He took his gun, he loaded it with hollowpoints for maximum damage, he went to City Hall and get a maintenance worker to let him in through a basement window, so he could avoid the metal detectors. He then went to the mayors office, got him alone, shot him, then finished him off execution style. Then went past several other offices to get to Milk and repeated it. The story was this with Dan White: he was married to a former Catholic nun and had an extremely small child or two. I know he went on to have more children with his wife while incarcerated but not sure how many then. He had also just opened a baked potato place called One Potato Two at Pier 39 in San Francisco. Pier 39 was being developed then and the site was new and shiny as a tourist extension of Fisherman’s Wharf and a move away from working piers. One Potato Two served loaded baked potatoes that could be customized with a variety of toppings- that was a trend of the time and pretty novel. Not a full blown restaurant. Not sure if they offered inside seating as I never went and not sure if they offered fries along with fountain drinks. It was mainly a to go place and people walked around the Pier munching on hot potatoes . The pressures of the business and growing family weighed heavily upon him. He had only just been elected to the Board of Supervisors and was a political novice having never been an elected official before. Dan Whites’s candidacy came about because of a change in how supervisors were elected. Previously to his run, supervisors were elected by a citywide vote. There was election reform that provided that each neighborhood was represented by someone who lived there as opposed to the elites who ruled the hood. Harvey Milk and George Moscone would not be too happy with what's happening in San Francisco right now with the homelessness and overdosing facing the city. Hopefully the Golden Gate will come back bigger and better than ever. It has before, it will again. Most importantly, hatred and prejudice must never win.
I became aware of this whole tragedy while looking for a good documentary to watch on HBO..a few months ago...and even though I was alive in the 70s, I was probably too young and far removed from the political landscape of our nation...and I don't remember my parents or any adults mentioning this around dinner table conversation or my teachers at school..yet at the age if 54 , I now profoundly felt the impact of the murders of both George and Harvey...I really think George was an incredible politician, and man..of the kind all too rare in today's politics..as well Harvey too was an incredible force for the good of people...both lives being cut short in a vicious act of rage, and jealousy, and fear. . But what is left in my mind..I see the the great smiles on the faces of these two men..showing pride and victory over the great battles they fought and won..
"Documentary"??? seriously? Just the facts or a one-sided mind meld trying to promote one view at the exclusion of another? A documentary on HBO? That's funny.

Imagine if Harvey Milk became Mayor of San Francisco had he not been assassinated. I think he would've been a game changer for the city, as well as for the nation.
We mourn the recent death of Senator Diane Feinstein who was the oldest female in Congress' It is fact that Feinstein, when she was still a San Francisco City Supervisor found Supervisor Harvey Milk's body. She also was the one who announced the deaths of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Milk. She eventually became Mayor of SF and then the rest is history.
Moscow/Milk liberals were big pieces in the 40-50 decline that led to 3 fatal overdoses per day in San Francisco 2023 Also ironic are the Moscone funeral scenes. The left, particularly in San Francisco, hates Catholicism with every fiber of their being
Mayor Feinstein kneeling and praying at Moscone's Catholic Church funeral. Kneeling and praying is a very important part of Catholic prayer and I thought she was Jewish. RIP Diane.
I remember when this happened. I was 11 years old , living in AL. Then Jonestown happened the following week. Thank you for uploading this documentary.
That was a tumultuous era. I lived in S.F. in the late ‘60s-70’s. The V. war. Manson murders, this tragedy, Zodiac murders, Watergate, AIDS, Jonestown, militant groups, . . .
It’s so sad that all this happened. But, Dianne Feinstein handled that moment absolutely professionally. Then she served the City and County of San Francisco (one and the same ) as its mayor for several terms, and then as US Senator for the state of California for 30+ years. Then as now, I am in California, and I am very proud to have had her as my US Senator. It looks like she is going to retire and not run for reelection in 2024. I hope she will get a few years of a well-deserved retirement. Can’t believe that she will be 90 this year! I’ve often wondered if she would have had a similar career trajectory had these events not happened. She had actually previously been an unsuccessful candidate for mayor of San Francisco. Also, she was the Democratic Party nominee for governor of California in 1990. She was the sitting Mayor of San Francisco at the time. But, she lost the 1990 general election for governor to the Republican nominee, then US Senator, Pete Wilson. When Pete Wilson became governor, he appointed a California state legislator, John Seymour (Republican) to replace him in the U.S. Senate. In 1992, mayor Feinstein became US senator by defeating Senator Seymour in a special election. Thank you to the person who posted a thumbs up on my earlier, comment about this, but I thought I would expand it a little!
Dawgy; she’s been a zombie for like at least 15 years. Check her trading portfolio. Granted, she handled this particular moment. I’ve lived here my whole life and I believe I have voted for this atrocity. But she sells areas like my part of CA out to rep SF, LA, SD, Sac. It forgets why it runs and her absenteeism is just as much of threat on democracy as _______ party is. If you were honest you’d be embarrassed to be “proud” of this lady. Like I really don’t understand how we worship politicians. They’re human. Many are very fallible. - Fallible person
Always found Feinstein to be self serving and wanting any publicity she could get. I may be wrong, but it seemed much the same back in 1978 when this tragic event happened. Shes reaffirming my opinion now, as well. Clearly she should do the unselfish thing, and step down from the Senate. She hasnt, and thats selfish to me.
@@chocolatetownforever7537 a lot of politicians are self serving. I think both sides are delusional thinking it’s a partisan issue. Diane is just one of many geriatrics running a show that impacts ALL of us; only ever self serving.
Two words - term limits. No one should be in politics that long. 90 years old? Come on, there’s something seriously wrong with that. Reminds me of another man who can’t stop soiling his pants, constantly takes vacations while his country suffers, is VERY self serving and corrupt, never tells the truth…anyways, “no comment” (followed by shiteating grin)
That was a pretty crucial element they left out of the film milk! Had no clue Dan White and Harvey had been friends and I've seen about three Harvey Milk documentaries in addition to the film
I'm still in shock that I was not aware of any of this happening. Yes, I was only about 7 or 8 years old but I lived within about 20 minutes of the Castro and the Civic Center area and my mom worked right off Market Street and California and she didn't know any of this was going on
I remember this story so well (even though I have never been to S.F.). So sad. I don't know what to think of White, though. Did he just snap from the pressure? Was he evil? He brought a gun, so we know it was somewhat premeditated. Well, fortunately God will judge him appropriately.
The movie made it appear as though Milk was targeted at least partly because of his sexuality. Such a disservice to the real story: a story of vial revenge against a perceived political back-stabbing. Hollywood agenda ruins everything.
Great post. I love watching historical stuff like this. Despicable how he was allowed to get such a light sentence with what was really a planned double assassination. A depressive Twinkie defense. Ridiculous!
Harvey Milk was right. Coming out is important and incredibly powerful. When other people know they have someone they admire or love who is LGBTQ+, it changes their opinions and support.
This is what serving other's is all about Senator Feinstein Served The People of San Francisco so from across The Bay from your Sister City of Oakland thank you Dianne Feinstein.
I always wondered how Diane Feinsteinbergrosenstein and Nancy, who didn’t make a lot of money, lived the lives of Apple and Intel CEO’s. Didn’t add up. They both made government salaries. I did research. Both those broads husbands greatly, greatly benefited from their connections to get extremely wealthy. It’s of course illegal but good luck prosecuting people like that. Grossly corrupt politicians. Sickening. That drunk loser husband of Nancy damn near killed a person walking on the sidewalk when he was drunk driving his Porsche. Diane and Nancy are both corrupt pigs. I wish Nancy would hurry up and join Diane in Hell. Peace. ✌️
She helped ruin California and prospered personally. That's not serving anyone but yourself. California would be better if she and slick Willie Brown had never come to power. Look at San Francisco now 😳
I just watched this bio last night and incredible the injustice these two souls recieved back then. The thought of a sugar products vs an intitled white man losing his IT was the reason for the murders, just incredible. What is even more incredible, Diane is still in the Senate.....folks we gotta start looking for a future for our democrats....these old folk, have got to go
I'm not sure if your comment is suggesting that it was sugar (which is just ignorant) or if you think it was partly because he was white (which is racist) and lost his job? Either way your judgement is really strange to me.
I totally blame the jurors for the events following their decision. As a juror you are.responsible to all not just who you feel more attuned He showed premeditation.and should have gotten life no parole. Perhaps they should think of the cries of the victims next time.
All of those people/ gatekeepers should be ashamed of themselves. But you see they have no shame. 107 years old and you still running for office. Crazy. Strom Thurmond how old was that lizard? And was doing nothing for the country.
If it wasn’t for cult leader Jim Jones, Mayor Moscone, Milk, Feinstein, Willie Brown probably wouldn’t have been elected to their political positions. All four preached social justice and Jones’s Peoples Temple preached social justice. Jones supported them financially and on Election Day bused his followers to the voting booths.
At least someone remembers the San Francisco cesspool known as City Hall from the 1970s. The People's Temple, and Jones', influence was quite evident in those days. These politicians never inquired about the People's Temple, even though the rumors of the abuse (physical, emotional, and financial) where known through the offices of City Hall. These politicians knew that one phone call to Jim Jones guaranteed hundreds of people at a rally, or handing out pamphlets, or votes for them. Moscone, Milk, Feinstein, and Brown all supported Jones and his ideas, but became mute and hiding when the suicidal massacre had occurred.
I saw 'The Life and Times of Harvey Milk' documentary when it came to the movie theater in 1985. It was so beautiful in it sorrowful and respectful elegy of the subject that I felt it was the final word on the man. While Sean Penn is a protean actor, the Milk shown on widescreen in 1985 needed no cinematic replication whatsoever.
48:37 They keep showing this window through which Dan White climbed to avoid the City Hall metal detectors at the entrance. I'm guessing the window was not barred like this on the day of the assassinations, or else White couldn't have got in. Am I right?

What a wingnut. Liberalism is EXclusive, INtolerant, totalitarian, and violent
Harvey Milk and George Moscone would not be too happy with what's happening in San Francisco right now with the homelessness and overdosing facing the city. Hopefully the Golden Gate will come back bigger and better than ever. It has before, it will again.
Most importantly, hatred and prejudice must never win.
Its sad that this happened it shouldnt have.
That's funny.
..I wasn't even alive then, was born in 1986. ..and I'm not even American, I'm Canadian, live in Montreal. And yet even I know about this! LOL
.. albeit thanks to Sean Penn and James Franco! hehe
@@putnamcountycrimeanalysiswandrwhat are you talking about?..did I upset your sensibilities?..you'll be strong!
Excellent documentary 💯
I wish somebody ask the judge and jury later have you erred? What was their motivation and inclinations, has it served anyone?
same ole whyte grievences 35 years later. he was actually being replaced and choose violence instead of just stepping aside. after he resigned at that. and the privilege of only doing 5 years for 2 premeditated murders.
Worst Jury, but OJ did the same thing.
Both men to this day, should still be in prison, never to get out. But we live by the jury system and a lot of ppl get off when you have juries that don't take thier jobs seriously, but allowing emotions, not the facts to get the way of justice. Dan killed himself and OJ is still walking around thinking he's innocent....but the wrath of God's justice, still awaits him. I'm surprised neither of his kids have come out with a book???
What does OJ have to do with this?!!
Wrong. O.J. "never" admitted to murder.
Anyone else here after hearing the sad news about Senator Dianne Feinstein?
Rest in power Moscone, Milk and Feinstein 🕊️🕊️🕊️
You’ll never learn

Here
May Feinstein burn in hell, as I’m sure Milk and Marcone will as well.
Need many more worhwhile politicians!
This is so sad. May they rest in peace.

I was only a child but Feinstein announcing the murder of Moscone and Milk is as indelible as 9-11. RIP Ms. Feinstein.
I was only 8 years old when Mayor Mascone and Supervisor Milk was assassinated.
As indelible as 9/11?
LOL....wow.
Yup.
I remember that day so well. I had a job in the East Bay and heard the news from a co worker. I called the city desk at the Chronicle…because the story was so unbelievable. I do not remember the rest of the day.
Imagine if Harvey Milk became Mayor of San Francisco had he not been assassinated. I think he would've been a game changer for the city, as well as for the nation.
I don't think he would've beaten Moscone.
Moscone for two or three terms, followed by Agnos.
"San Francisco has become a collecting place of every crazy in the world..."
Still true today.
Gay rights not LGBTQ
We mourn the recent death of Senator Diane Feinstein who was the oldest female in Congress' It is fact that Feinstein, when she was still a San Francisco City Supervisor found Supervisor Harvey Milk's body. She also was the one who announced the deaths of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Milk. She eventually became Mayor of SF and then the rest is history.
so well done. THIS was a San Francisco to love! a tragedy for SF and the families. Proud to be a Moscone/Milk liberal.
Moscow/Milk liberals were big pieces in the 40-50 decline that led to 3 fatal overdoses per day in San Francisco 2023
Also ironic are the Moscone funeral scenes. The left, particularly in San Francisco, hates Catholicism with every fiber of their being
I remember Mayor Moscone and supervisor Milk when they were killed the verdict was discusting
Mayor Feinstein kneeling and praying at Moscone's Catholic Church funeral. Kneeling and praying is a very important part of Catholic prayer and I thought she was Jewish. RIP Diane.
Heaven help us if there is a requirement for who may kneel to pray.
@@liannebedard5521 Kneeling is showing respect to God.
…and to the memory of her murdered Catholic colleague. She was Jewish, but had attended a Catholic girls’ school.
I remember this. And the shocking verdict for the murderer, Dan White.
Dianne Feinstein was still standing until a few weeks ago - what a warrior!
I remember when this happened. I was 11 years old , living in AL. Then Jonestown happened the following week. Thank you for uploading this documentary.
I am 81,loving in Queretaro since 2021. and this was wrong
Kamala and Brown.
Actually, I believe Jonestown happened on the 18th of November, and the assassinations happened on the 27th.
That was a tumultuous era. I lived in S.F. in the late ‘60s-70’s. The V. war. Manson murders, this tragedy, Zodiac murders, Watergate, AIDS, Jonestown, militant groups, . . .
@@MB-vu3ow Yup.

Fallible person
@@ajhproductions2347 Mitch McConnell and Feinstein one and the same. Just different sides of coin. Still sharing their barebacks aren’t they?
California would look today so much better if Harvey were alive.
I feel like nobody would have cared if a movie wasn't made.
I can eat junk food like crazy, but I have never wanted to harm anyone. This was a bullshit defense for two assissinations!!!
Dan White was used to quitting jobs; this was the first time his quitting affected more people. He was out of his depth in politics.
That was a pretty crucial element they left out of the film milk! Had no clue Dan White and Harvey had been friends and I've seen about three Harvey Milk documentaries in addition to the film
That rendition of swing low Sweet Chariot was physically painful to listen to
I'm still in shock that I was not aware of any of this happening. Yes, I was only about 7 or 8 years old but I lived within about 20 minutes of the Castro and the Civic Center area and my mom worked right off Market Street and California and she didn't know any of this was going on
Does anyone know if Dan White's widow is still alive? I've searched for info on the internet and can't find anything.
Hello and good day to you ladies and gentlemen watching this video
Maybe the worst moment in San Francisco history other than the 1906 earthquake.
Jonestown
Dan White implied that it was spontaneous, but being armed, and with extra bullets, then climbing through the window... Obvious premeditated...
Is that Maury Povich, interviewing White after his resignation?
Wow
So killings in the innercity can be partly to blame on the high sugar diet that is consumed within that community
Tucker Carlson had admired dan white. Enough said.
Sad moment for Dan White. Mayor Feinstein aged beautifully over the years she looks just as she did in the 70's ❤ RIP Mayor Moscone and Harvey Milk
49ers played the steelers that night.

Great post. I love watching historical stuff like this. Despicable how he was allowed to get such a light sentence with what was really a planned double assassination. A depressive Twinkie defense. Ridiculous!

Dan White would've been a trumpette
That was one diabolical guy , Dan White . Good riddance .
He should have gotten the chair or life in prison but in the end he took his own life it wasn't the soda or twinkkies
And this guy was a cop...
SF has been on a downward spiral ever since.
In what way. Diane Feinstein was a strong law and order mayor
Homophobia or the twinkie made me do it. We all know the answer. Sad
Harvey Milk was right. Coming out is important and incredibly powerful. When other people know they have someone they admire or love who is LGBTQ+, it changes their opinions and support.
Yeah, this one always made me shake my head.. Everything about it..
Look at San Francisco now 😳
This type of verdict happens all of the time in San Francisco
Ronald Reagan also opposed the Briggs Initiative.
48:59 I would think he'd end up with diabetes.
What a shameful verdict 😮
Very interesting, thank you!
Excellent documentary
That was n execution😲
What is said at 54:04 is pretty ironic when you think of how many people are released and bailed today that just end up committing more crimes after
I just watched this bio last night and incredible the injustice these two souls recieved back then.
@@Goofyguy4ever The irony of all this, is that Diane F. made her mark with this event that led her to DC.

This is one of MAGA's all-time favourite stories.
All Roads Led To *JONESTOWN!.*
Listen to Dead Kennedy’s I fought the law it’s based after this story!
How dear you mention that horrible person in the same sentence
@@BrianMaxey-z9e LOL
This is just sad. And as a gay man to see these pioneers for our rights and liberal rights itself, just be assassinated like this is beyond sick

I think Dan White was suffering from ptsd, but I don’t think that justifies him killing mayor Moscone and Harvey Milk. He should’ve remain in prison.
I agree to that.
Say what you will about Dan White, but he did take out Dan White.
When yte men don't get what they believe is rightfully theirs
I saw 'The Life and Times of Harvey Milk' documentary when it came to the movie theater in 1985. It was so beautiful in it sorrowful and respectful elegy of the subject that I felt it was the final word on the man. While Sean Penn is a protean actor, the Milk shown on widescreen in 1985 needed no cinematic replication whatsoever.
48:37 They keep showing this window through which Dan White climbed to avoid the City Hall metal detectors at the entrance. I'm guessing the window was not barred like this on the day of the assassinations, or else White couldn't have got in. Am I right?
Shouldn't Life in Prison or Death be the punishment!??
