Back in June 2023, Matt took a moment to have breakfast with a legend of modern sport climbing Ben Moon. He witnessed and lived all the changes in the sport in the past 30 years and created the innovative Moonboard that you can nearly find in every indoor climbing gym and even in some basements!
We take a journey through the decades and unpack some pivotal moments in his life... enjoy!

I think the main issues with modern gyms is the lack of experienced culture in them. They attract new climbers relentlessly which is great for the expansion of the sport we all love, but its detrimental to the culture within the gyms. I.E. People walking underneath people climbing, jumping on a problem that someone has literally just brushed down, walking into toilets with climbing shoes on etc. The beginners/new starters aren't soaking in the 30 year old gym etiquette from the experienced gym goers because the experienced gym goers aren't there. And I believe the architecture of a gym breeds the culture within. Most modern gyms prioritise café and shop over the actual climbing or climbing community. I adore the Foundry still and am eager to get on the school rooms list.

I will say I like that the moon board is notoriously sandbagged and just plain difficult to climb on! Even if it maybe a bit too hard for most climbers starting out, I think that difficulty lends itself to the board being an amazing training tool. The moon board was never supposed to replace a commercial, gym it’s made to supplement them. And the way it does this is by giving people a standardized training tool to get better at a powerful and burly movement. What a brilliant tool.
