Air dry earthen clay will crack if it’s wrapped around something like that because it shrinks as it dries. The yogurt container has no give, so the clay has no place to go and the only thing it can do is crack. Also, any time you join two pieces of earthen clay together, you need to need to score the two pieces and wet them to make the joint hold up after it dries. Just sticking them together without doing that will cause them to separate as the clay dries. You also need to dry clay slowly, especially when you have uneven thicknesses (like applied pieces such as noses!). Uneven drying causes cracking because it causes unequal stress within the clay. Loosely wrapping clay pieces in plastic will help the clay dry slowly.
There’s also continually moving the clay when rolling it so it doesn’t stick to much and rolling it on fabric will make it easier to move Clay has a memory so if you move it to much it can go along with that when it dries Also if you use to much water it can ruin the integrity of the clay
I love this segment so much & not only for the various cool ideas you awesome ladies try but for the banter between you both. I laughed so hard when Monica said Kim was the DI Diva & Kim's face when Monica licked her finger was priceless!! Keep up the awesome job ladies & fyi those planters were pretty neat even if they did fall apart later.
I so love how they have to keep adding materials to the list. I so never have it together, and it's refreshing to see ppl who don't pretend they do either! (Side note: I hope D.I.Wives becomes a thing!!!!)
That totally stinks that this fell apart. You two did a great job! If you try it again, even with air dry clay, I recommend lightly sanding the container wherever the clay is going to touch, so it adheres to it better. Also, either punch drain holes in the bottom or put rocks and sand in before you put your soil and plant so you don't end up with root rot.
Those Face Planters were amazing....until they dried. I really hope you read all the good tips in the comments and do this again. I bet Lola and Penn Charles would be good at it too. Keep up these videos, please. I love them!!! You two are so much fun!
You should see if you have a local pottery studio that would be willing to fire what's left of Penn's face. Then you can use that as a decoration somewhere.
Who would have thought that just two weeks after this went up, we’d all be incredibly judgmental of anyone who even considered touching their face, let alone licking their fingers 😳 so surreal 😆
I recommend an air-dry polymer clay, even Sculpey, which can be dried and hardened in an oven, doesn't have to and will hold up better than a clay graded for a kiln. Or an oil-based clay, I used one for sculpts for prosthetics for a makeup class and it never fully dries but it doesn't crack and break like that.
Wow, this video makes me realize how much I miss going to the local clay studio, and working on clay pieces!!! I can't wait for COVID-19 to be over, so I can get my hands into some clay!! Unfortunately, I didn't bring any clay home to use during the New York Pause.
I was so shocked when Penn brought out your broken projects! So sad. Kim, you're good at so many things! Stop saying otherwise. I'd love to see y'all try again with a good air dry clay. Congratulations on your try!
I use to help in my moms kindergarden class over 25 years of making handprints for the holidays im sure as parents youve all got a childs handprint. The school had three kindergarden classes of 20-25 students per class. I would use the block of clay tjey used but I used a wire with two wooden handles for better control. We would thencut the clay with a large circle cookie clay cutter. Then wed have each child come up and press their hand in it and then use a toothpick to write their names. Final step the kiln however they have to air dry a few hours first. i Believe the instructions state exactly how long . theres even a special glaze paint for after the kiln ti give the prints a nicer finish. But I saw this clay in the beginning and I thought wellthis project is good if you have the kiln at home like Kim mentions at the end. In the end you guys are fun to watch regardless mishaps and all :-).
My tips... Use a thicker slab of clay Put clay around the outside and bottom only work joins well Make hole in bottom of clay pot Remove tub Let it dry s l o w l y Plant later. And other good tips in comments. Shame about ur lovely art, thx for making mistakes for us so we can all learn. 💛 Remove
Oh I thought I was commenting at the end of the video then I watched the rest and saw my prediction come true. Sorry, they were really cute. I think keeping the yogurt container in the clay cause them to dry unevenly. Air dry clay? If it is real clay it will and must air dry but it must be fired to be strong enough to hold it's shape. Firing isn't even a guarantee that they won't crumble. I've had prices fall apart in the kiln because they didn't dry properly.
The face fell off because you didn't score and slip the clay. If you try again, make a bunch of lines on the pot and the thing you are going to put on the plot, then make the lines very wet, THEN smush the clay together.
Note: I can’t believe Monica didn’t IMMEDIATELY clean the table off when Kim went high- maintenance about using parchment paper as a liner. Rookie clay worker mistake - that shit gets into every crack on a surface…then dries HARD. it’s CLAY, for God’s sake!!
Cute, but ladies if you didn't plan to fire these pots in a kiln you shouldn't use real clay because as they dry they will crumble. You probably know this by now. There are other types of clay that don't require firing and one, that I know of, can be fired in your oven.
Agghhhh! This was literally one week before Covid shut down the world- how ironic that Kim refused to lick her fingers and smooth out the clay. Now? We know to NEVER lick our fingers for any reason. NOT so Diva!!

Great comment! I hope they see it!
That was a lot of great info they should have had before they started.
Thank you! My high school art class skills applaud you!

Clay has a memory so if you move it to much it can go along with that when it dries

Ok, bring back DI wives!!!! I totally love this series I would happily watch and share like 200 more of these 😂 love everything you all do 😊
You are making a "Penn Plant Holder-ness"

Given how tall Penn is & how short Kim is, of course she would make an exact likeness of his nostrils :-P
Phoenix Knight lol
Heh true
When I saw the clay block I was like yep that's gonna break. I've had issues with this clay, creating projects with my kid.
Awww...they were so cute!!! 😭 I'll try it for y'all with an air dry clay! I really liked them:) Great job!!
Was that Penn talking in the Mr. Cool AC advertisement before I watched your video?...Meta! Awesome! You did a great job!
You should see if you have a local pottery studio that would be willing to fire what's left of Penn's face. Then you can use that as a decoration somewhere.
I don't think you can stick a plastic yogurt container in a kiln.
Who would have thought that just two weeks after this went up, we’d all be incredibly judgmental of anyone who even considered touching their face, let alone licking their fingers 😳 so surreal 😆
I love these kinds of videos!! I love DIY stuff ❤️❤️ you guys are amazing

This is SUPER FUN. I can't wait until it gets warmer here to do almost ALL the crafts y'all do with my kiddos ❤😊
...maybe shouldve waited until the end

I am thinking I might do this with my class for Mother’s Day!
Nice one ladies. Can you try it again with the right clay? I'd love to see it.👍🏻
Absolutely adorable!
Lol the thumbnail was so funny
I was so shocked when Penn brought out your broken projects!
So sad.
Kim, you're good at so many things!
Stop saying otherwise.
I'd love to see y'all try again with a good air dry clay.
Congratulations on your try!
I'm trying this! But with air dry clay of course!
Penn is now my roll model. "so where is your expectation level today friend?" Penn : LOW
that is so cool!
I just got one of those from the store and it’s soposed to hold your glasses
Crafting should not be perfect. It should be relaxing and fun. 🤗

I want a re-do...a part 2!!!
Fun!
That face needs to be preserved and make a cameo in a future music video!!
There's my mother. "Do you know how many germs are in that clay?"
This was soo good...I love these episodes! I was all happy for Kim until the end when Penn came in😔... great effort ladies! 👏
Btw, the scratch marks to hold the clay together is called scoring. But great video! Love this channel!
Loved this episode! Kim did SO good. Hated the ending. LOL Also, not sure about the grammar: "Guys, this was project I was so good at!"
I like them!
So funny. love it
Watched this in September 2020 - post COVID-19 - the finger licking and germ-a-fobe are so ON POINT!!!!! Lol
I love DIY!
And I love DIWives.
LOL
Lol on the "air dry" clay.
I love the thumbnail
No ones gonna talk about how Kim just randomly has dental floss in her pocket?
Not surprised at all.
Are you guys are so funny!! I was so sad for you when they broke.
I did a school project exactly like this
One other thing. I would go all out and make a really big planter. That would really give it an Easter Island look.
Definitely thumbs up. Wd girls
So don't the containers need to have holes in the bottom?
My tips...
Use a thicker slab of clay
Put clay around the outside and bottom only
work joins well
Make hole in bottom of clay pot
Remove tub
Let it dry s l o w l y
Plant later.
And other good tips in comments.

I hope Kim's piece of the face stays intact. It would make a neat mask to hang somewhere.
Lol, such a sad ending!
Return the pieces and get your money back 😑 Kim really did a great job sculpting that face. Very artistic.
You have to add lines and water on the back of pieces you put on the clay pot
Clay flu...😂😂😂 New vocabulary: "Mathy" 😮
It does look like Easter Island! "Not recommended by any potter in the entire world."
Pro tip... make much thicker!!
The face fell off because you didn't score and slip the clay. If you try again, make a bunch of lines on the pot and the thing you are going to put on the plot, then make the lines very wet, THEN smush the clay together.
Rocks, sand, dirt then plant.👍🏾
De Nisey why rocks and sand? Plants don’t need it.
@@journalistjane For drainage since they didn't put holes in the bottom of the planter. Otherwise, eventually the roots will rot.
My heart broke for you guys. Dislike when people aren’t truthful about their products
Tf do you mean?-
Pink on earth the clay was labeled air dry when in fact it wasn’t an air dry clay
@@tcan4959 oh
Penn do you remember the video for 'Hello' by Lionel Richie, well this is nothing like it
3 weeks ago you were laughing about licking your fingers and getting the flu 😂
Spooky!
Monica‘s planter looks like squid words house
Note: I can’t believe Monica didn’t IMMEDIATELY clean the table off when Kim went high- maintenance about using parchment paper as a liner. Rookie clay worker mistake - that shit gets into every crack on a surface…then dries HARD. it’s CLAY, for God’s sake!!
@5:05 what? the CLAY FLU 😱. Just use an extra water cup...
Nice attempt at DIY Easter Island things girls
Ladies, don't use a hair dryer...it will cause it to crack! Lol! Great try!!🤣😂❤
I feel for you guys. That royally sucks
make sure you poke holes in the bottom if you do this!!!
Tip sand any material before painting or putting clay on it or it won’t stick and u know ....
This is the first time the pot dies before the plant
Clay flu. Epic.
Ugh man that really blows. Still you guys did an awesome job. I'm sad for you both
I had a feeling that the faces looked like Moai's..
"YOuR GonNa USe PlAstIC ExPloSIVes tO BlOW uP THe PlaNTs."

The clay needs to be fired or it does nothing! I’m so sad that Penn took the blame and it is no one’s fault
Face planters? Wait, are you going to plant your face in them?
First who liked
, don't kiln dry with plastic inside!
#SocialDistancing
And…drainage holes. Plants need drainage.
These videos are just silly
You spent $19 on this
Rubbish
Lol, such a sad ending!
