You would think my Vietnamese would be much better since moving here but I have failed in my studies. I am leaving for Spain at the end of August and have been studying Spanish all year. I was doing a little of both every day but my head was HURTING!
    🤯
I have recently just settled on Spanish only until I go on that trip. When we return to Can Tho in October...I need to buckle down on my quest to come closer to the 'Phuc Map' level.

You're vietnamese pronunciation got so much better the past 6 months! Been watching you. I also noticed that in the sections where you slow down and focus on pronouncing each word, you sound a lot more native than when you're out on the street.
I think the reason is when you get excited your "American" tendency of stressing specific words more when there are already Vietnamese tones, so it dilutes the word a bit. Then when you speak faster, you gloss over certain tones when you should pronounce them clearer.
But leaving this comment because your progress impresses me so much!

Really interesting video with some great ideas.
I do think the advice "not to try and sound native" is a bit flawed, tbh. First, unless one is either quite young or quite exceptional, the chance of getting pure native pronunciation is almost nil anyway. It's not something to get obsessive about, but the better your pronunciation, the easier people will understand. Most of us will always keep some non-native accent. To me, being identifiable as non-native but un-peggable as far as actual country of origin, is pretty dang good!
Another thing I'd encourage everyone to do is to learn the sounds by listening first, and keep focused on listening. Latin-based alphabets can seem "easier," but they can also be misleading, especially when we start out reading before our ears are trained. For example, I hear people say, "Vietnamese has three different O's - o, ô and ơ." But an "O" is not a sound; it's just a circle. People use it as a symbol for a sound. English has all three of those Vietnamese sounds (or very close to them), but so many English speakers end up pronouncing ơ as an English O, for example, or "tr" as those two letters would be pronounced in English. Its not like a German who can't pronounce "w" because they don't have that sound in their language; it's because they're thinking of a letter that looks familiar, instead of listening to the actual sound. Rather outdated language teaching methods are largely to blame for that. Kids learn by listening to endless hours of sounds; they imitate and hone them, long before they ever learn a single letter. We adults need to forget some of what we "know," and learn to listen again.
Lastly - I know you don't think you're fluent, but I do think you're being a bit hard on yourself. Consider this: Fluency doesn't have an exact starting point. There's no one point where you aren't fluent and then you learn something and suddenly *click*, you are. 😊Sure, you didn't get it drilled into you day and night for your entire childhood! You might still have to think about some grammar or which classifier to use, or say some things in ways a local probably wouldn't. But you're clearly very competent in many environments.
You hold your own really well, you don't stammer, you're comfortable in Vietnamese and you have a great sense of the language and its use, humor and expressions. You clearly aren't going to say "oh I know enough now, no need to keep learning!" Keep working but also give yourself the credit. :)

Oh, if only Vietnamese people learning English would take your tip of LEARNING THE PRONUNCIATION to heart!!!! i find it very frustrating and annoying that Vietnamese people who, along with Thai, have THE VERY WORST PRONUCIATION of English of any people IN THE WORLD…will not try to understand you when you’re attempting to speak Vietnamese!!!!
Also, Vietnamese pronunciation may be among the most difficult (but isn’t Chinese equally?), but the actual language system is the very easiest. So I don’t know why Google would list it as the most difficult, that doesn’t make sense.
Anyway, your Vietnamese is so impressive, I really admire you, and, listening to this video, all the CONTINUING effort you put into it.
