In downtown Portland I gave a homeless man a cigarette and couple dollars. Two weeks later, I saw him again around the same time (5am) and he gave me a cigarette and a couple dollars. He was paying me back and I wasn't even expecting that. It was pretty cool.
John Densmore is underrated according to RUclips. Also "that comment that reads like a meme" and that question which is always answered the same way: "Hold my beer."
Oregon is a beautiful state, but Portland sucks. Im a native grew up there, had a wonderful childhood... Those were different times. It's now expensive crowded and overrated.
I loved in Portland for two years about 15 years ago.. I'm thinking of moving back because IT is an incredible beautiful town. After living in the south, east and Midwest I've enjoyed the NE best! ☺️
Your Hillsdale entry is so spot on, and I would agree with what you said about it but go much further. Extremely friendly, and I prefer it to Richmond, where I also lived for about as long, because it's more spacious (outside, with nature trails and fewer people, and inside, with larger apartments). Very quiet at night and downright easy to get to downtown, and fun to see some older parts of the city closer to Tigard and Beaverton. There are so many gems within walking and very short driving distance that I shouldn't even be telling you - Sasquatch, for sure, but also Renner's, Noy Viet Lao, the Cider Mill / Friar Tuck's, City Thai, Pizzicato, Dairy Hill, Gigi's, Burger Hill, a freaking Co-Op and a Fred Meyer (and dispensaries and fast food) - so I'm quite pleased. Fire on the Mountain was my obsession when I lived in the Cully neighborhood, which was a bit more dangerous but borders the tamer Fremont neighborhood, which is a fine area too. I also really like Foster-Powell, but kind of also a little grimier - but if you like it a little grimier, PLEASE check out Powell Blvd from 30th ave to 82nd ave and you could find something affordable and accessible to parks and businesses... though you are more likely to get your stuff stolen out of your car, and please be mindful of your bike and locking it up unattended. Please be nice to Portland when you move here :) xox from a Bend, Oregon native, spent 6 years in Portland so far, no desire to leave (a lot of Portlanders travel, but keep home here).
Great video! Thanks for the memories and update. After living for 22 years on Pill Hill in the Homestead neighborhood, I knew when I finally sold it, that I wouldn't be able to buy another house and afford the cost of living any more. So, I moved to Puerto Vallarta. Been here almost 15 years and I love it. Although we only have 2 breweries (owners from Seattle and Vancouver, BC) it has neighborhoods also, each with it's own character. Thanks again. Great job!!!
I live of of Halsey in the Hollywood area. This video showed me all the areas I love to spend my free time, and it reminded me of why I love this city so much. Thanks. 💚
In the handful of times I’ve been to Portland, I’ve taken a shine to the Hollywood District. I assume that since you’re living there, it’s a good choice. What do you like and not like about it?
I live in Cully, and spend a lot of time in Hollywood, and the surrounding neighborhoods as well. The Moon and Sixpence pub is by far my favorite pub in Portland!
Thank You for All your Videos. I live in Florida, unfortunately. My Son just moved to NW Portland, and I am glad to see it is safe, clean, and tailored to his lifestyle. Thank you for the correct input, as I helped move him there.
Overlook is a HORRIBLE area. And so is downtown. Downtown is FULL of crime, drugs, and violence. I've lived here for 8 years, those are some of the worst areas.
CLOUT I think anywhere you go is gonna have crime and violence in parts but realistically you can’t compare Oregon to Cali or TX bc they all got they own dangerous areas, go to north Portland an it’ll be pretty much similar to your average ghetto.
As a native Southern Californian, NO. We do not pronounce "Alameda" the way you said that we do. We say it the same way that you described it for Oregon. Other than that, cool video.
I've always wanted to visit there and you just convinced me I have to come there ASAP!! You have a beautiful city!! Unfortunately, I live 45 minutes east of San Francisco and it sucks!!
Visit in summer, but don't move. It's more much depressing than CA most of the year. Maybe go the Waterfront Blues Fest, then get out - you saw the best thing in PDX.
seems as the list put a heavier weight on "family friendliness". As someone with no kids and no intention of having any ( at 50, that boat sailed long ago thankfully), I'll just read the list backwards😎 Both Downtown and NW Portland sound good to me.
I was in Portland in January 2017. My only problem, The lose their mind if it ever snow. I know it never really snow, but my god they get spooked and abandon their cars right on the road.
It’s because the temperature hovers above and below freezing so the roads end up with black ice (meaning that you can’t see it). Add to that the fact that it snows so infrequently that most people aren’t used to it or equipped with cars to handle it. It’s same in SoCal when it rains. 😂
My cousin grew up in Portland and I always wanted to live there with her. I did for a short time last year and I still love it so much. Awesome place to have kids
It would be helpful to show the neighborhood highlighted on a map at the beginning of each description. I've lived in Portland for 2 years and I don't know where a couple of these places are (Hillsdale and Richmond).
I grew up on several 42nd street near Woodstock school in the 50s nice then but now Portland has changed for the worst more crime drugs etc. I like Troutdale and Gresham if you move to Oregon Portland Troutdale is really nice. Westmoreland is nice pretty but expensive. Sellwood use to be nice but I don't know now I live in Colorado now for 25 years and I will stay here . Things have really changed over the years. I left core on in 1962 haven't been back except to visit my dad who died in 1980. My best fe.riend just passed away this year so there's nothing there for me today.
Any thoughts on the schools there? I ask because I'm thinking of moving from GA with my family and am interested in neighborhoods with great schools. Thanks!
Well the neighborhood has Robert Gray Middle School & Wilson High School. I couldn't tell you how good they are though. I don't have kids or know any kids that go there.
Did you know that Laurelhurst park was designed by a person who had formerly worked with the agency that designed Central Park in NYC? Yep. I lived on 28th between Belmont and Stark and it was a very nice walking/biking neighborhood. I still miss the ethnic food in SE but Gold Beach and Brookings are getting better...
Seeing downtown on here gave me a little hope... I'm moving there from just a few hours south of Portland (for school), and I only recently decided on student housing downtown, even though I have next to no idea of what to expect. If you say it's pretty alright, I'll take your word for it!
Zach Whitworth just be careful at night walking around. I lived in Portland for the last 10 years and I've had multiple friends get mugged or attacked downtown.
I go to college in Portland and I'm Moving to Goose Hollow for student housing. Goose Hollow is literally touching downtown and is about a 10 to 15 min walk to Portland State University, which is located in downtown where I'll be attending soon. Goose Hollow is nice and sorta quiet for a downtown neighborhood.
Zack Whitworth Downtown has Los Zetas and some groups of the Sinaloa Antrax men. But for now they seem to respect one another and there may be collaborations between them IDK. If you are a local you wont even know what they look like, so just BUY your condo.
Love your videos. Just wanted to note that there isn't an ice skating rink in Downtown. The one pictured is in Lloyd District. That said, it is a short Max ride away from Downtown.
I grew up in NE Portland and lived in the city for 70 years. These videos were all taken within a 2-3 month period, between June 15 and the beginning of September based on the weather. The rest of the time it is cloudy and/or rainy and/or cloudy and snowy.
Sellwood/West Moreland is awesome. I’ve lived here as a single mom with my son since he was in preschool and he is now in the 4th grade, and goes to a fancy “private like” public school, Duniway Elementary, which is down the street from Reed College in East Moreland. Also, if you’re judging by wealth and safety, what about Garthwick? Jus sayin...
I lived on 37th and Stark, right behind Laurelhurst Park. The tennis court was across the street from my front yard. It's an old money neighborhood, once inhabited my some of Portland's eastside elites. My home was built by a doctor in 1926.
Dude, I was checking out your channel last night. You have some great footage. It actually started me looking at Oregon Channels to do a list about. Top 10 Oregon channel type thing.
I am a married public school teacher who is thinking about moving to Portland or Vancouver, WA. Which neighborhood in the area is nice, but also affordable? I like the idea of Northwest Portland because of the Trader Joe's. Many of the neighborhoods listed in this video are too expensive for me.
Tom Riordan vancouver is definitely more affordable, theres a trend of people moving there from portland neighborhoods to still have easy access to the city, but more space for their kids to play, parking space, etc
Tom Riordan..Vancouver has Trader Joe's, Whole Foods and New Seasons (similar to Whole Foods) and various other food stores. While it is more affordable than Portland, housing prices have gone up over the last few years. The commute to Portland is horrendous. So unless you can work in Vancouver or work out of your home or have a job that has flexible hours, I'd suggest looking in Oregon. Oregon has income tax. Vancouver has high sales tax...8.4%. I moved here from the East years ago. I don't regret it one minute.
..yeah Milwaukee WI where I lived decades ago is now actually smaller in population than Portland and downtown there is not where I'd want to be after dark. Used to be OK when I was growing up there but again that was almost a half century ago.
Extremely. Yes. I lived in Portland for 10 years and never felt unsafe walking around downtown by myself. I’m sure there are pockets of crime like anywhere else, but overall it’s a very safe city.
I'm personally glad I moved away from PDX but direly miss my friends and loved ones. But I gotta disagree w/this list. I'd put Hillsdale at the bottom, Irvington is WEST of Alameda and median home prices are WAY higher than stated, and the BEST part of part of Portland IS alameda/Beaumont-Wilshire hands down!!👍🏻👍🏻
No doubt that all these places are really nice but they all have one thing in common, they're all culture free. One race of people, I think it would have been much nicer if it was a bit more Cosmopolitan having people of different nationalities.
Even though I’m not crazy about this state and it’s climate, but may I say there are some beautiful areas in Portland, Oregon😍🤓, and the landscape is beautiful as well, also what’s the name of that song ?
Aw I got married at Overlook House....and I live in the Richmond neighborhood. I will say...our public transportation is not reliable at all. I was surprised you mentioned it was one of the best in the country!
Hey Sindy. Thanks. I haven't stopped, I just have been getting more traction with these lists. I will probably start doing a mix of these and vlogs in June.
Hillsdale is nice on so many stats it had to be #1. Multnomah Village is right next door and is a great place. But I also went off area's I knew about. haven't spent much time in Multnomah Village. It will get on the list of best downtown in a suburbs. Thanks for watching.
I grew up in the Alameda area. Back in the 60s it was a good place to be a kid. Now I hate the traffic. The freeways haven't changed much since the 60s except for the Fremont bridge. I don't like the home prices, property taxes, tri-met taxes and especially Oregon's high income tax. I/we moved our company and ourselves across the river. While there isn't much going on in Vancouver it is a much better place for business and professionals.
I have lived in southern california for 14 years. I don't know who here is saying Ala-may-duh. We all say Ala-mee-duh. I don't know where he is getting that. haha
I have heard it both ways but most people in Portland call the street cooch. I was told that the person the street was named after pronounced his name that way.
Eastmoreland/Westmoreland (Reed College), Alberta Arts, Brooklyn, Multnomah Village, Kerns, Ladd’s Addition, Ladd’s Addition- and if you want expensive, there’s Dunthorp.
You should have included Waverly because not only does it have access to a golf course, pool, and the willamette river, it has the actual lowest crime rate in Portland.
Ok, but when talking about Overlook you make mention that it's next to a nice little neighborhood called Kenton...a town that made your 10 Worst Portland Neighborhoods list. Which is it? 😐 I love your videos btw. Just found your channel today and immediately subscribed. Good stuff.
We're in the second heat wave this summer. 90+ bumping into 100. That's Fahrenheit not Celsius - but for someone who prefers cooler weather that doesn't matter :P Summers here are less intense than New Mexico, not humid like Florida. But no rain at all or a rare sprinkle, until October.
I'm in Portland right now and I really like it out here. It's so charming and pleasant. I'm visiting from San Francisco and I'm looking for a new city to move to. Portland might be one of my options. Maybe. There are other cities I have to see to make my choice.
If you are visiting from SF you will love it here. It has the same feel. More like the feel before the tech boom. And it is a hell of a lot cheaper to live.
Your videos are so entertaining and informative. I found them while looking for something else and have watched several. I am not subscribing since I have no plans of moving to Portland from Texas. Thanks for the videos.
Thanks for watching. You can still subscribe. I am working towards a comedy/travel type channel. Not just relocation. Either way, I am glad you enjoyed them.
I agree with most of your choices but I believe your estimates of prices is way way too low. Irvington and Alameda had average home sale prices in excess of $750,000 last year and I am sure that Laurelhurst, Goose Hollow and NW Portland are not far behind. I think you should consider Eliot as an up and coming neighborhood, its right next to Irvington and even closer to downtown. Eliot still has some value opportunities and it is one of the fastest growing restaurant and brewery locations in the city.
I don't understand why anyone wants to live in the heights. They are so far removed. Council Crest and the hill behind the NW area have better accessibility to the city. If you are in the heights you are closer to the suburbs. I don't get it, but maybe it's just my preferences.
In downtown Portland I gave a homeless man a cigarette and couple dollars. Two weeks later, I saw him again around the same time (5am) and he gave me a cigarette and a couple dollars. He was paying me back and I wasn't even expecting that. It was pretty cool.
Because he is a professional beggar and makes 100 dollars a day. Wake up.
And the rest of the homeless are either tweakers or junkies.

it's a hell hole ( stop making it look attractive for shitty californians to infest our city )

I don't know where he is getting that. haha
Erin Keegan , we pronounced it the same way you do.
People say "couch"; Portlanders say "Coooch" as in vagina.
I have heard it both ways but most people in Portland call the street cooch. I was told that the person the street was named after pronounced his name that way.
I am thinking about moving to Vancouver, WA from the northeast. Can you say more about what you like about Vancouver?
So helpful as a Realtor, thank you!!!
Eastmoreland/Westmoreland (Reed College), Alberta Arts, Brooklyn, Multnomah Village, Kerns, Ladd’s Addition, Ladd’s Addition- and if you want expensive, there’s Dunthorp.
I lived in Alberta Arts. I loved it.
You should have included Waverly because not only does it have access to a golf course, pool, and the willamette river, it has the actual lowest crime rate in Portland.
I didn't know it was a neighborhood, always thought it was just a country club/ golf course.
Woodstock, great fish & chips window at Portland Fish Market, Ottos, nice people who like to walk around. Just saying.
EXACTLY
Fried fish and fried potatoes. Whoa! So amazing! People who walk around and around, then sleep on the ground.
Frankovitch Grimowski ottos is the best
I visited Portland in July and, yeah, the people at Otto's are sweet. I ate there a lot. The Thanksgiving sandwich w/ stuffing & cranberry. Yum!
I can't believe you didn't mention Lake Oswego
Lake No-Negro?
Can u do a video on clatskanie and Westport? The country life small town farming community
I love the sound of the typewriter...
Ok, but when talking about Overlook you make mention that it's next to a nice little neighborhood called Kenton...a town that made your 10 Worst Portland Neighborhoods list. Which is it? 😐 I love your videos btw. Just found your channel today and immediately subscribed. Good stuff.
may I suggest to do a top 10 reasons to move to eastern washington state.
Should I move to Portland?
Do weather in Portland.. I wanna move there because I love the rain
Tevin its amazing the winter is nice and calming the schools are amazing but the Summers can be nightmares
Nathan Moss back at you 10 year old
Do you like it when it blows in sideways and gets under your clothing? How about just gray drizzle for months? You like mold and mildew - we got it!
YOU WOULD HATE IT SEPTEMBER TO FEBUARY IT RAINS ALMOST EVERY DAY
Great. Really great.. I am still looking for a place to rent apt in Portland Oregon..
And to be make sure it is a safe for me
Troutdale and Damascus also nice neighborhoods.
Without Sellwood not even on the list I have to wonder about your expertise.
They all suck unless you're old, or starting a family. You can watch my videos to learn the truth about Portland.
What if you wanna move to Oregon??
It's interesting that most of them were East side neighborhoods. if you had mentioned St John's I'd call you crazy (I'll admit it's improved a ton).
Rick and Rodney Travel Channel St. John’s is the hood brodie😂😭
Happy valley is very nice even though it’s in clackamas it’s only a 10 min drive from my house I spend a lot of time there
Lake Oswegon had to be on the list
Thats a city.
I hate how much I love this city and as much as I try I just can’t seem to quit it
I'm kind of surprised that Sellwood wasn't on your list.
honoshikun Maybe too far south? I like Sellwood, I ran the west end of the new bridge build. Needs more places to eat though.
Wow you sure get a lot of angry comments.
OK I did.
@2:28 it's right next to a really cool neighborhood called .... ARBOR LODGE (which is between Overlook & Kenton) ;-)
The video is a year and a half old...
How did the Pearl District not make your list?
Don't make fun of hillbillies, they're some of my favorite relatives.
I love the Milwaukie area 😀
No one can afford to live in any of these neighborhoods
Tony Raffetto clearly someone can if people live there.
Tony Raffetto Yes they can? I live in Alameda.
Tony Raffetto People with higher IQs and ambition live here. Safe areas=higher IQ and more income
I grew up in Irvington
The rich kids love in alemeda and get to go to the good schools. I went to middle school with the Alemeda kids.
You should check the prescott neighborhood.. House there are over 100+ years old and still look like the day they were built..
Include locations of neighborhoods on a map throughout your future videos please :)
please some one tell me what song this is
What about lake Oswego?
What happened to Woodstock ???
I don't understand why anyone wants to live in the heights. They are so far removed. Council Crest and the hill behind the NW area have better accessibility to the city. If you are in the heights you are closer to the suburbs. I don't get it, but maybe it's just my preferences.
Sellwood?
i live downtown.. $1350 for a one bedroom, location's great but damn my place is not even nice lol
