Awesome video thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it
A new vlog and new job today, April's turning out to be a good month so far for me, thanks again for the info keep it up.
Can’t wait to see this one
Beautiful looking knife. Can't wait to see how you finish it out. Great job sir
Great info - Thanks! I recently bought 10 farrier rasps for $5 with the intent of making knives. In the process of rearranging the basement so I have a space where I can contain the dust & grime of a metal & woodworking shop. Hope to be grinding knives soon. Stay safe!!!
Awesome informative video! I especially liked the tip about using the template to drill your holes due to the challenges of using a rasp! Cool knife man, thank you from Aleeknives!
Looks great and looks like it would make a nice skinning knife for sure.
I've now have finely used new steel but cutting my teeth and partially successful with mystery steel both great and poor results and my worst was bearing steel and now understand why not to use bearing steel but USA marked files are usually good for me.
Always love your videos and grinding skills and I need your knowledge and you are helping.
I don't have that low radius sanders but 1x21 x1 inch. that's helpful.
Thanks
I'ma sucker for rasp and file knifes!! And hey, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one running a grinder without a guard! 😁
I bought some centering bits at HF the other day, and they are excellent for drilling without a punch, and I've gotten where I also use them for champering my holes. Have a good evening and stay safe!
J.R. Hewitt No guard here as well.
Once again love the curves man that knife is going to look great. I've just started or should i say trying to make knives and i appreciate all the details in your video's thanks again.
Big fan from Belgium
Wow wow wow. That is going to look sick. Just did a kydex sheath for a bud that's a knife from a file. Fourth attempt at kydexing if that's a thing
Digging your Vlogs and other Content Brother!
Came back to this Series looking for info on the Annealing/Normalizing process. Specifically for a Rasp Knife.
Are you looking for a specific temp/color in the Metal before shutting down the gas and closing the furnace?
Best Regards from Southeast Texas!
I'm pretty much looking for a bright red to low orange color. I'm in North Texas just by the Red River.
I had a farrier friend give me 2 5gal buckets full of old rasps. I threw about 25 in a hot campfire and pulled them out the next day after the fire burned out. It makes it much easier to cut and grind later. I did some quench tests and I found that SOME of the blanks had to be water quenched in order to harden.....same brand of rasps same process but some wouldn't harden with an oil quench.
Yup I have had a lot of Tools that I've made into knives be this way. Same tools and some needed a oil quench and some needed a water quench.
@@theriversexperience9383 boy it sure is sketchy quenching in water lol
What kind of steel was the rasp? How did you know what the heat treat recipe was? Really, those are meant to be rhetorical. I make it a practice not to use mystery steel for making knives. The 2 exceptions are leaf springs which are generally 5160 and rasps which I leave in a hardened state. Carbide bits will work for the holes and you have to take extra care not to overheat and ruin the temper
Hi Eric, how do you know what temperature you need to anneal the rasp?
Regards
Andy
Basically you can just bring it up to non-magnetic and then let it cool slowly.

What is the name of the style for that knife and where can I get that pattern
This is a drop point skinner. This is my own design and the pattern isn't available anywhere at this time.
Are the rasps hard to find ?
Not really, you can find them at scrap metal yards, garage sales, and farm and tractor supply stores.
How much for a knife like that...$$
