  • Mohini Dey first picked up the bass at age three and was playing professionally by age ten. She became a global RUclips sensation and caught the eyes and ears of notable musicians worldwide such as Steve Vai, Stu Hamm, Tony McAlpine, Dean Brown, and more who have shared a stage with her. Australian Musician editor Greg Phillips sat down with Mohini for an in-depth chat at her first ever NAMM Show www.australianmusician.com.au/

She is a wonderful person as well as a phenomenal bass player. We had just missed her performance at the Mayones booth at Namm, but me and my buddy begged her to play. She plugged her bass back in and started messing around. Next thing we know she is really jamming out and a crowd started to gather again! So thank you Mohini for your graciousness in playing again. It was certainly the highlight of our NAMM experience!

I'm a hand drummer and I SO relate to what she said about loving to play in as many genres as possible. I've drummed for rock bands, blues bands, Indian kirtan bands, African marimba bands and for church choirs! I love it all. I love the challenge. It all makes me a better drummer. I only wish I was as good as Mohini when I was her age!

I like how you said music gives you total "freedom" I agree. I am glad you studied Jaco Pastorious also. And, how you described your bass- how easy it was to play, that it basically plays itself, with extra head room. I endorsed a bass once for Kramer years ago.

Mohini has been my favorite bass player since I first saw her on RUclips within the past few years. From watching this interview I can see that she's not only a brilliant and ultra-talented bass player, but she's so incredibly intelligent, friendly, and a joy to listen to when she's talking about music, basses, or just anything. Mohini is so multi-talented, and, in addition to that, she's a really beautiful lady outside and inside! I look forward to hearing all the great music she composes and takes part in recording during her lifetime. :)

She was lucky to have been in the family environment of music, and exposed to all the many facets of music/musicians. The internet has made her known, and her equipment makes her playing sound great. But as many say, she is just a great down-to-earth person whom really has the passion and appreciation for her craft. With many great years ahead of her she will be respected as "legendary" if not now, then without a doubt, at some point.
