MPC ONE for the Absolute Beginner: How to make a 12 Bar Blues Loop with Drums, Bass, and Organ

- In this updated MPC one video, I will teach the beginner how to use the MPC one as a standalone music making machine! I will show you how to navigate around and you will learn what the project file is, as well as the components that make it up. We will do this by making a simple 12 bar slow blues loop which you can practice guitar to or put into a digital mixer. You will learn how to control the volume of individual tracts and individual members of the drum kit (snare, kick, high hat ). I will also go over how you can use the grid function to manually put in your drumbeats vs. tapping them in with the pad.
This guy deserves an award for best ever MPC One tutorial. You are a God send, man. Thank you very much for this vid...im a total beginner on this device and all the rest of vids assume the viewer is a mind reader and knows it all already, often skipping important stuff. Not here thank goodness. Man , if you were British I'd recommend you for a knighthood. Thank you.
I agree this is the best video on RUclips for MPC..
lol I didn't even want to turn mine on until I was _absolutely_ sure how you "shut it down" for fear of ballsing something up 😂
Only had it a few days - these videos are a powerful resource indeed! ❤
Agreed 100%.
I love all the EDM stuff, but at heart I am a blues man, so this is perfect for me to learn with, and use in a way, I had hoped. As baking tracks, for my one man band fun.
And he covers all the important details, and questions I have, as a new MPC One owner.
My very words, Sir.
I totally agree lol
this is a "explain to me like I'm five" tutorial and I LOVE IT
thanks
The best tour guide I ever seen period…..good stuff.
I've seen SO many MPC tutorials and this is, by far, the best. Your teaching skills shine through here. And, what a breath of fresh air, it's not Yet Another video about a 2 bar loop of wkd beatz with sampled vinyl.
I have watched quite a number of free and paid tutorials about gear and softwares. I have to say, by far you have the simplest, yet most effective beginner tutorial I ever came accross. Sir you are a natural. Thank you so much for this amazing work!
Thank you for the kind words, and I'm glad the tutorial helped you :-) I am a professor of anatomy and physiology at a graduate school level, so I'm used to explaining complicated subjects :-)
you get an Oscar from me for the brilliant and understandable explanation. step by step ,go here press this do that . WOW that's how you teach . I hope Akai reward you for this. Thank you so much. I would have been lost without this.
I would like to thank you with all my heart and soul Sir! You just saved me so many tears and frustration...LOL! THIS is thee best turtorial I've watched BY FARRR, thank you thank you thank you much respect and many blessings to you!
One of the best tutorial videos around. I just got the MPC one and this video has helped me so much. So many questions that I have in mind were answered and things explained clearly. Respect sir!
Thanks from Italy for your support
This is an excellent tutorial video. I really liked it when you were looking for missing sounds" What happened? Where's the bass?..." Because that's just what happens when you use MPC for the first time. And that is not what they are showing in Akai tutorial videos. Thanks man.
Yeah, he has a great way of teaching!
Great video! Reminds me of teaching friends who to use the MPC 2000xl years ago back in '99.
Just picked up a MPC One+ last week and enjoying it. Great video! Dope chill beat!
Sounded like Mr Rogers showing us step by step how to use a new toy! I loved it and great tutorial.
LOL! I'm glad you enjoyed the video :-)
best tutorial ever for beginners. you take nothing for granted and make all the mistakes on purpose. excellent teaching skills dude.
GREAT tutorial!!! I'm a week in with my MPC One, and wouldn't have been getting anywhere without this video! Exactly what it says on the tin: this is for total beginners. Great stuff!
I hit the pause button (space bar), or backup 5 seconds button (left cursor button) on my computer, while I am watching this.
That makes it easy for me to do what you are showing, step by step, as you are showing it.
RUclips is such a brilliant tool, for learning new things.
Thanks again for sharing this.
Absolutely brilliant tutorial overview, as a prospective buyer I have learned more from this tutorial than all the other overviews and tutorials I have been watching over the last two day combined! Kudos, it was excellent :) Ps I feel for your arthritis, I too have one wrist is going and some knuckles joining in so was good you showed the full button to allow a soft touch. Keep up these good vids and enjoy your music
Brilliant! Very Nice Introduction to the MPC One...thank you very much...! Helped me a Lot...
very detailed and takes no level of understanding or lack of for granted. excellent tutorial. will recommend.
Excellent!!! This is the best video I have seen explaining the MPC One.
Tyvm!!! Excellent tutorial! I'm a Roland/Korg chick but getting into my first MPC & this was so incredibly helpful!!! New sub!
I personally make hip-hop music and i have to say this is the best tutorial ive seen. Thanks
This is a great video, it gives you the detailed basics to get you on the road and then of course after that it's all practice and repetition even when you began to make you own samples this video gave you the basics of knowing a How to assign pads, super video amazing how much these boxes do if you have the patience to explore every aspect of them.
Thank you very much for your video. It is people like you who can help people like me. It is fantastic that you take your time to explain everything so clearly. Explaining every step slowly is important to beginners like me. It is no use to me if everything is rushed through. These days the hype is "let me tell you quickly". Thank you again.
Yep. Agree.
Thank you so much. I got away from music and my mpc for about 8 years. You are the absolute best at explaining everything!
Your thorough tutorials helped me a lot more than any others thank u. U go nice and slow easy for me to follow and understand.
Thanks for taking the time to post this - hope to get an MPC One in a few days - very well explained
Very well explained...best I've seen so far. Subscribed. Thankyou.
Great video! You just helped me understand so much in so little time. Need more!
Got new MPC, and you got new sub, learning through this
Fabulous!! Thank you for taking the time to do what Akai should have done!! An excellent introduction that shows enough for us to all get started!! Well done!!
You sir, are a supernatural entity, sent from blues heaven, to show us the way 🎶❤️
I love all the EDM stuff, but at heart I am a blues man.
So this is perfect for me to learn with, and use in a way, I had hoped.
As backing tracks, for my one man band fun.
And you cover all the important details, and questions I have, as a new MPC One owner.
Can't thank you enough, for this wonderful MPC One, video guide.
Wishing you success in your endeavors, and fun with your music 😀
PS I noticed that a double tap, will open things, as you might expect, without having to tap "Do it".
Very convenient.
Have you takin the plunge? Just curious how it worked out as I’m in very similar circumstances and have been considering getting one of these mostly to make blues/funk tracks to jam/perform to.
@@philw8049 I did get it, and it is amazing.
Steep learning curve, huge amount of features, very powerful.
I am overwhelmed with new gear, and heavy gig schedule, so not giving it as much time as it deserves.
FINALLY someone not producing TEDIOUS TRAP on an MPC. 👍🥳🎉
Great video sir , just the kinda video I wanted 💯🙏🏼
This was brilliant, thank you. I just got a MPC ONE to use in a more traditional linear method with acoustic style instruments and this was exactly what I needed.
Please share how you incorporate what this video did, programming, with your "acoustical" instruments, assuming including dubbing voices, etc. Am very new with this... programming. Thank you.
Omg give this man a award 👏
Men! Your tut was the best i found, very clear explanation for begginners on MPC world. Now i can use this machine for creating cool music. My best regards. 5stars👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Many thanks for the clear and thorough tutorial. You were able to go through the basics step by step. More newbies should subscribe to your channel.
Thank you so much. An actual beginner guide
VERY calm teaching Sir. THANK YOU 👍
Awesome lesson and description of all the little ins and outs! Well done man! I was banging my head trying to get a blues beat down! I didn't use the TRIPLET beat type!
Your video is wayyy better then most of them, i can learn how to operate this machine better with your teaching.. Thank You

He says that "when you are in this program, this button does not work" by which he means that, the Q-Link knob does not work in that mode. This is a mistake.
If you look closely, you can see that the top Q-Link knob, is controlling the volume of the first(left) square on the bottom row.
Each of the knobs, controls one of the 4 squares volumes, on a row.
If you press the Q-Link button, it shifts the Q-knobs to control the next row above, then the next row, and the next, then goes back to the bottom, and starts again.
Very handy. Hope this helps clear up any confusion, that might have caused.
Love this video, very thorough.mode
This is excellent! Great way for me to work on new blues tracks!
Thank you so much. This was very helpfull i bouht mpc couple does ago. And i am/ i was complete lost. This was imo best beginner tutorial. I got answer to many question which i had. Like it very much. Thanks 🤙
Great tutorial that I can actually see the screen....All of the other MPC ONE tutorials have horrible visibility of what they are showing or the tutorial is not a complete tutorial. Well done! More thorough than LoopPop and more simpliied!
You are a good teacher!
When you were in "Notes" mode the pads were lit up exactly like the notes on the screen, same colors and placement. To me it implies that you could use the pads to play the notes at that point. I'm not 100% but that's what it looks like to me. You have a great way with beginners and the MPC One certainly has a learning curve if you've never used anything like it before. Good job!
exactly what I came here to say.
If I remember correctly he has bad hands so it’s easier to use the screen.
Thanks for this video it has really helped !
This is a very helpful video, what would make it even better is some time stamps! but thank you for sharing this information.
Great mpc tutorial. Thanks 👊
This is excellent. So in depth, well done... saving this to learn some bits!
Great video. Thank you .
Such an excellent tutorial. THANK YOU!
I hope everything is great Professor Douglas. I wish you can make another video making another song on the akai mpc one . I really like the way you explain things and I was able to follow along and make my own 12 bar blues loop. Anyways you are probably busy and I hope you have a great semester.
If I ever get Rich you getting a cut 💯 thanks for this tutorial mane !
Thank you! Wonderful tutorial
Great video, thank you. For the PAD sensitivity, it will still not make them great but you can change the sensitivity in "preferences / Hardware" 2 options, threshold und sensitivity. So you don´t have to push the full level button everytime.
And I agree discovering the mpc for the first time, that many menus don´t make sense as a user interface. You sure get used to it but it would make more sense for Akai to optimise their OS instead if sticking with it system after system.
Great tutorial!!
Very clever!
This one helped me a lot, best instruction for beginner! Thanks!
I just bougth mpc one
I nees learn all
Lovw this video
Thanks man👍🏻🎸
Can you PLEASE help me?? 🤦🏻♂️😫
I’ll try to be brief: I’ve got my drum machine patterns and synth bass made into one sequence in the “MIDI” section of the MPC One and I’m adding guitar using the “AUDIO” section, but my maddening conundrum is that whenever I “fast forward” the track, I can only hear the guitar parts I’ve recorded in the Audio section while the MIDI sequence of bass & drums cannot be heard. I’ll have to listen to the song all the way up to the section I’m recording and hope I get it right because if not, I’ll have to listen to it up until that part again and again until I get it right. It’s SOOO frustrating and tedious. Thank you!!
Thanks for this an excellent video very helpful 👍👍👍👍 .
Yeah thanks for making that. I found lots of handy tips in there.
amazing man, thank you
I really appreciate this video man. Thank You!
Good tutorial excellent job
Thanks for an excellent primer. :)
You did a GREAT job. I'm totally new. Seen many demos of this product, but I like your video. It really does goes through the full process, A-Z. Thank you for the clarity! Still searching internet to decide if this product allows me to create the "back up bands" in various genres for me as a singer-songwriter.
I can play all guitar parts, wondering how to take what you amazingly did and incorporate with my live instruments and voices, if that is actually possible. Just to let you know, I had decided NOT to buy this product-----until I saw your video. Now I'm thinking there might be a way to make this work for me.
Great vid. Found a lot of shortcuts since watching. Salmon Button, double click the button. Use the marquee button when deleting multiple notes or bars in the track edit. Easier way to reopen a saved project. A few others I can't remember. The more you play the more you find 👍
I'm gonna save this video to use when I buy the MPC One..
Fantastic Tutorial
I think he knows everything in my mind
just perfect...thanks bro
Fantastic......for me the best beginner tutorial....
Any chance of a series of beginners tutorials?
Thank you and I'm glad it helped you. I probably won't be doing a series on this, for I really just use this for bass and drums when those members of my group can't be present and don't take it to the next level - at least not yet :-)
@@justtheblues7412 OK thanks for the reply...this vid really helped, I bought this for drums and seq really ....but that Mini D plugin is superb....and I like playing it on the pads for some ridiculous reason!
Thank you humbly for taking the time to break down the basics & yes I agree I was a little disturbed finding out mpc one has no manual who does that lol. Btw: can you show how to adjust a sample to match the tempo of the beat etc. Thanks 🙏💯
Just perfect - thanks
Thanks so much for this mate. I want to make music, not just 'make beats' (far too old for that- hip replacement perhaps, but not hip hop!) The MPC One is a cracking piece of kit. I second Mark W's knighthood proposal!!
I'm aiming to create a trance grunge electro hip hop flip flop chip shop version of the Archers theme tune for radio 4 but i gave up on the MPC1 and got a Roland FA-06 keyboard and am having keyboard lessons - having seen this video i think i'll dust it off and give it another chance in life but it doesn't lend itself to intuitive playing at all - but perhaps i didn't try hard enough ? How are you getting on with it - if i get booked for Glastonbury i can show my bus pass as ID !
Omg thank you so much!
Just starting out with my MPC one. At 3:35 in the video you touch the "untitled" area of the screen to get to the Project screen, but my unit does not respond to my touching there(?) Wondering if there is something that needs to be set up? I am running firmware 2.11 which may have changed this? THanks for any advice.
I'm having the same problem with the "untitled" on my screen.nothing happens.😮
Nice vid!
Это то что мне надо !👍👍👍👍
Excellent video. I noticed you used the touchscreen when in "notes" mode when programming the bass and organ parts. But the pads that corresponded to the notes were also lit up. I'm assuming you can use the pads in notes mode and not the touch screen?
super helpful thank you
Great! Thanks U!
amazing VIDEO I truly LOVED IT
Can you do another video in Controller mode PLEASE
Круто! Спасибо огромное!!!
Это то что мне надо !
Impressive.
They should send this video out with the manual!
Thank you sir
THANK YOU
In your video 3:33 you push the word "untitled"on the touchscreen and it takes you to the in-between screen as you call it. When I touch the "untitled" on my mpc nothing happens.???
thank you
I'm a Cubase guy checking the MPC ONE...I like the Piano Roll grid...BUT why on Earth didn't they implemented a simililar Track View (a scrolling view with ALL the track bars, like in Cubase and in ALL the other DAW), it's a deal breaker for me. Great tutorial there!
MPC work flow is different from a traditional DAW. It's more preference really.
I just got a Samsung external 1TB SSD Drive off of amazon for $105. It's worth it as I lost all my work on the SD card. I heard the vibrations of the machine sometimes can make u lose work on the SD card which is why the SSD is much better. Something all Mpc One owners should probably look into.
thanks man!
No manual, seriously Akai?? Wow.
Ok so, I was just curious what peoples thoughts are on using an mpc to make non electronic music, like this blues for instance. I’m a blues guitar player but due to medical issues gigging with bands isn’t really an option anymore but I still love music.
I can’t afford a desktop with all the software needed to make backing tracks so I’ve kinda been eyeballing these things. Not like I wouldn’t do ANY electronic music, I could see myself doin some funky boom bap with a gnarly synth bass😊. But mostly I would like to make just regular tracks to jam, maybe even do a one man band kinda thing if I could make good enough tracks (I’m kinda picky in that regard, it has to sound good).
Any thoughts?
Where do I connect sound boxes/studio monitors to the MPC One?
Pretty cool. Can you sample your own instruments in and set up a song like you did? Or are you stuck with the sample packages?
Thank You💯💯💯💯💯💯🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇
