Why does Sephiroth pretend Cloud isn't a real person?

  • Final Fantasy VII is about two men who discover they aren't the heroes the wanted to be. Sit with me as I talk about shame, hollowness, and illusion in this 1997 classic.

I actually liked the commentary on Sephiroth but as for Cloud, one major thing I think you missed is that Jenova is mostly if not fully to blame for any delusions Cloud has about his past and the identity he creates after Zack's death. I believe in the ultimania for the game, it explains that Jenova has the ability to alter the memories of people along with becoming someone/something that person knows, so when Cloud is hyper exposed to Mako and given Jenova cells, it's too much for his brain to handle, so when he sees Zack die he's slowly coming to, then he takes what he knows about Zack along with his now super soldier abilities and cobbles it all together into his new identity (Along with Jenova's influence) when he sees Tifa in Midgar.

Awesome video! I've always been confused with sephiroth's identity in the game. I've heard people say that sephiroth is basically totally dead and all interactions with him are actually jenova, and so jenova is the one that you are always talking to. But I'm not sure about that, maybe its the complete opposite? Or it could be a symbiotic relationship? I wish the game was more clear. I could also just be retarded lol

Honestly. With the original and the remake trilogy.
I'd say it's a bit of both. Jenova and Sephiroth became one being.
Though, I feel like Jenova is sorta the more dominant personality. However, Sephiroth is still in there, too. With anger and hatred burning from within.
Heck, I think the reason he's "alive" is because he literally discarded all the human traits. Living on as... basically? You know the movie "The Grudge"? He's an "onryo", a spirit that's made from his deepseated anger and hatred. But, also mixed with Jenova's ambitions and goals. Making him FAR more dangerous than a normal onryo.

Sephiroth did die, but he basically rebuilt his body in a cocoon in the northern cave when he fell into the lifestream. From there he became linked to Jenova and all beings that had a piece of Jenova within them. Basically he used Jenova's dead body as a puppet to fuck with Cloud
