      @@shrapnel77actually most if not all teenagers do think that way. then they grow into bitter and disappointed adults. teenege years striving for individuality is basically a long string of acts of rejection of becoming an individual - joining subcultures where everybody looks and behaves the same, all subcultures are xenophobic towards others subcultures and the "world of normals". those who for whatever reason do not fit in are mocked as "losers". there's no difference between choosing being a gang member or choosing to rather add another brick to the wall separating small xenophobic community of inbreed families from the outside world over the chance of personal growth and temporary loneliness it brings as one's own community resentiment towards an individual would set in. the guy is typical teenager addicted to his toxic social environment - perfect material for a frustrated racist adult.

Probably something along the lines of “Is success worth it, if it comes at the cost of family/personal relationships?” The patient would love to be a successful doctor, but he also loves his family and enjoys spending time with them. He knows choosing one means giving up the other. He’s choosing family and I can respect that decision.

    For anyone wondering, House is in a wheel chair this episode because his parking spot was given to another doctor who was actually forced to be in a wheel chair. Thus, House makes a bet with Cuddy that if he can spend about a week in a wheel chair, he gets his spot back. He does lose as he gets up to save the patients life but does use guilt and manipulation on Cuddy to still get it back in the end.

    Ugh this one hurt my heart so bad. He was such an intelligent young man, who would’ve gone very far in his medical career! Such a shame he wasn’t allowed to pursue that. I get it though. My paternal grandmother was Romani, it was a hard life for her. Very different culture & upbringing. Filled with disappointments.

    • @crow_feather
      @crow_feather 3 месяца назад +5

      Honest question...do you feel that the Romani were portrayed realistically and respectfully here? It felt to me like they were being painted as outdated and old fashioned, stuck in their ways, and actively hurting their son because of their beliefs. Plus, given the parents' treatment of the non-Romani women, I felt like they were being painted as sexist, as well. All of this felt incredibly disrespectful to me, as I couldn't help but think that, surely, in real life Romani are regular people, just like everyone else, and wouldn't all act this way. Their portrayal felt very stereotyped to me as a result. I usually love House, but I was honestly uncomfortable watching this clip as a result of this. But, maybe it's me that's not understanding, and has learning to do. After all, I admittedly know nothing about Romani culture, and maybe it's my thinking that's limited. So, hence, my asking about how you felt about their portrayal here.

      @@stephengrant4841 I never said anything about them being "faultless and innocent." Nobody is. That's part of being human! You're not faultless and innocent either, and neither am I! To put it bluntly, to say that "there's a reason that people hate Romani," is a really callously racist, stereotyping thing to say, as if all Romani are alike, and they're all terrible people, when that's of course not true! Just as it would be awful, and blatantly racist to say, for instance, that there's a reason that all people hate Black people, the same holds true for saying something that terrible about the Romani! I would add, too, that it's especially insensitive to say something that horrible about the OP's grandmother, who's a part of the very group you're saying something so horrible about. I'm sure she was an incredibly sweet, truly wonderful woman! Besides, it's simply not true, anyway. I've known Romani who have been wonderful people, and have never met anyone who hates them! That's an awful thing to say! The reality is that no two people are alike, there will always be differences between person, to person, including having a wide variety of beliefs regarding traditions and customs. I really hope that someday, you can learn to accept people on a case by case basis, rather than stereotype them by lumping them all into one group and really pretty hurtfullly and ignorantly say that they're all one and the same, and deserve to be hated! That really is an awful thing to say, especially about someone's grandmother! Anyway, given that I came here to really show love, respect, and openness to the OP and am very pointedly not wanting to fall into the very sort of, racist stereotyping that you're showing, I'm going to wish you a good night, and end my conversation with you. I came here to be open to the OP and what she has to say on the matter. It is her grandmother's culture after all. It's only right for her to speak for herself on the matter. I do hope that you can learn to be more open and accepting of others. Take care.

      "Western" education is not about belief, it's about knowledge. Knowledge of how, for example, local government or business operate, how your own body functions, etc. etc. . Rom kids are not being taught how to survive in anything but their insular world. Same for the Amish or Hasidic Jews.

    I was a middle child, but i was the only one my mother "accepted" because i was everything she wanted me to be, quiet, obedient, useful. I gave up on all my dreams and became an empty shell ready to be whatever she wanted me to be, counselor, carpenter, coworker. Never again.
