Every time I hear Van sing this version of Shenandoah I truly understand why my lovely husband of 50years wishes it be played at his memorial service someday...the story has so much to tell that few may take in...♥️

He's got the most elastic voice. His voice expands from his diaphragm. Many other contemporary vocalists cannot expand their voice, and they convey emotion thru loud shouting.

This song was first written about the Missouri River and Chief Shenandoah of the Iroquois Indians of upstate NY, and was first sung by Canadian fur trappers. In recent years, claims to its 'traditional' history have been made by people in Virginia who want it to be about the Shenandoah Valley. Which it never was.
@@nctpti2073 It’s from the documentary The Irish in America: The Long Journey Home. Irish have settled America from East to West, & this song is about journeying.
Love this man ,as far as the critics on here Why don't u listen to the vocals of Johnny Mathis. Mathis is incredible on this song. However as far as a musician and Songwriter l prefer Van, and love ❤️ his voice on most songs.
No way, Mathis murders the song. Mathis is like Perry Como he merely sings the song whereas Van Morrison feels it and expresses it from the depth of his soul
I love Van the man but this is not a good version of a great song. Sorry. There is a version blend of Tennessee Earnie Ford (long dead) and Norwegian Sisse that knocks this one for 6.
Going against all of the hysterical fanboys I have never rated this guy's singing , just a shouter , anything that requires clear controlled vocals and he is all at sea , I think the general opinions of his ability have a smack of the fairy tail Kings new clothes about it , or loud applause and all the wannabes just echo what they think they should say, the guy just is not in any way a great singer , maybe a fine shouting voice but little else, with that I await the usual howl of abuse for daring to designate a sacred cow.
@Wendy Joseph Van recorded this YEARS ago for the Sountrack to the PBS Documentary series "The Long Journey Home - the Irish in America". First of all - if you like traditional Irish music, with a touch of Americana, I HIGHLY recommend the CD or upload. Van does this piece with the Chieftains and a Gospel Choir from Toronto (shout out to my peeps 🇨🇦) which is beautiful. Other artists on the CD include Vince Gill, Sinead O'Connor, etc., but there are other pieces on this CD ( I've practically worn the coding off my copy, I've played it so much) which are tremendous. Also, the PBS series is, or was, up on RUclips and is well worth watching.
I don't know what you sycophants are hearing. He ripped this song to pieces and stuck it back together with sticky type. Just yapped it out incoherently and didn't sing the half of it. Horrible, horrible, horrible. Liam Clancy does the best version ever recorded.

DREAMS COME TRUE …THANKS VAN
I remember reading about this, never knew I would actually watch it 20+ years later.
Beautiful. Thank you Van and Chieftains ❤️💚🍀

No surprise that Van Morrison can take such a timeless piece of Music and raise the vibration about 7 octaves! Beautiful as always VM
Love this version of the song. The Irish flutes give it a haunting sound.
More harp would be great too
Beautiful presentation! I close my eyes and transport myself, feeling present in this wonderful moment. Thank you for sharing!👏👏🙌❤️
SUCH A GREAT ARTISTIC INTERPRETATION.OF A WONDERFUL.CLASSIC SONG BY THE VERY VERSATILE VAN MORRISON.

I learned this song when I was a child in our local church choir but I didn't understand its meaning until Van showed me.
Great song and perfect cover. Brilliant and perfect pairing of the chieftains and van! Irish in America was a very good PBS documentary
Sir George Ivan the greatest vocalist ever!
Unbelievable for poor Lisa RIP baby from Seamus
Unbelievably beautiful
This is so sublime!
A smile !!! Thanks Van......a musical genius for over five decades....
A GREAT CLASSIC SONG--- SUNG VERY ARTISTICALLY BY THE EVER BRILLIANT VAN MORRISON TO THE MAGNIFICENT MUSIC OF THE MASTER MUSICIANS " THE CHIEFTAINS"
I've loved seeing you in concert and am hoping you come back to Yorkshire soon.❤
Van barely lifts his pinky and this gem of a tune comes together.
He growls and expands his vocals , making it look effortless.
Beautiful 🙏
So sweet! Love it!❤
Beautiful ☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️❤️❤️❤️🕊
The growl, the way his voice expands, it moves me.
Me too he uses his voice like a musical instrument it's wonderful.

Goose bumps every time 😢
Ah... the combo, Chieftans AND Van The Man 🥰🙏🏻

God bless the Chieftains

I recently saw a video of the Shenandoah area.A statue of liberty was seen in a front garden of a house nearby. Maybe they were reclaiming?
Not sure what in blazes this song has to do with the Irish, either.
"O, Shenandoah, I long to hear you,
Away you rolling river.
Across that wide and rolling river."
Ah-ha, I'm bound away, 'Cross the wide Missouri.

Johnny Mathis wins the vocals on this song. I have seen him 9 times and he
Is still incredible in his eighties.

@@TelecasterLPGTopBut Johnny Mathis was in his seventies when he sang this.Listen to some of his earlier albums you might change your mind about him.
