- Quadrilaterals, Shakespeare, and MATH...oh the horrors of 5th and 8th grade! It doesn't take a scientist to figure out how bad we did on these test questions. How many could you get right? #backtoschool #areyousmarterthana5thgrader #mathishard

Nope! The math equations just spiked my anxiety! 🤣🤣🤣
I'm so Kim lol math is not my strong suit! This was a great video! 💙 Laughed the entire time!
I'll take my shot at explaining the pump problem:
For every "X" amount of hours that goes by, pump A will fill the tank at a rate of 1/5 tank-per-hour, so X*(1/5). Pump B will fill the tank at a rate of 1/8 tank-per-hour, so X* (1/8). You use X for both the 1/5 tank-per-hour and 1/8 tank-per-hour because the same amount of time has to go by for both of them since they're both filling until you get 1 full tank.
So the equation is (Xhours * (1/5 tank/hr) + Xhours * (1/8 tank/hr) = 1 Tank) Or just X*1/5 + X*1/8 = 1 or 13X/40 = 1 or X= 40/13 hours Or 3 hrs, 4 min, and 36 seconds. :-)
Yes. That's it. Well explained. I don't like using variables. Sometimes people need a pen and paper to do it without variables. I do it without the X and explain it that way. I find it helps people understand it easier. I explain it this way.
The trick is to find out the RATE of each pump and then add them together. For example, if pump C fills at a rate of 0.5 gallons-per-hours. Pump D fills at a rate of 0.25 gallons/hour. Then together both pump C and D will pump at a rate of 0.75 gallons/hour (0.5+0.25).
Note: Using division sign (/) is the same as per. So gallons-per-hour is gallons/hour. The per means one or 1. So 0.75 gallons/hour is 0.75 gallons in 1 hour.
But if we want how many hours it takes to fill up one gallon, then you fill it 1 hour/0.75 gallon = 1/0.75 = 1.33 hours/gallon. So it takes 1.33 hours to fill one gallon.
I used gallon because people generally understand a volume unit like gallon better than tank for rate. However, you could have any other volume unit for rate m3 or the same tank used in the problem to fill. I used decimals to avoid fractions. Using the same principles, you can solve the word problem.
Pump A fills 1 tank/5 hours = 1/5 tank/hour = 0.2 tank/hour. Pump B fills 1 tank/8 hours = 1/8 tank/hour = 0.125 tank/hour. Together their rate is 1/5 (0.2) tank/hour + 1/8 (0.125) tank/hour = 13/40 (0.325) tank/hour. However, we want the hours to fill up ONE tank or the hours-per-tank. So flip 13/40 tank/hour. 40/13 hour/tank (1/0.325) = 3 hours 1/13 hours per tank = 3 hours 5 minutes per tank. 1/13 hours is close to 5 minutes.
Generally, these types of problems have two simple steps. Step 1) Add 1/time of A + 1/ time of B. Step 2) Take the number from step 1 and flip it. That's the answer.
My head hurts 🙃
Aaaaaahhhhh
Can you do a kids take over the vlog for a day
That would be fun!
Omg you so should
Stfu
You should do a “Don’t Stop Me Now” parody where you sing about all the “fun” stuff you’ve done during quarantine.
That would be a good one!
Don’t Stop Me Now could be Stop This Now
I'm 60 yrs old and when you started the math story problems, my STOMACH STILL WENT IN A KNOT! Thankful for teachers who understand the stuff I have yet to have used in my life, but make me more thankful for anxiety meds! Whew! You nailed it
I can’t imagine you have never used math in your life. You may not have written an equation with x and y, but if you’ve ever doubled or halved a recipe, you’ve used math. If you have ever sewn or built anything from scratch, you’ve used math. If you have solved a problem by reasoning out cause and effect, you have used math. (Sorry, my math teacher persona just had to take over for a minute.) People use math skills all the time and never realize it because it isn’t written out as a problem seen in a book.
@@susanrussell8195 and I struggle with all of those!😉 we moved so much my education was interrupted & I never grasped the concepts 🙄😪
"Which is a TYPE of taco." :D Love you Kim.
I’m you, Kim. I am an English Lit. major and kept waiting for the grammar questions, which I could have nailed. Math is a foreign language to me. Bless you, 8th graders! I wouldn’t go back there for anything.
Also? Marry someone who fills in the blanks you can’t. Kim did, so did I. ♥️💯♥️
to be fair, have the 5th and 8th grader take the same test
Penn, you forgot to crack your knuckles, that was every boy’s annoying distraction when I was in 8th grade. I was so bad at math myself.
I love at the end when Penn raises his glass and says, 'coffee' and Kim whispers 'tequila' lol because yes...
Just to be nerdy, it is actually 40/13 hours or roughly 3 hours and 4.61538 minutes, but I'll allow you to round to 5 minutes.
R u the kind of people that turn on "stats for nerds" ? XD
I like your method better.
I imagined the tank was 400 gallons to calculate the flow rates (80 and 50 gallons per hour). Then you add the flow rates together and divide, 400/130 3.0769, approximately 3 hours 4 min 37 sec.
Thank you! I was SO confused by the 5 mins, but too lazy to actually to the calculations, so I was only 99.99998% sure.
Yes! My equation was correct. I came up with the equation .325X = 1 and solved for X.
7:23
Penn: *Releases bodily noise
Kim: "Did you have a girlfriend in 8th grade?
Penn: "Nope!"
Kim: "Shocking" (as Penn continues to burp)
Katherine Pollock I read this at that part 😂
Yeah, hmmm Penn, Why would you guess that is?? 🤣🤣
Watching Kim try to do math was the highlight of my day lol. I'm a senior in high-school and I literally cannot do 8th grade math. I'm glad someone else thinks math is as dumb as I so. Conspiracy theory: Math word problems were created by the government to confuse us and distract us from real world problems. JK
No these are real problems. The government wants us to solve other people’s issues!!! Jk, Jk
Math is hard to learn I agree, but we use it every day so it’s important to learn as much as you can (admittedly, maybe not so much the word problems)
"It's tequila..." 😂 I don't drink but math makes me want to start every time!😱😏
I'm so mentally exhausted, that I am not even smarter than me, which doesn't make sense and proves my point at the same time. Here's where I come when I need a laugh. I will shut up now and watch the video.
I, too, would rather walk across LEGO covered floors, in pitch black, on my way to the restroom, at midnight, than do long sentence math equations.
It confuses the heck out of me. I have to read that sentence 18 times over to understand, even one half of the equation.
Yeah, you're not alone. I couldn't help my kids with their math work past 4th or 5th grade. But to be fair, I was an exactly average math student, and my kids were all way above their grade levels!
I ended up being a history/English high school teacher.:)
For "work together" problems, easiest method is to add 2 fractions and set equal to 1 full job. In this case, x/8 + x/5 = 1. Then multiply by 40 (to kill the denominators), and get 13x = 40. Divide by 13 to get 40/13, or 3 1/13, or 3hr + 1/13hr (about 5 mins)
😳😳😳😳😳😳🦗🦗🦗🦗🦗
5:09 LOL they looked at each other like " WHAT?!?!?!"
Love Kim's honest reaction when Penn belches at the end. You can almost hear her thinking: "he's the father of my children. He's the father of my children. He's the father of my children..."
😂😂
Don't feel too bad. I used to be the Human Resources professional for several manufacturing plants. We had all of our applicants complete a multiple-choice 8th Grade Arithmetic test. The test included problems requiring the addition, subtraction, multiplictaion, and division of whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages. Only 25% of the applicants (mostly high school graduates) could pass the test (and subsequently be eligible for hiring).
Oh oh do a video where Rona visits in a restaurant
I am going in to 8th grade. I have been watching since forever and love all of your videos. They are so funny. I love you guys.
Good luck with school!
Good luck! 😷
Good luck!!
Can you do a skit when Rona mentions large parties in colleges and universities
You shoud do a parody of "I'm still standing". It could be "I'm still sitting".
Like if you agree.
"I'm still sittting on the couch..."
That's a good idea! 😂
They should totally do that!
Yea!
Yassssssssssssss!
They did make an Elton John video!!!!!!😀
I love this video. I did calculus in high school, but helping my kids with math went out the window when they got to high school. I know you can't control this, but I wish Mitch McConnell ads weren't the ones playing when I try to watch your videos.
Questions about general principles are ok, but 5th grade trivia questions e.g. Baptista Minola's dougheter's names, are just there for people that weren't in that particular class to get wrong. Not everyone is assigned the same books regardless of grade level.
Whatever happened to General Knowledge questions covering all topics to give everyone a fair go and not just the math whizz?
I'm in 8th grade right now, thank GOD the kids in my class stay muted when emitting bodily noises.
Thank you Holderness Family!
1 + 1=2! I am 57 and I am pretty sure that's right! Math? THAT is another planet for me!
No sorry it's 11 your wrong. 🤣 Jk jk your right.
Well that depends since 1 could stand for any amount as it just represent a fixed determined amount. A+A=B. We can get to find out how to prove 1=1🤣
Math neard here. Did you know that there is a different meaning between "2" and "2!"?
In this case "2" and "2!" have the same value. But "3" and "3!" do not have the same value.
2!=2x1=2
3!=3x2x1=6
Magdalena Ouch, you’re hurting my brain. Quite literally I have a brain that experiences a jagged, electrical miniature migraine with math. It’s possibly connected with my seizure disorder.
How many neutrons in an atom of chlorine, and they didn’t provide atomic weight and number? 😂 That’s not a fair question in 8th grade! 😂
I homeschool my kids as a matter of course, and I need that basic info to answer that. 😜
“It’s like a wet pancake on your seat”🤣🤣🤣
Penn: So we graduate 8th grade with a “C”
Me: 🤦🏻♀️ (you mean a B?)
Lol, I love they’re videos! 💕😂🐾
I grew up military brat, so I attended a LOT of school districts. Sometimes 80 was a B, others it was a C. Not every school goes down to a 90 for an A.
Yup! 😄
‘It might be a dinoflagellate’ 😂.
6:06 - "Do you know what I'd rather do than do this? Like walk across a room of Lego's." 😂😂😂
Just love you guys. Thanks for making this 'unprecedented time' a little less painful.
Kim: did you just fart 😂
Word problems still make me sick to my stomach!
The 3 hours 5 minutes thing may have been addressed earlier in the comments from the pump problem, but it is solved in the following way: 1/5+1/8 = 1/x getting a common denominator of 40x, we get 8x + 5x = 40 giving x = 40/13
I was totally lost 🤣
4:15- 4:30 "or else it's like a wet pancake at the bottom of ur chair"😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Literally *giggle giggle giggle* heeeheeeheeeheeeheeee 😁😁
My daughter is a fifth grade teacher. She is also on the math and science committees which teach the teachers on their professional development days. I don’t know where she gets it from. Certainly not me. I was an elementary principal secretary/business manager for 27 years. Bless all the teachers!
X/5 ( number of hours for A - X is the amount of time this pump takes to fill the tank and 5 hours is how long it takes to fill one tank)
X/8 (number of hours for B - X is the amount of time this pump takes to fill the tank and 8 hours is how long it takes to fill one tank)
We are using X for each pump because we want to use both of the pumps together and shut them off at the same time - when the one tank is full.
X/5 + X/8 = 1 (because you are filling one tank)
The common denominator is 40, so you multiply 8/8 * X/5 and 5/5 * X/8.
8X/40 + 5X/40 = 1
Multiply both sides by 40
8X + 5X = 40
Combine X
13X = 40
Divide both sides by 13
X = 3.077 hours (rounded to the thousandth place)
3 hours 5 minutes - rounded to the nearest minute
or for he nonmathlete definition the formula is simply A multiplied by B divided by (A+B)
Taking a break from watching the hurricane madness coming my way to watch this. Loving it 🤣🤣 Math makes you think.
hahaha the crickets were in my head for all of those gr 8 questions! I was never good in Math, I really don't like it and would rather scrub toilets than do math lol
Can u make more Rona videos. Also I was laughing so much I didn’t realize I was in the ground
4th grade was were I tapped out on math. So my husband took over for helping our son with math at that point. Lol Great video
My husband, the engineer, did also. But he cant spell worth a dog, my strong suit!!
This video was screaming at me to retrieve my brain cells 😂
This whole video had me LMAO!
I actually love math so this is so funny to me 😂
Lol!!! OMG I think I failed almost all of them! Loved it!
Love your videos! You all are amazing and smart!! 😘
Kim. Can you do another Rona vid? I love her!
Rona on college campus!!
Ha ha, mad about the math question about the tank too. Going to think about it once I’m off the elliptical 😆
Which is a type of taco!
When I was in 5th and 8th grade, I think gas prices were cents not dollars. Naturally, I couldn't answer any of the questions but I can remember who wrote "The Loco-Motion" (Gerry Goffin and Carole King, written before I was born). Penn and Kim are a scream but do the kids think you're as cool as your viewers do? I don't find much funny, but the Holderness Family is an exception. I applaud your excellence. (Required for all who attend live theater or will attend in the future.)
Lol Penn my husband would so be laughing at you because he does the same exact thing!!! Love the video!!!
Thank you for keeping me sane! Today was my first day back at school, as a school social worker. My school is one of the few going back live. Keep us in your prayers.
the tank is filled in 3 hours, 4 minutes and almost 37 seconds. Pump A fills the tank at a rate of 1/5 of the tank per hour. Pump B fills the tank at a rate of 1/8 per hour. working together, they fill the tank at 13/40 per hour. 13 goes into 40 3.07 times. .07 of an hour is 4 minutes and 36.92 seconds.
Thank you. I somehow calculated it to be 3 hours and 1,5 minutes when was trying to figure out how mutch 1/40 of an hour is. Now I can sleep well knowing how to get to the right answer.
I'm just a mom (grandmom & great grandmom) who graduated high school in 1971. I got 3 hours and 4.6 minutes. Added the speed of one pump, .2 tank per hour to the speed of the other, .125 tank per hour. So at .325 tank per hour .325x=1 x=3.076923 hours. Don't know what I did wrong, or are you just supposed to round to the nearest whole minute?
Fun video. Thanks guys!
Guys!!! Awesome video!!!! “Coffee.. it’s tequilas!” Hahahahahaha!!!
First, I want to thank you guys for keeping us sane through all that was 2020. I've spent hours happily laughing with you and sharing your brilliance. I do want to make a comment about the way math was addressed here, though. You guys seem pretty informed, so you probably know that girls perform at the same level as boys in math until puberty. Societal expectations still point young women away from math, making it harder for them to get into STEM even if they have natural aptitude. I'm afraid that when we normalize math avoidance, even in jest, we're accidentally promoting another generation of it. Thanks for your time. Stay safe and sane!
" I dont know how you can do this without this " 😂 " Its tequila " 🤣🤣🤣😋
My kids literally go back to school this week. In the buildings with strange rules.
5:07 do 8th graders have to memorize the periodic table?? 🤔 because i wouldn't know theat without it. but with it it's easy. we are allowed to use it.
I love y’all family. You are so real.
Awe.
Love this.
Reminds me of my older brother and his wifey, back in the day......80s were a fun time to be a kid sister.
I'm in 8th grade and I can feel the pain of having to school from home, in a teenager's point of view. It pretty much sucks. It's nice in some ways but will always suck in others. I'm excited to go back to in person school, though in my state it's been delayed till January, though I'm not sure about other states and countrys.
The sad reality of 2020. Thanks for giving me reasons to laugh and cry with my 11th & 8th graders. :-)
im related to someone who is in 7th and they literally just learned about the food chain stuff instead of 5th :D
Decomposers in the food chain is in the 5th grade Common Core standards. CCS is probably what the questions were based on.
@@marlenedunn7329 mmm fun
Well that’s a new favorite code from the holder was family. Everyday it’s like yes! The posted another video! I wake up early just to see it because I’m so excited
Do you know what is funny they would have got all of these wrong because they were not complete full sentences.
Ikr
Lol. I'm starting school in a few weeks and i actually tried these questions along with them to make sure my brain hasn't died over the summer.
I love you guys ! This is hilarious 😂thank you for this video . You guys are awesome ! Like if u agree 💖 Stay safe everyone.
Penn: I was a teachers pet
ME:Me too I love math, history, writing, literature, social studies and Science is ok.
And I love extra credit.
Kim, try to take deep breaths when the kid need help it will help you concentrate on helping them and calm you down. Works for me, at least.
I want to go to an Ivy League college.
I shouted out the answers before they revealed.
Great video!
And I LOOOVVVE SCHOOL
48 times 7= 336 because I learned to partition it into smaller parts in 4th grade and lengthen it but I also know another way to solve long multiplication-3 ways I know how to solve it, and it is FUN!
It's been so long since I had to figure out a probability! Haha. I did get tripling the amount of flour, though.
1/(1/5+1/8) = 3h:04m:36.923s. (Think of combining rates...1 tank/5 hours PLUS 1 tank/8 hours = 8 tanks/40 hours PLUS 5 tanks/40 hours = 13 tanks/40 hours.)
That was great!!
When i went to school, 80 was a B not a C. I used to like math, but those word problems makes my brain hurt!
I would learn math sooo much quicker if Penn was my teacher! It would be pretty darn fun too.
I'd probably get distracted halfway through though...
Penn: "What's the square root of 3 x 97 + 45?"
Me: "Is the answer uhh.. uhm... CAN'T WE ALL AGREE TO WEAR A TINY FLIPPING MASK?"
Kim at math is me 😂
I am so with Kim!!! Math is not my thing either!! Thank god for conversation apps! I’m a pastry chef and if I have to do anything more than double if a batch I have to get out my phone! lol Great video guys!!!
Good morning from Massachusetts always had trouble with math .
I’m a third grader and I totally love watching your videos!
Love love love your videos
We did the simplifying in 6th grade- not 8th lol. Great video!
Can you do a random video about a cardboard box?
Am I the only one focused on Penn's arm vein??💪
i love you guys so much!!!
"synthesizers" is an interesting name for what most 8th grade boys are busy with... 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
What a great view of 'hell'='math word problems'. Theologically questionable but still very scary....... Thanks for the humor your family brings to me... Alan
Haha. Yes. Discomfort ... Hell ... Pain. I was a CPA and the thought of anything Math/Accounting/tax -related now makes me feel physically ill. Must be Post-Trauma. 😁
You guys should check out the test manual for HAM radio. Here in Germany, I spent 1.5 years studying for this exam, which I passed using short cuts and memorizing the answers from the test manual. It's very math intensive. I'm sure you'd have a great time learning it. Meanwhile, I will show my teacher husband this video when he gets home. He'll probably be able to solve everything.
That is the same grades my boys are this year! Have fun regardless of the school decisions you have to make.
Omg I laughed so hard!
Nice video! Keep it up! I’m going to 11th grade this year, I’ve passed fifth and eighth grade long ago! I m doing online in junior year.
Hi! I love math! Lol 😂 the last problem is: pump A fills a tank in 5 hours and pump B takes 8 hours. How long does it take to fill if you use both pumps?
Let's use X for for the volume of the tank. Then pump A fills at a rate of X/5...
A = X/5
B = X/8
If you use both pumps you add the rates together and get:
New Rate = X/5 + X/8 = 13X/40
Then your answer is it takes 40/13 of an hour to fill..
This is 3 hours and 1/13 hour or 3 hours and 60/13 minutes...
Call out the isotope @5:04..... :p
90-100%=A 80-89%=B 70-79%=C 60-69%=D and anything lower is an F to be ocd also this might make you feel a bit better for the 5th grade section of the test
😂😂 love the fart and Kim I’m with you on the math!! 🤷🏻♀️
When you got into the 8th grade thing I had NO IDEA what you were talking about.
No idea whatsoever!!!
Comment coming from someone who used to be that A student: When you actually think about the real utility of all these questions, short of being in STEM, knowing how to do these is practically useless in real life! The only equation useful is the cross-equation and multiplying baking ingredients but that's it. Even professionals use calculators and computers for everything these days. Historical facts are also irrelevant if not understood within a context and how it influenced the world. We need to move away from Trivia Pursuit knowledge to applied reality-based education. Do you know how to fix a clogged drain with a snake? Do you know how to properly fix a hole in a drywall? Do you know how to use applied physics to lift something heavy so you won't hurt your back? No for most because school spent years teaching us useless math or making us remember the name of fictional characters that don't matter.
Why aren't you guys on broadcast tv? I watch you every day. Going back through all the years I missed before finding you. Holder(mess) all the time! Woo hoo!
