Now, I know that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a bogus institution, but if ever a band deserves to be in it, The Meters do. Thumbs up if you think so too. If jazz and blues originated in Congo Square, then funk was born in Treme. God bless the Meters!!!
Absolutely criminally underrated in the wider scope of music history. The Meters are the true funk masters. If someone is talking music and they bring up the Meters, I’d instantly respect them. Never has happened though...
Dude, I play a little guitar and whenever I want to feel cool I try and copy the Meters. Not steal, just really get nasty on Meter-like riffs. I wish I could prove it to ya, but my phone is FULL of me making funk riffs on my looper.
Could not agree more! I'll do a back flip if somebody mentions The Meters to me. Saw their 35th reunion show at JazzFest. Will always love and respect them!!
RIP Russell Batiste. Second best drummer from Nola after Zigaboo imho. Thank you for posting this. My first time in Nola was a few years after this and I've been hooked ever since. Just saw George last week here at Brooklyn bowl for somewhere around my 120th time. So cool seeing him here when he was relatively younger. So wish Art was still with us too. May he RIP
This is their ten year re-union at 1990 Jazz Fest on Congo Square stage- I was there and have a few photos from the set. Russell Batiste Jr. on drums and not Zigaboo. In Knocking On Heaven's Door that is Jimmy Buffet who also played helping out on vocals. Also on that stage was Little Feat (ruclips.net/video/pWrEGXy6ym0/видео.html) and Gregory D & J'Ro'J with Manny Fresh and a dance troupe from Senegal. Thanks for the memories.
That sounds right. By 92 they were playing as the Funky Meters with Russel Batiste and Brian Stoltz, no Leo or Ziggy. I guess that is Russel in this one.
@@joshuamartianactually I believe Brian Stoltz joined in early 1995. Leo was still playing with them in November 1994. And Leo was doing “solo” shows in spring of 1995.
I think this is the first version of the Funky Meters with Russell Batiste replacing Zigaboo Modeliste. Not sure how long this lasted. Fairly quickly Leo quit and they replaced him with Brian Stoltz. That configuration played for many years. Not to slight Russell, but he’s not Zig. There’s something that happens when he’s there that’s different and to my ears better with Zig there. Thanks for posting this though. Still one of my favorite bands.
Batiste got some modern chops and would work on some funky-ass King Crimson type shit, but Zig just fuckin grooved like nobody else- syncopation station.
You could never beat the original. Zigaboo is easily in the top 3 best funk drummers ever. But I gotta say that Russell did an amazing job with the energy he brought to The Funky Meters
The meters are the best to ever do it PERIOD !!!!! I’m from and live in New Orleans have seen the Meters hundreds of times always better with the originals all together Rest In Peace ✌️ ART !Nevile aka papa Funk !!!!!
ah, was looking for this. Thank you. First thought it was a fender tele thinline, then noticed the body looked bigger and shaped more like a 335, but the head stock didn't;t match. Anyway, thanks.
@@emergencyexit1120 You're right, this is definitely a starcaster (this has been reissued by Fender a few years ago and it's still manufactured by Squier, as far as I know. Unfortunately, both versions, Fender or Squier do not feature the original pickups). Funny also to See George Porter Jr. playing a G&L and not his legendary Precision.
Meters - Africa.........if their was no 'The Meters' there would be no 'RHCP'.. ruclips.net/video/WYU7kZlArx4/видео.html 2 of the best bands in the world going at it
Such a pitty, that there is no good recorded/produced live album of The Meters (that I am aware of). They are live hot as hell. "Uptown Rulers" has excellent played tracks, but the sound is horrible (in my opinion)

They're not in the Hall?
THATS BLASPHEMOUS!!!
@@missayawk They were nominated a few years back, but didn't get in. Shows you how stupid the HOF is.
Amen Brother!
Yeah you right!!!!!!
Leo's my godfather, such good times and good lessons as a then young guitar player myself. He was cool to grow up around.
Man u blessed that's fur sure.
Great player. I'm betting you got some of that. Hats off to Leo and you too.
Absolutely criminally underrated in the wider scope of music history. The Meters are the true funk masters. If someone is talking music and they bring up the Meters, I’d instantly respect them. Never has happened though...
Эти джентльмены сегодня стали для меня открытием. Невероятный грув

and the ohio players..
my dad had all theyre cds I'm gonna record my own album I play mostly drums keys and guitar go back to the roots
In ‘92 you didn’t exactly have to make a bank loan to go to Jazzfest.

This was my first jazzfest. I was there. My introduction to the meters.
this drummer makes dance everybody in a hurry.
incredible groove and sound,
beautiful vocals and of course music
RIP Russell Batiste Jr! 🥁
AMEN
This music is medicine for the mind, body and soul of the highest order !!!
RIP Russell Batiste ❤❤❤
This explains my whole life .. born in New Orleans.
Same here! Much love from New Orleans my people
Yea the Meters are DEFINITELY, underrated...
I knew the Chilis held these guys as an influence but never realised Africa was a cover!!! So cool to finally hear the original…
The Meters were the greatest rhythm section ever.
Yup
absolut!
Desitively!
Use to watch them often at the Ivanhoe in 1969.
I was in a band called White Clover.
We wee the house and at The Roach on Royal
Rip Russell
Amazing performance !👏👏👏
Wow. I miss festivals
No shit my man, I was watching this and imagining I was in a crowd just vibing. I due time music will be back!

This is so awesome! And I love all the solos especially at 7:57 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Classic funky meters. Got to luv 'em.
Thanks for posting!!
So, so great. A mere 31-1/2 years ago for this vid from today, 12/26/23. Seems like only yesterday, ... or the day before. Richard
One of the funkiest group on the planet. Miss drummer Zygaboo Modeliest
Sorry but it's Zigaboo Modeliste
Was not expecting Jimmy Buffet to come out lmao
Straight fire 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This show is from 1990. 4/28/90, to be exact.......

Thanks for posting!!!!
this vid still smokes after 30 years....
Leo plays a killer set, damn
Damn ... Oh damn ... I was at Jazzfest that year. And missed this set. Amazing.
They also did a reunion set at Jazzfest 2005, I think Monck Music recorded it.
Great show! I was out there in the crowd somewhere.
Leo is killing it!
they're all killing it ;-)
Starcaster!
Dude can shred.

Its Zigaboo Linear playing , theres more room for everyone else .
I saw The Meters in Tokyo in 1993 and it was this lineup. Fortunately, I got to see them again with Zig in 2005.
Why did Leo quit?
Batiste got some modern chops and would work on some funky-ass King Crimson type shit, but Zig just fuckin grooved like nobody else- syncopation station.

#RIP Russ!!!
Incredible band . That’s preachin
Im just guessing but James Brown and The Meters are the most sampled in Hip Hop.
Definitely on point. Only other band that's just as close is P Funk.
Badass.
Leo is a legend !!!!!
Aí é som de primeira
Leo gone a bit rogue (you can see in Art's eye contact) but nothing stands between Funk and The Meters. They are the best band every made.
right on...
Ah, but that's not Zig on drums. David Russell Batiste. He's great, but nobody is Zigaboo Modeliste.
Thanks for that! He jumped right out of the mix_ Ive read the name now I'll find some more of his. And yeah, Zigaboo is the bomb.
Good video

Ah huh That's Funky, that shit right there.
@TheChoke77 Any chance do you have Dr John's set from the Jazz Fest should have been on this stage too. It was posted but taken down. Thank you.
Glad they finally called Russel Battiste out. I knew that wasn't Zig
He looks so young here
solid
Saw dem at Ozark Music Festival in 74. They made a impression on I n I...didn't realize the greatness ....
The camera work is so bad, it's hard to watch.
where did the funk go???
Hot like the hottest chili❤
Much heavier guitar sound than on their records. They really let it loose here
That Fender Coranado sounds dope!
