Final Fantasy 12 The Zodiac Age Ultima Esper
Ultima is the secret boss / Esper of the Great Crystal. This can be a very challenging encounter due to the multiple changing environment effects (such as no macick, items, attack, teckniks etc..).

Final Fantasy 12 was first released way back in 2006 on the PS2. At the time, it was considered somewhat controversial by many Final Fantasy fans due to its departure from traditional FF gameplay. However, it is now looked back on fondly and many would consider Final Fantasy XII to be the best entry in the franchise. In 2007 the International Zodiac edition was released (in Japan only), and this version of the game included a more traditional job-based system and a new battle areana. For this remastered release, these additional changes are being brought to us fans in the West for the first time ever - along with high resolution textures and remastered soundtrack!

Pheew. Finally found a quick way out after killing Ultima:
Coming from Ultima to the save crystal, take the first exit to the left. It will lead you to waystone XIX. Use it to get to XX. There are six exits from this room, if you include Gate Sagitarius II. If you did NOT open that gate earlier, run DOWN exit #2 to the left of that gate, to find X. (If you DID open that gate, just check the down-going exits till you find the right way - if the waystone is not in the first room you enter, then turn around and check another)
Remember, you're looking for X, *NOT* XI - both are very close. If you found XI, just return, and take first exit to your left.
Using X takes you to IX. Rund down the only exit, and use VIII to get back to Giruvegan.

Level 82 to 85 party made this straightforward, went crazy with the pheonix down's and raise ability with not much stratergy and did it first attempt.
FYI Holy enemies like Ultima are weak to dark magic. Darkga does really nice damage and made this fight a lot easier than it looked watching the video.

Something i tried that helped me a lot is casting decoy on whoever gets the reverse status and letting the boss heal them
Use Zeromus and bubble him and have him fight Ultima. Makes the battle a lot easier. Don’t forget to equip yourself with white mask or Sage rings

want an even easier way to beat this esper? This strategy actually comes down to somewhat cheating, but this is how I killed her by just using ONE character under 2 minutes. I do highly recommend you to have at least 2x Elixirs. Take whichever character that you have Zeromus assigned to and summon him before you actually trigger Ultima. Cast Bubble on Zeromus. When the fight starts, let Zeromus suffer damage a couple of times, then switch characters to Zeromus and do his special attack (Big Bang). The formula or multipliers in Zodiac versions have changed it seems for this ability. As Zeromus in my fight did over 140k damage to Ultima. Then use Elixir, to replenish MP and all bars, summon again, repeat. Done, esper Ultima dead in under 2 minutes, without any gambits, or white robes and masks. She wont be even able to block certain actions or do her special attacks more than twice.

So i went and did a few other things in the story and leveled up a little bit and came back here and took care of business. Thanks FF for the walkthru without it i would have never made it this far
Huh...I don’t remember having any problems with getting this Esper. I remember fighting my way through the fiends was WAY more of a chore then the boss fight. Course, I was over leveled due to trying over and over to find the boss so...yeah! :P
I feel like he doesn't know you can target out of party members with items and spells. 🤔
Ultima was fun to fight. I had Vaan equipped with the Yagyu Darkblade and let him have fun.

Somehow i made it all the way here and dident notice that i ran out of Phoenix Downs damn now i gotta go try to get all the way back thru this maze and buy some and come back
I remember when I first did this I was under leveled at around lvl 40 , the sages ring on Ashe saved me from her holyja ability. So when everyone died from it, ashe would heal everyone while reverse is casted on her so she can’t take damage unless she gets healed
I had famfrit on balthier(white mage) and I used his esper to try to distract ultima while he uses "arise" on his teammates

My lvl 63 character casting darkga pretty much destroyed this boss... getting out was actually wayyy harder than fighting the boss
Finally won but Im gonna have to go back and figure out where to get all the dark stuff because I had none of it. Also Zeromus would have been nice
after i defeat ultima , i'm struggling on finding path to get back :(
Did they make Ultima harder in Zodiac age? I don't remember her spamming Holyja that often in the PS2 version.
Easy fight for me. Balthier with Yagyu dark blade, ash with sages ring to absorb holy with casting darkga, penelo with sages ring also and after casting all the buffs just used shear
Would you say this is the hardest besides zodriak?

Ultima is one major pain in the butt especially if you're fighting her around this level. I found that ranged weapon + esper works best for this fight. The esper will limit the damage to your party.
So did you looted the chest after boss fight? I didn't understood what you said in the last part.
Loot anytime you want... It's Excalibur. But don't think you get to walk off with it until you beat ultima. You die, you lose Excalibur. Good luck.. Lady gamer?
Excalibur with white robes is still extremely busted. Also, take ribbons off for this fight, with the built in regen you're almost surely to die after each Holyja cast
And how do we get back to the top
I have not used an Esper in this game yet. I just get them for the perks and the completion

In this battle i hated so much attack and magic block ;-;
Well i got here and realised i probably couldn't take it with all my characters at level 39, got it to about 20% but then i managed to get my healers killed during the second item block, i'll give it a few more goes and see what happens though
Alright 45 minutes for the next attempt and i got it
How does he only hit you for around 100-200 damage? everytime i hit him he jsut one hits me and my party lol and im level 75 with vaan and 65+ with ashe and fran and also like level 70+ with reddas
F2 Lavenza white mask and reverse i believe.
I feel dumb sometimes when I watch in depth boss walkthroughs cuz I just keep hitting it until it dies 😂 my gameplan is very simple

Are you sure this walkthrough shows how to beat Ultima? She is mopping the floor with you dude! You are about 10 levels under-leveled.

Actually not that bad. Beat him at lvl 51 on all characters. Key word: Faith + Darkga
Same it wasn't that bad if you prepared for it, I had 2 bushi/shikari around lvl 60, 2 White mask+black robes+ yaguyu dark blades+beserk+hermes sandals wrecked her so hard she only got off one holyga towards the end, she didn't even get a chance to reverse me, all those hours RNG manipulating at the cerobi steppes paid off big time lol

My chars are the same lvl with missing skills on all boards, I'm poor, and have only killed what is necessary to speed run the Pharos... absolute easy mode until I reach Subterra when the challenge begins. I must be playing wrong because I just do x4 speed and rush forward until something stops me. The game feels like I level so fast that I my chars are always overpowered. In this fight, I would have just let the weak die and bring in the ones who do damage while using phoenix downs. Seems easier to KO and rise than worry about reverse. I feel like the boss would have been dead ages ago if you didn't stop attacking.
I done this fight on my...Umm...I honestly forgot. Each attempt lasted so long. Maybe trauma of that robot jerk screaming all the time, effected my memories .w.
Maxed out lisence boards, best gear I could get, and countless elixirs, yet this monster just wouldn't die...
Eventually I had to use a simple but creative "Esper healing the summoner while throwing Knots Of Rust" stratgey. This worked *INSANELY WELL.*
It meant only one party member was being knocked out at any one time by her Ultimate Holy attack.
The final 5% or so of her health was *TRUMATIC PANIC FOR SURVIVAL* though...
Gambits are useful and all, but I don't know if I could play through the game like that. I've seen stael gambits that just honestly waste a slot in other videos. Just tell your characters to manually steal until successful.
As for this fight playing on normal speed and just manually controlling the healer/support characters would have probably been more efficient than constantly swapping gambits. If you get the whole party reversed you can hit yourself with an AoE to heal after she casts holyja. If just 1 or 2 get reverse they are going to be safe for a bit since damage will heal them. You just need to time your esuna to hit before your next healing.
Berserk Vaan & Basch. Penelo becoming the healer.
Ultima always looked like a Vieira to me.
I don't get how people can handle the Speed x4. Just seems too chaotic for me.
Wow talk about dumb luck I beat Ultima in my first try I used sages ring white mask and black robes and summoned zeromus and used bubble she got down to a 1/4 of her health remaining and she ko'd zeromus somehow so I had vaan go berserk and finish her off with the dragon whisker while keeping everyone healed I didn't expect to beat it in one try
Easy way to win is to equip sages ring. The Holyja is what fucks you over and Sages ring absorbs all dmg from it.
Isn't there an accessory that absorbs holy magic, does it work against Ultimas Holyja attack?
Realizing this is five months ago, still inclined to answer.. Yes! Sages ring.
Too hard will have to get stronger and maybe look for the white mask b4 i come back here

I can't even survive freaking Holyja, It nukes my whole party every time, even with bubble up. I'm also about level 55
Edit: scratch this, combination of berserk, reverse and sap on vaan and he pretty much just tanked her.

admittedly he was the last man standing when I only had about 10 minutes to get to work so needless to say I was on the edge of my freaking seat xD
use sage Ring or white mask to absorb Holyja, makes the fight easier

Man this fight was too easy
My A team was; ashe, balthier and vaan (all lvl 80-70)
I had balthier and ashe cast decoy, domaine calvados, protect and reverse while vaan just used bacchus wine on himself
It took like 4 minutes in 4x speed multiplier
