- To be successful in medical coding, it's important to have a good understanding of medical terminology & anatomy. You don't need to be a doctor, but you need to speak the language of the industry! I definitely can attest to that. I, too, am 55 years old, a housekeeper at a local hospital, was also a custodian for several years. I will be graduating next month. Although, I'm graduating, I still have concerns.

I was a teen mom, and I have been told since I was 16 that I wasn’t going to be anything. From being beaten down so much I ended up staying as a stay at home mom for almost ten years now. I had some little odd jobs here and there but nothing that is a substantial income. I never heard of a medical coder until this year. (Wish I had sooner but I’m still young!) I am binge watching all of these videos to figure out how I can start and pass! I’m so excited to have these resources!!! Thank you so much for posting this

I don't know you but YOU CAN DO IT. I understand where you're coming from. I have had people try and talk me out of so many different career options but we really just have to ignore their attitudes and not let anything hold us back. I wish I hadn't let people talk me out of things when I was younger but I think anyone can do this if they try hard enough!

@@jaimieliu5706 I did I graduated from the program in August last year. I found one part time job after and it was a HORRIBLE experience. I just found another position I’m potentially getting but just for billing not for coding. It’s extremely challenging to get into this field if you’re only looking for remote work. If you can work in person you may have an easier time, but I kind of regret doing this for school. It’s not very enjoyable honestly

Your videos have been AMAZING and very inspiring! My wife has been in the dental field for two plus decades and will soon be learning medical billing / coding for some new procedures they will be offering through her office. This has inspired me to also look towards the medical coding field as I'm currently a data analyst (in the media world) but seeking more learning and growth opportunities.
I believe both of us have a lot of transferrable skills (attention to detail, charts, analytics, software) to succeed as medical coders and your videos have been great to get us pointed in that direction. Our children and future DIL are all currently in college pursuing becoming a sports medicine doctor and (2) RN's so maybe we'll be working for them one day! Lol. This is great for us seasoned coders who might switch specialties too. I just moved from family practice to vascular, and I am re-reviewing my medical terminology like a newbie!
No joke! I need a refresher for sure! My school was not well-equipped and we basically had a nurse writing terms on a chalkboard, we had to write them down with the definition, and then we took a quiz the next day.
What separates a excellent coder from the rest is a firm understanding of A&P, pathophysiology, terminology, and pharmacology. This understanding helps with getting greater specificity and data capture that ensures claims getting paid and proper data reporting.
I do personal recommend newcomers to at least go for their RHIT (AS degree in Health Information Management [Coding is a part of it]). They cover all these classes. Especially as more and more employers are requiring some form of higher education.
I want to become a medical coder. But where should I look to find employment. Honestly, I think most people were already working in a hospital setting before they found employment.
@@lady33357 Nowadays, as it’s been for some time, most people have to have some type of formal training and/ or education. There are advantages to be employed at a large healthcare organization and applying for your first coding job.
Like any field, coding can be hard to get your first job. I always recommend people to keep persistent, be willing to make sacrifices to get their first coding position, get involved with their local AHIMA and AAPC associations, be willing to take a position to get their foot into an organization, and keep an eye out for apprenticeship positions.
LinkedIn is a good place to search for your first job. Also look in your local and out of state opportunities. More places will hire new coders for remote work.
I’ve been in the game for 15 years. When I first started, it took me over a year to land my first coding job. I heard a lot of “no” answers, before I got my first yes.
Once you get the right amount of experience, you can basically go anywhere.

I received a Quick Study for Medical Terminology through my employer which is a University Hospital. Is this something you've encountered? I have resources to go into coding which is wonderful. I discovered your channel through a search while I was in a course called Learn @ Work through my employer. They didn't mention you but I will definitely tell people about your channel. If I go to school for coding I'm definetly buying that medical terminology for coding book. Thank you for the wonderful content. I will continue to follow and learn from you.
My library was a great resource. A lot more libraries are partnering with online course websites too. I used universal library through my library and they had several medical anatomy and terminology classes for free. Even had a few coding courses as well. Some Even had CEUs for proof of completion.

Thank you so much for your abundance of knowledge in this field and providing helpful tips and links for sources. I see that the Shiland book has a latest 4th edition. Would you recommend the latest version or just sticking with the 3rd edition? Thank you I really appreciate your channel! 💛
The 4th edition has some new infectious disease information, and I haven't checked it out personally but my mind is thinking maybe some new COVID stuff. Get the 4th edition unless the little bit less cost for the 3rd edition is super appealing.

Hi there, just wondering if you think this version is better than Betsy Shiland's Medical Terminology & Anatomy for ICD-10 Coding? The course I'm in does cover ICD-Coding at some point, I'm in an Anatomy and a Med Term class right now, but the material for these classes are all etextbooks and I would like a paper copy while I go thru the course, just as you said- I like the idea of saving some $ to get more than just a medical terminology book. I looked up this book to purchase and saw the other. So I thought before I buy, I should make sure.. thank you for your videos! They have been VERY helpful!

Hi I was on the AAPC website and there is a pre-requisite to take their terminology and anatomy course. So can I just avoid taking the prerequisite course and just learn the terminology by myself, as you suggested. Or if I still enroll in the CPC course can I study terminology simultaneously with the books that you suggested.

There are no hard requirements of any kind to take the CPC exam other than to pay the exam fee. But of course you might not do so well if you don't study. :)

Thank you for this. Can you do a video about how HIPAA applies to a coder with some scenarios? I just started a course and I'm having trouble picturing the coder's involvement and what a coder should be aware of with how they handle medical records and communicate with medical staff. There's a compliance and regulation section but the examples seem to be with nurses, doctors, front desk but not coders.
Maybe you have one already I couldn't find.

This may be off subject but I dont know anywhere else I can get an answer, even google don’t know. I’m studying medical terminology with the AAPC course, as I go through, I find there are sometimes 2+ words or meanings for a certain word, how do you know which one to use & when? IE: nucle/o or kary/o, both mean nucleus. Please help!

Thanks for catching -- I thought I linked the 3rd but will update since 4th edition is a pre-release and won't be out until June.
Actually I stand corrected, it looks like the 4th edition is available now, not sure why it said June last time I looked at it! My guess, though, is that the new edition says it has more infectious disease stuff so maybe it has new covid information in it.
I am looking to enroll in the Medical Coding course thru the AAPC, but I'm hesitant because people are saying that once they graduate, they can't get employed because of the Catch 22 of the required '2 years on the job training'. The counselor said that is why they came up with: "Practicode CPC-A Practicum (This coding practice tool helps to improve coding skills across multiple specialties, allows a new coder to gain coding experience, and removes the A designation of the CPC credential.)" ~ Do you feel that this is a good work-around?
Is there much difference between the third and fourth edition of the book Medical terminology for Coding? even the 3rd edition is expensive second hand. 😢

4th is more updated, but it is slightly more expensive than the 3rd edition.

I love this video,had to watch again.I got approved for paani wanted to get tt but docs assistant said it wouldnt be covered and my code is 15830 and thinking of having her remove my bb to get a tighter look and she said she could cut me higher to remove more skin.Due to covid and lack of beds im on a waiting list so hopefully i can get it done before the end of the year,since i have met my deductible and out of pocket expenses.I wanted to get a breast reduction which i have an app Dec.2nd to get pics and try to get approved.If u have any advice i would appreciate.Im just ready to have closure and get this done.I need to get other procedures done but i wont be able to get done til next,just want to get the most important thats causing me the most pain done first.Thank you!

You can take it by an instructor if you want. Your local colleges and technical schools will offer courses.

In scale of 1-10 how important to learn medical terminology?
Hi there! I am 44 and heading back to college for a certificate in medical billing/coding. I have 15+ years in various healthcare positions. The school I'll be attending does not require a book for their medical terminology course and it uses the Pearsons Anatomy & Physiology book for their Anatomy & Physiology course. Do you think I would benefit from the Shiland book as well? It's expensive so I want to be sure before I invest! Thank you!
Why don't you wait and see if you like the Pearson book and then if it's not working for you, invest in the other one.
My highest score of my cpc was med terms but anatomy was my lowest

I took terminology and anatomy....it was not enough, I think it needs to be much more in-depth then what I took in college.
Thanks for the video. After serving 20+ years in the military and retired a year ago. I obtain a medical coding certificate serving. I would like to begin an another career in coding. What they call "prerequisites" are just recommendations that will make the course easier to understand. It's not a college, you can take the CPC prep without having to purchase their official courses or anyone's official courses.
