Here's the story line I can muster according to the imagery seen:
-Jeremiah Featherston was a veteran of the Great War and spent years in the trenches of France. He grew up in rural Georgia, raised in the Status-Quo of the segregationist life that "White people are the superior people" mentality. As he grew into adulthood, he felt the American government wasn't pushing his nation to help fight the Germans so he joined to help the war effort by joining the Royal Canadian Army in 1915. He was badly wounded when Canadian forces captured Vimy Ridge and when a German officer, armed with his Mauser 1917 model, attempted to shoot Jeremiah, but was saved by a fellow soldier shooting the German officer dead. Jeremiah managed to take the Mauser with him and kept it as a souvenir while being taken to a field hospital where he met Joslyn Ginzburg, a nurse who just arrived from a Catholic Mission in Africa to help assist the wounded Allied soldiers, while healing Jeremiah and Joslyn fell in love and married after the war ended.
-Jeremiah and Joslyn moved to Berlin, Germany during the turbulent Wiemar Republic as Joslyn revealed that she had family in Germany before the war, but was disowned and given up by her parents to the Catholic Church to serve as a nun. She left the Church and volunteered to be a nurse for the war, but then her parents died in 1919 and her brothers died fighting on the Eastern Front. She was the only sole heir so naturally they both moved in.
-Life was not blissful for the new couple for Jeremiah would often have nightmares and horrible memories from the trenches which would lead to violent outbursts He tried easing the pain with alcohol and then graduated to morphine. Joslyn would be the only breadwinner of the household as she tirelessly worked for a local hospital. Now Jeremiah was having conflicting feelings with his own sexuality as he discovered the newly blossoming nightlife in Berlin and discovered a nice fondness for the Cabaret Life in the sexual liberated homosexual scene it offered. Joslyn discovered Jeremiah's outings and in a fit of grief and anger, she shaved her head to ease her own stress. In the aftermath, she dons one of her mother's old wigs and forces herself to wear it until her hair grows back.
-Then one night, angry political outbursts occur outside the hospital where Joslyn worked. The crowd was made up by angry ultra-nationalistic hooligans blaming Jews for the loss of the war. She walked past the crowd only to be pointed out because of her slightly disfigured nose calling it "Jew Nose" and then she is cornered. Another hooligan recognized her and called her by her last name "Ginzburg" and then the hooligans beat her to death all screaming "Stabbed in the back!".
-After hearing the news, Jeremiah was devastated. Realizing how much he truly loved Joslyn and realized that this all fell apart after surviving the war then realizing that if only that German Officer had taken his life, Joslyn would be alive and he wouldn't be subjugated to suffering his horrible memories, his dependency to drugs & alcohol, coping with his own sexuality and now the woman he loves is now dead from acts of prejudice which seems to have still remained in his own mind.
-Then he went into his closet, opened a chest containing his old uniform and wears it. Then he pulled out a metal box and sat next to the window. He looks out the window to see the rain and screams her name. Then he opens the metal box and pulls out the same Mauser the German officer used back in Vimy Ridge. Jeremiah says to himself looking at the same bullet that was meant for him "If only that officer had pulled the trigger. It's time to finish what he started." He loads the bullet and places the end of the barrel to the right of his temple and squeezed the trigger.

If you don't watch them how do you know that your movies deserve a chance over stuff that's nominated. How do you know your just not watching shit movies. Didn't mad max win a bunch? Plenty of horror has won and nominated in the past. Most recently get out So it's not impossible. Pkus plenty of nominated movies are widely wtahced avatar, titanic ect.
Return of the King won best picture. And that was ages ago. They've been taking genre movies seriously for a long time.

Karel Vraždička I HAVE seen modern Oscar winning movies and I must say, the older ones are better. And the Oscars were a lot less pretentious back then. For example, American Graffiti, a teen comedy (and a great one at that) was nominated for several academy awards including best picture, it didn't win any, but those losses are considered to be some of the biggest mistakes in Oscar history. Nowadays the only films to be nominated for best picture are biopics, movies about racism, historical dramas, overthought art-house films, or just any kind of drama movie. The Oscars are so afraid to try something different so they end up being clichéd

This movie clocks in over 4 hours but it was worth it. This movie takes a deep dive into society, showing us a broken man. Instead of getting a good ol' happy ending, the movie shows us that the world broke this man ( because realism=masterpiece)

There is value in making movies that teach us things or make us think about how we treat one another, how we view art and the world, all that kind of thing. But when it all comes down to it, if the movie isn't also entertaining to watch, the main reason to watch it becomes "so we can say we did" (or write about it).

Olorin Elior Yes. The point is, LotR was a great movie without following any "cheap" model of pseudo-artistry, therefore I wouldnt ever compare it to the parody in this video. Its the only epic high-fantasy movie to be this succesful, all copies ended up somewhere between trash and mediocre.

Funny thing is, i used this as a rubrick 4 years ago to quantify the best pictures from 2005-2014, and the winner surprisingly, always had the most points. Experimentally, i started using this from 2015-2018 and outstoundedly, the nominee with the most points kept winning. I even won a bet that moonlight would beat lalaland for best pic against someone who had an insider. Its why i am not surprised black panther lost to bohemian rhapsody in the golden globes, and i am sure the best pic this year will be greenbook, though i havent seen it as of yet, so i dont know its point value compared to former
