My take - Dan Neil let us down today. He could well have been sent off for the first yellow card, then when the ball has gone dead swears & rages at the ref. Correct second yellow, no discipline, changed the whole outcome of the game. Dan Neil cost us x3 points, not the ref!

I like Raymondo's story about the watch. I have a watch representing my son. I don't care if the building is blazing, I'm not leaving without that watch. I fully understand why he spent a lot of money repairing it. He's right btw, that was a lot of money back then particularly for a young person to spend on a present.

I know managers are reluctant to change a winning team but I was disappointed he hadn't freshened things up a bit & the flat 1st half performance proved my point. I'd have started Rusyn, Aochiche & maybe Bennette with maybe Burstow, Bellingam & Ba on the bench. 3 games in a week always is a step too far for some players.
I think we should've made a change up front, I know Burstow is a young lad but honestly he's probably the only striker that doesn't look like he's ever gonna score, I hope he proves me wrong but at the moment I don't know what he's actually bringing to the team, Rusyn did more in 15 minutes but the problem is that Mowbray seems to see Rusyn as more of a winger than a striker so in reality we've got 3 inexperienced strikers that still haven't got a goal yet, I like Bennette but personally I don't think Mowbray rates him cos the lad hardly gets any minutes off the bench, when we do return from the international break Aouchiche definitely deserves a chance cos he's impressed a lot from the bench
If burstow took a shot from outside the box he could easily score.. stood behind the goal at warm up the other week and took a hit from him.. I can only describe the ball as going 100mph as it hit my chest! Stop trying to walk it on the box and take a shot! Nothing to loose

Cheer up Terry. We are going to have games like this throughout the season. I'll take one like this out of every six as long as we win the other five. Two weeks to rest up and forget today. Then off we go again playing like we know we can. The most talented squad in this division including Leicester. If we get a fair, unbiased referee then we can beat anyone.
Leicester City fan here (again!). As you probably remember I have a soft spot for Sunderland having lived there for 3 years. Here's my take on the yellow cards for what it's worth. The first one could easily have been a red. The second one was ridiculous but if the rules say that you get booked for gobbing off at a ref then I suppose the red was inevitable. Very harsh though. The ref could have had a quiet word and left it at that. Early days. All up for grabs.

Can't blame the referee, if he's applying the rules, no matter what you think of them. A learning experience for Dan Neil, there. As you say, we're a young team and there's always a chance something like that will happen. Hopefully, we'll bounce back I bet Southampton felt the same the other week, and they were playing with eleven men. Doesn't make them a bad team

Clarke brought down twice by the same player when he’d had the beating of him and not even a talking to? Diving looking for decisions and if it’s not a foul it’s a card for simulation. No consistency at all… we were shocking but impossible to say whether we’d have ended the game the same way after Neil was sent off for swearing lol… look forward to seeing how many other officials get the cards out when they’re hounded about decisions and bad language is used- you can see it on televised games all the time but rarely sending off or bookings
We had an atrocious ref the other night Terry against Birmingham city, never a penalty in a million years we took the lead then Birmingham got one back, then they had a penalty to take the lead then we folded like a pack of cards, play like Brazil one week, play like a bunch of clowns the next, so yeah I know how you feel when losing to your close rivals from down the road, it's frustrating, but as they say move on to the next game, it's a long season
the officials were poor in the game, there 3rd goal was offside I'll admit that but IMO it wasn't the officials that cost us the game it was Neil, he's already on a yellow card, keep your cool and then just before half time he starts swearing at the official, yes the officials are very inconsistent when it comes to these new rules but he should know better, it's a shame as well cos after a slow start we were starting to grow into the game, looking the better side and then that happens and that's why we won't get top 2, we are far to inconsistent, far to many individual errors and stupidity and lacking experience in certain moments, I think we'll definitely get top 6 but top 2 no chance, despite the red card I think Mowbray got wrong in the 2nd half, putting Clarke LB was ridiculous and that caused a lot of our problems, didn't quite get it right and also Hume was absolutely awful today even before the red card, I like Hume but this season he's had more bad games than good games, I've said it before and I'll say it again he's starting to become a liability, the sooner we get the likes of Alese, Cirkin and Pembele back the better, the only positives I can take from today was despite conceding 4 goals I thought Ballard was outstanding didn't put a foot wrong and I thought Seelt was very good when he came on for Huggins, he was one of the few in the 2nd half showing a bit of fight

I saw what you did with the Jason Roberts as goal scorer....on the game I think Mowbray should have changed it up a bit from the start, though you hate the international break it does give us the opportunity to get players back fit.
Very disappointing to see some Boro fans behaving like this. At least its not as bad as the Sunderland fans at the Riverside last season. Boro won 1 v 0. Some Sunderland fans smashed up Boro cars and smashed child car seats and posted pictures of the damage with the tag 2 v 1 to sunderland ha ha. Can't condone the behaviour of either. Red card seemed very harsh, I saw the highlights he was already on a yellow for a bad tackle. All he did was charge over to the referee aggressively so very harsh. But a great win for Boro.

It would be interesting to know what Neil said to the ref that lead to his second yellow card - it's a derby day and emotions are running high and the ref should take that into account and not place himself in the center of attention and ruin the match with a questionable sending off. Tragic. Bad day by all accounts, injury to Huggins, red card Neil, 4-0 defeat to Boro and now a 50% losing home record. Loved Raymondo's watch stories, in my workplace me and a couple of colleagues have Tissot-Tuesdays...which means you must have a Tissot watch on Tuesdays. Apart from that I am a Seiko-guy.
He shouted... "that was a fucking foul" apparently but also ran towards the ref throwing his arms. I think he was angry about the Tommy Smith challenge which initiated the break. You just can't do it on a yellow

I felt first half it was a fairly even game, though I think we edged it in terms of having better chances. Neil could have been sent off for his foul tbh, his studs were showing and normally that would be grounds for a red, he was lucky he didn't make a connection (Watford player was the same but connected and got sent off.) So I'd say we were lucky in that regard. The ref was awful though, can't deny that. Neil shouldn't be swearing at the ref but no way should he be getting a yellow card for that. The thing I'm most disappointed with though wasn't the ref nor Neil but how our heads dropped completely. We didn't have the right frame of mind once that first goal went in. Passing was sloppy. Defending was awful. Even with ten men, you've got to make sure you defend and pass well. Boro seized upon the opportunity and destroyed us. The red card changed the game though. So I'm not going to be too critical of the lads. We've got to refocus, get some lads back from injury and go at it again after the break. Got to change this home form around.

Another example of appauling decision making throughout this fixture not only the ref who was a disgrace. Firstly team formation/selection. Playing Ba infront of Burstow was tactically poor. Aloud Burstow to disappear AGAIN leaving our center mid vunerable to a passing side cutting us open at will. Dan Neil should be docked wages for his foul mouth rant...getting too big for his boots. Jobe is slow around the pitch combining that with him looking tired sloppy passing crept into his game. When Huggins went off we fell apart. We did learn that Hume at left back is a no go... his worst game in a Sunderland shirt. Moving Clarke to left back...omg... never again. Should have left Hume right back Seelt and Ballard in the middle and O'Nien left back...sorted! When Neil sent off needed legs in the middle in front of back 4 so he brings on Aouchiche and attacking midfield player?? Stick O'Nien alongside Jobe and Bring Triantis on (Defender) Should have taken Ba off and put Burstow up front to run his legs off then bring on Bennette or Ruysn when he tired. We needed to contain the game not go and win it! Was our turn to park the bus and catch opposition on the break. Sorry but blaming the three coaches at the side of the pitch Mr Mowbray included. Boy to we need Ekwah, Pritchard. (Gooch and Batth would have come in handy yesterday) Lots to think about. We will see what happens in the coming months. 🤔
If we can get beat off Cardiff and Boro at home and people talk about getting promoted, then they need their heads read. Can you imagine us entertaining man city, Liverpool or god forbid the scum. I didn't expect to win with ten men but I certainly didn't expect them to completely collapse either.

Leicester City fan here (again!). As you probably remember I have a soft spot for Sunderland having lived there for 3 years. Here's my take on the yellow cards for what it's worth. The first one could easily have been a red. The second one was ridiculous but if the rules say that you get booked for gobbing off at a ref then I suppose the red was inevitable. Very harsh though. The ref could have had a quiet word and left it at that. Early days. All up for grabs.

As you say, we're a young team and there's always a chance something like that will happen. Hopefully, we'll bounce back I bet Southampton felt the same the other week, and they were playing with eleven men. Doesn't make them a bad team

Don’t mind the ref applying the rules but he didn’t do that consistently did he? Clear offside for the third goal! Clarke brought down twice by the same player when he’d had the beating of him and not even a talking to? Diving looking for decisions and if it’s not a foul it’s a card for simulation. No consistency at all… we were shocking but impossible to say whether we’d have ended the game the same way after Neil was sent off for swearing lol… look forward to seeing how many other officials get the cards out when they’re hounded about decisions and bad language is used- you can see it on televised games all the time but rarely sending off or bookings

We had an atrocious ref the other night Terry against Birmingham city, never a penalty in a million years we took the lead then Birmingham got one back, then they had a penalty to take the lead then we folded like a pack of cards, play like Brazil one week, play like a bunch of clowns the next, so yeah I know how you feel when losing to your close rivals from down the road, it's frustrating, but as they say move on to the next game, it's a long season

the officials were poor in the game, there 3rd goal was offside I'll admit that but IMO it wasn't the officials that cost us the game it was Neil, he's already on a yellow card, keep your cool and then just before half time he starts swearing at the official, yes the officials are very inconsistent when it comes to these new rules but he should know better, it's a shame as well cos after a slow start we were starting to grow into the game, looking the better side and then that happens and that's why we won't get top 2, we are far to inconsistent, far to many individual errors and stupidity and lacking experience in certain moments, I think we'll definitely get top 6 but top 2 no chance, despite the red card I think Mowbray got wrong in the 2nd half, putting Clarke LB was ridiculous and that caused a lot of our problems, didn't quite get it right and also Hume was absolutely awful today even before the red card, I like Hume but this season he's had more bad games than good games, I've said it before and I'll say it again he's starting to become a liability, the sooner we get the likes of Alese, Cirkin and Pembele back the better, the only positives I can take from today was despite conceding 4 goals I thought Ballard was outstanding didn't put a foot wrong and I thought Seelt was very good when he came on for Huggins, he was one of the few in the 2nd half showing a bit of fight

I saw what you did with the Jason Roberts as goal scorer....on the game I think Mowbray should have changed it up a bit from the start, though you hate the international break it does give us the opportunity to get players back fit.

Very disappointing to see some Boro fans behaving like this. At least its not as bad as the Sunderland fans at the Riverside last season. Boro won 1 v 0. Some Sunderland fans smashed up Boro cars and smashed child car seats and posted pictures of the damage with the tag 2 v 1 to sunderland ha ha.

Red card seemed very harsh, I saw the highlights he was already on a yellow for a bad tackle. All he did was charge over to the referee aggressively so very harsh. But a great win for Boro.

It would be interesting to know what Neil said to the ref that lead to his second yellow card - it's a derby day and emotions are running high and the ref should take that into account and not place himself in the center of attention and ruin the match with a questionable sending off. Tragic. Bad day by all accounts, injury to Huggins, red card Neil, 4-0 defeat to Boro and now a 50% losing home record. Loved Raymondo's watch stories, in my workplace me and a couple of colleagues have Tissot-Tuesdays...which means you must have a Tissot watch on Tuesdays. Apart from that I am a Seiko-guy.

@@konradtank7970 he'd already booked Greenwood for the same thing early in the half. He set his stall out and couldn't really then not book Neil.
I felt first half it was a fairly even game, though I think we edged it in terms of having better chances. Neil could have been sent off for his foul tbh, his studs were showing and normally that would be grounds for a red, he was lucky he didn't make a connection (Watford player was the same but connected and got sent off.) So I'd say we were lucky in that regard. The ref was awful though, can't deny that. Neil shouldn't be swearing at the ref but no way should he be getting a yellow card for that.
The thing I'm most disappointed with though wasn't the ref nor Neil but how our heads dropped completely. We didn't have the right frame of mind once that first goal went in. Passing was sloppy. Defending was awful. Even with ten men, you've got to make sure you defend and pass well. Boro seized upon the opportunity and destroyed us. The red card changed the game though. So I'm not going to be too critical of the lads. We've got to refocus, get some lads back from injury and go at it again after the break. Got to change this home form around.

Another example of appauling decision making throughout this fixture not only the ref who was a disgrace. Firstly team formation/selection. Playing Ba infront of Burstow was tactically poor. Aloud Burstow to disappear AGAIN leaving our center mid vunerable to a passing side cutting us open at will. Dan Neil should be docked wages for his foul mouth rant...getting too big for his boots. Jobe is slow around the pitch combining that with him looking tired sloppy passing crept into his game. When Huggins went off we fell apart. We did learn that Hume at left back is a no go... his worst game in a Sunderland shirt. Moving Clarke to left back...omg... never again. Should have left Hume right back Seelt and Ballard in the middle and O'Nien left back...sorted! When Neil sent off needed legs in the middle in front of back 4 so he brings on Aouchiche and attacking midfield player??
Stick O'Nien alongside Jobe and Bring Triantis on (Defender) Should have taken Ba off and put Burstow up front to run his legs off then bring on Bennette or Ruysn when he tired. We needed to contain the game not go and win it! Was our turn to park the bus and catch opposition on the break. Sorry but blaming the three coaches at the side of the pitch Mr Mowbray included. Boy to we need Ekwah, Pritchard. (Gooch and Batth would have come in handy yesterday) Lots to think about. We will see what happens in the coming months. 🤔
