Bumped into him in a hotel bar in Belfast in the early hours of the morning . He sat quietly in the corner . The barman warned us not to approach him and appreciate he likes his privacy. We were the only ones in the bar and sat drinking for a while eventually he acknowledged us with a head nod as he went to his room.
Nice story - I wonder what would have happened if you'd offered to buy him a drink? Saw him last year in London, but missed half of his concert because he started so early - 8pm! These older artists need their beauty sleep...😆
Have heard a couple of stories about him (I'm from Belfast) but he had a friend a very ordinary guy in Belfast who told me Van always sent him post card from some of the different countries he was doing a gig in, and would regularly keep in touch!!
Mr. Morrison had a song called In the Back Room while with Them and it is The Ultimo Bump and Grind ditty . I remember Him buying his folks a record store in FairfaX kin the 70s. I have always respected that and lastly the only performance that I ever attended was in the early 70s at a recording studio in San Francisco during The Moondance era. The way Janet Planet looked at/watched Him was truly wonderful, I remember it as being True Love. Too Long in Exile is a Very Good record and Moondance is The Best. Good Luck Mr. Morrison.Bruce Spiegelman
Van is a unique blend of that Scots /Irish genius, In all his interviews he comes across as a very blunt but very honest and humble Ulster man. I listened to his early songs like Cleaning Windows and Here Comes The Night and i still think they are great songs.
I could not have said that better. He has been my enduring companion through life, I swayed with him in the kitchen when my babies were growing and now they play his music and please me profoundly with their love for him.
I enjoy all Van's music and played 'someone like you' in my marriage video compelation. His music is thoughtful, timeless, and his words are etched in the minds of those who listen to his music. He is one of the Masters of words in Song!
Van was totally right about covid of course, God bless him and Eric Clapton for their stance. Van has been such an important artist and huge part of my life for decades, I would say he's second only to the Beatles for me.
I just saw him at Stanford. Wow!! He played Gloria and like only he can do, left while the band kept jamming. Absolutely brilliant. My checks were shimmering!!!❤
Except for a brief break in the 70’s, Van has been releasing music consistently for almost 50 years. He’s released music at a phenomenal rate in the past 15 years. Eclipsing his peers many times over. A formidable, individualist.
I have loved his music for decades and have seen him live many times. He was utterly sublime once, superb on a couple of occasions and rather mediocre and contemptuous on the remainder. Flawed genius.
I saw him in Aberystwyth once. He must have been depressed that day. His stance on the plandemic made more up for it. The man is a hero. When no one dared to speak up he had the balls!
Love this man! Have almost every CD he has ever recorded. In the 80's and 90's he didn't tour the south so much and I thought I would never get the opportunity to see him. I thought if I ever got to see him, I would die right then and there. However, a chance to hear him in Atlanta did not disappoint. He was wonderful and I still live on to play and enjoy his music. Strange he has a daughter with the same name as my daughter. Rock on Van.
I really dig Van Morrison; however, need to point out an error in the "Early Lifer" segment of this video. The man shown at 1:13 - 1:17 in video and described as described as Van's father, George Morrison, "a shipyard worker", at the 1:13 - 1:19 in the video, is actually George Morrison, the Native American abstract artist from the Ojibwe tribe in Minnesota. Can't believe the producer(s) didn't catch that.
Van Morrison is all about music and this video failed to get that across as it concentrated on a soulless narrative of facts without audio performance clips.
It was ill-informed and dangerous. His desire to make money by gathering people together whilst people were dying in an infectious pandemic was shameful.
My friend's brother has a stammer. Being a fan of Van Morrison, it kicked in when he met him by chance. Van's response ? " F-F-F-F- F*** off ! That's who Van is
Okay documentary bit surface. Apparently his affair with his manager resulted in a son who apparently tragically died and so did his mother. Amazing music and soul he channels all his spiritual energy into his music doesn’t seem to have any left for his fans. Used to see him walking around Bath when he lived here.
You missed the time the pre them band the Gamblers and the Maritime hotel time and Spanish rooms in Belfast where they played to packed crowds every week. I was also at Thems last NI gig before they headed to the US.and history.
Was told that once during a performance in Australia Van turned his back to the crown for nearly one hour - have checked online and I find nothing to corroborate this. Sounds gross - anyone heard this?
@@jazztheglass6139 Interesting! I have seen Van live a couple of times, excellent always great world class backing vocals, instrumental, a bit like Leonard Cohen. But unlike Cohen, not much personality displayed. Still one of the greats and his recent stuff is first rate..
Saw him in a concert in Grosvenor Park Chester in the late 80's or possibly early 90's. People were talking throughout his set, and he got quite annoyed and told the audience as much. He's never been my cup of tea. Too miserable.
I’m 82. I was an AVID Van fan until we made our last trip to Ireland/Northern Ireland. The highlight of our trip was Van’s concert in The Botanical Gardens . Van walked out, sang, left the stage. That was it. Not a word was spoken to the audience. The whole thing had a, “kiss-my-ass” attitude about it.

Some people I know go and was a bad concert, didn't play any of the knew songs and he's very old.. I'm not nostalgic, saw hundreds of concerts at the right time, I avoid to see mummies.. And as a pro he didn't respect the audience who go there to ear some of the old and know songs.. Not the times of The Last Waltz... I'm a Stones fan, saw them first time in 1982, and after 1990 lot concerts.. The last was in 2015 in Rock in Rio.. Close the book.
Not the best looking guy these days, but he used to have a very good voice. He looks a tad debauched with that woman on his arm, not a great look really.
With all the time spent on this doing a fairly decent overview of Van, why go so amateurish and cheesy on the narration.? This must be an AI- generated voice. No halfway intelligent real human would pronounce Leadbelly as “Leedbelly” instead of “Ledbelly. ”..and the house he lives in is valued at “ 4 thousand twenty-seven million dollars “ ? WHAT? I’ve been to my share of concerts over the years, some good, some just ok. Van’s show was long and one of my top 3 of all time. One I remember best, Wolf Trap in Virginia. 1993 I think. He is definitely a legend.
Apparently Sade plucked up the courage to approach him, saying how much she loved his work and a what great influence he had been, to which he replied “Wish I could say the same” and walked off.
