  • In the last video, we talked about the best AI tools for game dev in 2024, and why it’s better to embrace this new miraculous technology instead of being afraid of it. And today, I’m going to show you these tools in practice by making a simple game jam style game with the help of AI.

    AI can be used when making video games in a bunch of different ways. The bad way is having everything in your video game be AI generated. This makes a less cohesive experience and it will make scaling the project difficult. The better way is to use AI to do the tasks you would normally do and fix it afterwards to get it just how you like.
    I would not recommend relying on tools like Chat GPT for giving you creative ideas. A little bit here and there in a brainstorming session isn't the worst thing in the world, but be careful. Chat GPT ideas are usually very formulaic and other people with the same idea (asking chat gpt for the idea) will end up making the same video game.
    Chat GPT is great for coding something fast. I recommend always going through line by line to match your coding conventions and revising its code. Chat GPT can make mistakes, so don't simply copy paste and forget about it.
    3D AI studio is great for 3D modeling. If you don't know how to use blender or any other 3D modeling software you can still easily create a 3D video game with the help of 3D AI studio. Simply type in what you want a model of, hit generate, and about 30 seconds later, you'll have it. You can also use their text to image generator a few times until you get an image you like, then use said image in the image to 3D generator. That last one is my preferred workflow. Even though 3D AI studio is sponsoring the video, I'd still be talking about them, even if they didn't. Its a real game changer when working in 3D.
    Eleven Labs has a bunch of audio tools, but I personally use them exclusively for their sound effect generator. The sound effects are really good and it gives you four to choose from. For indies like me who struggle with good sound design, Eleven Labs is easily a must have. And its free! (at least for 200 sound effects / month)
    MixAudio is a really powerful music generator that not only lets you quickly generate music from text, images, and other songs, but also lets you customize the songs it generates. Generations are very fast. As you can see in the video, you get 4 songs in under 10 seconds! The most unique part of MixAudio is how they approach the whole AI copyright issues. MixAudio encourages musicians to provide their music for training and will compensate them for it, instead of training off of copyrighted material like most other generative AI. You can be sure whenever you use MixAudio you are also supporting the humans behind it.
    Check out the video to see actual uses of these AI tools to make a small game jam style game in unity! Or check out the last video where I talk about the tools exclusively and show off some best practices:

    Its all about the prompt and using it as pseudocode to generate acurate results. Its pretty cool since i suck at drawing!!
    Prompt = Art! 😊

    this is such a good video! good steps in the right direction. next year will be the year that AI game dev explodes, mark my words.
    also you should have paid & used Claude just for the coding purposes alone.

    Does this not take away the entire point of art? Genuine question, not trying to hate

      I address my opinions on the ethics of ai at the end of the last video. But the tldr is that I think ai can improve productivity and lead to artists being creative with the ai so they can get stuff done faster. This would mean less artists would be required for projects so studios could use these artists (and programmers too) for more games and sell for less money. In a perfect world that’s how I see it going, but I do agree partly with you. It does take away from the point art, but players having fun with a video game aren’t going to care about whether or not the art was generated by AI (unless it impacts quality). I do think the sooner everyone embraces AI the better off we are as humans, but that is in the end of the day just my opinion. Thanks for watching!

      @@WillHessGameDev That's a well thought out perspective, I appreciate you taking the time to explain it. I think mainly my issue is, for example, creating AI art of a gun and using AI to convert it to 3d. Nothing about that involves creation or human touch. The design, both the original 2d and new 3d design, are entirely fabricated by an AI. So it takes away the human element. Yes it doesn't affect the players directly, but would you go to an art museum full of AI art, even if it is good looking art? The beauty of art comes from how a human created it with all their knowledge and skills in the field and the story behind it. What's the point if it's just AI generated. I understand wanting to speed up the process, and that's perfectly fine! As an indie dev I understand that. Using the 3D modeling AI tool isn't a problem necessarily if the original art was human, because that's just a tool to help cut time. This came out a lot longer than I meant it to, sorry if you actually read through all of this

      Don’t apologize for writing a good insightful comment lol! I agree with you that I wouldn’t go to a museum to see AI art, but I also wouldn’t go to a museum to see human art. Personally that’s not what I’m interested, which is probably the underlying cause for my opinions on AI. And yes creating an AI gun has no human touch, but it is pretty damn convenient!
