I've been playing Team Fortress 2 since 2007, and I've always been under the impression that heavy is just really really boring. Tf2 is a movement game. There's so many ways, like rocket jumping, to go so high and so fast, even as classes that you wouldn't necessarily expect
So I decided to challenge myself to only play heavy for 1 week...
The trick was to just play flank heavy.

I think the most annoying part about playing as Heavy (for me at least) is that you can't do shit to counter Snipers. The biggest problem I have with fighting them as Heavy is trying to actually kill them. Because of how tf2 works, both range and damage fall off are working against you. With any hitscan weapon, you do less damage at further ranges, and random bullet spread can REALLY mess you up with aim. And when you mix both of those things into a class that has next to no movement options, you're basically fucked when dealing with Snipers, because unlike every other hitscan based class, Sniper is neither affected by range or random bullet spread, and pretty much only takes chip damage from Heavy

As a long time ago heavy main, you can crouch spam to counter snipers just for a bit, take into account you cant crouch spam indefinitely as they can wait for you to stand up and take an easy shot, i suggest you do it at random intervals to throw off their timing, along with using your strafe keys to make it even harder for them to kill you, just know that getting out of the sightline is obviously the best choice on this, but you can tapfire the sniper with tomi from afar to damage him in hopes of throwing him off, sometimes works, sometimes doesnt, let me tell you that. Also, you can use fists of steel to run away, combine jump and crouch with strafing, eved some experienced snipers had some trouble hitting me, atleast in my case.

    • @SodiumTF
      @SodiumTF Год назад +16

To be fair, sniper counters literally everything.
As a heavy main myself, snipers are extremely annoying especially when they just don't let you play the video game, but this problem isn't just for heavy, any class at all can get destroyed by a sniper even at close ranges.

But in my 4k hrs, it rarely happen and numbers don’t lie either. There are so many things that’s a threat to heavy that nullify his massive health pool.

@@giahuynguyenkim6389Medic was designed to be the most important class in the game by far. If even one person plays medic while the other team doesn't have one, the team with the medic will win most of the time. Heavy is optimal when surrounded by his team, but it never really happens in casual except in King of the Hill and Payload from my experience.

  • @FNicky91

Heavy is not about "flashiness" - he is about holding together the team he is with, and utterly destroying anything in their way as they push out - slowly, but steadily
And while he can definetly "work" (and often die) solo like a demoman or a soldier, he will do way better with his team supporting him, and him supporting them
It's about winning, not being cool for the sake of being cool - if you're good at heavy, you can carry your team and barely even notice, because you're too busy being an unstoppable powerhouse

It seems the popular opinion is that sandvich is mvp secondary, but if you can manage a kgb kill you get about two to three full crit shotgun blasts which is enough to ruin literally anybody's day if you whiff half the pellets. Incredibly devious, and since random crits are usually off most people forget full crits exist.

This was me 4-8 hours every day a week for a total of at least 1,00 hours.
Most of the tricks people do with heavy, do virtually nothing and you start to realize they may not actually play heavy all that much.
Biggest tip I could give people is learn to play very twitchy. If you don't have someone accusing you of aimbotting because of how often and sharply you snap your aim, you aint playing heavy right.
At higher skills levels the only class you should really be scared of is Scout. A Scout who knows what he's doing will destroy you in most situations. Be mindful of corners, an Engineer with a shotgun can destroy you with it. Watch your health, a Heavy at 100 health is basically useless. Remember you fire your minigun from your head, in other words try to keep as little of your body exposed as possible. Heavy also requires patience sometimes. You're very slow at everything and just about any class can kill you if they catch you out in the open. The GRU gives you an option to play a bit more aggressively though. A lot of Heavy gameplay is kind of territorial control. You post up your big white ass in a contested area and try to keep it locked down. A medic may uber you, in fact they probably will. But, keep in mind you're probably the last class they should in most situations. A demo or a Soldier or hell even a pyro depending on the context is better.
Tomislav is not the objective superior Minigun, In fact the more time I played heavy the more often I found myself not using it. Tomislav is good for things at far to mid-range, but at closer ranges it's accuracy becomes a downside. It doesn't fire fast enough nor it is accurate enough to be useful. When a scout is jumping all over your head or medics and spies are bumrushing you with melee at close range, you're going to wish you had the faster fire rate and looser spread of the minigun.
When you're firing at someone always snap behind you every second or so. If you have the health and ammo, don't even stop firing when you do snap behind. Most of the time when a spy goes in for the backstab, it's when you're distracted fighting someone, not when you're moving.
When you move, you'll probably learn how to bunny hop quickly. What I do is a sort of 180 hop forward. I jump looking forward, then the next jump I jump forward looking backwards. You get a little bit of a speed boost, but honestly it's mostly just for pyro and explosive classes or sentries. When you jump into them and they fire, you can usually just surf off it and instinctively when a soldier or demo sees a heavy at Point blank they fire, pyros are a toss up. Newer pyros will just M1, better pyros will airblast and try to run around a corner.
Spies and Medics are really only a problem if they get in close. If a Medic is pushing in on you, chances you aren't at at full health. If they have their melee out that's when you need to panic two things are probably going to happen: 1.) Due to your size and slow speed, they'll probably hit you. 2.) if they do hit you, it will probably be a crit. IF you aren't at full health that could be game over.
Spies are an issue because of Face-stabs. Most of the time the most dangerous position for spies to be is not behind you, but directly in front of you. All the times I've been backstabbed as heavy, most of them were some degree of a face stab.
But honestly the main class you're going to want to fear is scout.
Snipers can be, and should be, but they're far more situational then a Scout. Just figure out where the sightlines are and don't contest the area in front of them without an uber. Personally I found myself checking the kill feed often. If I knew for a fact the enemy sniper was dead or moved to a completely different place, I'd push forward into the sight line.
Depending how your aim is with the shotgun and if you have enough time to swap to it, it might actually be better to use it in a heavy on heavy fight just because you have more mobility.
Sandwiches are dependent on playstyle. Stock is perfectly acceptable, but I found myself favoring the Dalokhas. 50 health might not sound like much, but it can be a real game changer in clutch situations. A heavy on heavy fight can often come down to who has the most health and who started firing first. The Dalokhas tips the odds in your favor.
Pay attention to your health. If you get below 100, I'd just run. assuming you can.
Situation awareness is paramount. A lot of times I'd find myself not really paying attention to what I was firing at and more watching what was going on around me. It sounds weird but as a Heavy I don't technically have to be on you like a hawk to kill you. Suppressing fire is one way I'd play.

I've always wondered how to make Heavy more playable and fun class, so the only things that came into my mind was:
    1) Let Heavy use 4-th slot, so his ability to move this slow would be explained, while still providing f2p Heavies to keep up the pressure without a Medic. Basically, he would use Primary, Secondary, Melee and Sandwiches slot at once.
Like, I WANT TO BE BY MYSELF, because of that I'm a Spy-main and hate playing Heavy, cos Heavy requires OR to have a perfect knowledge of all maps you're running into OR a Medic what has enough brains to stay BEHIND me and watch for Spies if I'm busy. Yeah, Spies and Snipers are real threat to me, but I don't want to be this class, that always slowly approaching a medium health kit after fighting one person. Makes me thing of such weapon, that could make Heavy regenerate his health like Medic.
    2) Just give him more Miniguns with new mechanics, while fixing and rebalancing his old non-use guns as well. TF2 Classic made that already a thing.
    3) Balance Heavy out. His guns, sandwiches and melees has unique utilities already, but half of them suck.

Laughter in particular is great since after going through the portal for crits and invincibility, you can blast jump through the hallway to get to the frontlines while both boosts are still active, then hit another bomb to fly over the point with a crit boosted Minigun.

Buffalo Steak Sandvich is actually a really good item, just...
Not for its intended purpose at all lmao.
Don't use it to go punch people, use it for roll outs on gamemodes like 5CP - and then when you reach the point you start treating it like a sandvich that you toss to your allies.

Honestly, the huo long heater is my personal favorite minigun, there's nothing quite like dropping down on someone, having revved up mid air, and then filling them with bullets as they are scorched.
the afterburn alone does 10 damage per second and in tandem with the pulsing rings of fire it honestly melts scouts who just don't care and just charge into you to land meatshots.
Oh also you can use the holiday punch to jump and stun light classes and then rev up to kill them without firing a single bullet, where they have to watch as they are burned to death for an excruciating couple of seconds
Is it better than stock ? Not necessarily, unlike with other options you actually have to pay attention to your ammo counter, but damn it's so much fun when you actually make use of the fire ring.

I once jugged and it was really funny. My team was getting rolled hard so I switched to heavy and flanked the enemy team constantly(whilst also moving 4 metres every kill so the enemy didn’t know where I was). I single handedly won that game for my team. The flanking jug heavy is one of the greatest things you can do

As a rare heavy main for 750 hours by the name of Charlie Crabbo on steam, but just got bored because there is only so much I can do as heavy, I agree with most of your sentiments except for the huo long heater. I plan on going over it as a guide one day but the way I see it is that it's a weapon that is the antithesis of your jug playstyle. Probably why you dislike it but it encourages you to use your positioning as a weapon, if you do those things and pick up ammo from the deceased it works really well as a general area deterrent. Especially because the ring of fire is perceived as a joke, it's initial 12 damage does seem very small and it is but I think that's part of it's false sense of security and then when you hit them with your 10 damage a second afterburn and damage boosted bullets suddenly it's a lot scarier! (The burning bonus also affects afterburn) And the fact it's an area of effect also means it can get more people than may seem, now it is also perceived in the community for it being a failure at trying to be a spychecking weapon but think about it for a second that it would be absurdly op if we gave the highest health highest DPS class guaranteed insurance vs spies without having to think and still having a minigun, however I have found that if you actually look behind you every once in a while like a good heavy should and spycheck as if the ring didn't exist it actually does a solid job of giving you a dead spy on your hands especially since the stigma of heavies using it not knowing how to spycheck encourages spies to want to goofy ah kill pootis but if you know it's unique tricks it's actually a lot of fun and you still do really solid DPS better than the tomislav without burning bonus damage and only 20 DPS less than the brass beast when they're burning and you still have the positioning and rev time of the stock it's just really powerful and unique when you know it's tricks which is why it's my favorite minigun to use and concept wise not to mention the cherry on top if you team up with a friendly pyro, the ring of fire also helps ya play a game of hot potato with scout because they have to keep their distance or risk getting burned alive even harder but that puts them in easier mid range tracking distance and less scary meatshot damage so it's a win-win there too! I could go on but I've said a lot already, I'd love to hear any thoughts if you approach the weapon in a new light although I do understand the value of breaks as I'm on one myself but yeah very cool stuff man and nice to see someone understand that while heavy is not mechanically complex thinking outside the box really is what heavy is truely about and I love him for that.

I will say this. If you do grab Shiela (Heater), be as god damn annoying as possible in the enemy's face. Cause of you can do roughly *650* damage a second at close range on-top of afterburn, let's just say that you become a Crit factory with enough enemies taking damage. Cause when you got the ammo and the health, let's just say an Uber push becomes different even if your team doesn't have a Pyro (cause that nice little stat on Heater? That nice little green stat on her that says 25% increase in damage towards burning players? Yeah. *IT DOES NOT CARE ABOUT RANGE* )

I do play frontline Heavy, but instead of relying on my team, I try to enhance my team instead. So I use gloves of running urgently to get fast to where I need to be (usually the cart), then I use dalokohs bar for extra health because as you said, relying on unknown players is risky, including relying on unknown medics, and then I use natasha. It makes you even more tankier once you lose half your health (which will happen as frontline Heavy) but even though you inflict less damage on enemies, it slows them down. Which is perfect for when your team is around. It makes it much easier for let's say Soldiers to suddenly target Scouts and Pyros from further away. And you yourself won't be without kills since, it's still good enough for finishing off injured players. And the damage penalty isn't as bad for killing most of classes except for Heavy. But since most Heavies use Tomislav, you can still reliably 1v1 them and win if you get the first shot on them anyway.

It's minigun that you shouldn't rev up and If there is like enemy near you then It's just good to not rev up and shoot and It will burn the enemy If They try to melee you. + It's also good as defense weapon how Otaku Gaming Servers with Zombie Escape gamemode taught me but sadly no one is talking about Zombie Escape in TF2 these days.

For the Hu-Long Heater, you'd usually want to play it when you have Pyros on your team. Doesn't matter if it's your flames or your Pyros' that light up the enemy team. As long as they are on fire, you'll get your bonus damage.

  • @nucleus691

Tomislav is just a straight upgrade anyway because TF2 runs on a version of the source engine that cant process the fire rate of every other minigun correctly. Every minigun except tomislav shoots slower than its supposed to, costing quite a bit of DPS.

    • @nucleus691
      @nucleus691 9 месяцев назад +1

@@giahuynguyenkim6389 As far as I know, the game is unable to process a fire rate of 10 rounds per second properly and instead makes it like 9.8 or something which is enough to make Tomislav sometimes beat the minigun point blank. If you are any further away than point blank, Tomislav is better assuming that both heavies have perfect aim

As a flank heavy connoisseur, i think you underestimated the value of stock minigun. Most pub players dont use their ears, so the noise inst really a downside, but the extra damage over Tomislav is quite useful in close quarters. Tomislav is a medium to long range gun, good in open areas. For close quarters, you want stock. I'll switch between the two depending on where im playing and which role im filling.
Brass beast is just a no go. With stock and Tomi, you still have enough movement to sidestep pills and rockets while spun up. Can't do that with brass beast.

Always been a heavy main, im just the kind of person that gravitates towards big powerful slow tank characters and playstyles. Something just hits different about walking out into the battlefield knowing you aint there for flashy kills or gimmicky frags...no no, you are there to whip out your big gun and shred the hell out of every sorry sap who comes your way, you are there to hear your gun fire repeatedly in glorious automatic fire, watch the shell casings fly and know you don't even have to worry about taking your finger off the trigger because you got more than enough ammo in the drum, box, mag or whatever your gun has to destroy every last person in the room!

Use the shotgun if you ever need to revv up at the open, it will give you mobility for taking cover from snipers and give you clear hearing for incoming spies. You'll still be reliant on Medics, but you have to be sure that they don't fall apart too far from the dispensers when you push. People just underestimate how a good fatscout with some accurate shotty fire can own the server. At the start of the round you may like Sandvich over any shotgun but when you failed to assault the entire team of pubs at their spawn, just go back to fatscout. You'll enjoy the Heavy more if you can position better for the combat.
"Consumes 4 additional ammo per second while spun up" simply translates to "Pack a shotgun instead of Sandvich for once, crying out loud". For Buffalo Steak, pair it with Holiday punch to stuff ubers or spies around your Sentry nest as they commit. Even though it's a good idea don't use Steak offensively with FoS as any Demoknight worth their salt would give you hell for even attempting it.
