Best version of this song to date. I send to anyone I know who is Irish. It always gets an amazing reception. This history of the ballad is long and tells a great story. I just got back from Northen Ireland and listened to Allison singing Carrickfergus every day!
Here l sit almost 90 Korean War vet hard as nail they say with tears in my eyes listing to this song reminds me of my late wife who I met when I return home in 1952 after completing my deployment. Such a butifully done song
I will never understand why this lady did not achieve greater fame. She beats any female country singer hands down. Her album/DVD "Show" are not to be missed.
I have loved Allison's singing for many years. This song is the ultimate testament to how amazing she is as a vocalist and interpreter of music. You can feel the years of hardship she has endured since she was a young girl coming through in her interpretation of this classic Irish ballad. I have listened to every version of this song that I can find and I cannot find one that even comes close to her performance. I will forever be in awe of her immense talent.
The only thing that could have improved this rendition would be cinematic costuming and make up to present her as having her "day's numbered." She is in full throated vitality, strength, beauty and youth here. Tamper with that dissonance for the illusion.
One of the saddest and most nostalgic of all the millions of love songs that have ever been written. The choices we make and then have to live with, the roads that lead to nothing, the loss of money, energy, self- belief, hope as time goes by. Everything is here. My heart cracks and shatters each time I hear it, as if it were my own story.
Damn I'm a 75 year old Nam combat paratrooper vet and that wee bit o Irish in me started to get misty eyed. Absolutely loved this video and her voice is beyond mere words.
Hey you Allison Moorer I love this song I have never cried till I watched you sing it and now every time I watch you sing I cry you have a wonderful voice and you sing with so much feeling, you are beautiful lots of love Kinnon.
I agree with all previous comments. What a version of one beautiful song. You can sense that these experienced musicians just know that they are in the company of greatness. Thank you to all concerned. This is a wee gem.
What kind of magic is this !? I’m only fifth generation Irish descent but on both sides of my bloodline but this song has reached into my British body and mind an straight through to my Irish heart and soul, and I am once again approaching 🚢 Larne for the first time 1978 looking f the greenest grass I’d ever seen, I knew I was home. I know I must go back there one day but will it destroy a beautiful memory, the people, the crack and beauty I left behind 🥰 I was 18 remember I was young and my whole life ahead and settling down was an option for a free traveling man / boy. Loosing those memories I think that’s what I’m afraid of? ❤️😂
She isn’t mainstream in America, so sad because sometimes/and/or what sells is crap compared to this. Btw my husband and I are proud of our Irish/Scottish heritage!! McNabb’s and Walsh in the house!
Ballygrant and Kilmeny are actually located on the inner Hebrides island of Islay, part of Scotland. For some reason the writer of the songs lyrics changed Kilmeny to Kilkenny. Kilmeny does have a stone quarry that is mined for black stones, especially for gravestones.
@@stacywalsh4248, Thank God, there are still some relatively Young, Talented Musicians ( not everyone can be An Author, Autistic-Child Mother, Musician, Singer-Songwriter and Superb Vocalist like Ms. Moorer ). BUT, these 'Authentic Talented Artists' are difficult to locate, because BIG $$'s Bucks Music can Not maximize the Profits via Cookie-Cutter Marketing ! No Talent Wanna-Be's with Melodic Analysis & Auto-Tune can easily be Marketed to make BILLIONS !! Big Sis, Shelby Lynn is a fair Talent herself. In definite agreement Ms. Walsh... what is out there is 99.999% CRAP.
One of those truly magic moments in music when the stars are all aligned, everyone rises to the very top of their game and something outstanding happens. Take Allison's tragic family history, have her sing an Irish lament and hang on. She just about breaks down a couple of times and at 3:58 you can see Jerry Douglas encouraging her to keep it together. MAGIC!!!
The ultimate version of Carrickfergus by Allison moorer I felt emotional all the way through this version it tugs so much at the heart strings and soul so much. Even the magnificent musicians looked a bit choked up well thanks Allison for making a grown man cry-magnificent.
I did just that last night and my good friend who is a fabulous musician in his own right almost immediately burst into tears at the beauty of Allison the song and the musicianship.
I fell cross this song with Charlotte Church singing it, such a beautiful song, now I keep searching for other renditions of this song and Allison does a fantastic job with so much emotion.
This is stunning beautifully sung by ALLISON MOORER and played by the musicians, a deeply sad song about hard times and starvation during the potato famine time in Ireland when grain, other foods and livestock were being shipped over to the good UK, yes the Irish were stolen from by their nearest neighbor a so-called superpower during the worst of times. Not much has changed, similar brutality is now been carried out in the Holy Land at this time and in other places in our world. Jesus and his blessed mother Mary weep for those starving people who are been bombed and shot at and driven from, their homes with nowhere to go, attached by their nearest neighbor a so-called superpower
When I was a young man over 50 years ago now , a beautiful welsh girl called Wendy, who we all called Blodwin used to sing this to me over the phone. Never forget the times and memories of your youth, Mike Sheehan
They are wonderful indeed. Wonderful voice. What other song can capture the soul of ireland so? It deserves such musicians and voice as these. The ultimate rendition . . the ethereal Orla and her harp. Celtic Woman.
l have always thought that the late Jim McCann' s was my preferred version, but l have to say that Allison Moorer's rendering of 'Carrickfergus' is excellent. To be fair though, with the accompanying of the top musicians she had with her, does make a difference, but she has a wonderful voice.
WOW!!! What a magnificent voice! I love this great Irish balad and have heard many versions. This is one of the best. Thanks for uploading...Beautiful.
When i heard Allison Moorer's song especially this Carrickfergus, i could imagined the old castle in Ireland and and have mistaken of my memory that I have been there a long time ago with my children n sweeem there a long time ago... Of course I never have been there, only found the photo from internet.. But it's coming from her amazing voice and expression.. Really amazing voice! !!!!
I love this song and have listened to many great singers performing it, but I'm not going to bother with any of those versions any more. None of them even come CLOSE to this. This is the most spectacular version ever. This singer and these musicians are stupendous. I'm stunned.

\it's not fair to her talent
Agree one hundred percent!
In this she was singing the way Ally Bain wanted, thats why its so good. On her own she sings all the wrong songs.
I can't understand it either.
Truth! She’s so talented!!
Alison moorer is the best authentic female country singer songwriter.I have been a fan since 97-
absolutely!

Truly a beautiful rendition of this beautiful Irish ballad.

Such a beautiful, clear, perfectly pitched voice, with some of the world’s best musicians backing her up.

London Wainwright III also does a classic version . . .
Allison sang this with so much emotion..she made it her own!
First time for me for this version, tears for me I'm afraid, brilliant.
Right?!
Allison Moorer really nails this beautifully sad Celtic folk song. You should do more folk, Allison. Your voice has tremendous feeling.
Breath taking performance!!!!
So haunting ! I`m afraid to listen again , the last time I was haunted for weeks ! Wonderful !
You will rarely see a more passionate performance of any song by any artist....ever.

This WONDERFUL singing - totally amazing. Allison Moorer you nailed this !
Best version of great Irish Ballad. Great performance from my cousin.
Stunning rendition, her vocal range and crisp diction are gorgeous.
that crisp diction reminds me of Gene Pitney another one who forms his words
Fantastic voice and passion in her performance brilliant XX
Never heard of her and only know the song because of Boardwalk Empire but oh my god I just fell in love
She’s an under-rated American artist, because she isn’t mainstream..a true American artist! ❤️🎶🇺🇸
Absolutely beautiful,
It put tears in my eyes 💦

When I want something special for my friends to listen, I put this song and they listen with mouth open. Greetings from croatian mob.

Stunning delivery of this tune!
What an incredible set of pipes. Absolutely wonderful singing and the band was right there with her in this song.
After hearing the song in Boardwalk Empire, I found this rendition. Emotional.
I kept this video when it first appeared on BBC transatlantic programme a few years ago, and i still love it even more now!
I don't know whether to write or cry. From Brazil!

First Time I have heard it, Beautiful, my dad came from here and it bought back memories, passed some 23 years ago and I still miss him.
I can't listen to this song without dissolving into tears.
Magnificent!
Wonderful backing by all the band and one of the best vocal performances I've ever heard.
The musicians, that voice...How had I missed the version? Truly above the best Allison!
The Irish Rovers are the musician backing her in this video.
Just one word ''MAGICAL''

My fav song sung so beautifully and passionately by Allison. Aly Bain on fiddle I believe?
Yes indeed.
it's from the annual Transatlantic Sessions
@@TheZimmy7 My favourite music series ever. With the King of the Dobro, Jerry Douglas, adding to the melancholy feel of one of the great Irish songs.
Truly wonderful... thanks for that epic version !!!!!!

My mom has been gone 20 years,,,but this brings me so close to her,,,,,I will see you again mom
It was my Mother's most-beloved song. Heaven holds the faithful departed.
Great singer, great personality, and one of the most beautiful women I ever saw..
Truly a magnificent talent! What a voice! I've not heard this version.

They are wonderful indeed. Wonderful voice. What other song can capture the soul of ireland so? It deserves such musicians and voice as these.

The most beautiful version of a great Irish song. I would love to hear her sing more Irish ballads.
What sentiment! Damn, I'm in love again!
I'm in tears.
Magnificent, what a voice, and boy does she use it to great effect.
Excellent version.. Truly a masterpiece. Thumbs up to Alison.

hehe.......we say that to everyone................probably the worst "over the top" version ever...........pure shite............big in NZ.......
phillip bartholomew where did they say that?
Great and lovely and wonderful. . She apparently loved Van Morrison's version so much that she follows his changes to the lyrics, subtle as they are.
Agreed, both Van Morrison's and she create beautiful renditions...Morrison puts a male spin and she, truly lovely
This is truly the best ever version of this classic Irish Song just came across it today . Mary from Dublin.
Marisse, Allison is so gifted. She is not as celebrated as she should be. One of the best talents out of Nashville.
I agree, it's truly beautiful and of all the versions I've listened to this is by far the best. The back-up musicians and wonderful too. Just perfect.
Loudon Wainwright III's version is perhaps the best I have come across.
Marisse Reynolds wow, isn’t it great to come across a song or version of a song you’ve never heard before, this is so beautiful yet sad.

Love her voice and great background instruments. Awesome combination.
Perfection. I'm so glad Alison Moorer is again making new music. A solid fan since 1998. Thanks to the BBC.
You are 100% right, I've been a fan since 1999.

What an amazing voice! When Allison sings she feels it to her core. What an incredible singer songwriter.
Her voice is amazing. And this IS the best recording of the song I've ever heard. But, Morrer did not write this. It is an old Irish folk tune.
You're in fine voice, Allison, and carry the deep tragedy of this song. Well done.
Magnificent
