around though So we’re really from a specific point of view, we do not want to see the lovely civilians get hurt so it’s censored smartly enough so that we understand what’s happening without having to watch it, but since the bad guys are bad, we enjoy watching them get beaten down so there’s no need to censor it really
This cinematic leaked as a rough edit version before the official one came out and it was so different from previous Overwatch cinematics I didn't believe it was from Blizzard at first
I went into this not knowing what Kiriko's cinematic was, I had low expectations because the animation and character interactions are low quality imo. But then she opened the gates, and her eyes started glowing. And damn bro I felt the passion of a thousand suns! She wanted to protect her loved ones no matter what, and I'm inspired to save the name of my own life, the same way every day. In the name of Heaven, God bless amen all of mankind!
This kind of gave the wrong impression of the kind of hero Kiriko would be and even what she'd be like ingame. She's a badass going in close and personal with some really fancy moves with her kunai, then ingame she stays at a distance just hurling them instead. Your melee isn't even using a kunai. She teleports anywhere she damn well pleases in the cinematic, then she's only locked to allies ingame. She's spirited and really sweet in the cutscene, then ingame she sounds bored out of her mind in literally any interaction she's ever had. I often rewatch the cutscene, I believe it to be the best one Blizzard's ever put out there for a character.
Kirikos ULTIMATE is a AOE buff that increase the damage your enemies take from ally attacks and increases thier movement speed. So, she makes her allies faster and hit harder.
@@mutawi increased attack speed means you’re doing damage at a faster pace and the enemy is taking more damage in the same amount of time…. So that would technically be increased damage

1:03 you really dont need to explain basic concepts of conversation to us so much over really really simple things happening. it comes off pretentious. we get it, you call yourself a "filmmaker", just watch the video and react normally please :)

Way too difficult a choice! Top 3 are probably Sombra, Ashe, and Doomfist.

yeaaaah me too
For real I cry every single time 😢it's so good
Same lmfao i feel embarassed that I was crying 😂
Same. Even when I know what's gonna happen, I still tear up
i never expected to cry at a overwatch cinematic

Beautifully said
When her mother says that she "judged her donuts too harshly" is because Kitsune (humans possessed by fox spirits) notoriously crave sweets.

oh yeah you're right the glowing lights move from the irises to the pupil that's a neat little detail

Kiriko’s mother trained Genji and Hanzo from the Dragons cinematic.

If only those corporate suits at the top cared as much about the game as the animation team
When the grandfather gets shot the screen flashes "bang". I've watched this cinematic so many times but this was my first time noticing the word.
They also got a "tatatata" (japanese character for gunshots) on the rifle being shot & "Thunk" word along the axe the little girl throws at the gangster in the elevator.
Oh yay, you got around to this! I still tear up every time I watch this short, her interaction with the little girl is just so wholesome
I need more Overwatch stuff from you!
This intro does a really good job of integrating her in game abilities into the story.

so good!
aww cute cinematic and the action was insane, loved the breakdown as usual
sad that Blizz will never make cinematics like this again. T.T

Kiriko's mom isn't a playable character (yet) but obviously she's a character in the story of Overwatch.
Yeah, I'll wager she's coming.
I really like how this short is very similar to the Bullet Train movie.
if only she was actually the same way in game as this cinematic.

I may not be a fan of Blizzard anymore, but always gotta admit their cinematics team knows how to make a cinematic.
PLEASE react to Junker Queen trailer next. I think you'll really like that one
Is it me or is that a Madara Uchiha homage with the close up on the eye flick
i play this game every day first time seeing that full seen was sick im not crying as a 34 yo man lol
