Mercedes-Benz E Class "Comand Online" issues

  • One week after I collected my new E class coupe, including all the top tech extras, Comand Online, Premium Plus, twin 12.3" displays, built-in modem, internet, wifi, etc.
    The car is nice to drive and very comfortable. It looks lovely, and certainly has the wow factor when sitting inside the car. But sadly, the Comand Online "user experience" is so far a major let down.
    1. Because the car has a built in modem (they call it a Telematics Services Communication Module), the owner has to purchase a data tariff from Mercedes' partner, Vodafone, to make use of the "online" enabled extras (in car Mercedes-Benz Browser, Apps, Internet Radio, Weather, etc.). Vodafone charge £10 for 1GB of data per month, and it the service they provide is only 3G UMTS. I signed up for a free 1 month trial, and it is safe to say the service is unusable. It takes ages for anything to open, if it opens at all. The video above is proof of that.
    2. To add insult to injury, because the car has a modem built-in, the option to tether to your own phone and use the phone's internet connection has been removed. I have 40GB per month EE contract on my phone, with speeds up to 60Mbps but cannot use it.
    3. Many of the online features just hang, crash or just don't work. The browser works 1 in 10 times. The Internet Radio (when it decides to work) takes a good 30 seconds to connect - then intermittently buffers throughout.
    4. Comand Online is MirrorLink enabled, but has been disabled in my vehicle. Apparently, it can be re-enabled by going into Engineering Mode (secret menu), but no-one from Mercedes can help (so far at least).
    5. Mercedes-Benz Link is a menu option on Command Online, right under Mercedes-Benz Apps, but I cannot find anything to tell me what this is for or why it doesn't work. I contacted Mercedes-Benz HQ Customer Support and they didn't know what it was, they asked me to contact the dealer (which I had already done).
    This is my opinion, a lot of what is above I wish I knew before spending a significant amount of money on these extras. Personally, I do not believe they are worth it.

    Great info many thanks. Do you buy an unlimited data plan ?

      I have a 40GB a month plan with EE. I occasionally use it for Android Auto which has Spotify. But in the main, I use the DAB radio. Basically, I am not using the "in car entertainment" and the "Comand Online" to its full potential, because I am limited by the 3G telematics module. In other words, it looks nice - especially the 2 x 12" screens ... but I cannot do much with them with no internet.

    Good to hear you’re enjoying the car I had similar rubbish internet WiFi in my q7 but it’s 3 yrs old. I’d hoped it was now better. I’m getting an e53 amg coupe March 1st so checking out every single aspect. I love the internal design and external look of eclass, from sounds of it other than internet you’re impressed?

      The car is awesome, inside and out. It is only the connectivity that is poor. I bought the March 2018 model which had 3G. Three months later (June 2018) they updated the E Class model's telematics module to 4G. I wish I knew, as I would have waited. So the connectivity/stability issue above shouldn't be an issue on E Classes from June 2018 onwards. That said, you still need to pay for in-car internet, and there is still no way to use your mobile phone's internet. The workaround is to use Android Auto or the Apple equivalent (which it has) - but it is not that great.

      @Peter Van den Berg No cracks, but starting to crease on the bolster. But I see that on all drivers seats after a couple of years of wear.

      @@WelshWilts I have W213 April 2018 imported from Germany, but in internet status it shows 4G sometimes and 3G, does that mean I have the 4G module? The car is equipped with LTE module but the Mercedes me services are not available in my country, any other solution to connect to the internet? Some people recommend to try rSAP Bluetooth but I'm not sure, appreciate your thoughts.

      @@amohsen9848 Yes, that means you have a 4G/LTE telematics module installed. In UK, they added the 4G version in June 2018. The only way I know of is via Mercedes Me.

    did you try to move somewhere you got a better signal?

    • @WelshWilts
      @WelshWilts  5 лет назад

      Yes, I travel 80 miles per day. Location didn't make a difference. My trial "Internet in the Car" with Vodafone expired after a month. I didn't bother renewing it, as it was not fit for purpose. 8 months later, I no longer think about all the stuff that doesn't work.

    Mercedes me app. Is not available in my country, my MB W213 is equipped with LTE Communications module, is there anyway or any device to connect a normal SIM card signal to the car?

    • @WelshWilts

      Only by enabling "Engineering Mode", which can be enabled in some countries, but not the UK (without specialist equipment).

      Would you please explain how to connect to the internet after engineering mode?

      @@amohsen9848 I don't know because I cannot enable it. But search Google. Many people have done it. When you enable Engineering Mode, you can turn on "Tethering", which allows you to use your Phone's internet.

    Can tell me how is engineering mode?

    • @WelshWilts
      @WelshWilts  3 года назад

      I cannot say for the rest of the world. But in the UK, Engineering Mode is inaccessible by the customer. It can only be enabled using Xentry by the dealer.

      2017 E300 once my Mbrace service expired Navigation voice commands stopped. If I tried to enter a location addresses across the country 300 plus miles would pop up. Very dissatisfied with Mercedes.
