  • **** WATCH ENTIRE VIDEO BEFORE YOU DISASSEMBLE YOUR BIKE.
    This video takes you through the steps to add an alternator to your Gl1200a. There are 2 kits to buy; basic & full. There is a cost savings to buying the basic kit, but you have to wait awhile to get the missing parts that come with the full kit.
    Total Cost for me on this job was right around $500. If you subtract the grinder (I purchased) and the timing belts that I did not need, then the cost is around $455. The project took me between 9 and 9.5 hours. Mostly because of messing around with the radiator and filming the video.
    Here are the exact prices. Remember to add $320 if you buy the full kit. Alt belt came from Napa, grinder from Walmart, screws from local hardware store and the rest came from O'reilly Auto Parts
    Everything Parts - Grinder and Timing Belts
    $230.00 Alt Kit $230.00
    $15.93 50 Amp Breaker $15.93
    $30.75 Timing Belts
    $133.49 Alt + Wires $133.49
    $13.11 Alt Belt $13.11
    $35.45 Grinder
    $8.37 Box of Couplers $8.37
    $4.19 Paint Pen $4.19
    $0.84 Screws $0.84
    $8.78 Spark Plugs $8.78
    $3.14 Slide Connectors $3.14
    $8.06 14 Amp Inline Fuse holder and fuse $8.06
    $29.37 Radiator hose + Sealant + Lock Tite $29.37
    $521.48 TOTAL $455.28
    Hope you enjoyed the video and have a great time riding. Don't forget to like this video.

    "I am not that guy" I loved that quote. I am also "Not that guy" you are not alone. Great video
    Side note: you might want to look into LEDs bulbs. I changed out almost all my bulbs to LEDs, they use a lot less amps, less load on the system, which will save your stator, or Alt. and the R/R. l also upgraded to a MOSFET R/R

      Thank you. I did eventually change out the stereo and halfway through the video you can find where I added some LED fog lights and strips.

      Yeah the problem with the 94 aspencade is it came with a 30 amp alternator which isn't enough to keep it charged on short trips and if you use your reverse you just killed your battery and it's not going to start so by putting the larger 90 AMP in you've got that power you also have to upgrade your fuses

    If in doubt always change the belts. Easiest way to destroy a goldwing motor. Better safe than sorry. That said thanks. This video is fantastic.

    I SALUTE YOU SIR...Great "REAL" Video.
    Before you do any work, REMOVE the FRONT TIRE & FENDER OFF before starting this Alternator Conversion. With them out of your way it makes it so much easier and less frustrating about worrying about scratching your paint. They take up so much room and with them out of your way you can get tools in there better and that RADIATOR is so much easier to handle....room for extra hands like in a HELPER...JUST SAYIN'
    Nice description of what to do and what not to do. A REAL example and not some edited version with all the fumble and hard things to be done left on the editing floor.
    EVEN with the entire KIT it goes just about like this...EXPECT to have to make a few modifications to get things to line up and FIT...just like here it is a ROYAL PAIN in the TUUSH...lol
    I SALUTE YOU SIR...Great "REAL" Video and nice JOB.

    A swap to a slimline/low-profile fan would be a better idea, since you have the radiator out. And maybe look into an oil cooler installation.

    Hello, dear friend! My name is John and I am from Russia. I am also the owner of the motorcycle and your video where you show how to repair the bike helps me a lot. I also want the same generator, but to buy it through Ebay is very expensive because of the exchange rate, so I want to use a generator of some cars. I will appreciate it very much if you write the size of the generator that you put in the bike. Thank you. John.

  • @GaRbAllZ

    I am a bit concerned about the hole in the cover plate fitting tight enough to keep the water and dirt away from the timing belts and pulleys. The dirt and highway grit would eat the belts.
    How well did the hole you cut fit around the shaft of the pulley. It looked pretty bad in the video.

    • @Quarteg
      @Quarteg  9 лет назад +1

      Dennis Hill Sorry for the delay in response. I too had the same question. I was assured by the creator of the conversion kit that you just need to make the hole big enough for the pulley. That little bit of a gap between the cover and the pulley won't be hit by weather.
      It makes sense after seeing it all together, that the hole is blocked by the radiator (which will deflect water away) and the pulley itself. It moves so fast that water and debris won't come close to that hole.
      Hope that helps.

      i rode a gl1000 10,000+ miles with no timing cover at all on. No worries as long as you replace the belts regularly.

    • @Quarteg
      @Quarteg  8 лет назад

      How often is regularly. Everyone tells me I should have changed it when I did the conversion, but the belt looked brand new and exactly like the brand new one in my hand so I didn't change it. I'm the third owner of the bike and don't know what was, and was not done, or even when stuff was done.
      Thoughts?

    great video! thanks for uploading. just one question, one part wasn't real clear. you ran into the issue with the spacer position at the bottom of the radiator, when you thought you burnt up your fan motor. did those spacers need adjusted out or do they get bottomed out like you showed? you skipped that part and went right to the voltage testing. ive got the complete kit coming from don, and just want to be prepared. thanks again, happy riding.

    • @Quarteg
      @Quarteg  8 лет назад +1

      Boy... I have to think about that. It's been so long ago.
      I think what I did is brought the spacers out a little further so as not to hit the belt with the fan. Don however swears that everything fits perfectly. This was not the case for me, and in fact I still have not been able to mount that decorative brace in front of the radiator because the gap is too wide.
      I believe this happened because I brought the spacers out a little bit but I'm not 100% certain.
      PS. The fan ended up being ok, I just didn't get the bike hot enough for it to kick in.
      Is that what you were looking for?

      You cannot use a pulley from a car (too my knowledge). I also have no idea what size screws and bolts are needed. That did not come with the kit information.
      Your best bet is to purchase the kit to ensure you get the right products.

    • @Quarteg
      @Quarteg  2 года назад +1

      In theory.
      Part of the reason it took me so long was due to: poor directions to go off of. Also I had never dismantled that part of the bike before, and setting up the camera for instructions to help others understand how to do it and do it faster.

      Some bikes have the stator fail three or four times. This way that is no longer an option and so you won't have to worry about it all the time. Naturally it will happen when you're on top of a mountain 1000 miles from home.. Great video!
