    Very good explanation of rough grinding prior to heat treating. Looking forward to seeing edge between flat and bevel disappear. Would be interesting to know how much time you spend hand sanding. Thanks for the little tips and tricks. God bless. 👌

    Hi Erick - i like the pattern of the farriers rasps very much and i`m looking forward to the finished handles - but today another question... Do you want to tell us something about the mjolnir you were around your neck? i`m interested where you got it from

    • @theriversexperience9383
      @theriversexperience9383  3 года назад +1

      A good friend of mine forged the Mjolnir that I wear. I gave him the first belt grinder that I made and worked with him to produce better bevels on his knives, he made this for me afterwards. I wear it every day. Brotherhood is everything.

    Nice Looking Knife! How did you manage to drill holes, is the rasp not hardened?

    • @theriversexperience9383
      @theriversexperience9383  3 года назад

      I annealed it before drilling them, it makes it way easier to work with. You have to re-heat treat it after it tough.

    couple questions. first one.... what grit did you take your initial bevels too. You only showed 40, but you have a shiny looking blade after the first day. Second what angle do you typically grind to for a final edge? I know this one is going to almost ZERO, but what is your norm? I like 20° which is 10 per side obviously. One last one.... what is the point of the half second water quench ?

    • @theriversexperience9383
      @theriversexperience9383  3 года назад +1

      On the first day that was only a 40 grit belt and a medium scotchbrite belt. If you can keep your bevels smooth and consistent then they look like that even with just those 2 belts. When it comes to my edges I don't go by any particular degree, I go by eye. I've used so many knives over the past 20 years that I know by eye what to go for depending on the particular knife and its intended purpose. As for the quench 1095 requires a fast quenching oil and I was using peanut oil which isn't a fast quench oil, the water was used to fast quench just the edge instead of the entire blade, this helps to minimize the chance of cracks.

    Nice video! Nice knives! Some Great advice. I really like your shapes of knives, then you look on the wall above the bench and all the patterns you have! How great is that. Where did you get all those? those would be nice to have, would love some info on that if you could do that. I've built 2 knives in my life, now I'm really wanting to move forward on building knives. I'll be watching lot more of your videos I've subscribed. I have a forge coming, 2x72 belt grinder. I have a fab shop but I'm retired now and want to do something a little different. I'm liking the knife thing. Really enjoyed your knowledge along with your video! Nicely done. Just like to have all those knife templates you have, hope you can dial me in. We have horses and a farrier so I'll be asking her if she has any old used files I have a bunch too. Thank again for making this video.

      All of those are my previous knife builds. I put all my knife designs on wood and cut them out for future reference. Those are only 1/4 of what I actually have but I ran out of hooks. I make the templates so that I can hold them in my hand and make sure that the proportions are correct.

      @@theriversexperience9383 Wow! I tell you what, your in the right place, your talented all over on this knife making. So if you draw them all out on a little thicker paper and send them to me, I will pay you! I would love those choices you have there. I'm an old fart and would just like to have a bundle of patterns so I can say I'm gonna build this one this week. When your done building your knives they just look comfortable as all heck! But hey if you can that would be awesome, if you can't, I get it, I will be lookin for some. Love watching your videos!

    The crisp saber grind looks good but its hard to beat a full convex lol. I think the handles will be unique but im stuck on that white pearl kirinite look with brass liners and brass lanyard tube, with that high polish blade just has a certain elegance imo. Im ready to see it all finished up tho, I have no doubts itll be outstanding!
