Great video. I tore my EZ down for the first time and gave it a good cleaning. Ran into trouble getting the slide back on, and this video told me what I was doing wrong. I was holding the grip safety down while putting the slide on and the safety was keeping the slide from going all the way back on the body.

Great video,easy to follow instructions for beginners and he also tells you what Not to do when putting the slide back on.This is the way you would clean most semiautomatics,some might disassemble slightly different like Glocks and Rugers but as far as cleaning,the same.👍

Thanks so much for the comment! It is definitely a nice gun. I got it for my wife, and she now has the 9mm EZ, the .380 EZ as well as the Ruger .380 Security Lite Rack. All are very easy to manipulate.

One thing I have yet to see on the Shield EZ is with the thumb safety you can load and unload with the safety on. I have three 1 9mm and 2 380s. For me I have never seen a safer gun. At times I can not work my other pistols, but have no trouble with any of the three EZ's There is no trouble with thumbing the safety when pulling it out. The tab that shows the gun is load came with a red dot I changed it to white, that makes it stand out so much better. I still put my guns up when little kids are around, but think a little one would have a hard time getting all the safeties on to shoot a EZ with a thumb safety. I want them to stay with my family long after I am gone.
This is THE BEST instructional video! Please do one for a Glock42 380. I can't grip mine well enough, I keep hurting myself trying to take the slide off, plus it stove-pipes when I shoot it despite having "textbook" aim. I hope I don't have a Glock lemon.
Stephanie, thanks for watching the video! I have so many gun cleaning kits and all of them are good. However, most come with a lot of items that I never use. I would get an inexpensive kit made for your particular caliber of firearm. I prefer to use Boresnakes for the barrel, a good gun cleaning brush and Original Gun Oil to clean and lube. I use a lot of swabs and rags (cut-up T-shirts). Dave
Great video thank you for this! How often should I be cleaning my gun? I just shot off about 45 rounds today and I had shot off 50 rounds a handful of months back so I’m thinking it’s probably time to clean it.
David, Yes, I would clean it after shooting. Also, if you carry the gun, you want to clean it on a regular basis just because dirt, grime, sweat, moisture, etc., can get on the gun and cause issues such as corrosion. Thanks for the question! Dave
Hoppes #9 is great stuff! I use it as well. The Original Gun Oil does not have an odor to it, I can use it in the house an my chemical-sensitive mother-in-law has no issues! I now use it more often than Hoppes. Dave

Use tungsten disulfide (Ws2)! Dry powder, slipperiest thing on the planet, sheds carbon, bonds to metal by rubbing it on, doesn't attract dirt, doesn't come off, withstands 100,000 lbs. of force, eliminates wear. I run my guns dry with NO problems or signs of wear. Better than oil (oil attracts dirt) but if you are worried of what I say, Ws2 also blends well with oil and can be used together. I've been using it in my car's engine oil for 12 years and the engine is like brand new (no wear!!). Nasa uses Tungsten disulfide (Ws2) on the Mars rover. Great for guns! I use a short bristle 1/4 in. paint brush and a q tip to rub it on.

Where did you get that green brush? I’m uncertain what brush to get for cleaning my EZ. Some look like they could scratch things. I am considering getting a common tooth brush
Matt, Thanks for the question and watching the video! A toothbrush will work just fine! I am not sure where I got the brush, I have had it for years. You definitely want something nylon with medium stiffness. Dave
when my bar is locked back, i see that the recoil spring is pretty cruddy, which you don't see when all the parts are disassembled. should i clean all that grease on it and relube it or leave it be?
Kurt, thanks for the great question! I would lock the slide back and take a cotton swab and clean all that crud off. Then lube with a very small amount of oil. I would place a drop of oil on a clean swab and just put a super light coating on the guide rod. Dave
No, I didn't read all the comments. (If someone has mentioned "NOT to depress the palm safety while releasing the upper". It will cause the upper and lower to jam if you do so.)

1) Is there a functions check for this weapon? Is it a big deal to dry fire the weapon? 2) CLP an ideal cleaner? 3) The manual has an inspection check for this gun. When checking the bore for obstructions, are we supposed to look through the barrel with a flash light? 4) Also in the inspection check, it says to make sure the firing pin isn't protruding out from the hole it is in. Why is that?
Thanks for the questions! 1) There is no "functions check" in the manual. I will be doing a quick video of function checking the Shield EZ shortly. Yes, it is ok to dry fire the gun when fully assembled. 2) Most CLP gun oils will work great for most gun cleaning. However, if your gun is really dirty you may have better results with a solvent such as Hoppes No. 9. 3) During inspection, I would just make sure you can see inside most of the barrel, but make sure you do not point it at yourself or anyone else while doing so. If a flashlight helps, by all means use one. 4) If the firing pin is protruding from the breech face, it could possibly fire a round when you close the slide with a round in the chamber. A protruding firing pin is a safety problem that a gun smith or the Manufacturer should address. Dave

I was told if you use it on other parts of the weapon it could damage the metal. 3) So I look through the barrel as best as you can even if you can't see all the way through it (from the breech end)? The inspection check is supposed to be done whenever the weapon changes hands, is cleaned, etc. So it will be done frequently. Seems inconvenient to use a flash light every single time. I will just take your advice and look through the breech end of the barrel and see as much as I can through the bore. 4) Noted. My dad has owned pistols for decades and he has never heard of the firing pin check before. I'm glad I ask you about it. 5) Does the 2.0 version vary much from the 1.0? Are there major differences? How about between the Plus or 380 version?

I have been using that for years mostly on the internal parts and I’ve never seen it damage any metal parts. I would NOT use it on any plastic or polymer parts however. 4) I have never heard of it before either so I wonder if there was an issue with this particular model which caused them to put it in the manual. 5) I will have to research the difference between the original and the 2.0, but I do have the .380 EZ and except for the chamber size, it is exactly the same.
@@davesgunchannel So to be clear, when assembling the recoil spring assembly, the sides must be flat at the breech end and the top and bottom must be round? If you installed that incorrectly, what will happen?
Even if the gun oil is non toxic I would still recommend wearing gloves due to the lead, copper and whatever other chemicals that would still be present. Nice video though.
I usually only use the Boresnake. It has copper brushes built into it. If I am cleaning a Super Dirty barrel, I may use a regular gun brush but I keep my guns pretty clean so that is rare. Thanks for the question! Dave
Jehan, thanks for the question! I do not believe it matters whether the safety is on or off. I have removed the slide with the safety in both positions. The Smith & Wesson manual does suggest placing the safety in the "safe" position at the beginning of the process, and I believe it is just to make it as safe as possible just in case the chamber was not cleared. Do NOT buy the Original Gun oil product. They say they ship in 2 days. it took them a week to ship the products.....that was July 23rd.....I live in Reno, NV, and still haven't received the product. Have no idea where is or when it will arrive. They did charge my account as soon as I ordered the product.
I ordered the gun oil June 28 and received it on July 16. I had to contact the company via email after a week and a half to find out if it had shipped because it seemed to be taking longer than expected. The gun oil itself is very good. Used it for the first time. No smell, seems to do a good job removing the gunk, and wipes off clean.

I guess I’m biased, but all I use is Hoppes #9. I’m 50 years old and have been using it since I was around 8 years old.

Frank, thanks for the comment! I really like the Shield EZ. Had it to the range a bunch of times with no issues and it shoots pretty accurately. When reassembling My slide sometimes gets caught before it can go past the lever to lock it in place do you have any advice on how to fix my issue?
Be careful not to press on the grip safety while you are putting the slide back on.
I was worried I wouldn’t be able to see details because the ez is all black. Your camera angles were perfect to see details I was wanting. Also thanks for explaining why you use what you used.

Where did you get that green brush? I’m uncertain what brush to get for cleaning my EZ. Some look like they could scratch things. I am considering getting a common tooth brush
Matt, Thanks for the question and watching the video! A toothbrush will work just fine! I am not sure where I got the brush, I have had it for years. You definitely want something nylon with medium stiffness.

when my bar is locked back, i see that the recoil spring is pretty cruddy, which you don't see when all the parts are disassembled. should i clean all that grease on it and relube it or leave it be?
Kurt, thanks for the great question! I would lock the slide back and take a cotton swab and clean all that crud off. Then lube with a very small amount of oil. I would place a drop of oil on a clean swab and just put a super light coating on the guide rod.

1) Is there a functions check for this weapon? Is it a big deal to dry fire the weapon?
2) CLP an ideal cleaner?
3) The manual has an inspection check for this gun. When checking the bore for obstructions, are we supposed to look through the barrel with a flash light?
4) Also in the inspection check, it says to make sure the firing pin isn't protruding out from the hole it is in. Why is that?

1) There is no "functions check" in the manual. I will be doing a quick video of function checking the Shield EZ shortly. Yes, it is ok to dry fire the gun when fully assembled.
2) Most CLP gun oils will work great for most gun cleaning. However, if your gun is really dirty you may have better results with a solvent such as Hoppes No. 9.
3) During inspection, I would just make sure you can see inside most of the barrel, but make sure you do not point it at yourself or anyone else while doing so. If a flashlight helps, by all means use one.
4) If the firing pin is protruding from the breech face, it could possibly fire a round when you close the slide with a round in the chamber. A protruding firing pin is a safety problem that a gun smith or the Manufacturer should address.

2) Hoppes No. 9 is a Bore cleaner right? I was told if you use it on other parts of the weapon it could damage the metal.
3) So I look through the barrel as best as you can even if you can't see all the way through it (from the breech end)? The inspection check is supposed to be done whenever the weapon changes hands, is cleaned, etc. So it will be done frequently. Seems inconvenient to use a flash light every single time. I will just take your advice and look through the breech end of the barrel and see as much as I can through the bore.
4) Noted. My dad has owned pistols for decades and he has never heard of the firing pin check before. I'm glad I ask you about it.
5) Does the 2.0 version vary much from the 1.0? Are there major differences? How about between the Plus or 380 version?

2) yes, Hoppes No 9 is a bore cleaner. I have been using that for years mostly on the internal parts and I’ve never seen it damage any metal parts. I would NOT use it on any plastic or polymer parts however.
4) I have never heard of it before either so I wonder if there was an issue with this particular model which caused them to put it in the manual.
5) I will have to research the difference between the original and the 2.0, but I do have the .380 EZ and except for the chamber size, it is exactly the same.

Even if the gun oil is non toxic I would still recommend wearing gloves due to the lead, copper and whatever other chemicals that would still be present. Nice video though.

Do you only use a bore snake or do you also use brushes?
I usually only use the Boresnake. It has copper brushes built into it. If I am cleaning a Super Dirty barrel, I may use a regular gun brush but I keep my guns pretty clean so that is rare. Thanks for the question!

why does the safety have to be engaged when removing the slide?
Jehan, thanks for the question! I do not believe it matters whether the safety is on or off. I have removed the slide with the safety in both positions. The Smith & Wesson manual does suggest placing the safety in the "safe" position at the beginning of the process, and I believe it is just to make it as safe as possible just in case the chamber was not cleared.

I don't use oil or grease on any of my guns I have guns that over 100 years old not one drop oil or grease and work flawlessly until this day

Do NOT buy the Original Gun oil product. They say they ship in 2 days. it took them a week to ship the products.....that was July 23rd.....I live in Reno, NV, and still haven't received the product. Have no idea where is or when it will arrive. They did charge my account as soon as I ordered the product.
I ordered the gun oil June 28 and received it on July 16. I had to contact the company via email after a week and a half to find out if it had shipped because it seemed to be taking longer than expected. The gun oil itself is very good. Used it for the first time. No smell, seems to do a good job removing the gunk, and wipes off clean.
