One of the last movies my wife and I watched before she died last year was the Phantom Thread. We never said a word during the whole film. At the end we looked at each other and said, "Wow." We had watched the same film with the same eyes and ears we shared for so many years. This theme cemented our love of this film and each other. Kathy I miss you every day. I love you.
It's so sad to hear your loss. May her soul rest in peace. My heartfelt condolences.
Thanks Bhaskar. Very kind of you to comment.
@@JakeKniest That's okay, Mr. Kniest. I hope you are doing well.
@@bhaskarsharma991 Doing fine. I hope today finds you well and safe.
My condolences Jake..
I want to live in this composition.
Sara Blooms Perfectly said...damn!
I have lived there, but it was so fleeting.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I was looking for the right expression for how I feel about this composition and yes, this is exactly how I feel....
Best comment I've ever red
Jonny Greenwood was robbed of that best soundtrack Oscar. Daylight robbery
Robbery in the acting categories, best picture and best director as well
Radiohead players always get robbed of the popular awards.
@@mackielunkey2205 It's not like they care about them. Haha.
It got 4th place
@@mackielunkey2205 and not just awards. I still haven't seen 007's Spectre, but c'mon, Radiohead's Spectre is so strangely elegant - or elegantly strange, they really had to play it safe with the other theme, didn't they?
This song makes me want to eat a big breakfast.
Quietly though
Hahahaha! So true!
with questionable mushrooms?
😂😂😂😂

Courtesy of Pitchfork:
Phantom Thread is a film about the limits of perfection. The pursuit of beauty is solitary and futile; love brings bitterness and disappointment. Jonny Greenwood’s score is a self-conscious composition to match... There are countless moments of aesthetic bliss that threaten to overwhelm, but never do: It is ambiguous how good any of this should really feel. You cannot live a charmed life forever, the music suggests.
_
The main theme, “House of Woodcock,” is the best example of fleeting satisfaction, as its florid motif vanishes just as soon as it peaks... The Phantom Thread score captures the hope that’s always out of reach, the desire for something more, and the acknowledgment that as you settle back down to reality, you realize that what’s around you is not to be taken for granted.
Particularly the mushrooms.
I love that insight
Amazing insight
Brilliant little commentary on the movie and score.
Pitchfork finally doing something right
Jonny Greenwood proves himself as one of the greatest composers of our era (Once more).
I'd say incredibly underrated film composer. There Will be Blood has my vote for greatest film score of the new millennium (and this is coming from an ardent John Williams fan).
David Coscina lol as if John Williams fandom in the 21st century means anything
Mica Levi
Arcade Fire
There's some really great (new) scores this millennium. I agree Greenwood is one of the very best though.
THE best is still maybe Angelo Badalamenti
I’ve thought the scores for There Will Be Blood and The Master were just incredible immediately. Just not the music you’d naturally expect to be put to either of those films but they work so perfectly you can’t imagine them with anything else.
jesus ocando Anderson is by no means “ignored” by critics, There will be blood was named greatest film of the 21st century by the New York Times, and Radiohead ( Jonny Greenwood being the main guitarist)records often top greatest albums of all time lists. So no they’re not underrated by any means
This film has the most chic soundtrack ever.
what does that word even mean? chic?
Dual Screen Fucking chic!
Fucking chic? Whoever came up with that filthy little word should be spanked in public.
It's also subtly humorous.
joystick83 it hurts my feelings!
This piece of music made the film for me
Now that I think about it, the opening scene isn't very special, yet my eyes were nailed to the screen with this score playing.
Listening to this feels like a warm, cozy blanket wrapped around me. I remember sitting in a packed theater watching the movie's opening scene with this score playing, and everyone was silent and still and simply awe-struck.
Can't wait. Unfortunately I live in a "flyover" state, so I probably won't see it for like another month or so.
Natalie T yes exactly and the opening score of phantom thread reminds me of Kubrick's lolita opening scene.
Graham Newmarch Speaking of the beginning: Did anyone else feel high during the very 1st shot? The dark, wooing sound that crept up on the screen as the words "Phantom Thread" appeared. It felt so surreal, and I might be crazy but I have been high and the beginning gave the same feeling. I watched it another 2 times and the same effect happened too.
Which theater if you don't mind my asking? Was it before the wide release?
It was actually the very first screening of the film. It was at the Ahrya Fine Arts theatre in LA... And I got to meet Paul!
This is one of the most beautiful pieces of music i’ve ever heard in my life..
YES

This is a most beautiful piece of music, almost feels extinct from this era.
00:24 Oh, that luscious cascading waterfall of gracious notes. That was the part that hooked me.
This track feels like a miracle. It's so perfect and delicate and beautiful. Jonny was robbed of the Oscar.
There is such a sense of nostalgia here and a feeling of dwelling in a forever early morning dream like misty garden. I often listen to it while out on my own early morning hilly suburban walks.
This is so beautiful 😭❤️ Jonny Greenwood is such a musical genius.
by golly he's worked for it
I just saw the film, and the score was one of the best things about this excellent film. Simply breathtaking.
This is the best thing i've heard in quite a while
Me too !
Me too 😆
Superb film and soundtrack.
This is what movies can be.
The most beautiful song I think I genuinely have ever heard in my life
This is heartbreakingly beautiful. The exquisite pain of it.
His film scores for PTA are some of the most haunting, bewitching sounds I've ever heard. Can't wait to see Phantom Thread.
Just saw the film. On repeat for hours afterwards...
I had a moment earlier today hearing the soundtrack play out loud in the theatre, i won't ever forget it. Thanks Jonny
This is the one and only song I've ever heard that makes me cry on its own. I've never been touched more by music in my life. Truly a one of a kind, and the most beautiful piece of music ever composed.
I mean the entire thing is absolutely amazing. But when that cello comes in at 2:50 oh myyyyy godddddd it gets me everytime
It's also my favorite part of the entire piece. Everything is placed so perfectly. Everything just works as one whole, and it's greater than the sum of its parts.
Happy Valentine's to anyone here listening today. Surely one of the most romantic compositions ever written? ❤
I fell in love with this movie the moment I heard this track. I still can't wrap my head around its beauty.
A great “spin” on the “light” music of the 30s and 40s mixed with the deeper sensuality of French Impressionism.
Rohme Giuliano nailed it
nailed it.
Hmmm , yes I quite agree ( googles French impressionism )
""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
Nailed it
he deserves to be covered with awards for this composition
This movie has one of the most hauntingly beautiful soundtracks I’ve ever heard. It’s so fleeting yet so melancholic, like a lost dream. 🌹✨
I am in love with this film and this piece of music. Absolutely beautiful.
Complexity and depth of a classical pieces accompany with the piano having the simplicity of the unorthodox allure of a Thelonius Monk repetition. Simply genius.
This is exactly how I feel inside once I fall in love.
this is one of the most wonderful soundtrack that I've hear in my life......and the film is a masterpiece......THANK YOU SO MUCH SIR DANIEL DAY-LEWIS AND THE OTHER AMAZING ACTRESS AND ACTORS.......THANK YOU MR.P.T. ANDERSON........
I swear Greenwood is a man that’s so cunningly smart, it’s unfair
As soon as the picture began with this piece, I was almost brought to tears. How absolutely Lovely...
I just heard that Yuna Kim's decided to skate to this one! Aww, can't even imagine how gorgeous she will be with this music.
Most beautiful evening walk in fall
Autumn haters when they walk
This is the work of a fully developed musician at the height of his talent.
The Bernard Herrmann and Debussy comparisons are fair, although the Penderecki influence will always be there, somehow.
I envy the skill of such well-shaped mastery. Good for him.
Bill Evans influence is incredibly heavy here. You can even refer to Skating In Central Park. Jonny listens to Bill Evans a lot.
Didn't really like this movie in first viewing. Second viewing I literally couldn't get it out of my head, the beauty, the subtlety, poignance. Truly a masterpiece. This music takes me right back to it.
I dont understand this. Loved it first time
@@jens2049Have you never watched a film and it doesn’t connect the first time? I stand by watching films more than once because you never know what you’ll get out of a second viewing.
Exactly
Within the first few seconds of this piece my eyes began welling up with tears. My eyes continued to well up throughout, especially during different highs and lows of the piece.
Jonny Greenwood made some beautiful art!! Hope the Oscar goes his way.
Life must be... as beautiful as this composition
The biggest snub at the Oscars tonight. We love you, Jonny, sooo much.
Agreed
Probably the most stunning movie score I’ve ever heard. It’s like stepping back into early 20th century London.
Hopefully Jonny will (FINALLY) be nominated for an Oscar next year
He’s already won 2.
Brad Bettis no he hasn't
He's probably going to get hosed again, because I heard that part of the soundtrack contains previously composed music
kelvinl777 yeah which is b.s. I guess Hollywood only likes giving score oscars to America rock musicians like Trent Reznor. Mind you Elfman has been working for three decades and hasn't gotten an award...
kelvinl777 They always make sure to differentiate the existing from the original. Greenwood should be safe for the nomination.
Just saw this yesterday. Beautiful. Even though Reynolds and Alma don't have the best relationship, this music was the best part of the entire film. The whole time this particular song stayed in my head. Strong melody and perfect tone.
Jonny was robbed of an Oscar.
Film scores like these are why I love filmmaking so much
This movie feels like a ballet more than anything. It's like watching some cosmic dance, like stars being attracted to each other through vast reaches into each other's arms and their fiery doom
This is the most poetic youtube comment I have ever read. Thanks!
I listen to this song so much, it takes me to a wonderful place of beautiful dresses and beautiful things from this era, like a comb or kitchen set
Jonny has a very long and fruitful career ahead in film if he wishes it.
OK? Not OK. He is literally our generations Bernard Hermann
I want to call that hyperbole. I can't. Jonny Greenwood might be one of the best film composers working today.
Roberto Horacio De Lugo Agreed. I can't remember the last time when I've heard a beautiful score like this. Johnny greenwood and PTA equals masterpiece
I mean, he's already done like 4 PTA films and that new jauquin pheonix film, so i'd say his career has been under way for a while
I mean, he's already had a phenomenal career with Radiohead. He could retire today and be remembered for a long time, yet he's only in his mid-40's.
Not many instrumentals bring tears to my eyes, but this beautiful masterpiece does.
That music sounds like something unreal, part of the dream that will probably never happen and it only exists in our heads. There is sadness in it, and speechless beauty which reminds me of this part of the summer, in which we already can sense the fall coming. And it is also something very sensual in it, sexual too. Like seeing your beloved one's face in the light of the moon.
I'm going to send this to my grandma. She loooves classic songs. And I'll tell her that it's made by my favorite composer Jonny Greenwood💕
Thank you Mr. Day-Lewis for an incredible career. Your dedication shined through your performances. I can't think of a more beautiful swan song to go out on.
I was in Virginia Beach when this came out in the theatre. I was literally the ONLY black person in line to see this remarkable film...lol. But you know what we all walked out the theatre captivated by the performances of ALL the actors. This is a classic and will only get better with time. Love, love this film and the musical score behind it! One of my favorite films in the past twenty years.
I remember watching this movie the 31st of December, 2020 completely alone. With everything that had happen in that year, I just wanted to finally end. Around afternoon, I put this movie and just watching that first montage with this amazing music it brought me so many indescribable feelings. Peace and joy, but also conflict and so many more. Nevertheless, it has become one of my favorite films ever since...
I don't think I've ever been so absolutely taken with a films soundtrack. It is brilliant, it is so confrontational and bold in it's demand to be noticed and to be a character in and of itself. The confidence and vision it takes to write something like this to accompany a movie like this, it is just insane.
Without a doubt Jonny Greenwood is the best composer of the 21st century and the most creative of all
The score is so elegant captures the essence of the film. It fits so well.
I come back to hear this amazing composition every time I'm feeling hopeless sad or when I'm inspired too. It makes me feel at ease and also hopeful that love it's gonna nock on my door some day and it inspires me to keep living my life.
Its really weird revisiting this song. This song used to be the thread that kept me tethered to reality, a hint of the beauty of life while I was sinking and grieving and self destructing. Now it's a heavy reminder of a very specific time. Many tears were shed to the swells of violins over the grace of the piano. So strange, noticing and remembering such intense feelings while not being consumed by them. I can feel my relapse in the next room, separated from it, but its still there, so close I can almost taste the whiskey in the notes.
Debussy vibes
Exactly what I thought. Definitely inspired by Debussy's lush melancholy and gorgeously tumbling waves of notes that seem to drop down gently from somewhere divine.
+Sausage Fingers
One of the first things I thought of when I heard this piece was Debussy's Arabesque No. 1. Then I saw this dude's comment. So I think maybe yes really...
+Sausage Fingers
lol come on man, you're just being pedantic at this point, and I dare say a bit presumptuous (telling a complete stranger that they have a "narrow understanding" of something based on a brief exchange). Don't know why you're so hung-up on this, but if you look back at these comments, you'll see that nobody said it sounds *exactly* like Debussy or that Debussy is the only artist whose influence can be heard in this. But plenty of people (on this page, and other forums) have made similar associations, not to mention the fact that the film's soundtrack (curated by Greenwood) also contains at least one actual piece by Debussy. I think it's safe to say that Greenwood had Debussy somewhere in his thinking when working out the "vibe" he was going for. I've even seen other comments on this page mentioning that it calls to mind Bill Evans at times, which I can also hear. This is, of course, all very subjective stuff, but you seem to want to make an objective ruling on it.
Yes. The film also featured scherzo from Debussy's string quartet. It was so close to the style of other music in Phantom Thread, that you'd have to know the piece on order to tell the difference.
It's Debussy, Ravel, and Satie all together with a jazz element thrown in (check out that chord at 0:16).
It also evokes old Hollywood gorgeously.
Beautiful Music...perfect for Yuna’s next performance! 😊🌸❤️🤙🏼
This song gives me goosebumps, holy crap
What makes an OST soundtrack so great? The fact that people doesnt behave like listening toy a soundtrack but to a beutiful piece of music. The oscar ( if by any manner means anything to this miserable world) is yours my friend. Well done!
Gorgeous
One of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard!❤️
gracias a dios existen personas así que crean obras desde lo más profundo de sus almas. imaginar un futuro con genios que desintoxiquen el mundo sólo con música seria fantástico
Listening to this exquisite piece of art feels like you are witnessing Bill Evans' use of space (i.e., "Skating In Central Park") with Debussy's lush harmonies, and Ravel's beautifully crafted orchestration is already there to make it even more unforgettable... Jonny Greenwood is an incredibly versatile, auteur composer and musician. My personal favorite and his effort for spreading his enthusiasm about classical music to younger generations is brilliant. True original and iconoclast... We can't thank you enough but thank you for changing my life Jonny!
I knew this movie was a masterpiece just by hearing this piece at the very beginning.
Beautiful. This song is so ethereal. It makes all my worries disappear.

I physically cannot get through this entire soundtrack without getting chills running down my spine
Can't wait to see Yuna skate with this music!
I really hope he wins some award for this. It is as exquisite as the film itself.
jonny is nominated for best original score,it's a great honor for the oscars
Star wars better not win. Everyone is damn near the same. lol.
cdreyes81 "Star Wars" hadn't won a Score Oscar since the original. I don't think it's gonna change with "The Last Jedi". The score that could possibly beat "Phantom Thread" is "The Shape of Water", but Alexandre Desplat did just win recently for "The Grand Budapest Hotel" (even though Hans Zimmer should have gotten it for "Interstellar") and the Academy clearly loved "Phantom Thread" more than anyone expected, so Greenwood could possibly win.
Crossing fingers
God, how can a piece of music elicit so much emotion?? This is so beautiful, so so beautiful it makes me cry!!!
Absolutely flawless
I'm in love with this film.
How did this masterpiece not win the Oscar? The Shape is
The shape of shit won..I am so mad...ugh
The lighting, the music the acting just wonderful...lovely film.
He is the greatest living film composer.
Yes, he is.
Working with (possibly) the greatest living filmmaker.
i love radiohead, and the work obviously of Jonny in films but, lets be objective people- is not the greatest living film composer. it might be one of the greats. but not the greatest. lets keep it real guys. still its fucking brilliant hands down no doubt about it.
I think he's one of history's greatest composers period, for film or otherwise.
Naaa. dont think so guy- i believe it is premature to say that. while the guy is still alive. art needs time and therefore perspective. and with that in mind time will give you a better perpective to judge who will stand the test of time and still be relevant. like so many others artist not only composers. all kinds of artist. so to say that just now. is just talking without having lots a perspective. STIL DONT GET ME WRONG, I LOVE THE WORK OF THE GUY, JONNY IS BRILLIANT AND VERY CREATIVE AND TALENTED, THINK HE CIS THE MCARTNEY OF RADIOHEAD OR THE GILMOUR OF RADIOHEAD.
The versatility of Jonny is his greatest asset!
I hope this wins the Oscar.
A masterpiece. This arrangement has been stuck in my head since I walked out of the cinema 2 weeks ago.
2 years ago for me. It still resonates
At first this used to be a sad song for me because I couldn’t see her, now it’s a happy song because I was lucky enough to meet her
So beautiful. So tender. So lovely.
Incredible film, incredible score...
Jonny G, you genius! I don't think I have ever heard a score this beautiful and comforting but with the constant inkling of something sinister lying near.
This brings a lot of warmth to my heart
This is a piece of art in every sense
It's like one of those days on springtime when you go outside of your dream cottage and see your sunflowers finally boom, and you are greeted by your sheepdog. Sun feels tasty and the berries from your bushes taste sweet
this song is incredible, brings life and you can imagine listening to this in that house during the time period.
I feel as though I've been looking for you for a very long time
Je viens de voir le film, merci Arte!
Quel beau morceau...
Film énigmatique mais qui ne laisse pas indifférent.
