Moving the "Tonight Show" to 11:35 was just adjusting the start time by 5 minutes so affiliates could sell more commercial time, but the show itself was not being shortened. Also, it must be acknowledged that by then, Carson was only doing 3 shows a week, and taking frequent vacations while relying on Jay Leno to bring in the younger viewers (and btw, he was regularly hosting more than once a week). Further, it's known that Johnny was really offended by "Saturday Night Live" referring to him in sketches as being "old hat." It was just time for him to step down- and if he'd realized it a few years earlier, Dave would almost certainly have been *NBC's* choice to replace him. Carson hanging in there too long actually hurt Dave's bid to be the next host of "TTS."
28:21 this was when they (CBS) played shows like Forever Knight and Silk Stalkings. they had a whole late night "crimetime" block that played imported Canadian dramas
