I lost my older brother to alcoholism,He gave me the love of song,He took in anyone needing a place to stay,To those who knew Tom, We miss you , it’s been years. And I will never stop missing him
My mom passed away from aspiration pneumonia one week ago. She was only 57, but she was a proud Irish woman. Yesterday this played at her funeral in Toronto. What a moment it was. ❤️
@ Lacey Sorry to hear of your wonderful moms passing. Way too young to go! I'm an Irish guy and I lived in T.O. for a couple of years and was blown away with how amazing the Irish community is there. Such comraderie in the community. I loved Canadians.
I was born in Carrickfergus. Have lived in several countries since. My lovely, lovely soul mate lives only 10 miles away but haven’t seen him since mid December due to lockdown. Miss him.
Van the man, during a tv interview said he did also! During the songs recording. He said he has a tough time getting thru it. God bless him. He's huan, after all eh?
Best version ever. Van Morrison captures the angst and sadness of the song. The loneliness felt by a broken man and the expectation of dying in drunken stupor.
This song was played @JFK's, JFK.jr's, Diana's, Elvis, and many others funeral, if you have a drop of Irish Blood/Heart you probably be basket case by it's finish, I am
With this song I remember a guy which used to life across our street. His name was Roel. He had a pub near the water and on summer days he always played this song. The music was so loud that the whole street could enjoy this beautiful song. unfortunately he died at a young age at cancer. I will never forget his smile when he played this song. RIP.
While "Van the Man" is not happy with the music industry and doubtless was cut off at the pass financially by many an industry shark, we are blessed by Van's passion, soul, poetic writings, an his incomparable musical genius!
I've heard from a number of people that he is unpleasant to everyone he is not actually making music with so at least they have to suffer his...seems beyond annoyed. Even back in " the day", lots of groupies wouldn't even ball him. That cracks me up, Van grumbling around and everyone else having orgiastic frenzies.
Reading the comments, it seems no one has noticed that this fine rendition by Van the Man is accompanied by one of Ireland's finest folk bands: The Chieftains. "But I'll sing no more now - 'til I get a drink!"
I can tell you, that I thought about it many times, its for this, to me its a jewel, its puré Irish music, not only for the artists, the best in ireland, but for the songs that they chosen to interpreta, it get out the best and the wors of me
Have a Guiness...sip a whiskey...close your eyes....as they may get misty and you will be melancholic...Happy St Patrick's Day and thank you Van and the Chieftains.
It is possible, I say preferable, to have come through the wars and emerged sober. Believe me when I tell you, other than a little adaptation to not have the drink, you can lay down your head and weep like a proper Irishman and remember it all. Far less puking too, and you can make many best friends by sharing out your wee drams. They are temporary, but when they tip over find another.
This group were locals at the Irish Mist in Seal Beach, CA. I purchased their CD on the way out. I listened today on my my NAD receiver and I truly understood how great they are. Especially KarrickFurgus made me cry. God Bless the Irish.
The movie "Belfast" was achingly tough to watch as well. This song came on at just the right moment, in it. A young confused boy, in broken Belfast, wondering if his daddy's coming home. " You coming back daddy?" I could no longer hold back the tears.
this song relates so much too me ,but never mind me , today the person that brought this song to my attention and the stories they lived the love they share , said good bye too there amazing daughter and a mother, grandmother and a blooming great friend ,Thinking of you now Nettie x Rest well x.
I mis my Paddy who sadly passed away during the 1st Covid lockdown. I could not attend his funeral. I am from the Netherlands. For more than 25 years we were best friends he was my safe place when i got my heart broken.. again. It wasnt till 12th January 2019 we finally realised we were more than friends. But Covid happened and all the contractors had to leave the Netherlands and go back home. He always called one place home all the other places were like house or hotel Belfast was home.....on the 12 th july 2020 my gorgeous man, my best friend my partner in crime. Silently passed away in a eternal sleep. Im grateful that i was his last forever love. Im so proud of him the person he was. Rest easy my beautiful, gorgeous love of my life. Never forgotten always so close to my heart. Forever locked away in my Soul.💚💚💚 ☘️ Irish songs always heals my soul☘️
@unterwant I didn't say anything about Wales. I said hes from Belfast. If you look at reply from Marsh Grant made 3 years ago they state Hes Welsh. Sorry but being from same part of world Van Morrison I know Belfast is not situated in Wales (Not at all !!!) 🤣

This song makes me think of my grandparents who both sadly passed away last year. I cry tears of happiness though because I had so many wonderful and happy memories of them. R.I.P. x
Carrickfergus is one of my top favs. Only problem I have with it is it brings back sad memories and the urge to get a drink "But I'll sing no more 'til I get a drink." Who else has printed off Van's lyrics to this & sings along? In time I'll have it all by heart, pauses and all.

Lost the love of my life . A carrickfergus girl loved her then love her now . Sadly we couldn't make it last
for the ones who stayed, for the ones who left, for the ones who were lost.
For all our glorious dead
I was born in Carrickfergus. Have lived in several countries since.

I make it to about 45 seconds before my eyes start to water. Most beautiful ballad of all time.

We Irish are not known for our even temperaments. Hearts of gold usually underneath, though. 😉
The one and only. No one sings like Van.
