Your tip about tying the strings with smaller string is exactly the kinda tip i needed, Attempting to make my first string and was dreading managing 3 or 5 sets of 15ft of tangling mess. Thanks for this! very informative video.
Thank you Iodo! Just now coming in to this as a project. This looks very much like the traditional Balearic slings; did some Spanish person teach you how to do this? If I am to understand correctly, I need six lengths of cordage, each about 30”, which would yield a sling about 23” in length. The advantage I think, with plaited slings like this, is that they easily recover after a cast and you can put the ends back together quickly without fussing, I think. I’ll try this!! Thanks again!!!
This is easily the best tutorial for making a sling (when one doesn’t want to use historical materials / techniques) that I have seen. The first one that explained why I should bother braiding it! Great work - my son and I are going to have a lot of fun making them.
I would say that im an good slingmaker (i have made around 100 slings) and I do think that your video is great to get people started in slinging. Well done
@@IodoDwarvenRanger Tennisballs can be used almost anywhere without causing a lot of damage. The youtuber MrJaegoor has a video that shows how to make rusty balls. They are a very good practice ammo, but should be used outside
Thanks Iodo. Made my first sling watching this and very happy with myself just quietly but second one will be even better. Will learn with tennis balls before I try rocks. Great content.

I especially liked this video. I made a few of these before. I did a braided pocket vs the leather pocket. But yours honestly looks more classy. Nice video!
Awesome video! My sling didn't turn out quite as nice as yours, mainly because the twine I'm using is old, and has been out in the rain and other elements for a long time. Can't wait to take it out to try it out!
Not sure why the 2nd video got it's comments turned off, but I wanted to say that you gave me the push to actually make a first sling! I do however wonder if you have also made a 5 thread braided sling? What's the benefit doing 5 instead of 3? Because most seem to do a 5 braid. Thank you for your content!
Concerning pouches - felt is an overlooked material and if thick enough will make quite a functional pouch when sewn in (and many other things like quivers etc). I get mine at a hobby shop (polyester ;( , though historically many braided slings were wool so I guess the real thing should work just as good). Easier to find and cheaper than leather and easy to work. It's a plebeian's choice, I know, but give felt a chance!
Hmmm... interesting, the leather I used was from an old sofa so it cost nothing, but it's a flat piece but if I made a pouch from wet-felted wool I could actually make it sort-of cup shaped, I might give this a try
Is it 2mm string you're using? I want to order a 30m roll amd get started but dont know what thickness. This looks like a really good thing to make for a beginner slinger ❤
Consider the idea of Balearic Golf. Traditional golf course ... never have to use the green. Balls are golf balls. At the green area put up the standard target. One has to hit the bullseye to sink the 'putt'. This may not be an easy thing to set up in your warmer climate since the golf courses may stay open all year around. In the more Northern states the cold weather allows Archery Golf. Same idea only at the green area a plastic tube with tennis ball on top is substituted for the putting hole. If it works for Archery, why not for the Balearic skill? It should be no problem. What do you think?
@@IodoDwarvenRanger Know anyone willing to give land enough for a combination 'Disc Golf and the Balearic Golf'? It could be a simple 9 hole course and would take little maintenance really ... just being mowed every 2 weeks or so.

So, I don't know if you've gotten to the actual throwing rocks (or tennis balls, my Dogs favorites) yet. If not, please understand that the first day or 3 (I'm about 2 weeks into learning now) thing might go in any direction, even backwards. So I'd suggest that until you have it a bit under control, something like an empty baseball field would be a good place to start learning.

Im wondering if i could use this method with 5 braid instead of 3
I'd say it's adaptable. The extra groups makes splitting the pouch a little more challenging.
