    So happy you reached 1000 subs! I may revisit the cloak idea. My old cloak was made of two British Army wool blankets many years ago. But now, with repairs, it fits the idea of a ranger making repairs on the go. Looking forward to seeing more!

    This series on the Ruana Cloak was very comprehensive and easy to follow, I am impressed! I made my own in just a day with this assistance and it came out wonderfully (altough I did make the neckhole much more elaborate than it maybe needed to be).

    Another helpful instructional Iodo. I am accustomed to customizing my clothing articles for the opposite reasons that you are. Where you are a Dwarven Ranger, I am an Ogrish Barbarian. As standard patterns are likely too large for you, they are too tiny to fit my girth. So, we must endeavor to persevere and size things as needed.

    • @IodoDwarvenRanger

      Thank you, glad I could help :) and yes, adapting patterns is a necessary evil, I gave up with purchased patterns years ago because aside from ordinary clothing in ladies sizes, all patterns are to big for me

    Mae govannen, Iodo! Oparnoshoshoi from the MERF forums here! I was in the discord channel and talking about a Ruana I'm planning to make once my fabric arrives (also inspired by Kramer's video) and someone mentioned you had done a video, as well. So here I am to check it out. And wouldn't you know it, as I'm skipping out on work and watching this, I am wearing an alpaca serape (cowboy poncho) and comparing these measurements to what I'm currently wearing. And sure enough, it hangs to the sides long enough to touch my elbows, to the front enough to touch my knees, and a little shorter in the back! So I may just trace this one to make my Ruana!

      yes, star wars fan here, I get the reference, if I remember correctly what she wears in A New Hope is basically a white poncho with some necklaces, there are a lot of good but simple costumes in those movies. on another note, have you ever thought about how like a jedi you look if you wear a Ruana straight down the front (like my thumbnail image) then fold the sides up onto your shoulders and belt it at the waist, it's basically an instant costume

    • @IodoDwarvenRanger
      @IodoDwarvenRanger  2 года назад +1

      hmmm... you can't easily, because unlike a half circle cloak that is just a huge piece of fabric, the ruana has a slit, it would be possible that the slit could button closed or something? but then you would have buttons to snag on stuff, but if you wanted it to function as a blanket I would think that the bigger the better would be the way to go

      @@IodoDwarvenRanger This will take some experimenting, im 6'2" so i shall have to practice...was wndering if they wide "gandalf" ruana could be folded , so quarter fold in each side to middle, for ease of wear...am still only halfway through the video tho....

    • @IodoDwarvenRanger
      @IodoDwarvenRanger  2 года назад

      @@neoaliphant yes, if you belt a ruana so it becomes tunic like, you can fold it onto your shoulders to make it easier to wear so that could work, you'd have to give it a test with scrap fabric - however you are in danger of looking like a jedi lol

    At the 650 Mark you're breaking my heart here. I'm also not only wanting it to go to full length of my arms but over my pack not for adventuring but more s*** hits the fan types GO bags and all that kind of stuff. I'm homeless so there's certain things always have to have on my person and I'm trying to get more sustainable if you will. So could you please show me with that trial and error cloak how it holds when you do the the typical you know not just draped over you but tied behind your back and all that kind of stuff can you show how it looks and how it is when can you show yourself playing with it I guess how it operates and fails

    • @IodoDwarvenRanger
      @IodoDwarvenRanger  2 года назад +3

      sorry lol, but realistically, while a long and wide ruana wouldn't work for a fantasy adventurer who is climbing and fighting monsters, in the real world in a SHTF scenario, or just everyday life it would potentially be a better option, it would be easier to double use as a blanket, it would keep you warmer/dryer and fit over your gear etc... Ultimately if you need to do something athletic a ruana can just be thrown off onto the floor and picked up after
      Living Anachronism has a video called "BEST Cloak for a Medieval Adventurer" where from 14.49 he talks about the ruana, and he shows several different configurations of how it can be worn and what you can do while wearing it, might be worth a look??? and honestly while me and Kramer have both been on long treks wearing a pack over a ruana, I have never tried wearing the pack under it so I couldn't say how well that would work
      If we're talking modern real world survival and bug-out etc... I have a military style poncho in the emergency bag I keep in my van, (EDIT this one: heinnie.com/helikon-tex-poncho ), many a time when I've gone out hiking and not brought a coat because it wasn't raining on the flat lands where I live it has saved the day, it can double as a shelter (I have done this in storms on the hills) and can be easily worn over every pack and gear configuration I've ever used. If you want warmth/sustainability maybe you just need to make one of those from wool? and if that really doesn't work add a slit and you'll have a ruana, or even better - if the slit closed with buttons/zipper/hook and loop it could be a ruana, poncho and blanket all in one? (just a wild idea, I don't have the fabric to try it but if I did I would)
      apologies for the lengthy comment, I got carried away :)
