'Heart Shaped Box' rehearsal #1
feat. Charles Barkley, Adam Sandler, David Spade, Chris Farley, Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, Pat Smear
NBC at 30 Rock - New York City, NY.
Dave @ rehearsal: 💥🥁
Dave @ show: 💥 🥁
Dave sleeping: 💥🥁
Dave existing: 💥🥁
Grohl gives it 1000% no matter when or where he plays.
He over does it a lot if times.
Libra Baby Entertainment what do you mean?
@@librababyentertainment1592 i disagree.
Sure. He never kids.
Or what he plays.
Kurt, Krist and Pat are in rehearsal mode, playing at 75%. Dave is in Dave Grohl mode, 110% on everything, all the time!
Typically they tell drummers to play as they would in the show cause once they set the levels they don’t want a drummer to blow out all the levels during the real show.
He never hit alex van halen mode
I dont know how You insists in compare Dave and Kurt. Deve is a great musician but Kurt is an alien, a genius...
@@orlyqueiroz8512 Insist?
and your opinion is 17% without any basis in reality
Krist: Hardly moving
Kurt: Chill
Dave: A tornado of hair and drumsticks behind the drums
There is just 5 minutes staring at this old dude blankly 😂😂
Looks like a stage manager standing in as the host for blocking, lighting and timing.
And listening to the tuning :P
@@Overlorddz I love how these classic guys didn't need tuner pedals... just their ears. Tuning off a riff. George Harrison in the get back doc tells Billy Preston to play a lick (instead of just the one note) while he tunes
Kurt and Dave harmonize so great together!
They really do go great together. Even Butch Vig talked about how great their voices go together. Dave was an amazing drummer too so I don’t know why Kurt gave him so much guff about being a bad drummer. Maybe a bit of jealousy and ego trip? 🤷♂️
@@KD_1989... I bet if dave didnt harminiuze so well with Mr Cobain that there would have never been a Foo Fighters...
1993 was the last full year of Kurt. He will always be remembered, as a legend and a goat of rock music.
Goat Cobain.🐐🐐
It’s sad as well because he looks “healthy” here.
Last full year away from h… That would be 1990-1991 pre heroin kurt
Amen 🖤
When I see this, I think, " Wow, back when people could smoke inside of a public place."
+Hologram lol try smoking real cigarettes inside the SNL studio or any building with large groups of people today. You'll be crucified.
+Steven Johnson I'm only 28 and remember smoking cigarettes in a grocery store. WalMart was a place that they put "Please don't smoke inside store" but if you lit a cigarette, you could smoke with people not being outraged.
Why do rock stars and cab drivers all smoke? They must be connected.
+markmnorcal ha funny...and tru
+markmnorcal They both have to deal with people.
Man, even the "tuning" in the beginning was signature Nirvana sound. Amazing. Oh, and Grohl was in beast mode, as per usual ;o)
Even when Kurt was tuning it sounded like he was writing a hook to a song.
Watching Dave makes me smile;)
Fatalsprigs damn calm down brother
This was the very first performance of Nirvana with Pat as a member of the band. Pat had sold his guitars to get a plane ticket to Seattle to start rehearsals and Kurt gave him that blue Mosrite so he had at least a guitar he could use before Fender would supply him with new guitars.
+RastaSaiyaman Wasnt it that he came with his guitar (as far as I know he still has it, his famous wooden/golden looking "forgotthebrand" expensive fancy guitar. And the band said na-ah, cannot play that it would look weird. Then Kurt gave him the blue one.
pizzapingvin
Nope, according to Pat himself when he was interviewed a couple of years ago for "Guitarworld" he didn't own a guitar at all when he joined Nirvana because he had to sell them all.
loudwire.com/foo-fighters-pat-smear-smashing-fender-strats-kurt-cobain/
That fancy brand is Hagstrom and in those days they had been out of business since the late seventies. Kurt would NEVER object to Pat appearing with a gold sparkle guitar. In fact Kurt often borrowed a Hagstrom from the the guys from Mudhoney when the bands would tour together so he was quite familiar with them.
Look up the "Live and loud" footage and you will see Pat playing a Blue Fender, a Red Hagstrom and a black Fender which he later trashes.
pizzapingvin
Oh and another thing, working with Steve Albini made Kurt want to get himself a Veleno guitar, which is an all metal instrument.
He got one but never used it, Eric Erlandson from Hole later used it.
img.photobucket.com/albums/v118/turquoisemoleeater/guitars/Veleno-1.jpg
+RastaSaiyaman Thanks for the informations, it's very interesting. Personally, I really appreciate Hagstrom guitars.
+RastaSaiyaman is that the guy that killed kurt and later ppaf ?
Nirvana was the ultimate band, past present & future! RIP KURT
trueeeee
there isnt Future after Nirvana
Honestly it’s sad because most of the people that like them now is fake depressed girls that talk about how he killed his self instead of his amazing skills at guitar and singing but there are a few true fans scattered around
Tem a banda Dee, I Am é parecida
Only 6 months before his death. So sad. What a massive loss of talent.
Murder, you mean....
@@sublimegman Nope, his death. I don't buy conspiracy theories

@@pyschoclown1023 Yes, I certainly do. Thanks for the correction.
I love how Kurt Cobain can sing notes that are completely out of tune and yet is sounds awesome! haha
Is in key it's just not simple numbskull melody that you hear today on radio. Various notes are sharps in his melody. Bullshit on the radio is most of the time in the key of C
Out of tune? You’re ears are out of tune! He’s singing this, ‘perfectly!’ This is one of my favorite Nirvana songs! That opening riff, the pounding drums on the chorus and the lyrics, plus the thicker than ‘mud’ bass line! Awesome song, awesome performance!
In the verses, out of tune
@@cristianodgers4548 YOU are out of tune...
Nothin on top but a bucket and a mop and a new street book about birds... don’t know if I have the words right but that’s what I sing.
I love to see how specially Dave gives it all even on the rehearsals. It just means that he can not do it otherwise, that he was being just himself when playing a gig, just like Kurt and Krist.
5:43, And the camera goes straight to Dave's drumming... it's that awesome.
i was waiting for this comment :)
Grohl is adorable
To all those saying that the "Rehearsal" was better than the actual performance, they are a band. Nirvana plays REAL instruments, there are no back vocals, autotune, lip syncing ETC. Every time they have a performance it will NEVER BE THE SAME as any other performance. Thats the beauty of it, its an artistic expression of feelings, I LOVE the connection between the band & "US". If you want to hear the "BETTER" version by the fucking CD, because your missing the point.
+MY LOVE LOL...this is the early fucking 90's. They couldn't have done that if they wanted it! Your argument is so irrelevant. Mother fuckers be wearing time blinders these days...
+GooGuGajoob Tell that to Milli Vanilli
Exactly
+GooGuGajoob First I was not making an argument, I was making a comment. Second you call my "Argument" Fucking irrelevant...Well from the way your being ignorant just to be ignorant goes to show that you are a miserable person who puts others down to make yourself feel worthy. Apparently your not capable of understanding my comment, so go ahead & feed off your own negativity!
MY LOVE Karma police, arrest this man he talks in math. He buzzes like a fridge and I have crashed his party.
Who else is here after reading Dave Grohl's new book and wanting to see the video of the performances that he described.
I'm reading the book and then this showed up in my 'recommend' list so of course I'm going to watch.
how did he describe this
Thank you God for allowing this band's SNL rehearsal to be recorded and years later to be posted on a video platform called You Tube.
Fantastic! Thanks for posting!
I love the passion Dave has when he plays. I think he NEVER "rehearsed"💚🎶💪🏼🥁
RUclips gold! Thanks for posting this.
Holy crap, Growl is a heavy hitter even in rehearsals! No fooling around there.
+Doug Horne yeah that's what they always say about him. It was very hard to rehears for the MTV Unplugged sessions because he couldn't hit softly
+Hank Clock There is this interview out there with Grace Slick, who used to be the singer for legendary psych band Jefferson Airplane and she's talking about how she couldn't sing her children lullabies because as soon as she starts to sing the volume goes up to 11. She cannot sing quietly.
I'm a guitar player, but every time I have the chance to play drums I just start playing Nirvana and beating the living crap of the drum set, until the teacher which is my uncle tells me to stop. XD
zackattack94 ahahah
Doug Horne more like no FOOing around ha ha ha...ha.........ha
Thank you for posting this.
Love how Dave immediately goes for the cigarette as soon as they finish the first run through.
Was waiting for this comment 😂😂😂👍👍👍
Amazing how Dave carried this tune.
Dave knocking the hell outa those drums.
And not a single guitar was tuned that day.
That......is how a drummer should play. I hate watching live bands where the drummer is like a dead duck. Dave never disappoints...you can see he puts in everything to his drumming. To me...live music REQUIRES a drummer to be as active as Dave here.
sorry pal, but the music makes that call.
Thanks very much!
I wish they had kept the camera on that guy longer.
I love how Kurt always looks like he just got out of bed and says "Alright, I guess I'll be a legend." He was actually extremely aware of aesthetics and his image.
yesss dave is so energetic all of the time. what an amazing musician
Man I just love Kurt's vocals. He sound's amazing
Omg sounds so amazing. And dave so kick ass on those drums. Wish there was somewhere to see this is in HD
This aired on my 14th birthday. SNL cast members were Chris Farley, Phil Hartman, Mike Myers, Chris Rock, Dana Carvey, Adam Sandler, Kevin Nealon, David Spade, Julia Sweeney, Al Franken, Robert Smigel, Rob Schneider, Tim Meadows. My teen years were sweet!
The good old days of SNL and Nirvana. I liked these old scenes.
Kurt tuning his guitar and doing a sound check is still better than 99% of the "music" made today.
Better than mgk
you betcha
Lol fr
You sound just like you parents did when they compared their favorite musicians to Nirvana.
@@ruthie8785 Name me 5, nah fuck that... name me ONE band in 2023 of Nirvana's caliber.
10:05 the goofie things that every drummer do when they are not playing lol
They just delivered perfection
Nirvana levels of power
Krist-25%
Kurt-50-60%
Dave-10000%
I guess pat is 60%
Krist knows: save it for show time, THEN fire the guns.
Dave: Fires guns, still able to fire guns during actual show.
so cool. wish they had this for everything on snl.
Jesus, no one hits drums harder than Dave. My palms hurt just watching him.
sean kinney
A beautiful moment in time, that I am grateful I was alive for.
So long ago it seem like a lifetime. Oh, how I miss their music. Dave's band is great and all but they're no Nirvana.
I remember watching this live in my graduating year of high school.
what the fuck lol as soon as they stopped playing heart shaped box Dave automatically had a cigarette lit and he was hitting it talking about a true chain smoker.
0:00 - 15:23 is my favorite part
2021 December 24th , i miss Kurt , grew up with his music way back in 90s high school , getting high on his song , jam on Nirvana songs... Life was so simple.... Miss everything during that time.....
Me too. He was great with music.
lol daves goin hard as fuck while the rest of the band chills cause its just a rehearsal
If you didnt push forward at any point in this video, you are a true nirvana legend.
I love this band.
Wow. Thats the rawest ive ever heard of a commercial band. Too bad Kurt and the boys couldnt do it all them selves without the suits and ties, he would still be here today at least.
Nobody was happy with the sound mixing on this.. In fact, it was so bad, that their long time sound engineer got fired after this performance.
Which sucks as the mix that got broadcast was nothing to do with him! There was some shit with Dave though when Craig, their sound engineer, was trying to negotiate a higher salary on the basis that engineers with other touring bands that were less successful than Nirvana were earning substantially more than he was. Dave overheard and long story short he got let go. Thankfully he found work with Hole and proceeded to have a successful career.
where can i read about this?
I miss this FUCKING SHIT!!!!
Good to see Dave play drums again. Addiction does not play. RIP
lol I bet chris farley would have a lot of laughs with kurt cobain actually
Nirvana is the only band in the world for which ... if u would buy a new headphone - while listening to them soundcheck or rehearse you would feel that my loudest volume level is not loud enough.
Kurt Cobain - you are GOD that made all of us pick up an electric guitar and a distortion pedal to play some nirvana songs. \bows down/ Massive respect
Dave was killin it
All music really comes down to vision. All of art does. What was envisaged? What was created? Once you capture it...how do you recreate it? How do you continually realise the wonders of your original creation? Nirvana achieved the full sweep here. And because much of what they did had pain at the centre, how profound it is to continually hurt and realise that pain so beautifully. I genuinely felt that watching this performance.
Gotta love Dave
THE PART 2 AND 3 PLEASE!!!
Dave Growl has always been a better drummer than guitar player
better as a drummer than anything else. He is a decent singer, but his songwriting is his main problem, and yeah, that includes his VERY pedestrian guitar playing. He'd probably be better off writing vocals over another guitar player's riffs, but he's a control freak, obviously.
Lindee Levicke I would say his about the same i love nirvana my favourite band but also I’ve seen foo fighters and Dave on drums during that gig his made some amazing songs Where he plays nearly every instrument His songs are harder to play Then all of nirvanas Im because of the chord structure
@@foto21 sorry, you know he's Foo Fighters main singer and song writer? Cause otherwise your comment makes no sense
@@guidorodriguez96 yeah. But his songwriting and guitar playing really does SUCK.
@@MrPotatoMind Wich part exactly? You may not like his songs but he knows how to write lyrics, music and produce.
As someone who tries to write music I can tell you that he knows what he's doing, it's not just a mess of instruments and nonsense lyrics.
Again, it's okay if you don't like it but it's pretty mean to just say it sucks.
Pat Smears first time performing with Nirvana
They were game changers - and the change lives on.
Wonderful to see the late, great Joe Dicso, SNL stage manager for 20 years
noticed the second axe man, thtat only happened when the smack kicked in.... awsome
thanks to all the people behind cameras and technicians who record those backstages, for us fans the footages are gold.
I love those kind of strange nirvana performance.
I'd rather watch Dave beating the skins that playing guitar.
check out them crazy vultures, its dave on drums, lead singer of queens of the stone age and john paul jones of led zep on bass. dave still hits em and they stay hit! great side project

Apparently Andy Kaufman is still alive working under the name Kris Novoselic
Ha,ha, good eye! Kris is really Andy, taller, but it is ... ; )...
jetnut89 lol
jetnut89 I knew there was a connection between Andy Kaufman and Nirvana somewhere. I bet Kurt enjoyed Kaufman's art.
Ive noticed that since the early days! lol he does look like Andy Kaufman!
Actually it's Krist
Pat Smear with Nirvana was short lived though
Dave still rocking hard even in rehearsal
Joe Dicso staring at the camera is unironically the best thing about this video
This video proves Dave was irreplaceable to nirvana and was just as important to its success as Kurt. With a lesser drummer nirvana would not have exploded into success
none of them were replaceable.
oh please. Give it a fucking rest. Grohl was up to the great musician that Cobain was, but Cobain was 1000x more important than Grohl. I know 100 drummers who could've played this, AND written it. This song is not rocket science on the drums. Say that about Bonham, or Moon, or Mitch Mitchell. Grohl was a great dummer, no doubt, but Cobain didn't need him. Grohl has done one good album since Nirvana, the first one. Since then, it's been a long road of mediocrity and being FAR too overrated.
Utter bullshit.
switchfoot881 with respect to Kurt, Dave was already developing the foo fighters, and the band was about to jump ship
Kurt was actually thinking about replacing Dave.. he wasn't happy with his drumming on the in utero tour.. at one point he quit the band, but was talked back into it by the manger, cause they were contractually obligated.... He was gonna quit anyways... well, he didn'thave to wait that long, only a few months, and the band was no more.
