You should have put a small amount a general use grease into the socket both ends before attaching. It’s not illegal to install these aftermarket struts on cars anywhere that I know of in the world. Also you don’t remove the actual support arm anyway. Finally the hood on a ND MX-5 is extreme light, I can’t see it hurting anyone to badly if both struts magically lost their seals at the same time.

This is highly ILLEGAL in Europe unfortunately. Every insurance quits as soon as you have an accident.
What do you mean? Illegal because it has mods?
There are loads of cars with no airbags under their hood, the Mx5 ND is quite rare to have one.
