Ektachrome100 | Why This Became My Favorite Film For Street Photography

- I made a few noob errors when I shot Kodak Ektachrome100 for the first time a couple years back in Hong Kong. But this film became my favorite film for street photography because of how it renders colors and contrast.
I am not an analog photography expert, so don't expect this to be a review of ektachrome100 in that sense - it's more of a review of the photos I took, and what I learned from shooting this film and why I love it so much for street photography.

Finally someone who does NOT edit HDR style. In ny opinion low dynamic range film photos look so much “better” when doing street photography.

I'm going to be honest that shot at 2:31 looks so good with the slight burn to the edge. It adds unique character.

About slide film: Slide film is designed, at least originally, to be projected. The film is mounted in a special sleeve, called a slide. It's called a slide because mounted film slides into the projector for viewing. You can often find slide projectors on Ebay for very little money (at least the last time I looked for one they didn't cost very much but prices on everything are going up), and projection screens of various kinds are still available for digital projectors. I'd definitely recommend getting one, your photos should look breathtaking on the big screen.
(That said, there is one caveat. Viewing slides for an excessive period of time can cause fading. I have never personally experienced any noticeable fading myself, perhaps because I was warned not to keep them up there for excessive periods of time, or maybe because newer films are more resilient than older ones, but you should be aware of the risk.)
Have shot film a lot and ran into similar problem where the film gets pulled completely out of its cannister. Normal loading & tension should prevent the film from being pulled to one side of the camera. Sometimes there is too much tension between cannister and film advance. Ektachrome is a color reversal film (color slides). Advantage here is fine detail and better imaging under low light than color print film. Color print film is less forgiving of underexposure than color reversal film. Hence the latter better suited for street photography under low lighting. If you are in HK, there are so many street scenes, moods and human interest to capture. Good job for starter roll of color reversal.

Very nice shots. As someone who purchased a Canon AE-1 (all black. $20 extra for that) brand new waaaay back when (my first camera), I was pleased to see that equipment choice. BTW - mine still works perfectly. I share your preference for photos in lower light, they are more dramatic IMO. My sweet spot time is when the indoor lighting and the sky are about the same brightness, about a half hour in the morning and at night 😥🙄😕. You make anything work by being creative though 😀.

Nice. Slide film always benefits from slight underexposure. You could try Provia. Alas, there's no more Kodachrome. That's why digital becomes so boring - everything is too perfect - especially with dynamic range. It leaves nothing to the imagination. I'm not sure if there are any 3200 colour slide films anymore for night photography.
People seem to have loved kodachrome, maybe there's hope it'll be brought back some day
My guess is that you didn’t toggle the feature that allows the sprockets to free spin (and thus spin backwards) and then you went to rewind. With the sprockets locked out in the advance direction I’m guessing you tugged and ripped the film from the spool in the canister. That would explain why it was so tightly wound up on the take up spool.
I've shot with film for a year now and so far I really like Cinestill 800T and Lomography CN 800 for night shots. Some photos are pretty surprising, though, as I always shoot handheld. Nice video! Hope you do more videos like this.
Tried cinestill a few times but was never really happy with it, lomography800 is something I never even heard of though, will have to try it out!

I’ve shot CineStill 800t a couple of times and like it a lot. But I remember the first time I shot it, all the photos sucked because I shot it during BLUE hour in July 😒😳 you can imagine the results... everything was flat and blue 😅😂
@@talkdatrue I just never really liked the green look that it gives in night photos, but I need to try it again in a place that isn't Hong Kong because it may just not really suit that city

Hoo I didn't know you were also shooting film. Since I bought my Contax G1 5 months ago, i shoot only film in daylight haha, also bought a Olympus XA 2 weeks ago, full frame in my pocket everytime I go out :)
It also funny to see that you underexposed your shot where everybody are tempted to overexpose. But your photos are great and really fit your style! 👌

The underexposing is definitely situational! Doesn't always work but fun to experiment.

@@teemu.mp4 • I know it’s super niche. But it’s basically a KODAK VISION3 for 35MM (you have to send it back to them so they can develop it and they send you the scans) check it out it’s insane.. colors and everything it really gives you that Cinematic feel.

I've got a film camera but accidentally destroyed my first roll by winding it too much and it tore the film inside :(
I'll get back to it when I'm more confident on the field haha

Nice job asking the lab... same thing happened to me with my first roll of Fuji Pro 400H and I just assumed it was done for and threw it out.
Ah, shame. Do you know what causes this? I remember asking the lab what I did wrong but I forgot what they said the reason was. 🤦♂️
@@teemu.mp4 I'm not sure exactly, but I was using an old Mamiya Sekor 500DTL. My best guess was I was rewinding the film the wrong way and forced it out of the canister. It was my second roll ever, and I hadn't shot a roll of film in 2 years at that point... probably should have research how to rewind the film on that camera again... 🙇♂️

The issue with film happens if at last shot you wind without gentle touch. You just cranked it hardly and teared the film apart. I have made this mistake once as well so I took the roll out at film lab. They had a dark box (where you put a camera and empty black film case inside and you have black gloves that are not letting light through which are fixed to box) which allows you to open the camera and take the film out.

Whst i realise with slides is that the final resolt is exectly whst i have in my head , i mostly shoot 6x7 VISION 3 50D , it have by far the best dynamic range posible becous its flat , then in post procesing you can do whatever you want with it , but the thing is i always aim to this very contrasty look , now if the situation you take a pictur from is very contrasy then you better have a flat film to recover shadows and higelights but many situations are not so contrasty in real life so when you use slides wich have low dynamic range , like 3.5 stops max then the film make the situation looks contrasy and it almost always falls im the place wher i want it , with the Vision 3 i do alot of aditing and get unbelivable resolts bt with slides i almost dont do nothing and still get the same look
You didn't mention this. Got it that you under-exposed by one stop, but what you didn';t say - was development pulled by one stop, or was it noirmal development? BTW Ektachrome benefits from a warming filter.

With the film going for about 20 US$ per 25mm roll hear, I doubt I will try it out anytime soon. ^^

It was all f1.8 with shutter speeds below 1/100th usually, kinda dark with iso100 rated film
