Even when I specify "upstate New York," people assume I mean Albany. Like, my mom had to drive us 2 hours SOUTH to visit cousins in Albany ;) New York's not "upstate" until you get to the snowmobile rednecks on the border of Canada.
I'm not strong enough to justify $2000 a month for a cramped apartment with roommates, but NY is fine. There are plenty of legit critiques to make about it, but it would be nice if American as a whole work on decentralizing certain things mainly associated with cities like NY and LA. Like you shouldn't have to only live in those places for certain industries for the number of tradeoffs there can be. It would be dope to have access to some kind of high speed rail system that would better facilitate people living where they want vs where they're going to get the most opportunities.

I've been in the us for 3 years and the only time I've used public transport was when i visited NYC. Tho when I go to china(cause I'm chinese) my parents and me fucking use that shit all the time. I've used more buses while in china in 1 day than I've ever done in the US
You could go back. As a native Pennsylvanian, we would be ecstatic if New Yorkers left PA to go back. It's funny, nyc folks leave to get away and instantly try to turn their new location into nyc by attempting to implement the same policymaking ideals, as I'd they've forgotten why they left in the first place. Evo's Basics I live in Charlotte, which I know is vastly different from New York, but I felt the same way. There was a tranquil quality to seeing an environment that is normally chaotic empty like a clean slate.
I do think Im too weak to live there but I think youre oversimplifying it. People have different preferences. Some people just like quiet with lots of air. Some people like houses with big backyards. You cant assume theyre all weak either, it really is just a preference, personality difference, and how people grew up. Lets face it. Most new yorkers wont be able to live as a farmer in the midwest either. Because they arent used to it. They arent used to the work or the lack of stimulants. Technically you could be weak for not being able to handle quiet, patience, or boredom too. Monk life might not appear arduous but Im not strong enough for that either. At the same time I can appreciate it. Now Im rambling but I just dont like the "look at me Im so tough that everyone else is weak" mentality youre promoting. You can be tough in some ways and weak in others.

I'm not strong enough to justify $2000 a month for a cramped apartment with roommates, but NY is fine. There are plenty of legit critiques to make about it, but it would be nice if American as a whole work on decentralizing certain things mainly associated with cities like NY and LA. Like you shouldn't have to only live in those places for certain industries for the number of tradeoffs there can be. It would be dope to have access to some kind of high speed rail system that would better facilitate people living where they want vs where they're going to get the most opportunities.

I do think Im too weak to live there but I think youre oversimplifying it. People have different preferences. Some people just like quiet with lots of air. Some people like houses with big backyards. You cant assume theyre all weak either, it really is just a preference, personality difference, and how people grew up. Lets face it. Most new yorkers wont be able to live as a farmer in the midwest either. Because they arent used to it. They arent used to the work or the lack of stimulants. Technically you could be weak for not being able to handle quiet, patience, or boredom too. Monk life might not appear arduous but Im not strong enough for that either. At the same time I can appreciate it. Now Im rambling but I just dont like the "look at me Im so tough that everyone else is weak" mentality youre promoting. You can be tough in some ways and weak in others.

That's what annoys me so much when tourists trash talk new york from what they've seen of like. Movies. Or when they went and had a bad time because they did all the things a local would tell them not to do. It's self sabotage, not the city's fault.
